Chapter 24: (Aaira's pov)
I woke with a splitting headache. As I dragged myself out of bed, every step felt heavy, laden with the weight of exhaustion and pain. The moonligt filtered through the curtains, casting a soft glow that did nothing to ease the tension in my body.
Walking slowly, I made my way towards the dining room where I found my parents sitting at the table. Jungkook sat beside them, but I could sense the tension in his posture. Hwasa noona, his sister, and my mother-in-law and father-in-law were also present. His siblings were there too. Their eyes turned towards me as I entered, their gazes questioning and expectant.
Hwasa: Look who's here ?
I quickly bowed at all of them.
Hwasa: I've been wanting to ask a question from you for a while now, Aaira ?
Jungkook: Go on Noona, What is it ?
Hwasa:What's up with you always sleeping and fainting?
I remained silent, not having the energy or appetite to respond. My mother-in-law and father-in-law looked at me with concern, but also with a hint of disapproval.
Father: Aaira, dear, are you feeling unwell again?
My father asked, I nodded faintly, avoiding eye contact as I took my seat. The table was set with various dishes, but my mind was elsewhere, numb to the surroundings.
Hwasa: She's always like this, acting as if the world revolves around her dramas.
Her taunt stung, but I bit my lip, refusing to give her the satisfaction of a reaction. Jungkook glanced at me, but I still keep looking down.
Jungkook: Aaira, are you okay? You barely ate anything this morning.
His voice was gentle. I managed a weak smile, though it felt more like a grimace. I just nodded my head.
Aaira: I'm just not very hungry, My Lord.
My mother interjected.
Mother: It's not good for you to skip meals, Aaira. You need to take care of yourself better.
I nodded silently, why would she even care for me after criticising me in the room. My mind was still foggy, consumed by the memories and emotions that refused to settle.
Hwasa: Maybe if you stopped daydreaming all the time, you'd actually be useful around here.
Her words were like barbs, digging into my already fragile state. I clenched my fists under the table, fighting to keep my composure.
Seokjin: Excuse me, but I don't recall her asking for your opinion, Hwasa.
His response was sharper than I intended, it was surprising even myself. Hwasa scoffed, a smirk playing on her lips.
Hwasa: Touchy, aren't we? I'm just saying what everyone else is thinking.
I bit back a retort, unwilling to escalate the tension further. Instead, I focused on pushing the food around my plate, my appetite completely gone.
Suah: Aaira, dear, maybe you should see a doctor. This fainting spells of yours are becoming quite concerning.
I nodded quietly, not trusting myself to speak. Jungkook reached out, placing a hand on my shoulder.
Jungkook's Mother: What's up lately ?
Jungkook: Mom, let's not press her right now. Aaira needs some time.
His mother sighed, exchanging a glance with his father, who remained silent throughout the exchange. As dinner continued, I withdrew into myself, the conversations around me becoming distant echoes. Hwasa Noona's occasional remarks continued to sting, but I focused on breathing deeply, trying to calm myself within.
Hwasa: Typical Aaira, always causing a scene.
Her comment was met with a disapproving glance from Jungkook, but I remained silent, my gaze fixed on my untouched food. As I played with it.
Namjoon: Hwasa, enough. Aaira is a daughter-in-law in our house not a peasant, show some respect.
I knew it wouldn't deter Hwasa Noona for long. The tension at the table was palpable, everyone aware of the underlying strain. I was trying my best to not stand out of the room.
Mother-in-law: Aaira, dear, have you been taking your medication?
Her question caught me off guard. I hesitated before nodding faintly.
Aaira: Yes, I have.
My response was clipped, my guard up against any further probing. Jungkook shot me a concerned look.
Jungkook: Maybe we should wrap up dinner. Aaira looks tired.
His suggestion was met with murmurs of agreement. As we cleared the dishes and prepared to leave the dining room, Hwasa couldn't resist one last jab.
Hwasa: Don't worry, Aaira. I'm sure Jungkook will take care of everything since you seem incapable.
Jungkook stiffened beside me, but before he could respond, I spoke up, my voice trembling with suppressed anger.
