Chapter 23 - Busted
They returned from the small woodland, hearts newly healed and their lips tender.
"Am I forgiven then?" Hiccup smiled.
"If you weren't," Merida ran her fingers across his shoulder, up his neck and tilted his chin to meet hers, "I wouldn't be doing this."
She kissed him on the cheek softly. Hiccup sighed with relief and reached for Merida's hand.
"I guess that's a yes," he whispered, locking their fingers together. "Come on. We have to get changed for dinner."
"Is that code for 'get the midnight feast ready'?" Merida grinned.
"You know me too well."
"Well I have had two lives to learn you inside and out."
"I hope that's not a euphemism..."
"I meant it metaphorically!!"
"Good," Hiccup smiled.
Merida shook her head and rolled her eyes sarcastically, but she was still grinning.
They reached the dormitories and the moment they arrived Rapunzel and Jack both walked out of their separate rooms. They both looked pretty panicked, they must have been waiting for them a while.
"Well?" Rapunzel asked, eyes wide and questioning. Merida and Hiccup looked at their fingers clasped together, at each other, then back at Rapunzel and Jack and grinned. Jack smirked and whispered to Rapunzel,
"I think it was fair to say there was a lot of making up going on in those trees." Merida glared at him, raised her free hand and scrunched it into a fist.
"Don't make me warn you again Frosty."
"Sorry Furball," Jack grinned, "couldn't help myself."
Merida raised her eyebrows, but lowered her fist. Hiccup grinned at her and Rapunzel had to stifle a giggle.
"We're not having dinner here I trust?" Rapunzel asked. Hiccup shook his head.
"God no! We're having another midnight feast of course!" Jack laughed at the thought. "Have you seen what they're cooking?"
"They saidit was lasagne," Merida wrinkled her nose, "but I couldn't see much lasagne related ingredients in it..."
"Midnight feast," Rapunzel said firmly. "Same time as last night?"
Jack nodded and Hiccup grinned at the thought.
"Just make sure you're careful."
"Rich coming from the boy who lost an entire dragon in his past life!" Rapunzel snorted.
"Well I found him again, didn't I?"
"We'll talk about that later. See you at eleven?" Merida asked, looking at the two boys, who nodded. "We'll be wearing our best pyjamas," she joked as she and Rapunzel walked into their dormitory. Hiccup and Jack ran inside their own room and panicked.
"What do they mean by 'best pyjamas?!'" Jack hissed.
"Don't look at me!" Hiccup retorted quickly, "I know nothing about stuff like that!"
"Well, what the heck are we supposed to wear then?"
"Our pyjamas genius!"
"But I only brought one pair!"
"And?"
"And they're wearing their best pyjamas!"
"Jack," Hiccup said slowly, "I think Merida might have been joking."
"But what if she wasn't? What if it's supposed to be the red carpet of pyjamas or something?"
"Stop being childish!"
"I'm not!"
"Fine - just shut up and get into your pyjamas."
"Should I keep my boxers underneath?"
"Yes! Too many bad things could happen!"
"Fair point. Do you have anything left from last time?"
"A packet of Skittles we didn't eat and I think Merida had some chocolate bars left. You?"
"One more packet of Oreos."
"We'll be fine."
Eleven o' clock approached and the girls made their way as quietly as they could into Jack and Hiccup's room. The two boys had to try not to whistle; the two girls were wearing shorts and thin t-shirts, but they both had had enough sense to put bras on underneath.
"What are you two staring at?" Merida asked, smirking as she saw their dazed expressions. They both snapped out of trance and said quickly,
"Nothing!"
"Punzie," Merida said, pretending to debate the issue, "I think we should get changed."
"What? Don't do that!" Hiccup said quickly, too quickly. Merida smirked again and he blushed beet red.
"This is why he was so quiet last time," Jack said, grinning. Merida laughed and Hiccup just went even redder.
"What I mean is - well, you don't have to get changed if you don't want, but you look, um, you look gorge- no, pretty, no..., Um, you look, NICE! Yeah, you look nice. And um, I just didn't think we needed to - er - waste any more time, and -"
"Hiccup," Rapunzel smiled, "it's fine. They were only joking."
Hiccup's blush faded slightly (thank Odin) and he was able to talk properly as they got out their sweets and chocolate. They were just about to crack open the Oreos when they heard a knock on their door.
"Quick!" Jack hissed. "Under the bed!"
Rapunzel and Merida scrambled for cover, taking the sweets with them so they wouldn't be seen. Hiccup jumped under the covers of his duvet and feigned sleep. There was another knock, louder this time. Jack checked that Rapunzel and Merida were out of sight, and opened the door.
"Hello?"
It was the angry lady in the saggy vest top. Although she wasn't wearing a saggy vest top this evening, she was wearing saggy grey pyjamas.
"What are you doing up so late Mr Overland?"
"Waking up because you knocked on our door."
"I heard voices. Why were you awake at eleven? The rules say lights out at ten at the latest."
"Hiccup couldn't sleep well. He had a nightmare and he woke me up. I calmed him down and he's sleeping again, see?" Hiccup wasn't usually a good actor but today he could have won an Oscar for his pretending to be asleep.
"I heard other voices. Girl's voices. Do you know anything about that?"
"No..."
"Well, I'm just going to check on Miss Dunbroch and Miss Corona then -"
"Don't do that!" Jack said far too quickly. The woman raised an eyebrow questioningly. Jack made up a story fast as lightning: "One of them has lady problems. At the moment. She's been really stroppy all day. I wouldn't wake her up. Seriously, she will go crazy."
She stood there, defeated.
"If I hear one more noise coming from this room then you, Mr Haddock, Miss Dunbroch and Miss Corona will all be put in punishment for the rest of this summer camp. No more activities, only cleaning and helping the cooks. Is that clear?"
"... Yes ma'am," Jack said quietly.
"Good." She left and stormed down the corridor. Jack waited until she was out of sight, then signalled to the others that it was safe to come out and Merida and Rapunzel emerged from underneath the creaking beds.
"We can't do this again," Rapunzel whispered. "Not now she knows."
"We can if we're careful," Hiccup said slowly. "We'll try next week. But we'll have plenty of time to talk anyway."
"We've got to go," Merida tugged Rapunzel's hand. "We can't stay here after that. She could come back any time."
"See you in the morning," Hiccup smiled shyly. Merida grinned and gave him a quick hug before leaving.
"Bye," Rapunzel whispered, kissing Jack on the cheek and smiling through the crack in the door as she followed Merida.
Jack and Hiccup both turned to each other and hi-fived.
"Cha-ching!"
"Boom! Two kisses in one day!"
"Pft. Merida's a better kisser than Punzie."
"You wish. Just because I got the better looking one."
"What did you say about my girlfriend?"
"Nothing! Look, these beds look really comfortable - how about sleeping?"
"You are so annoying it kills me."
The pair of them went to sleep with grins on their faces and feeling quite possibly the happiest they could have been their whole life.
