Chapter 9

I don't need saving all the time!
Keep telling yourself that, little sis. You might actually believe it one day.
I am older. Idiot.

{Echo}

Working was bloody hard, but at least I wasn't working alone.

After serving two more already drunk dudes their beers, I want and sat at the bar keep, where Felix was working.

«Hey beautiful.» he smiled.

«Hey handsome.»I laughed.

«What happened?»

«If I hear one more drunk guy complaining about his life, I swear I will burn this place to the ground...» I sighed. Felix laughed, probably because he didn't know I could actually do what I said.

«It's not that bad. At least you get to sit a bit.» he replied.

«You have no idea what I would give to be on my feet all night instead of doing what I am doing now.»

«Where is that bloody waitress?» someone yelled. I groaned and rolled my eyes.

«Duty calls...» I told Felix (who laughed harder), got up and faked a sweet smile, while in my head I was silently murdering everyone in the room.

«What can I get you, si--» I started but froze as I saw who it was. «You.» I told him. It was the guy that had stolen the necklace. I turned my head and looked at Felix, quite possibly with a terrified look on my face, because he looked at me confused. «What the hell are you doing here?» I asked trying to keep my cool.

«Visiting.»

«Go away, now. I don't have time for bloodthirsty idiots.» I told him and turned to walk away. He got up.

I turned around and kicked him where it hurts, then ran to Felix.

«It's him we have to go.» I told him and he jumped over the bar. We started heading towards the stairs, when the bloodthirsty idiot sneaked up from behind us.

Felix punched him in the face, but it didn't do any good.

«What the hell? Are you a robot or something?» he asked shaking his hand. The other dude grabbed Felix by the collar and threw him at the bar. The little customers that were in the restaurant started running out I in panic, while the hostel owner came out of the kitchen yelling.

«Felix!» I yelled panicking. He got up a bit shakily.

«I'm fine. Go get the others!» he told me.

«I am not leaving you here!» I replied. The soldier came closer, taking a knife off his belt. I panicked even more. I tried to reach for the small dagger hidden in my boot, but it would be too obvious. That's when Felix came up from behind him and shattered a bottle of beer on the attacker's head. The guy barely budged. The strike only seemed to make him madder. He turned around to punch Felix in the face, but he ducked just in time. He immediately got back on his feet, but the other guy punched him in the gut.

What the hell were we doing? We were just two teenagers fighting a goddamn trained soldier!

«I'm surprised you haven't torched me yet.» he laughed. I looked at him shocked. «He doesn't know, does he?» I was frozen. He took advantage of that by punching me in the stomach.

«Leave her alone!» Felix growled. Even though I was moved by his reaction (and even though it was cheesy...), it was useless if he got beaten to death. The soldier kicked him.

«Amon that's enough.» a woman with long black hair and dark gray eyes said from behind us.

«Y-your highness?» the idiot, whose name was apparently Amon, stammered.

«Yes. Get the hell out of here. You have other work to do.» the woman replied.

«Wait... "your highness"?! You are the queen?» I asked surprised.

«We need to talk, where are the others?» she questioned. Felix and I glanced each other nervously. «Look, kids, I don't have all day. I have a ball to plan, and if you don't mind, I just saved your butts, so help me out a bit here.»

We both started going upstairs and she followed. For a queen she seemed pretty young.

«How long has she been Queen?» I whispered at Felix.

«Five years or so...» he whispered in reply and I nodded. We arrived at the room and knocked the door.

A very tired-looking Celine opened, and my sleeping brother was easy to see behind her.

«You're back early- who's that?» she yawned.

«Deidre, nice to meet you.» the Queen smiled and walked inside.

«Is that..?» Celine mouthed and I nodded in reply as I walked in with her cousin.

«Oliver, you idiot, wake up; we have a guest!» I said throwing a pillow at his face. He woke up gasping and was about to start cursing, when he saw the Queen.

«Deidre, nice to meet you.» she repeated.

«How..?» he stuttered.

«Please, I am the Queen. If I want someone found, I find them. Even though the four of you have been an extremely hard case...» she muttered the last part. The rest of us were speechless.

«Why did you kill my parents?» Celine asked.

«That's the point, I didn't. Amon did it. His orders were to find you and get you to the palace safely, but he is getting out of hand.»

«You are supposed to be the Queen, it's your job to keep people under control!» Celine yelled.

«That's not why I'm here, and if I wasn't, Amon would have killed you all, okay?» Deidre's ability to stay calm was scary. «Look, I am just trying to help. That's why I have been after you the whole time, I know how to recharge your necklace. I have it at the palace. Just think about it and come, I am having a ball in two weeks and I think that's enough time, okay?» she explained.

