Chapter 55: Allies
A new twilight has descended upon the land of the dead but the day has finally come for the living to return to their rightful place. Now is the time for them to fight so that they can return home.
After days of traveling and fighting with their every breath Ruby, Dyrroth, Hela, and Hrod can finally stand against Anput and her cronies. They retrieved the relic from Fenrir's temple after Sigfried carried them on his back. With the dragon shifter, they can now move faster through Helheim's terrain.
Surprisingly, it was a relic from Ragnarok. Hela told them that the relic was the hand of the War God Tyr, the one who took care of Fenrir when he was a pup and the only God brave enough to accept Fenrir's challenge. Fenrir ate his hand when the gods bound him with Gleipnir and he regurgitated it once he was freed from his chains. It had been degraded into a small catalyst crystal that could be used for casting spells. Aside from its divine nature, it had also been mixed with Fenrir's chaos making it a rare and powerful relic. All of them agreed that Hela should be the one to use it. She has the blood of giants and the only full-blooded divine so she was the most obvious choice.
Meanwhile, Grandma Ress and Grandpa Oz promised that they would gather fighters for Hela's day of reckoning. Regn had to leave them so he could help Ruby's grandparents convince the Svartalf (dark elves) to join the fight. Hela soon plans to storm the castle and take back her throne and husband from the ambitious Anput. She would spare no one in her wrath to protect her realm and to have her husband back to her side.
Ruby's grandparents already sent ravens confirming that warriors loyal to Hela had already gathered at the location she told them to. Now they are only waiting for her command before they launch an attack. They knew that if war broke out some of them would not be able to resurrect once more. There would be nothing after death but they still chose to fight for their home and for the goddess who accepted them.
"Are you ready?" Dyrroth asked Ruby who was strapping the buckles of her leather armor. The blonde faced her partner and smiled at him.
"Yes, I'm ready to fight for Queen Hela and I'm ready to fight for my grandparents. I already failed them before, I won't let them die again." Ruby replied summoning her sickle. "I'm also fighting so that I can save you. You've always been the one to protect me in the Abyss now is my time to shine."
Dyrroth released a delightful chuckle feeling elated by her love. It seems only yesterday when she was trying to smother him with a pillow in his sleep. "Your words are really touching, my darling. But, you don't have to worry too much because now I'm here with you. This time we'll do it together and we're going to do great." Dyrroth reassured.
"Are you... Trying to be encouraging?" Ruby squinted at him as if he was a stranger.
"I do this to my troops but for you, it's a little bit sweeter. I can't believe that our first war will be waged here in the land of the dead."
"Sorca told me once that your way of encouraging your troops ended up with some of them fainting." Ruby laughed making him soften.
"I mean, if you want to I can also try to make you faint if that's what you want." Dyrroth smiled at her suggestively making her roll her eyes and slap his arm.
"Focus, Dyrroth! We can flirt later once we're back to the land of the living."
"I'll hold onto that promise."
"Mom, I can't wait for you to see the city! It's filled with many mansions and beautiful ice sculptures. Once we win, I hope we can get a look around where I grew up." Hrod exclaimed cheerfully rushing into her arms. The young wolf had regained his human form but it was just a child version of his adult self. He looked adorable though.
"You grew up here?" Dyrroth asked.
"Yeah, since father got imprisoned, Auntie had to raise us herself. We lived in her palace but it was always so cold and lonely. So, Skoll and I used to sneak out and play with the dead people. They're pretty chill. Things got better when Auntie married Anubis. He's an amazing God! And powerful too. He taught us a lot of things. I... I really miss him." Ruby saw his downcast expression and went to hug him. She made sure to reassure him that everything will be okay and that they'll win no matter what. Hrod slightly perked up after that and went away to pester the dragon-shifter instead.
Dyrroth felt a strange feeling inside his chest as he watched Ruby become so motherly to the little wolf. He began imagining that Hrod was their child and Ruby was the dotting mother. It was a wonderful idea that made him feel giddy. He wonders how long it will take before a little one comes along. His thoughts were suddenly interrupted when a ship, a little row boat came flying from the air before crashing against the temple roof.
"Hey, what was that?" Ruby yelled in surprise.
"It might be an enemy. Get your weapon." Dyrroth warned running towards the crash sight with Ruby following closely.
"Who are you? Reveal yourself." snarled Hela holding her staff at the ready.
The five of them gathered around the rubble where the rowboat landed. The dust and debris created a thick cloud that blocked their vision. Dyrroth's keen eyes detected movement first and saw something leap from the debris. A woman emerged with short dark hair and ears like a cat. She stretched her arms out like a feline and then pounced on Hela.
"Hela, I missed you!" exclaimed the person.
"Of all the people I have the displeasure of seeing today it had to be you." Hela groaned in annoyance trying to pry the cat woman away from her. "Get off me you smelly feline!"
"Hey, I took a bath in the River Nile some time ago. I'm not that smelly." defended the cat woman.
Ruby and Dyrroth lowered their weapons and stared at the female more closely. Soon enough they were surprised to see that she looked just like Ruby and Hela.
