09 | Late night walks and street fights

Jungkook had an unreserved love for the dark. He enjoyed hiding in the shadows, preferring to look from afar and observe people surreptitiously. Perhaps his so called 'hatred' towards the daytime was deeply rooted in the depths of his dreary past.

The golden rays of the morning sun reminded him of Taehyung's blonde hair, his eyes had the color of the blue sky, so saturated and always lively. He, albeit a simple human, was endowed with tremendous magnificence.

Taehyung changed Jungkook's itinerary without even attempting to get involved into the complicated mess of paths that the angel's life was. He dauntlessly impeded his way, making a ploy to infatuate Jungkook and then taunt him for being a fool.

The angel fell for a human who couldn't care less about the consequences of their forbidden love and was coerced into watching him suffer a death so heinous and unfair.

That was the reason why he despised the daylight and often found his solace into the peaceful nights. Striding carelessly down the murky streets of Seoul city, deprived of location and purpose. The mundane routine of a fallen angel whose wings could no longer fly him to Heaven, neither slither him down to the atrocious pits of Hell.

Jungkook released a gust of air into the frosty night, gloved palms stuffed in the pockets of his wool coat and Chelsea boots rattling against the damp pavement. The smell of petrichor was completely magnifying exponentially, pervading the space, almost dowsing it in an invisible cloud of mist.

As he strolled mindlessly across the hollow alleys, he heard the disturbing noise of a growling animal. He was in that part of the city which most of the supernatural creatures favored to dwell. It was chock-full of dangerous monsters such as vampires, werewolves, demons, and evil witches.

Humans couldn't explain the extraordinary murders that happened here every once in a while, so they usually blamed felons and rebels for the massive number of crimes which occurred in this region.

More growls resulted, then a sound similar to choking pierced through the calm ambiance, causing Jungkook's inner curiosity to spike up. As he neared the area with every following step, an extremely familiar scent overwhelmed his nostrils. The poisonous stench of ichor was in the air, sharp and metallic.

Carefully, he peered over the concrete wall of a building block, stilling at the sight of three monstrous figures gorging on a scarlet heap comparable to human guts. The realization that hit him in this moment was immediate.

Wendigos.

Cannibalistic creatures who got fed on human flesh. Probably the most appalling species one could meet after getting to know Jungkook's realm. Perhaps the hunters were right for one thing - sometimes the supernatural kin weren't at all that glorious and wonderful.

Scrunching up his nose in utter disgust, the angel took a furtive step back, not noticing the bin that happened to stand just behind him. The loud clatter of spewed coke cans and empty bottles of beer disturbed the wendigos' feast, making them lock their bloody red eyes on the only person who was crazy enough to roam the city at night - aka Jungkook.

"Another human!" One of the crooked wendigos chirped up, bald head slightly askew and glossed lips tilted up in a smile of pure delight.

"How can we know if he isn't one of those hunters?" Another ugly creature spoke up, voice groggy and features contorted into a pensive frown.

"He doesn't even have a smell!" The third monster joined, throat taut and yellow teeth shown on display.

Raising his hands in a sign of surrender, Jungkook pulled out his best smile. "I'm sorry to interrupt your dinner," his eyes skidded to the muddle of bowels, nearly gagging at the view. "I just happened to pass by."

The creatures, however, didn't seem to be at all that convinced with the story. The trio started moving forward, crawling on the dirty ground, threatening to corner Jungkook between the wall of the building block and them.

The angel's look visibly darkened upon noticing the trap in which the wendigos were pushing him. Of course, his prowess couldn't be compared to theirs, having in mind he was one of the most ancient creatures to inhibit these lands.

In this position, though, Jungkook was overpowered due to the limited space and time to attack. Wendigos were known for their speed and strength in battles. They could easily throw themselves on Jungkook and slice him to ribbons with their claws alone.

"Three against one," the angel clicked his tongue, feeling how his back was being pressed against the cold wall. Some pathetic meters were separating him from the band of starved monsters. It was a matter of time before one of the wendigos decided to act and launch himself on Jungkook, if not the three of them at once. "This is a very unfair game, don't you think?"

If he couldn't get out of the situation alone, Jungkook could use his best knack - blabbering random bunkums - to distract the creatures and save some time.

"I'm tired of this," the wendigo who stood in the middle snarled. Jungkook assumed he was the one in charge of the other two, judging by how impetuous and demanding he behaved. "Let's just kill him and feast on his- "

Right before he could finish his sentence, the loud ringing of fired bullets bounced off the buildings, and the three wendigos fell to the ground with a triumphant thud. Blood poured out of the wounds in their skulls, forming a small puddle of red.

Jungkook's chest was heaving up and down from how hard he was breathing. Looking ahead of the presumingly dead corpses, he spotted the slim frame of a man with blonde locks of hair which reflected the lights of the streetlamps. His eyes bulged out of their holes upon recognizing the wielder of the gun.

Taehyung.

"Don't just stay there," Taehyung suddenly said, sounding rather annoyed. He was wearing a long coat, gloves which had cuts on the fingertips, and a black beanie. Pulling out another gun from his holster, he hurled it at Jungkook who, surprisingly, caught it. "They will wake up soon."

The angel averted his gaze to the weapon in his hand, examining the fine details. Although, Jungkook had lived for thousands of years, humans and their Ingenious innovations never ceased to amaze him. The handle was attached to a metal tube, through which a metal ball was propelled by exploding black powder.

