(12) Exchanging Dreams

Natsu was secretly relieved that Ms. Vermillion forced them to talk about the dreams. He also felt weird when he had the dreams, like Heartfilia had said. He was watching the scene play out, but he was also acting in it, as well.

"In the first one, it was the middle of the night. Heartfilia and I were sitting in a place with a lot of rainbow-colored trees."

"'In the first one,' meaning there's more than one?"

"You and Heartfilia alone? At night?"

"Both of you, shut up!" Lucy yelled at Gray and Gajeel, who had been the ones to interrupt Natsu. "Let him finish."

"I think we were doing a picnic, or something, because there was a blanket and a basket and a lot of food piled around."

"A picnic?" Erza said. "Oh, I've always wanted to go on a picnic. And at night, too."

Natsu thought Lucy would yell at Erza to shut up, but it seemed she was too scared of her to say anything, so he decided to continue.

"And I had told Heartfilia about how I was --" Natsu stopped, but this time, it wasn't because of anybody else. How was he supposed to tell everybody in the room that he had told his enemy that he was glad that they went to the same school?

"So, are you planning on finishing your sentence?" Jellal asked impatiently. "You told her about how you were what?"

"Um, ItoldHeartfiliathatIwasgladshealsowenttoFairyTail," Natsu blurted out in one breath.

"What?" Six faces stared at him in confusion, but one seemed to have understood what he had said, and she was eagerly jotting everything down in her notebook.

"You know it doesn't actually reflect my thoughts, right?" Natsu said, in case Lucy got any weird ideas. "I'm definitely not glad right now."

"But these people represent us," Lucy said with a smirk on her face. "You should just give up, now. You're not my type."

"Oh yeah?" Natsu struggled to come up with something, and then he finally remembered something else. "Oh, and one more thing. After I said that, you giggled and said, 'Me too, Natsu.' Write that part down, too. You're the one who said not to leave anything out."

At this, the smirk dropped off of Lucy's face, but she still wrote everything down.

"Thank you for sharing, Natsu," Ms. Vermillion said to him. "Does anybody have any thoughts about it?"

"I have a question," Lucy said, raising her hand into the air. "Can you describe the trees as specifically as possible? Did the setting seem to be somewhere you recognized from here in Fiore? Were there any noticeable differences between us and the us in your dream? Did you notice anything similar about this dream and the others?"

"It was night, but the leaves from the rainbow tree glowed," Natsu said, frowning. "And it wasn't a tiny tree, either. It had a thick trunk and its leaves were huge and round and hung down. And unless you've seen any rainbow-colored trees around, I'd have to say no to the second question," Natsu said sarcastically, earning him a look from Lucy. "I can't remember in this dream, but in another one, you had a pink Fairy Tail mark on the back of your right hand. Gray had a dark one on his right chest --"

"Wait, I came out in the dream, too?"

"Not this one, a different one. We were fighting in that one, and --"

"Hold on!" Lucy yelped. "Start from the beginning."

Natsu sighed. "I saw me and Gray fighting. He wasn't wearing a shirt, and he had on a silver cross necklace and a black Fairy Tail mark on his right chest. For some reason, his hands were surrounded by ice and mine were surrounded by fire. And I was totally kicking his ass."

"Oh yeah?" Gray challenged, jumping on top of Natsu's desk. "Let's fight right now. I'll kick your ass so hard, you won't even remember what your ass feels like."

"I wouldn't get so cocky if I were you," Natsu said, also standing up. "I'll whip you until you're all out of blood."

"Both of you, stop it!" A chair suddenly went flying between Natsu and Gray, forcing the both of them away from each other. They turned in the direction the chair had come from, and saw Erza exercising her arm.

"What was that for?" Natsu roared, turning on her. "You had no right to do that! You could've killed me!"

However, before Natsu could reach her, Erza glared at him so sharply, Natsu felt slightly scared and meekly walked back to his seat. As Gray also did the same after seeing Erza's expression, Natsu suddenly saw a bunch of scenes where Erza separated a fighting Natsu and Gray. The strange thing was, Natsu didn't remember any of this happening when he was younger.

"Dragneel, you just saw something again, didn't you?" Lucy suddenly asked. "I can see it in your eyes. Tell me."

"It was just Erza separating me and Gray when we were going to fight," Natsu said as he shrugged. "It seemed to show a span of a few years, though." He smirked. "You looked pretty cool with an eye patch and armor," he said to Erza, who gave him another glare.

