Chapter 18
Clarity Parker
"Holly, you're going to be late!" I yelled as I washed the dishes.
"I'm almost ready! Give me a second!" she shouted me. I rolled my eyes and turned off the sink. I glanced at Barry who was reading the newspaper with his speed. I smiled to myself before Holly came hopping out of her room, trying to get her shoe on. She finally got it on, adjusted her uniform tie, and grabbed her backpack before racing out of the apartment to catch the bus in time. I chuckled and shook my head.
"Ready for work?" I asked Barry. He looked up at me for a second before looking back at the newspaper.
"Singh gave you the day off. Something about working too hard," he muttered, too focused on the paper in front of him. I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion. I opened my mouth to argue when Barry cut me off. "We both know that it's true, Clar. Now I have to go to work because I don't work too hard. I'm surprised I haven't been fired." I chuckled as he kissed me. "I'll see you later at STAR Labs," he told me before speeding out. I sighed and glanced around the clean apartment.
"Clarity," the barista called out. I walked up to the counter and took my drink from her, thanking her and smiling a bit at her. I walked out of Jitters and down the sidewalk, sipping my hot chocolate. Someone bumped into me and I almost dropped my hot chocolate, catching it with my speed before letting it fall to the ground.
"I am so sorry," they apologized. I looked up and saw the familiar blonde from Starling City. "Clarity," she said with a smile. I looked behind her and saw Kat running up to us.
"Felicity, Ray says he's on his way to STAR Labs now. We have to go," Kat told her. Kat looked at me, smiling. "Hey."
"What are you guys doing in town?" I questioned as we walked towards STAR Labs.
"My boyfriend needs help with his ATOM suit he designed." I raised an eyebrow. "Ray Palmer. The guy who took over Queen Consolidated." I nodded.
"Ah. The one screwing your best friend, which I'm assuming is Felicity," I replied. Kat chuckled while Felicity glared at her. I just grinned as we walked into STAR Labs.
"You told her?" Felicity asked. Kat shrugged.
"I was actually on the phone with her when Ray yelled at me for being on the phone during work. We might argue just a bit." Felicity raised an eyebrow, making Kat roll her eyes. "Okay, maybe a lot."
"That's my boyfriend," Felicity informed us as Ray landed. I cringed at the harsh landing, imagining how much it must've hurt. He took off his helmet and grinned, waving at us.
"Hi. I'm Ray." Kat face palmed while I burst out laughing. He pointed to me. "There's two of you," he muttered in confusion. "Kat never mentioned anything about a twin."
"Cousin, actually. I'm Clarity Parker," I replied, holding out my hand for him to shake. "Welcome to Central City. Felicity said something about you needing help with your suit?" He nodded.
"Yes. She did."
"Bees. I'm out," Cisco said with his hand raised. Barry looked to me, his puppy dog eyes trying to get me to give in. I shrugged, sighing.
"I would help, but I'm allergic to bees. Sorry." He frowned. "I'm sorry. Do you want your girlfriend to die from a bee sting? Because if I died you'd be the one taking care of Holly."
"What's so bad about taking care of Holly?" he asked.
"Barry, she's a teenage girl." He nodded. Caitlin chuckled when she saw where this was going. "A teenage girl with hormones and a monthly gift." All the men in the room cringed. "Yeah. I thought so," I said with a smirk.
"So you and Cisco are out. Okay. Got it," he replied awkwardly. I chuckled and turned to the ATOM suit, sneaking a glance at Ray. Kat grabbed her bow and pulled on her mask.
"And I have to pay a visit to someone that's long overdue. Excuse me for a few hours," she told us before walking out, geared up in her Purple Arrow suit. Ray looked to Felicity and I.
"Violent ex-boyfriend," we chorused. He nodded.
"This is amazing. Two cousins are both heroes in two different cities, and they're both known for the color purple. Anything else that makes this even cooler?" Cisco asked, huge grin on his face. I shook my head.
"Nope. Just that my color is violet, not purple. And that if you think you have a chance with either of us, you're very wrong." He frowned. "Did you seriously think that she would go after you? Dude, she lives 600 miles away." Cisco shrugged.
"There's something called long distance dating, Clarity," he shot back. I rolled my eyes and looked to Dr. Wells who cleared his throat.
"Anyways, how do we stop this metahuman that can control bees?" We all exchanged glances before Cisco and I shrugged.