"No way! The Ruby multiverse is expanding! Now there's a Red Ruby, a goth goddess Ruby, and a Cat Ruby! My fantasies are coming true." mumbled Dyrroth to himself.
Ruby looked at him weirdly as if he was dirt and slapped his arm. She cleared her throat and addressed the newcomer. "Hello there, miss. I see that you're a friend of the goddess. May we know your name?"
"Oh, hello to you too, red lady. I am Baset, the Goddess of Cats. Wepwawet sent me here to help out our poor darling Anubis. As a cat, it is my duty to protect you weak humans and help my vulnerable friends, Anpu and Helly." introduced the goddess. Baset was rather cheerful and energetic like a ray of sunshine. She is the total opposite of Hela's icy and reserved behavior. Even their favorite animals are sworn enemies. Cats are the enemies of dogs, serpents, and ravens all of which Hela adores and considers as her familiars.
"I see. Then thank you for your generosity." Ruby smiled as she shook hands with the cat goddess.
"It's no bother. Anubis is such a great friend. I like him plus Hela is practically my best friend so I am pumped to help out. But before that, you look just like me! Are you a descendant of mine? I did flirt with mortals back in the day." questioned the goddess looking at her from different angles.
"I dunno," Ruby answered awkwardly.
"My husband and I have a son, Maahes. He is a lion war god and he did interact a lot with humans being a war god. Maybe your maternal ancestor descended from his line which would make you kind of like my granddaughter! Oh, this is so exciting! I have a grandchild I didn't know about! Yes, I can clearly smell it now. Your blood is from my lineage." Baset exclaimed excitedly, hugging Ruby. Hela scoffed at her in annoyance muttering insults under her breath.
Dyrroth carefully approached them and beamed at the goddess. "Wow, your husband must be an amazing god seeing how well taken care of you seem to be. Can we see a portrait of him or something?"
"Oh, sure. I always carry his portrait in papyrus with me. Here have a look." The goddess handed him the papyrus and Dyrroth opened it excitedly knowing that the portrait would look like him.
"WHATTTTTT!!!" To his utter shock and horror, he saw Martis' face staring back at him. He was decorated in jewelry similar to Anubis and there were hieroglyphs drawn on the paper that read 'To my lovely wife whom the world was blessed to have. - Ptah'
(Ptah: pronounced as Ta)
"Is something wrong?" asked the goddess in confusion.
"Why... Why does your husband look like a certain someone that I know?"
"Maybe he is a descendant?" suggested Baset. "My husband also worked closely with humans so maybe a few were blessed with his seeds. You see, Ptah is the god of architecture, craftsmanship, and sometimes even the magma."
"That doesn't make you angry? Anubis is loyal to Hela."
"Well, polyamory is a common practice among gods. We do not abide by the rules of mortals. Even I have my own escapades and my husband does not mind. Our relationship is healthy and happy."
"But...but... Does this mean that Martis is going to be my rival?"
"You mean your husband-in-law?" teased Hrod. The little wolf snickered when the suggestion affected the demon prince who looked like he was hit by a raging bull.
"Husband-in-law? Is he now my brother because we share the same wife? Is he my husband now too? What the hell is anything anymore?!!" The demon screamed in frustration.
"Wow, that certainly broke his brain," commented Ruby as she watched the demon processing the information in despair. Hrod laughed harder.
"MY QUEEN!!!" Another figure erupted from the rubble startling everyone. This woman was blue-skinned with long curved horns, deep red eyes, and hair of silver moonlight. She is dressed in a battle attire fit for an important underworld goddess although it is slightly tattered in some places. There was a wild look on her face, as if she just came from a battle but she knelt before Hela like a subservient servant. The woman is the goddess Modgud the guardian of the gates of Helheim. All who cross the golden bridge meet her before entering the realm of the dead.
"I am deeply sorry for my incompetence to stop those who tried to enter our gates. I lost in battle and the enemy was able to cross the threshold of your realm. I deserve to be beheaded! But before that, I must deliver a final message."
"What news do you bring, Modgud?" asked Hela, her brows creased with worry.
"Half... Half the realm has already vanished taking with them many of our people." she declared, her blue lips trembling.
A look of pure horror flickered across Hela's face. She was stiff with dread as if rigor mortise had seized her body. As quickly as it came, she relinquished it putting up a mask of composure. "If that is true then we don't have much time. We need to act now or we'll all fall to the yawning void."
"Yup, we only have to worry about that. We're already one step forward with Anubis because I already stole the Coptic jars containing his organs." Baset announced holding up four jars with sculpted animal heads. Everyone was surprised to see this, especially Hela.
"How did you get this?"
"I'm glad you asked! Anubis' temple was heavily guarded but I sneaked in undetected with my feline grace and stole them. I gave them a good whiff and confirmed that they are Anubis' organs. And I also picked up your minion along the way. She was badly beaten looking all blue and all that stuff so I helped her out." said the feline goddess proudly.
