His Voice
Abby woke to the sound of bouncy music, and through her sleepy haze, she opened her eyes and rolled onto her side, her mind barely registering the song. She blinked and rolled again onto her back, lifting her right hand to rub her eyes. She yawned and stretched, rolling her shoulders back against the arm of the couch. She couldn't make out what the song was, but she could hear its jumpy beat coming from the hallway.
Slowly, Abby sat up and smoothed her hair away from her face, gazing around her sleepily. Linda was sitting against the front of the couch, her hair tied up in a messy bun and a book on her lap. She didn't look up at Abby as the teenager yawned again. Linda's foot was tapping to the music, but if she knew the words, she remained silent.
"What's going on?" Abby asked groggily, cracking her knuckles to wake her body up. She straightened her bangs and lifted the thick, brown blanket away from her body, swinging her legs over the edge of the couch.
"Chase decided to turn on some music while he cleaned the room," Linda replied bluntly, keeping her eyes on the words she was reading.
"Oh," Abby said with a small smile. Of course he'd decided to turn on music. Ever since he was little, he'd enjoyed bouncy music, the kind that he could jump around and sway his hips to. Abby had only ever seen him really dance once, but she knew he was good at it.
"He's really weird sometimes," Falte's voice said from the kitchen, accompanied by an agreeing scoff-chuckle that sounded like Shintaro.
"Yep," Abby concurred, rising slowly and stretching her arms behind her with a small grunt. She gazed around her in confusion, realizing that Kai wasn't in the living room, where he normally was when he was waiting for Abby to wake up.
"He's actually in the room with Chase," Linda replied to her thought before Abby could even think it. "Don't know what he's doing, since he doesn't dance. Or sing. Or do anything fun." She chuckled at her own joke, yet keeping her eyes on her book.
"He can do fun things," Abby said argumentatively, putting her hands on her hips. She frowned down at Linda, then looked away and made her way to the bathroom to brush her hair.
As she made her way into the hallway, she was finally able to make out the song that was playing currently. It was called Uptown Funk by Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars, and it was a fun, bouncy song that Chase loved.
Smiling, Abby heard her brother's voice singing along with the words. Chase wasn't an absolutely wonderful singer, but he wasn't a bad one either. He mostly sang weirdly to be silly.
Stepping into the bathroom and running a hairbrush through her thick hair, Abby wondered what in the world Kai was doing in that room. Could he have been singing along, or even dancing? Or just cleaning?
Abby's mind stuck on the image of her boyfriend dancing, and she watched her cheeks turn cherry red in the mirror. She couldn't stop the curiosity the crept into her heart, and she bit her lip.
She wanted to see if he was dancing.
Carefully, Abby stalked over to the closed boys' room door and put her ear against it. Uptown Funk had just ended, but she could hear Chase's voice still humming the chorus as a new song started.
Abby knew this song, too.
The song itself was dedicated for a friend who had died, and it was a very pretty song that made Abby sad every time she heard it. She loved the song, especially the chorus that Charlie Puth sang, but it made tears come into her eyes each time.
It was See You Again by Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth.
As the song started play, Charlie Puth's voice was drowned out by two male voices, both singing the same part magically. But one of them stopped abruptly, and the other voice continued singing as though nothing had happened.
It wasn't Chase.
Abby turned the doorknob and peeped her head in, gasping as she listened to the angelic voice that was singing the chorus.
Chase was standing by the bed, two books in his hands. His yellow eyes were wide and shocked and awed, and his mouth was hanging open in wonder. He was staring at Kai, who had his back to them and was dusting off one of the shelves, swaying to the song.
The angelic, wonderful, amazing voice belonged to him. He matched each note perfectly, even transition between notes that he made up and sounded even better than Charlie Puth's notes. His voice shot up and down smoothly with the chords, then held out with the words that Charlie sang.
Abby felt her jaw go slack as well, and she stepped completely into the room to watch her boyfriend as he cleaned, swayed, and sang. He wasn't aware that his friend and girlfriend were staring at him in awe as his award-winning voice, but as soon as the part ended, he paused tensely.
The song continued, but Kai turned around with a confused face, which then turned into shock and embarrassment when he saw Abby and Chase staring at him with open mouths. Abby's face was hot, which meant she was blushing like crazy. Chase was just staring at his friend with an awed look.
"W-What?" Kai said sheepishly, looking from Chase to Abby and back again, getting flustered as they stared. "What??"
"'What?'?!" Chase exploded, his mouth curving into a wide grin. "You sing like a freaking boss and all you can say is 'what'??" He dropped the books on the bed and shook his head in wonder. "Seriously, dude, I had no idea you could even sing."
Kai's face turned red, and he clenched his hands together nervously, glancing away from Chase in embarrassment. "Well... I..."
"Sing it again," Abby breathed, noticing that the chorus was about to play again.
Kai looked at her with red cheeks, immediately shaking his head. "No, I don't-"
Abby hurried forward and took his hands, looking up into his brown eyes. "Please? I want to hear it again. Just the way you did it before. Please?"
Kai blinked at her as the chorus started, but, sighing, opened his mouth and sang the part again. His voice lifted over her head, swirling around the room and making Abby smile in awe. His voice sailed out of the open door and rendered the whole house silent, listening intently to his angelic voice. As he sang, he closed his eyes, though Abby wasn't sure why. Was it to block out the stares, or was it because he just did that when he sang?
With each word, he seemed to gain more confidence. He opened his eyes again and tugged Abby closer, wrapping her in his arms and lifting his head, closing his eyes almost peacefully. Abby felt chills travel down her spine and tears fill her eyes, but she held them back and buried her face in Kai's chest.
The chorus drowned out into the "oh"s, and Kai transitioned into those perfectly, his voice seeming to trail cold fingers down Abby's back again. She was in absolute awe until he cut off, tensing up again.
The chorus was finished, but Abby pulled back anyway, unsure of why he'd tensed so quickly. She looked up into his handsome brown eyes and smiled, shaking her head. "You're so amazing, Kai. I can't believe you didn't tell me that you can sing."
He smiled shyly, but his brown eyes traveled over her head and widened as he looked at something behind them.
Abby turned around and found Shintaro, Linda, Chase, and Falte all standing in the doorway.
Shintaro was staring at Kai with a look of shock, disbelief, and wonder. Linda's eyes were as wide as saucers as she comprehended that the voice had really come from Kai. Falte's eyes were full of tears, but he was smiling widely at his son.
Abby turned back, stood on her tiptoes, and pecked Kai on the lips.
