III
Beep, beep, beep
Her heart was beating again. That was all Daniel could think about.
He felt smaller than an insect when the beep went still. He wanted to do something. Daniel thought about bursting into her room or run to the hospital's chapel and pray.
But he was no doctor, and God should be angry at him. When Daniel heard the news about Jonathan being dead and the little hope for Samantha to ever wake up, he had cursed God. He turned around from the doctor's impassive face and slammed his open hand against the wall. He asked so with such fervor, bagged on his knees, and yet... To hell with God. If his life hadn't turned into a tragedy, the sentence that echoed in his mind would be comical.
Another five days had gone since her heart failed. Those were the doctor's words. He hated the expression. Her heart didn't fail. How could such a perfect thing fail? It faltered; it paused but didn't fail.
"Came back to me," Daniel repeated. He shifted in the chair. He knew that he wasn't a character of a drama, but still, it was worth trying, he thought when he looked into her lips and kissed her. She didn't move. She continued to sleep.
His hand caressed her face. He twirled a curl of Samantha's hair in his finger. His head dropped next to her's. Daniel's mouth grazed Samantha's ear, "I miss you so much."
Their bodies remained close, but his eyes darted to the heart shape in the monitor's corner. Movement. Beep, beep, beep. Life.
And then in her hand, even so lightly. Movement.
He didn't dare face her, but sensed the change in her breathing. She felt tired, like she had been walking for days.
Daniel panicked at the possibility of her heart stopping again. He stood up with a renewed force, ready to ask for help. Then he saw her open eyes.
"Sam, Sam..." He moved to hold her, kiss her, but a thunder of reason resonated in his mind. "I will call the doctors," he said, shaking.
"Wait."
Her voice was barely above a whisper, but Daniel listened. Her voice, her lips... moving. All was good in the world again.
He dropped on his knees by her side. He didn't lose her. Daniel had his love back. "What is it, love?"
She swallowed, trying to clear her throat to make sure Daniel could hear her, "I missed you too."
THE END
