Chapter 9

Barry Allen

Clarity continued to cry into my chest as we waited for Holly to get home. It was around eight at the time. Clarity looked up at me and I swear I saw a flash of purple electricity in her eyes. "I don't understand why his collar was missing. Where could it have gone?" she whispered suddenly, swiping her tears away before standing up. I shrugged.

"I honestly have no idea. But what I don't get is how the past vet didn't catch the cancer. That's not something you miss if he had it for at least a year," I replied. She nodded.

"Yeah, that threw me off, too. I never thought about it, though. I was too busy crying. Oh gosh. It made me look so weak. I'm sorry you had to see me like that," she apologized. I shook my head.

"No. No, no, no, no. Clarity, it doesn't make you weak. That was your dog. Dogs are just as much of a family member as anyone else is. If anything it shows that you were strong. You were strong enough to end his pain, even if it meant giving it to you. I don't know if I could ever do that," I told the blonde softly. She nodded and took a sip from a water bottle. The front door opened and we both turned to look at Holly. Her smile disappeared when she saw our faces.

"Clar, what's wrong?" she questioned, setting down her purse. She looked around the house. "Where's Barry?" Clarity nodded at me.

"Uh, Holly, listen," I started. She nodded. "Barry had cancer. We took him to the vet right after you left and they told us that he's had it for at least a year. We had to put him down. He was in so much pain. I'm so sorry," I said. She nodded and wiped the tears away. Her mascara was running, making me realize that Clarity doesn't wear any makeup.

"Oh. Well, thank you for telling me, Barry. I, uh, think I'm going to get some sleep. I had a long night," she replied. I nodded.

"We can talk about your date in the morning. I promise," Clarity told the teenager. Holly nodded and shut her bedroom door. I followed Clarity into her bedroom, making sure she was okay. "Barry?"

"Hm?" I looked over to my best friend.

"Do you think you could stay the night or something? I'm afraid that both Holly and I wouldn't be able to handle it alone," she whispered. I nodded.

"Yeah. Yeah, of course I'll stay. I can sleep on the couch-" She cut me off.

"I can sleep on the couch. You can take the bed. You have work in the morning."

"We both do."

"No. You have work." I nodded as it hit me. Flash business. "I get up later than you anyways. Goodnight."

"Night," I said faintly. She walked out of the room, pulling a blanket off of the couch and over her body. I felt bad for taking her bed, but realized she was right. The last thing on my mind before I fell asleep was her eyes and the way the electricity flashed in them. Was she The Violet Flash?

I walked in the Cortex the next morning, coffee in hand. Violet looked up from chatting quietly with Cisco. "Hey, Barry," she said, her voice blurry. Of course she uses that trick along with blurring her face. I smiled at her and she returned it before going back into the conversation with Cisco.

"I'm so sorry you had to go through that, Violet," Cisco whispered. Violet nodded and shrugged.

"Yeah. He was a good dog. But I couldn't see him in pain anymore," she replied. I furrowed my eyebrows.

"You put down your dog last night?" I asked. She nodded.

"Yeah. I actually saw you and a girl in the waiting room. The blonde girl. I think you said her name was Clarity." I nodded. "Tell her I'm sorry about what happened to her dog," she added. I nodded again.

"Will do, Violet," I said eyeing her. I searched her eyes and saw a flash of purple electricity, making me jump. She chuckled.

"You were spacing out. I had to do something to get your attention," she explained. I nodded.

"R-right." I shook my head. Was I just seeing things? I glanced at Violet again who was now grinning while her and Cisco fangirled over something. From what I could see of the blonde hair, it was the same. The green eyes were also the same. Then I caught sight of a few strands of purple in her hair. Is it possible? "I'm going to be right back," I muttered, walking out of the Cortex and down the hall. I hid around the corner and pulled out my phone before dialing Clarity's number. It rang a few times before she answered.

"Hey, Barry," she greeted, sounding depressed.

"Hey, Clar. Where are you?" I questioned. She sighed.

"At work. It's a slow day and Eddie and Joe are working on a case that Captain Singh doesn't want me on for some reason. I don't think he likes me. What about you? How's your other work going?" I heard papers shuffling in the background. Suddenly Violet sped down the other end of the hallway and outside. I heard the sound of wind from her phone.

"Did I just hear wind?" She cleared her throat.

"Y-yeah. Just a windy day," she lied. She's such a liar. I was just outside minutes ago. There's wasn't even the slightest breeze. If it weren't for me being outside then I probably would've believed her.

"Right. Listen, I have to go. A call just came up," I lied.

"Okay. Bye!" she chirped before hanging up. I hid around the corner as Violet came speeding by. She stopped just outside the doors of the Cortex, grabbing her mask that was down. She looked around before pulling it back up. My eyes widened. That was Clarity Parker.
