(2) The Punishment
"You two are the children of the most powerful businessmen!" Mr. Dreyar scolded as he paced around in his office. "You should be role models for your fellow students, not starting fights."
"Actually," Lucy said, raising her hand, "I volunteer after school to help kids who have trouble with math and reading in the lower grades."
Natsu rolled his eyes, leaning back in his seat. "Whoop de freaking do," he muttered. "Someone give this person an award."
Lucy scoffed. "Oh, like you have anything to brag about?" she replied smugly. "What do you do for fun, see what's flammable and what isn't?"
"It was one time!" Natsu was getting annoyed at how Lucy kept bringing it up. "And it was your fault!" Technically speaking, it was both their faults, but no one needed to know that. "I still don't get why I was the only one who got into trouble."
"Because you're the only one who deserved to get into trouble."
"You shouldn't lie in front of the head like that."
"Oh, but I'm not lying."
"Both of you, shut up!"
The two of them turned to face the old man, who looked very tired, yet annoyed at the same time.
"Now, what do you believe is a rightful punishment for both of you?" he asked, putting his elbows on the table in front of him.
Natsu leaned forward, putting on a sarcastic smile. "My face is soaking wet, and you didn't give us a towel or anything. I'd say that's punishment enough."
Lucy turned around angrily to face him. "At least your water is clean! I have your dirty saliva all over the back of my head."
"Oh, please. I bet you're secretly fantasizing about it."
"Why you --"
"NOW, WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE IS A RIGHTFUL PUNISHMENT FOR BOTH OF YOU?" Mr. Dreyar asked again loudly, stopping Natsu and Lucy.
"You could make us volunteer for something after school," Lucy finally suggested.
"You already do that," Natsu spat, "so it wouldn't be considered a punishment for you."
"Oh, so you think volunteering for something is a punishment?" Lucy said with innocent eyes.
"So you don't think volunteering for something is a punishment?" Natsu shot back.
"I don't," Lucy said haughtily. "Volunteering shows how much you --"
"So why would you suggest volunteering as punishment?" Natsu interrupted.
Lucy stopped, frowning. Natsu smirked, shaking his head at her stupidity, but Mr. Dreyar spoke again.
"No, I like her idea," Mr. Dreyar turned to Lucy. "Miss Heartfilia, when do you do your tutoring?"
"Tuesdays and Thursdays," she said proudly, sitting straighter and smiling.
Natsu scoffed to himself. Suck-up, he thought, although he also thought about how he would also have to up his game. His father had told him that he would have to go to a college better than Heartfilia's, which meant he would also have to do volunteer work.
"Mister Dragneel, do you have anything on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays?" Mr. Dreyar asked Natsu, snapping him out of his thoughts.
"Huh? Um, no."
"Huh? Um, no," Natsu heard Lucy mimic under her breath. He silently cursed her out, but still glared at the girl, who just smiled innocently at him. Rolling his eyes, he turned back to face Mr. Dreyar.
"Good. Then, the both of you will be serving detention on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays for as long as I see fit."
"Wait, what?" Natsu leaped to his feet at the same time as Lucy. "What do you mean, detention?" they asked in unison.
"Detention," Mr. Dreyar said plainly. "It's when students are forced to stay after school for two hours doing absolutely nothing except sitting, breathing, and staring at the wall in front of them." He stopped to nod at Lucy. "I must thank you for the idea, Miss Heartfilia," he said. "We rarely have reason to give detention, the idea almost slipped my mind."
"But, that's not what I meant!" Lucy protested. "I meant joining a club, or something."
"Well, I suppose you could see this as a Detention Club, if you wish," Mr. Dreyar said. "Although, it is only you two, for now, so it may be a but difficult. . . ."
"Wait, one of her friends tried to strip one of my friends," Natsu blurted out, pointing a finger at Lucy. "And I saw the same girl pouring water into random people's lockers."
"Okay, first of all, I stopped Juvia before she could touch him. And besides," Lucy snapped, turning to face Mr. Dreyar, "Gray Fullbuster had stripped on his own. Don't you remember the shirtless guy you passed when you dragged us away? That's definitely going against the dress code. That's G-R-A-Y F-U-L--"
"Oh, please," Natsu interrupted. "What about Levy McGarden? Gajeel was telling me about how she was, uh, copying homework answers for another class," Natsu lied. However, from the look on Lucy's face, he had been correct.
"That was just one time!" Lucy shrieked. "And speaking of Gajeel, I've seen him on his phone during class multiple times. He's always texting somebody, or on social media, or just taking pictures of the teachers and putting filters on them look weird."
"Then, she assaulted Gajeel!" Natsu yelled, waving his finger around. "Yeah, she was only pretending to help Juvia up but made herself land on Gajeel on purpose. And don't get me started on --"
"Alright, that's enough," Mr. Dreyar said from behind his computer, which he had turned on at some point. "The students you're talking about are Juvia Lockser, Gray Fullbuster, Levy McGarden, and Gajeel Redfox?"
"Um, yeah," Natsu mumbled, slightly surprised. He had forgotten that he was in the head's room, for a moment.
"Then, please inform that they will also be receiving detention under the same circumstances. If they don't believe you, please hand them these slips." Mr. Dreyar pushed six pink slips towards Natsu and Lucy.
Natsu picked up the ones with his, Gray's, and Gajeel's names on them. Lucy picked up the remaining slips from next to him.