"I'm not on this case," I said, hands in the air. I looked to Cisco who just slowly backed away towards the suit. I scoffed.
"Clarity?" I looked up from tweaking the suit to see Ray staring at me.
"Hm?"
"How much do you know about Felicity?" Ray asked. I shrugged.
"Enough, why?"
"I don't know. I just realized that I don't actually know that much about her. How much do you know about Barry?" I chuckled.
"Ray, you're in a relationship with Felicity because you like her. You'll get to know her. Barry and I are a different story. We've been best friends since we were kids. I knew him when I was 11 and I know him now. You have a long time to get to know Felicity as long as we fix this suit so that you don't get killed," I explained. He nodded and gave me a grateful smile. Suddenly Barry walked into the room and glanced at me before walking over to Caitlin and Dr. Wells.
"What's going on with you guys?" Ray asked. I shrugged.
"Nothing. I don't know what's up with him. We were fine a minute ago," I muttered before going back to work on the ATOM suit. Suddenly my phone beeped and I let out a groan. "I have to go. It's work. Joe needs me." Ray nodded as I sped out of STAR Labs and towards the Precinct.
"Clarity, you're here. Good. How is it going with the bee case?" Joe asked. I shrugged.
"I'm not on the case. I'm helping with Ray's suit. That's something to ask Barry. Want me to give you a lift?" I questioned. He shook his head.
"No. I'll get over there myself with the car that I own." I chuckled. "Oh. And Singh wanted to see you in his office. Something about you being someone's emergency contact." I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion before heading to Singh's office. I knocked on the door before opening it.
"Hey, Captain. Joe said that you wanted to see me." He nodded.
"You might want to sit down."
"I'm fine standing, Sir." He nodded again.
"Very well then. I just got a call from the hospital saying that you were listed as an emergency contact on someone. No, it's not Holly. No need to worry." I sighed in relief. "But I think this is something you might want to see. I'll send Thawne with you there to give you a lift since you don't have a car yet." I thanked him before walking over to Eddie's desk.
"Singh said that you're supposed to come with me to the hospital," I informed Eddie. He nodded and led me to his car.
"Yeah. He told me. Who are you an emergency contact for besides your sister?" he questioned. I shrugged.
"No one that's alive or that should be in Central City," I replied.
I walked up to the desk and the lady looked up. "How can I help you, Ma'am?" she asked sweetly. I held up my badge.
"Detective Clarity Parker. I got a call saying that I was someone's emergency contact. I never got a name," I told her. She started typing on her computer and I exchanged glances with Eddie. She smiled and nodded.
"Yes, you are. Room 914," she said. I thanked her before Eddie and I headed towards the elevator. The music played softly throughout the moving box as Eddie and I stood there in awkward silence.
"Do you want me to wait in the hall?" he asked. I shrugged.
"Depends on who it is. But you can do whatever you want. I don't even know why Singh sent you. I get around just fine." Eddie nodded and I sent him a small smile. "How are you and Iris?"
"Good. You and Barry?" I nodded.
"Good." The elevator dinged and the doors opened. I walked down the hall until I found room 914. A doctor waited next to the door and smiled at me once he noticed me.
"Detective Parker?" I nodded. "Follow me." I followed him into the room. The curtain was shielding my view from the person so I focused on the doctor. "This man has been in a coma for a little more than a year. He just woke up." I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion.
"How did he get in a coma?"
"Same way as you: struck by lightning." My eyes widened. "As you know the metahuman activity is high in this city so we ran some tests on him because it was the night of the Particle Accelerator. He's not a metahuman so you should be good." I chuckled.
"Doctor, you have no idea how much experience I have with metahumans. I'm on the task force for the CCPD. Now, who is this man? I don't remember being anyone's emergency contact that's still alive or in Central City." He pulled back the curtain and I looked from the doctor to the man in the bed watching TV. I stumbled back, catching myself with the other bed in the room. My throat was dry and my heart was racing, as was my mind. How the hell is he alive? He died that night.
"Clarity, is everything okay?" I heard Eddie ask.
"Eddie," I said, my voice cracking. "Call Barry and Joe." He nodded and got out his phone. I walked towards the man in the bed. He turned to look at me and he grinned.
"Clarity," he said.
"William," I whispered, slowly advancing towards him.