"How do you always know where to find me?" The angel quizzed, meanwhile tasting the heavy weapon in his hold.

"I have my ways," Taehyung explained shortly, loading his own gun after noticing the stirring of the wendigos. He looked perfectly calm for someone fully prepared to kill a bunch of monsters. "You know how to use a gun, right?"

"I think so..." Jungkook trailed off, positioning his finger on the trigger, and aiming at the shuffling creature whose bones were making an awfully cracking noise.

"You better do," Taehyung grabbed a silver dagger from his garter belt. "Because I'm not dying tonight."

The angel couldn't help but wince at the flippant remark, not liking the connotations of the word 'dying', especially after hearing it coming out of Taehyung's mouth.

Jungkook watched with rising adrenaline as the three wendigos slowly returned their consciousness. Instead of wasting any more time, he aimed at the back of the closest monster's head. He took a shot, dropping the wendigo right in front of him with a spray of blood and gray matter across every surface in a five-foot radius.

"Not bad," Taehyung admired the job with an approval nod of his head.

"He isn't dead, though," Jungkook stated after seeing that the creature hadn't turned to ashes yet.

"He will be after I'm done with- "The last of his words fell short. Taehyung's body was knocked out on the ground by a wendigo.

It was a fury of hysteric bellows, flashes of claws, and the hunter grunted as the monster's large posture collided with his, its jaw widening in attack, snapping at his neck, but Taehyung swung his arm in the way, letting its teeth sink into the thick wool of his jacket.

A groan left Taehyung's lips, facial features scrunching up in pain after having the creature's sharp canines dug in his skin.

"Stupid bitch," he cursed through tightly gritted teeth, plunging his dagger into the wendigo's throat, its blood pouring down over his mouth, making him cough.

The monster's jaw went slack, and his canines were no longer sinking into the hunter's arm. His body started falling apart till there was left a pile of embers which dispersed into the air.

By the time Taehyung had raised back on his feet, the other two were already wide awake and raging with the imperceptible urge for vengeance. Both were staring right at Jungkook, growling, and swearing like there was no tomorrow.

Before they could lounge at the angel, Taehyung and Jungkook shot concurrently, and the wendigos' limbs turned to ashes after witnessing the final critical blast.

With the last one down, the alley was clear for the moment - at least until more creatures started appearing. Jungkook looked at Taehyung, who was squatted among the bloodied puddles, wiping his dagger off on some tissue he'd taken out of his coat to clean it. As he finished, he stood up and faced the angel, reaching out to snatch the gun out of his hands.

"I..." Jungkook faked a cough to get rid of the lump in his throat. Honestly, he hadn't imagined he would meet Taehyung in the midst of this abattoir. He wasn't prepared to speak with him in the first place, what about fighting along a group of ferocious wendigos. "Should I thank you or..."

"I didn't do it to save you," the hunter amended, putting his guns back at the holster. He wasn't looking Jungkook in the eyes, though there was a proximity between them that didn't go undetected. "I just found it relevant to trust you."

"And now you're not going to try to kill me?" Jungkook cocked a brow, somewhat entertained by the whole conversation. His expression was inherently playful, like he wasn't at all that affected by the fact they just slaughtered three of the most hideous creatures of Hell.

With a swift move, Taehyung grabbed his gun and pointed it right at Jungkook's temple, eyes devoid of any emotion. The angel didn't flinch or tremble at the drastic change of events. He was more than aware that in this lifetime Taehyung held nothing but hostility for him.

"Don't push your luck," he was harsh in his tone, the words like mud, crumbling from his tongue, unearthing themselves upon Jungkook's ears, horrendous to behold, as if they were somehow dirty to hear. "I let you slip through my fingers far too many times. Don't think I will make it easy for you this time."

"I'm not your enemy, Taehyung." The angel said calmly, though the blood was pumping in his veins fast, minding the barrel of the gun which was located right between his eyes. A bullet would cause hell of a pain, but not a terminal death, because no human was capable of killing a dark angel.

"Stop saying my name!" Taehyung grumbled, a massive wave of dizziness hit him sideways, sending him swaying and almost losing a grip of the hollow cylinder. Beads of sweat were beginning to form on his forehead, the tan of his skin losing its shade.

Jungkook's eyebrows furrowed in concern. He watched as Taehyung groped at the area around his arm from where blood was oozing in a rapid pace. "The wendigo's bitten you," he said after the realization of Taehyung's state dawned on him.

"Shit is going down," the hunter grunted, staggering forward as the pain hit - first a deep, dull ache and then white-hot, stopping his words short and punching the oxygen right out of his chest. He felt the poisonous effect of the bite mark, suffered through the waves of constant throbbing.

The world gave a hard, nauseating spin around him, knocking him off balance and bringing him down to his knees. Taehyung felt like he was sucking in air in giant gasps, but it only came in short, quick little breaths. The edges of his peripheral started to creep in, dark and hazy as they closed in around the angel's face. Someone was still talking - the dark angel - saying get up and you can't die right now but Taehyung thought that was probably his imagination, a vision, because a hellish creature wouldn't be saying those things to a hunter. He was hallucinating - this was like a dream - this was like a nightmare he would wake up from any moment now.

Then everything turned black.
