I Can't Do This Without You

This isn't requested, and it's another Kabbi thing that I found and thought would be so freaking cute. If y'all don't think so, GIT OUT OF HERE.

*ahem* Anyways. This one probably will be pretty short, but it's fine LOL.

Enjoy!

Kai sat up abruptly, nearly flinging himself off his air mattress. The whole thing skidded a few inches across the floor because of his momentum, nearly throwing him backward. When he regained his balance with a strangled gasp, he clamped his hand over his mouth to keep from being too loud. His own touch felt cold, and his fingers shook against his face.

Frantically, he slipped off the mattress and stood up shakily. He shuddered at the memory of his dream - where he'd used his magic to murder Chase, then watched the rest of his friends and family die right before his eyes - and looked anxiously toward the bunk bed for his friends.

Thankfully, Shintaro and Chase were both there. Shintaro was lying on his stomach, his arms folded under him and the blankets drawn up to his shoulders. Chase was sleeping on his side on the top bunk, his back turned to Kai - but he was definitely alive, definitely breathing.

Relief flooded through Kai, but as the door for it opened, a few other familiar feelings rushed in with it. Anger, disappointment, fear, and annoyance. He was angry with himself for hurting Chase with each touch, disappointed with himself for not doing anything, he was scared that someday Chase would lose the battle against Light and Dark, and Kai was annoyed that he wasn't enough to do something about it.

He wasn't enough.

What had he done to help anyone?

He was only making Chase's situation worse.

Stop it, Kai thought to himself, and he could almost hear Linda saying the same thing to him. Deep down, he knew he wasn't those things; and he had his friends to remind him of that.

Taking a long, shaky breath, Kai turned toward the door and walked out of the room. He shuffled quietly down the hallway, taking long breaths to calm himself down and pushing the image of his dream away from his mind.

He needed someone to be with right now.

When Kai arrived by the couch, he carefully stepped over Linda and settled shakily onto the arm of the couch. Abby was sleeping on her side, her left arm under her head to serve as a makeshift pillow and her other arm folded beside her. Her sides rose and fell evenly, and she looked peaceful.

Kai almost felt bad that he was going to wake her from her peaceful sleep, but he wanted to be with her. At least for a little bit. Taking a deep breath, he touched her shoulder and got no response. He knew that she would be difficult to wake up, but he had to try.

He shook her shoulder gently, careful not to hurt her in any way. After a few tries, he was beginning to get frantic; yet he remained quiet so Linda wouldn't wake up as well. He didn't really know how light of a sleeper she was, because she was almost always awake before he came out of his room in the mornings.

"Abby," he finally whispered, leaning forward and shaking her with both hands. "Abby, wake up. Please wake up? Abby..." He shook her again, and she made a little grunting sound but didn't open her eyes.

When she finally did open her eyes, Kai found himself shaking again. He watched solemnly as she closed her eyes again with a grunt of slight annoyance, but he wouldn't let her fall back asleep.

"Abby," he said softly, his voice trembling. "You need to wake up because I can't do this without you." He wrapped his arms around his middle self-consciously, just wanting Abby to wake up, to hug him, to be there.

Abby slowly sat up, folding her legs under her neatly and pulling her blankets around her shoulders. She looked up and found Kai, her blue eyes locking with his. She tipped her head to the side slightly and opened her arms. "Come here," she said softly, beckoning him forward with her hands.

Kai slid off the arm of the couch and folded into her arms, burying his face into her shoulder.

Abby rubbed his back reassuringly, resting her head on his shoulder as well. She whispered gently into his ear, "It's okay, Kai. You're okay."

And Kai knew that he was.