"Ms. Vermillion, what does this mean?" Juvia asked quietly to the thinking woman. "Do the dreams signify anything important?"

"Hm, it's quite hard to tell," Ms. Vermillion said, her brows furrowed in concentration. "Is that all of your dreams you've had so far, Natsu?" she asked.

Natsu thought for a moment, then shook his head. "Wait, there's one more. I had it earlier today. Me and Heartfilia were in some sort of a room. There was red stuff spreading all over the walls. The two of us tried reaching for each other, but we were both eventually blown away from each other."

"Aw, that's so sweet," Levy gushed. "You and Lucy tried to be with each other, even though it was impossible. Perhaps Nalu will become a possibility --"

"Is that it?" Lucy interrupted her friend. "Besides you screaming my name, since I remember that from earlier."

"You know, if he really did scream your name, he probably wasn't telling the truth about his dream."

"Nah, then it would be Lucy screaming Natsu's name."

"I think it could work both ways, don't you think, Jellal?"

"I think you both need to shut the hell up before you get two chairs thrown at your faces."

Gajeel and Gray looked up from their wonderful conversation to see Natsu and Lucy glaring daggers at the pair. According to Juvia, it "could not compare with Erza-san's."

"Alright, if that's all, Natsu, perhaps you could share your dreams with us, Lucy," Ms. Vermillion said before Natsu or Lucy could attack his annoying friends. "And sit down, all of you. I think this is all very exciting, don't you think?"

"Well, it is interesting to hear of a world where Lucy and Natsu get along so well," Erza commented from her seat. "Don't you agree, Jellal?"

"One hundred percent," Jellal said, not looking away from the clock.

"Great! Lucy, where do your dreams start?"

Natsu glanced at Lucy as she began talking, only because he wanted to know about her dreams.

"In my first one, Dragneel and I were in a green field, just sitting on the grass. He asked me if he ever told me he loved me, and I said he told me a thousand times, so he told me loved me for the thousand and first time."

Everyone stared at Natsu when she said this, and Natsu's face turned the lightest shade of red. There was no way he would say that to anybody who was or looked like Heartfilia. She had to be making this up.

"In my second one, I was standing on the edge of a high tower, hands tied behind my back. I jumped off and Dragneel somehow caught me in mid-air."

Natsu was the center of attention again, making him uncomfortable. Also, why was he the only one who did something in Lucy's dreams? Surely she had done something, as well.

"In my third one, Dragneel wasn't in it. It was just me and my father, and I was yelling at him about how Fairy Tail was my family."

"Hold on, I have a question," Natsu blurted out as soon as Lucy finished. "For the first two dreams, are you sure that was all that happened? You didn't leave anything out?"

Lucy rolled her eyes. "Fine. You were wearing a white scarf around your neck --"

Natsu ignored her and snatched the notebook off of her desk. He flipped through the pages and began reading out loud.

"'Dragneel and I were in a green field. My head was in his lap and he was playing with my hair.' Hm," Natsu looked up to face Lucy. "I don't remember you mentioning that before."

"Give me my notebook back," Lucy hissed, lunging for Natsu, but Erza held her back.

"Leave him, I want to know. Continue reading, Natsu."

Smirking, Natsu happily obliged. "'He asked me if he ever told me he loved me. I told him he told me a thousand times. He then told me he loved me for the thousand and first time. I told him I loved him for the thousand and first time, too.' Oh, look at that," Natsu said, looking up from the notebook. "She said she loved me too. Now for dream two." He flipped the page and began reading.

"'I was standing on the edge of a high building. My hands were tied behind my back, and I knew I had to get out of there quickly. I jumped, screaming Dragneel's name as I did so.'" At this, Natsu let out a mocking gasp. "You screamed my name, too?" he asked, causing giggles to erupt from Lucy's friends. "How sweet.

"'He somehow caught me in mid-air, and the both of us went flying into a broken wall. He angled his body so only he would feel the impact. When the dust cleared, I was grateful that he had saved me, but I also felt guilt at the same time.' Lovely." Natsu slammed the book shut and tossed it back onto Lucy's desk. "If I remember correctly, you left out a lot of information for those two dreams, Heartfilia," he said as Erza freed her friend. "That's not really fair. I told you everything, and you took out half of the information in yours."

"Whatever," Lucy snapped, as she probably had no better comeback. "Well, now you know. What is there to talk about, now?"