Aaira: You know nothing about what I'm going through, Noona. So maybe you should keep your opinions to yourself.
As I said, i quickly walked out of the dining room, leaving Jungkook still sitting at the table. The tension in the air was palpable, but I couldn't stay any longer. My feet felt like lead as I made my way towards my chamber, the weight of the evening pressing down on me.
Once inside, I closed the door behind me and leaned against it, taking a deep breath. I walked over to my desk and pulled out my diary, Sitting in front of the mirror, I opened the diary and began to write.
The ink flowed smoothly across the paper, I wrote everything that I had been holding back. I wrote about the days I had disappeared, detailing every painful memory and experience. The process was cathartic, the act of writing grounding me in a way nothing else could, I loved writing my pain onto the pages.
As I continued to write, my eyes flickered to my reflection in the mirror. The sight of my face brought a rush of hatred I have been feeling towards me. But I forced myself to focus on the diary, The words on the page became my escape, I could finally put my feelings on the pages without lying to anyone.
I wrote about the old scientist couple and their brutal experiments on me, the fear that had gripped me during those dark days. The memories were still vivid in the corner of my soul, each memory was a sharp stab of pain straight into my heart, but I didn't shy away. I needed to get it all out.
The ink smudged slightly as my hand trembled onto the pages beneath, but I pressed on, i was determined to capture every detail. The diary was my home, a place where I could be honest with myself, where I could confront the demons that haunted me every night.
Hours passed, and the room grew darker as the night wore on, I was still sitting here screeching the feather against the paper. The only light that came inside was from the moon filtering through the curtains, casting a soft glow on the pages of my diary. I barely noticed, lost in the act of writing.
Eventually, I paused, my hand cramping from the efforts now. I glanced at my reflection again, and this time, the hatred was still there, but it was tempered by little peace. I wasn't going to let it consume me.
With a deep breath, I closed the diary and set it aside. I wasn't sure what the future held, but I knew I couldn't face it. Rising from my chair, I walked over to the window and looked out at the night sky which was at a distance.
As I sat on the edge of the bed in my chamber, the occasional rustling of leaves were the only sound outside the window. The moonlight casts shadows across the floor, painting the room in a soft, ethereal glow.
As time passed, the door creaked open, and Jungkook entered quietly. He walked towards the closet and returned with a first aid kit. Sitting beside me on the bed, he gently took my hand in his, he gently caress my hand.
Jungkook: Are you alright?
I managed a small nod, unable to meet his gaze. He opened the first aid kit and began to tend to the small wound on my hand, he was taking care of the scars that had occurred on my skin.
Jungkook: You startled everyone, Aaira. What happened?
His tone was gentle, I sighed softly.
Aaira: I... I couldn't handle Noona's remarks. I just... I couldn't stay there.
My voice trembled slightly, betraying the emotions I had been struggling to contain. Jungkook listened attentively, his touch soothing as he carefully cleaned and bandaged my wound.
Jungkook: She shouldn't have said those things to you. I'm sorry you had to endure that.
I managed a weak smile, though it held little warmth.
Aaira: It's not your fault, Jungkook. I just... I feel so out of place sometimes.
Jungkook's eyes softened, his thumb brushing gently over the bandage on my hand.
Jungkook: Do you want to lighten your mood?
I met his gaze with squinted eyes, a faint smile tugging at the corners of my lips. He always knew how to read me, how to offer solace in moments of uncertainty, he always knew what I wanted.
Aaira: What do you have in mind?
Jungkook's smile widened, as he leaned in closer.
Jungkook: How about a horse ride? You love being out in the open, and it might help you clear your mind.
I nodded eagerly, taking his offered hand without hesitation.
Aaira: I would love that.
We made our way towards the horse stables located on the estate grounds. The evening air was crisp, carrying the faint scent of hay and earth, i would love to walk with him beneath the night sky. As we approached the stables, the sight of the horses grazing under the twilight sky, was so mesmerizing.