"That's so cool! The goddess of cats is so reliable!" Ruby cheered. The two of them clapped hands like the best of friends.
"Now the only thing we need to do is reverse the ritual and sacrifice four relics to undo the spell Anput cast. The only problem is, what relics can we sacrifice and how to keep Anubis at bay?" Baset's tail flickered side to side while in thought.
"I'll deal with how to handle him but for now let's think about the Artifacts we can offer. I have many Artifacts we can use in the palace but they are in a secured vault. It would be harder to get them so we need to improvise. I still have my dagger, besides that, we'll need more. Does any of you have any strong artifacts capable of changing fate?" Hela asked.
"I have the vitality of Jörmungandr stored in my necklace and I'm willing to use it for Lord Anubis." Ruby declared confidently.
"You are a good person so I should tell this to you now since this is not your battle to fight. You can leave now. Take Hrod back, I'll deal with everything here. The Snake Vitality has enough power to take all of you out of here. Including Dyrroth." Hela announced.
"But I want to help you! Your home was taken from you, your husband was taken from you, your family betrayed you and you obviously need help so I'm helping you. No questions, no hesitations." Ruby replied with determination.
"Would you willingly help the person who had already killed you once? The daughter of the man who ruined your life?" Hela laughed with no humor. It sounded sad and full of bitterness making her feel confused.
"What?"
"I already killed you once. Your mother miscarried you. She was poisoned by my father and you died in her womb but she didn't know about your death. I took your soul from her womb and brought you here and I was bitter about it. Anubis took care of you while you were here and he even named you Nefer, "The beautiful one". I cannot bear children for him so he made himself believe that you are our child. He loved you like his own... You are precious to him and precious to my brother even though I cannot understand it." Hela revealed leaving everyone flummoxed.
Dyrroth held Ruby in his arms as the girl processed the information. "But... If I already died then... How come I grew up in the mortal world?"
"You were resurrected because Fenrir made a trade with me; the same one he offered me for your husband's soul. For you, he bartered seeds of Yggdrasil."
"The seeds of the world tree? Wasn't it destroyed?" Hrod asked, bewildered. Hela nodded and explained how Fenrir sacrificed certain body parts in exchange for acquiring the seeds.
"Imagine, he could have created a new universe- a world of his own with those seeds but he traded them for you, a human. So you see, you are incredibly valuable. You must leave. Go back to your realm and remain safe. That is the last thing I do for you, the child of my husband and the incarnation of my brother."
"What...? Now I have even more reason to help out! I can't believe that I was dead. Also... You didn't kill me you only did your job but before any of that... You knew my mom!?"
"Ah, yes. She stayed here a while back. She was poisoned by a basilisk and I collected her soul although she was only at the edge of death. Your father did everything he could to bring her back to life and Loki helped too, I guess. She was a delightful woman and I liked her. She didn't stay long though." Hela has a forlorn smile on her lips remembering the fond memories.
"You knew who my parents were?"
"Althreya Stormborn and Gilgamesh of the Golden Sand. Your mother is a duchess and your father was a former king of a city state in the desert land. His country fell but now I heard that he is a wealthy banker with multiple businesses under his name. They are both alive and well and you can visit them, and be reunited with them. You have so much to live for."
"You sound like you don't believe that we can actually succeed... Why? Why are you pushing me away?" Ruby asked.
"Because you are also my child," Hela whispered, looking away. "Adopted child, yes but Anubis took care of you here and Fenrir raised you in the mortal world. You are the legacy of the only people I love. I don't want you to die and disappear if I fail. I am left powerless, I have no formidable army, and currently, I've already failed. I already failed when Anput took my husband, I already failed when they kicked me out of my palace, I already failed when they hurt my friends, and I already failed when they sent my people to oblivion. You, Dyrroth, and Hrod are the only ones I can protect right now so leave and be safe. You've already helped enough. This fight is mine alone."
"And mine. I won't leave Hela and Anubis but you mortals should go especially you, granddaughter. It's not good for living creatures to stay long in the underworld or it might try to keep you. You've gotten Hela this far. It's time for us gods to clean up our own mess." Baset reasoned.
"Queen Hela, you said this fight is yours alone but what about them? They seem to have come for you." Dyrroth pointed out gesturing to the figures appearing from the forest. From the west, elves with dark skin and silver hair emerged bearing their swords and bows and arrows. From the south, dwarves carried their axes and hammers, their fine armor clinking soundly. Among them are humans, farmers, and fishermen but fighters nonetheless led by Restina and Oscar. From the east came the huldra, fossegrim, and trolls with their charms and spells. To the west, came the giants with their strength and magic. Slowly, more and more people emerged from the forest: creatures of all sizes and shapes, from all over the Nine realms, creatures that the goddess accepted into her realm all came to her rescue.
Hela looked at them one by one, her cold heart stirring with hope and inspiration. Restina stepped forward. "My goddess, we bring you your army. All sworn to fight for you."
"Thank you. You have done well," replied Hela.
"So you see, child. It seems that I no longer need you." She told Ruby with a smile filled with hope.