"The guys are probably going to ditch, anyways, so I suppose it doesn't matter," Natsu said, shoving the slips into his pocket.
"Which is why I won't write that you got detention on your permanent records, if you show up for every single detention. I also won't call your houses, leaving you to come up with your own excuses."
Lucy raised an eyebrow. "Seriously?" she asked, fingering the paper with her name on it.
"Well, you are first-time offenders," Mr. Dreyar said. "And I believe in second chances."
"Actually, I wouldn't call it a second chance," Natsu butted in. "I mean, we still have to go to detention, right?"
"Well, if you would like me to put your detention down on your records, I am perfectly fine with it."
Natsu coughed awkwardly, looking away.
"As today is Tuesday, detention will start tomorrow," Mr. Dreyar continued. "Good day to you both." He pointed his finger at the door, and Natsu and Lucy walked out of the room.
"So, detention, huh?" Mirajane said as the two passed her.
"How did you know?" Lucy asked, surprised.
Mirajane giggled. "I wouldn't be surprised if this entire hall heard you both, the way you two screamed at each other." She then shook her head. "I don't think it'll be so bad, though," she said. "You'll have your friends with you."
"Oh yeah, Gray and Gajeel will be out of their minds with joy when they find out Heartfilia here got them detention," Natsu muttered.
Lucy scoffed, turning around to face Natsu. "Like you did nothing wrong? Because you started this mess."
"Oh look, it's my fault again," Natsu said sarcastically, raising his hands up. "It's always my fault." He shook his head, walking out of the office before he and Heartfilia got into another screaming match. He would never admit it out loud, but his throat was starting to hurt a little.
Sighing, he decided to go to his next class.
* * * * * * * * * *
"You got us into WHAT?" Gajeel snatched the pink paper from Natsu's hand, holding it closer to his face. "'Usage of phone in class'? How the hell did he know?"
"'Stripping in public,'" Gray read off of his. "It was one time, and I get detention for who knows how long?"
Natsu, Gray, and Gajeel were meeting in the hallway with no CCTV cameras, so Natsu could give the two of them their detention slips. They didn't have the same classes after Lunch on Tuesdays, and Natsu didn't want to wait, so he had texted them. So far, it wasn't going so well.
"Hey, at least I got Heartfilia's friends in detention, too," Natsu defended when Gray and Gajeel glared at him angrily.
"So?" Gray said, making a face. "That doesn't concern me and my social life that I'll be missing out on."
"Whatever," Gajeel scoffed, letting the slip fall to the ground. "I'm ditching. Head could write me a hundred slips, I don't care."
"Yeah, the old man thought you might say that. He said if you do, he'll tell our parents and put it on our permanent records."
"Wait, so if we show up, he won't do that stuff?" Gray asked.
Natsu nodded. "Yeah."
"And it's on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays? So, it starts tomorrow?"
"God, were you always this dumb?" Natsu groaned. "Yes."
Gray scoffed. "Someone like you, is calling me dumb?"
"Yeah, I am." Natsu slammed his head against Gray's. "I'm warmed up from Heartfilia. You wanna go?" Gray was the second person, besides Lucy, whom he fought with the most.
"Hell yeah."
"Oh, you're going to fight without me, is that it? Well, I suppose I'll just fight the winner, then," Gajeel said from the side, getting comfortable. Gajeel was the third person.
Before the two guys could do anything, however, a fourth member threw the two of them away from each other. "I heard you guys just got a detention," he said. "You're going to fight?"
"What the hell was that for, Jellal?" Natsu yelled, jumping back up. "You're always cutting, and when you actually come, you try to save Gray?"
"Save me? You should be grateful he decided to show up and save you. I'm not afraid of what your dad's going to do to me after I beat you to a pulp," Gray spat.
"Hey, wait, hold up,"Gajeel interrupted, walking between them. "I get detention for using my phone, but Fernandez here doesn't get anything for showing up for only half the semester?"
Natsu paused when he realized something. "Huh, come to think of it, the red-haired girl didn't get detention, either," he thought out loud.
Jellal smiled. "Erza's too smart to get into detention. She'd find a way to back out of it easily."
"Oh, what is this?" Natsu placed an arm on Jellal's shoulder. "Is this why you started showing up more often? To catch a glimpse of your girlfriend?"
Jellal shrugged Natsu away. "We just used to be childhood friends. And I'll have you know that my absences have nothing to do with anybody from this school."
"Yeah, Jellal. We all know how much you love Fairy Tail Prep," Gajeel said sarcastically, still annoyed that he received detention when Jellal didn't. "Where do you even go, anyways?"
"Speaking of, I only came to speak with one of the teachers. I'll be leaving now. Don't wait!" Jellal opened the window as wide as it could get and slipped through the opening.
Gajeel clicked his tongue. "Man, I hope he gets caught and gets detention, too."
"Besides that," Gray said, pulling Natsu away. "Where were we?"
Natsu smirked. "I was beating your ass, if I remember correctly."
"Oh really? 'Cause I remember getting ready to pound your face in."
Before either of them could do anything, however, they were interrupted for the second time.
"Hey, what are you three doing? Shouldn't you be in class right n-- Stop right there!" A man who looked like Mr. Clive, the Gym teacher, began chasing after the three friends.
"This isn't over!" Natsu yelled to Gray and Gajeel as the three of them split into different directions.
A/N:
So, Jellal is the fourth friend of Natsu's, who always ditches. I wonder why~