The stable was a rustic wooden structure, weathered by time. Lanterns hung from beams, casting a warm glow that illuminated the rows of stalls, it was so nostalgic, I don't know when was the last time I've been here. The sound of horses neighing softly and the rhythmic thud of hooves against straw-lined floors, were the only sounds in this place.
Jungkook led me to a spacious stall where two magnificent horses were hooked by the ropes. The first was a dappled grey mare, her coat was shimmering in the soft moonlight. She was so tall, her eyes were curious yet gentle. Her mane flowed like silk, catching the light.
Jungkook: This is Luna.
He gestured towards the grey mare.
Jungkook: She's spirited but gentle, perfect for a ride under the moonlight.
I reached out to stroke Luna's velvety muzzle, feeling a connection with her calm presence. She nuzzled my hand lightly, as if sensing my need for comfort.
Aaira: She's beautiful.
Jungkook smiled, his eyes reflecting the soft glow of the lanterns.
Jungkook: And this one...
He moved to the next stall, revealing a chestnut gelding with a glossy coat that gleamed like polished mahogany in the dim light. The gelding stamped his hoof lightly.
Jungkook: This is Blaze. He's steady and dependable, a perfect companion for our ride.
Blaze eyed us, his eyes showed curiosity and readiness, his ears twitching attentively as if waiting for our command. I was captivated by his presence, admiring the sleek lines of his muscular frame and the way he exuded confidence towards me.
Aaira: They're both amazing. Which one will you ride?
Jungkook chuckled softly, there was a hint of mischief in his eyes.
Jungkook: I'll leave that choice to you, Aaira.
I considered both horses, torn between Luna's graceful elegance and Blaze's steadfast figure. In the end, I turned to Jungkook with a smile.
Aaira: I think I'll ride Blaze tonight.
Jungkook nodded approvingly, leading Blaze out of the stall and securing a bridle with practice ease. He helped me mount Blaze, ensuring I was comfortable in the saddle before mounting Luna himself.
Jungkook: Ready?
I nodded, we guided our horses out of the stable and into the cool night air, together. The estate grounds stretched before us, bathed in the silvery glow of the moon. As we rode side by side, the sound of hooves and the gentle sway of the horses beneath us was so calming.
The worries of the evening faded into the background, Jungkook glanced at me, a smile playing on his lips.
Jungkook: Feeling better?
As I nodded, Jungkook and I guided our horses out of the stable and into the cool night air, together. The estate grounds stretched out before us, glowing under the moonlight. As we rode side by side, the rhythmic sound of hooves and the gentle sway of the horses beneath us brought a calming peace.
I nodded again, a small smile spreading across my lips. His presence beside me was comforting, Suddenly, Jungkook shouted excitedly.
Jungkook: Race!
With a whoop, he spurred his horse into a gallop, racing ahead towards the city. Feeling a surge of exhilaration, I urged Blaze forward, following closely behind him. The wind whipped against my face, mingling with the scent of earth and distant fires from the city.
As we approached the outskirts of the city, the landscape began to change. Tall buildings made of stone and wood loomed in the moonlight beside of us, their windows glowing warmly against the night sky. Streets were busy with different activities, filled with people dressed in 1800s attire-long coats, bonnets, and bustling skirts.
Jungkook and I were both cloaked, blending into the shadows cast by the buildings. I could feel the eyes of the city's inhabitants upon us. If they had known who we were, they would have bowed in respect, Jungkook's status and our place in this world was too high to be blended with these people.
The city market stalls lined the cobblestone streets, their vendors hawking everything from fresh produce to handmade goods. Carriages rattled by, pulled by sleek horses adorned with plumed harnesses. Lanterns hung from posts, casting pools of golden light that danced with the shadows.
Jungkook led us deeper into the heart of the city, I followed his lead, marveling at the energy and vibrancy that filled every corner of the city. We rode past a grand fountain adorned with intricate sculptures, children chasing each other around its base.
The fountain's waters shimmered under the moon's gaze, even though my reflection was visible under the pale moonlight, in the water. Jungkook slowed his horse to a trot, allowing me to catch up beside him. His eyes sparkled as he glanced at me.