"I don't know. She said to call you guys. We're at the hospital. Room 914," I heard Eddie say into the phone.
"H-how? You died," I said. I looked to the doctor. "How is this him? I was told he died."
"Apparently he had no identification on him that night. He was a John Doe."
"DNA tests! There are such things as DNA tests! Dental records!" I yelled. "Fingerprinting! There is always a way to identify someone, even if they were dead!" I heard footsteps in the hallway and a familiar voice.
"Eddie, what's going on? Why is she yelling?" Barry asked. Barry must've sped him and Joe here. Barry shoved his way through the doorway. I looked to Barry before looking to Will who was shocked at my sudden outburst.
"Please calm down, Detective," the Doctor said. I focused my gaze on Barry.
"Clarity, what's going on? Who is this?" Barry inquired.
"Clarity, who is this?" I heard Will ask.
"Will, this is, um, this is my boyfriend. Barry," I managed to say. Barry's eyes widened.
"Will? As in your dead fiancé?" I nodded. Will scowled.
"Boyfriend?" he asked.
"Will, I thought you were dead. They told me you were dead." I pushed back the tears. Everything was too overwhelming. "I had to move on after I woke up from my coma. You have to understand, I lost everything. I applied to CCPD for forensics and I met Barry. You remember me talking about Barry, don't you? The kid I was bestfriends with?" He nodded.
"Yeah. He's also the kid you were in love with." I ran a hand through my hair. "Why is he here? Why are you dating him?"
"Because you were dead! You died that night. I lost everything, Will! I lost you, I lost our baby! Kat was in Starling with Nick and I didn't have my sister at the time!" I exclaimed.
"Your sister? As in Holly?" I nodded. "She's alive?" I nodded again. Will looked to the doctor. "When can I go home?"
"Now. You're in perfect shape." I looked to Barry with a panicked look in my eyes. Barry pulled me out into the hall.
"What am I going to do? I don't have space for Will. Holly took up the guest bedroom," I said.
"Linda." I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion. "His sister. He can stay with her. She works with Iris. I could get into contact with her easily."
"Wait. Linda. Why didn't they call the sister first? Why call me? Why would it even go to CCPD instead of me?" Barry sighed.
"When you got a new phone, you got a new number. Remember?" I remembered perfectly. I was out on a call with Joe and the scumbag broke my phone. I lost everything on it. "When your information was updated they probably forgot to change the number from the CCPD's to yours." I shook my head. "Why aren't you happy? He's alive."
"We were engaged, Barry. Did you see the hurt in his eyes when I told him who you are?" I whispered so that Will couldn't hear. "Barry, I have to keep my other life a secret from him. Our other life. How do you think this will affect him? He was in a coma for more than a year and he wakes up to his fiancée with another guy, his child dead, his dog dead, and three detectives and a forensic scientist surrounding him. He also only has his sister's place to go. Do you see how much it's affecting his life?" Barry nodded in agreement. He took my face in his hands.
"I do see where you're going with this. I'm going to ask you a question and you have to answer it honestly no matter how much it could hurt us." I knew what he was going to ask. I shook my head.
"Please don't ask it. You know the answer, Barry. I've already proven it to you."
"Do you love him or me? Who do you love more?"
"Barry, I've loved you since before I even knew what the word love truly meant. Even when you were so strung up on Iris, I still allowed myself to love you. The fact that you have to ask that question hurts me," I said softly. Barry nodded.
"Clarity?" I turned around and saw Will in normal clothes. He was ready to go. Eddie stood behind him. "What's going on?"
"Eddie? Could you get ahold of Iris for me, please?" Eddie nodded and walked down the hall to call his girlfriend. I walked over to Will.
"Will, um, Linda is still in Central City. We're going to see if you can stay with her." He nodded.
"And I can't stay with you because of Barry," he said, finishing my thought.
"Holly actually took the guest room." It wasn't a lie. She did. And we still had the couch. But it would've been too overwhelming for all three of us. I turned to Barry. "Go back to STAR Labs. My phone was vibrating a lot. I think they have a lead on Brie. Okay?" He nodded and walked down the hall. Once he turned the corner I felt the slight breeze of him speeding off since he couldn't do it in front of Will. I smiled at Will.
"Why don't we go get some coffee?" I suggested. He nodded, eyeing my hand. I looked down at it and still saw the slight tan line from where my engagement ring was.
