8. Day 2 (Part 1)
NBR: Hi and welcome! My questions are as follows:
1. I'm partial to dialogue in a story but it tends to be tricky to write. Was the dialogue in this chapter realistic? Was there too much of it or too little? Any improvements you'd like to suggest on this aspect?
2. This is one of the many instances where Kyle infuriates Emily without meaning to do so. I was a little uncertain about her reaction though. Was it too much or or was it justified?
3. I didn't dwell much on descriptions here. Is there any way I can improve on "setting the scene" or would that be too much unnecessary detail?

I was late. Again. Hanging out with Kyle and then obsessing over how embarrassed I was when we parted was probably not a great idea for someone with a 9 o'clock appointment on a Saturday. I couldn't find my phone. I assumed that I had left it in Kyle's car and I had no other way of contacting him so I had to hope he would bring it back to me.
I finally left my apartment ten minutes before 9 and sped through the streets. I noticed Kyle's car in the café parking lot so I parked hastily and ran in, hoping to find him and retrieve my phone.
"Thank goodness!" I exclaimed when I spotted him at the counter. "Please tell me you have my phone. I think I left it in your car last night."
"Good morning to you too Beautiful," he smirked, humor dancing in his eyes. "I was about to come look for you. I called the office and they told me you don't work on Saturdays but you had an appointment today." He handed me my phone and a to-go cup of my favorite tea.
"Thank you so much! I can't stay, I'm running late." I had already turned and started walking back to the door when he handed me my phone.
"I'll call you!" Kyle yelled as I flew out the door. I got into my car and high-tailed it to the Garrison property that I was showing to two nuns looking for a place to house homeless orphans on behalf of their church.
I made it just in time as the nuns got out of the church minivan that they had driven there.
"Sister Florence, Sister Viola. How are you today?" I asked the two women.
"Very good my child. Thank you and how are you?" Sister Florence, the elder of the two replied. She was short and stout with caramel colored skin lined with wrinkles. In spite of this, her face maintained its youthful beauty. She smiled kindly at me and her hazel eyes crinkled at the corners.
"I'm good, thank you. I hope you didn't have trouble getting here," I said fidgeting with the folder in my arms and my phone.
"No, not at all! The directions you sent over to us were very precise and easy to follow," Sister Viola replied. She was short, petite and very sprightly and looked to be around my age. Her wide sapphire blue eyes were filled with a contagious excitement and energy that I felt like doing cartwheels just from looking into them. She waved one of her hands about whenever she spoke but the other was fixed on the silver crucifix of the Rosary she wore on her neck.
"Then I'm glad," I smiled at her. "Shall we?"
I led the way up the stairs leading to the door of the massive brick structure building. The brick-red, double storey structure stretched for half an acre across and was still in good condition. We did a general tour of the building and the highly excitable Sister Viola clapped and marveled at everything whilst Sister Florence nodded and smiled at my every word.
"The property is well within the price range you asked for and it's in a very convenient location; within walking distance of the school so it will be easy for the children to..."
'Let's talk about sex baby. Let's talk about you and me. Let's talk about all the good things and the bad things that may be. Let's talk about it. Let's talk about sex..."
I stared at the ringing phone in my hand like it had grown teeth. The phone had interrupted me but I was too dumbstruck by the ridiculous ringing tone to answer it. I finally snapped out of my shocked state and tapped the answer button.
"Hello."
"Hi Beautiful. How do you like your new ringtone?" Kyle asked laughing.
"You. You put that on my phone?" I wished I could reach through the phone and strangle him.
"Yep, you like?"
"What the hell Kyle?" I yelled. A sharp intake of breath made me look up.
Sister Florence. I'd forgotten they were there.
"Shit, I'm so sorry Sister...Crap, I didn't mean to say shit. Or crap. And I've said them again. I'm sorry," I rambled.
She eyed me reproachfully and did the sign of the cross whilst Sister Viola clamped her hand over her mouth in an attempt to cover her giggles. My cheeks flamed red and I mumbled hastily to Kyle that I would call him back then switched off my phone.
"I am so sorry. Someone changed my ringtone and put that song," I tried to explain.
"No need to explain to us. It's your phone after all," Sister Florence said primly. "Thank you for showing us the house. We'll be sending someone to deal with the paper work on Monday, if that's okay."
"Of course. That will be great," I said, forcing a smile even though I was dying of embarrassment inside. We walked out and I locked up while they went over to their car. Sister Viola walked over to me when I reached my car and gave me a hug.
"Don't worry about Sister Flo. She'll soon forget and I promise I saw a hint of a smile on her face when your phone started ringing. Your face was comical," she said with a light laugh.
"Sister Florence smiled?" I asked in disbelief.
Sister Viola nodded and whispered dramatically behind her hand. "I think the song was her lady jam back in the 90's, you know, before she became a nun."
I burst out laughing, feeling a little better and she gave me another hug before going back to their car and driving off. I left the property feeling slightly less mortified. I switched on my phone, dialed Kyle's number and placed it on speaker.
"Hey Be..."
I cut into his sentence. "Are you still at the café?"
"Uhh yeah. Is everything okay?" he asked, taken aback by my curtness.
"I'll meet you there in five," I said and hung up before he could say anything else.
When I got to the café,, Kyle was waiting for me in the parking lot. I parked next to his car and he opened my door for me.
"Hey. Is everything okay? You sounded weird on the phone," he said looking worried.
"I have never been more humiliated in my life than I was today. What the hell were you thinking?" I asked, hand on my hip.
Kyle just stared at me confused with deep lines marring his forehead.
"Do you know what client I had today?" I paused and he shrugged which made me want to pelt him in the face with tomatoes or something. "Nuns, Kyle. I was with two nuns. Imagine their faces when my phone started ringing and that song started playing."
Kyle looked at me in silence for a few seconds and then he started laughing. He actually started laughing. I felt my anger spread through my entire being and I clenched my fists at my side.
"I'm glad you find humor in my embarrassment," I bit out and turned back to my car. He grabbed my arm and I lost it.
"Don't touch me!" I snapped at him and he dropped my arm like it had burned him.
"I'm sorry Beautiful. I didn't mean to upset you. It was honestly just a joke," he apologized.
"Don't call me that either. You messed with my job again."
"Don't you think you're over-reacting a bit here. I'm sure the nuns had a good laugh about it so you're stressing over nothing," Kyle said.
Wow.
I turned away from him without saying a word and climbed back into my car.
"The seven day deal is off. I'm done with you," I said then shut my door and drove away, leaving him staring after me.