"Excellent question, Lucy," Ms. Vermillion said from her spot on the teacher's desk. "What is there to talk about, now? What are some theories you guys have about Natsu's and Lucy's dreams?"

"I don't think they're coincidental," Levy started off. "They're both having dreams about each other, there has to be some sort of meaning behind it."

"Juvia agrees," Juvia added. "And they dreamed about other people, too. Maybe they were reincarnated."

"So they're dreaming about their past lives?" Gray scoffed. "Even if that is true, what are the odds that they're here together, again?"

"None," Gajeel deadpanned. "No offense, head," he said to Ms. Vermillion, "but I don't understand why we have talking about this."

"Come on, Gajeel, it's fun!" Levy said before Ms. Vermillion could answer. "Even if all this turns out to be one big coincidence, we can think of this as a mystery!"

Gajeel looked like he was about to say something, but closed his mouth before he actually spoke, looking away, instead. "Mysteries are boring," he finally muttered.

"The iron freak is right," Jellal said as he drank water. "You have to do research and stuff in a mystery, and nobody wants to do that."

"Really?" Erza said. "I think it would be cool. We could pretend to be spies or detectives and have cool disguises and stuff."

At this, Jellal choked on his water, causing the entire room alarm. Erza immediately began pounding on her boyfriend's back.

"Are you okay, Jellal?" she asked as she pounded.

"I -- I'm fine!" Jellal managed out as she continued thumping. "Please stop."

"What?"

"He said he won't be okay if you continue beating him up like that," Natsu translated for the poor senior.

"Oh, oops." Erza stopped her workout, but Jellal couldn't move from his hunched over position for a few minutes.

"So, you all think they're dreaming of a Lucy Heartfilia and Natsu Dragneel from another life?" Ms. Vermillion asked the group as Jellal tried to recover.

"I don't think it necessarily has to be another life," Lucy said. "It could be a different world, entirely. Earlier, Dragneel said he and Gray were surrounded by fire and ice. And he saw rainbow-colored trees. I doubt Earth was like that even once in its history."

"Then next time, maybe we can see if that's true or not!" Ms. Vermillion said with excitement. "There's a 78% chance I'll be able to let you guys use the laptops to let you research this on Monday."

"78%?"

"Laptops?"

"Research?"

"Monday?"

Natsu, Gray, Gajeel, and Jellal were stunned at how precise and eager Ms. Vermillion was, to figure out what this all meant. Thankfully, they weren't the only ones.

"Ms. Vermillion?" Levy asked tentatively. "If I may ask, why are you so interested in Lucy's and Natsu's dreams? There's a possibility that we're wrong, and this may all just be a coincidence."

The head thought for a while before answering. "I want to get closer to you guys, and I also want you all to be doing something while you're here. I know detention will be boring if you do absolutely nothing. Wouldn't it be better to do this? Consider it an . . . elective, if you will." Ms. Vermillion looked up at the clock and sighed.

"We only have six minutes left," she said disappointed. "I don't think it would hurt if I let you all out early --"

"Yes!" Jellal jumped up from his seat and grabbed his belongings. "See you Monday, Erza!" he yelled right before he ran out of the door.

"What's with him?" Natsu muttered.

"What exactly do we know about Jellal, again?" Gray asked.

"Who cares?" Gajeel scoffed. "He's rarely around, anyways, and I doubt he's a psycho killer."

"Sorry about him, Ms. Vermillion," Natsu heard Erza say to the head. "He said he had somewhere he needed to be."

"No, it's alright," Ms. Vermillion replied, still smiling. "I know how busy he is."

"You do?"

Ms. Vermillion only smiled wider. "Don't you all want to leave, now?" she asked the remaining five. "There's only a few minutes left, and I doubt anyone will stop you."

"Hey, want to stop by 8Ball Island?" Gray asked Natsu on their way out. "Gajeel's buying."

"Since when? You never said anything about that."

"Thanks, but I should probably go home," Natsu said as Gajeel tormented Gray. "Because of the news, and all."

"Oh yeah, I forgot that happened today. It seems like it happened a long time ago."

"Yeah, because it's not your life the press are concerned with."

"Yeah, that's probably why. Well, see ya!" Gray speed-walked away, although it quickly turned into a run when Gajeel began to follow him.

Natsu shook his head at the people he called his friends as he made his way to his car.

A/N:
More insight on the dreams, more questions about Jellal (although it might be obvious now), and more closer to Nalu moments.