«Why should we believe you?» Oliver asked her.

«Because I am your only way home.» she replied and stormed out of the room.

«What the hell was that?» Oliver said after a while. «I just woke up can someone help me process this?»

«We will, once we process it too.» I muttered.

«Okay, this is obviously a trap.» Felix added.

«Really? I hadn't noticed.» Celine replied sarcastically.

«Shut up.» he told her and she glared at him.

«We have two weeks to decide, but I say we go. We were planning on taking on the Queen for a time now. It is our only way back to Earth. It is the same as before, only now we have a deadline and it's a trap.» Oliver interrupted them.

«Guys, I think she was telling the truth.» I opposed. They all looked at me as if I was an alien.

«Are you out of your mind?! You can't be serious right now!» Oliver yelled.

«Don't yell at me! I just don't think it was a trap! Why would she save us from that guy if she wanted to lure us in the palace and kill us herself? She could have done it here! Besides, did you see her face when Celine brought up her parents? She didn't want to talk about it. She doesn't look like the person that would kill others in cold blood.» I justified.

«Are you listening to yourself? You are saying that the Queen hunting us down isn't the villain. Do you have the faintest idea of how that sounds?» Celine asked me furiously.

«If you put it that way it does sound crazy, but--»

«But what? I am not going to say the person responsible for my parents' death is innocent, okay?» she shouted. I looked at my brother so he could help me out, but he just looked down. I swung the bag I had bought on my day off over my shoulder.

«Echo, wait...» was the last thing I heard Oliver say before I stormed out of the room.

I went downstairs and walked out of the hostel.

It was late night and dark. I should have brought a jacket, but I didn't really plan what I was doing. I was furious.

I always backed my brother up, except when I was the one arguing with him, but this time he completely abandoned me. I know that what I was talking about sounded absolutely crazy, but he should have gotten used to it by now. I have been talking crazy since I was a toddler.

I started to think that my brother was drunk in love, but I don't think he was enough to not go home. Even if he didn't want to return anymore, he was too stubborn. He would never admit he was wrong.

I told you he is a sly one.

Dammit, was it freezing that night.

I tried to keep my teeth from chattering, but it was no good. The fact that I was wearing a t-shirt wasn't helping. I thought of lighting my palms on fire, but I couldn't risk being seen.

What the hell was I doing? I couldn't run away from Ollie, no matter how tempting he made it. He is my family (okay, now I sound like a tumblr post...).

I stopped and looked over my shoulder.

I wasn't one to seek attention, but I have to say, I was disappointed he didn't care I left. But that was Oliver. He keeps saying I bottle my emotions up, but he isn't any better.

If my brother didn't support me over something so unimportant, what would he do if he found out about my powers? I mean, I know I have been trying to tell him, but I knew it would do no good. Now, whatever I told him he would believe. He would accuse me of killing dad too and he would be right.

I sighed and ran my hand through my hair, then looked behind again.

This time, the road wasn't empty. Felix was running my way.

«What do you want?» I asked him.

«I was just checking on you.» he replied looking offended.

«I don't need help all the time.» I told him coldly.

«That's not what I meant.»

«Oh, please. I have heard Celine; I am a trouble magnet.»

«I don't think so.»

«Really? This has proved itself multiple times. Are you sure that's why you're here?»I questioned suspiciously. He paused for a brief moment.

«Okay, no. Your brother is sorry.»

«Why didn't he come himself?»

«I wouldn't let him, because I knew you would start yelling and, eventually, injure him.» he flashed a goofy smile. I tried to resist smiling back.

«I will take that as a compliment.»

«Have I ever told you anything that isn't  a compliment?» he smirked. Thank god for the dark, or he would have seen how red I was.

«Shut up.» I muttered and punched him gently on the shoulder. He chuckled.

«Come on, let's go back...» he said and started walking back to the hostel.

«I am only doing this because I am freezing.» I replied and followed him. He laughed again. «What? It's bloody cold out here!»

«You're funny when you're complaining.»

«Idiot.»we both laughed and we kept walking.

The most surprising thing, though, was the fact that Felix didn't ask about what Amon meant when he mentioned my "torching"  him.

The moment we walked in the room, I wrapped myself around a blanket.

«I'm going to have a shower.» Celine said and went to the bathroom. I glared at my brother.

«I'm going to sleep.» I added and lied down on the bed, covering my face with the blanket. I didn't even bothered to change out of my clothes; I was exhausted and disappointed and just wanted that bloody day to end.

Little did I know that worse days were to come... Not soon, but they did.

That necklace was the best and worst thing that ever happened to me.