Jungkook: Enjoying the ride?
I nodded, This spontaneous escape had lifted my spirits more than I could have imagined.
Aaira: This is incredible, Jungkook. Thank you for bringing me here.
He smiled warmly, his gaze softening.
Jungkook: Anytime, Aaira. It's good to see you smile.
Jungkook dismounted gracefully from his horse in front of a quaint barbecue shop, he turned to assist me with getting down. As I swung my leg over Blaze's back, I stumbled slightly upon landing, causing Jungkook to chuckle softly.
Jungkook: Easy there, Aaira. Let me help you.
He helped me down, a smile tugged at my lips as he gently guided me towards the entrance of the shop.
Jungkook: How about some barbecue? I know it's one of your favorites.
I nodded gratefully, touched by his thoughtfulness. It was moments like these that reminded me of how deeply he cared for me. He knew if he would ask me to eat, i would eventually say no somehow, but if he would ask me for a date, I would never refuse. Inside the shop, Jungkook approached the shopkeeper, exchanging a few quiet words that made the shopkeeper glance at us with surprise.
The shopkeeper's eyes widened as he recognised us, but Jungkook gestured for him to remain discreet. With a nod, the shopkeeper hurried to set up a small table for us, arranging a grill and bringing out an assortment of marinated meats and vegetables.
The shop was cozy, with wooden tables and chairs arranged under a canopy that shielded us from the cool night air. Lanterns hanging overhead cast a warm glow over the scene, creating a welcoming atmosphere.
As we settled into our seats, Jungkook took charge of the grill, expertly placing the skewers of meat over the glowing coals. The sizzle and aroma of barbecue filled the air, blending with the lively chatter of other patrons nearby.
Jungkook glanced at me with a smile, his eyes softening with affection, as he took my hand in his, planting a kiss at the back of it.
Jungkook: How are you feeling now, Aaira?
I sighed,
Aaira: Much better, Thank you for this. It's exactly what I needed, My Lord.
He nodded, flipping the skewers with practice ease. As the meat cooked to perfection, he glanced around discreetly, ensuring our privacy was respected. The shopkeeper, now composed, served us with a polite smile, maintaining a respectful distance.
The first bite of tender, smoky barbecue was heavenly, warming me from the inside out. Jungkook watched me with a fond expression, his own plate untouched as he focused on ensuring I was taken care of.
Jungkook: Eat up, My love.
I nodded, the food tasted even better knowing that Jungkook had orchestrated this impromptu escape for my sake, we enjoyed our meal together. People passed by, unaware of the little prince sitting in there crowd.
Eventually, as we finished our meal and paid our respects to the shopkeeper, Jungkook gave him a bag full of gold coins. As he helped me back onto Blaze. With a final nod of gratitude, we left the barbecue shop behind.
Jungkook guided our horses through the busy streets once more, heading back towards the estate under the moonlit veil of night. We neared the estate grounds, I turned to Jungkook with a smile, he was already staring back at me.
Aaira: Thank you, My lord. For everything.
He returned my smile, his eyes holding a warmth that no one else could ever match.
Jungkook: Anytime, Aaira. I'm here for you.
As Jungkook helped me down from Blaze. We led both horses back to the stable, where we carefully tended to them, ensuring they were comfortable and well-fed after our evening ride.
Once the horses were settled, Jungkook walked beside me back towards the estate grounds. We reached the entrance of the estate. Jungkook's arm slipped around my shoulders naturally, drawing me closer to his side as we walked towards our chambers.
Inside our shared chambers, we both settled onto the bed without hesitation after changing our clothes, Jungkook was once again shirtless. He held me close, I nestled against him. As sleep began to claim us both, I whispered softly into his ears, before planting a kiss on his forehead.
Aaira: Thank you, for being here.
His response was a gentle murmur against my hair.
Jungkook: Always, My baby. Always.
I Wrapped myself in his arms, as we drifted into dreams. And so, beneath the watchful gaze of the moon and stars, we slept-two souls intertwined, forever, together, with each other. Him and I.
