Who Am I

Beep. Beep...Beeeeeep.

"Just 5 more minutes...", I muttered as I slowly opened my eyes to burning daylight outside my window.

That alarm was way too loud...ugh. Could I go back to sleep please?

Whomever opened those curtains would pay.

I would have taken a nap then, but then I felt unusually warm probably caused by the direct heat that peered in through the glass.

Picking up the pillow and turning it over, I pleaded, "I'll do anything...give me a bit more time and...then I'll wake up. I promise."

My head started throbbing at that moment and I placed my hands on my forehead only to jerk awake after seeing them. I looked at my hands, but barely recognized them as they appeared alien to me, all wrapped up in bandages.

Had I gotten scratches or hurt myself? What other reason would there be for bandages on my arms?

Seeing that my arms hurt slightly when I pressed on the wraps, I decided that I must have at least bruised myself at some point in the near past.

I tried to jump out of the bed, but found a needle attached to my arm.

Noticing my surroundings for the first time, it dawned on me that for the lack of decor this little white room had, only a dark TV provided relief from the stark brightness.

Was I at a hospital? What reason could I have to be here?

Oh God. What was my name? Why couldn't I remember? Was I in an ACCIDENT?

I heard a sound outside in the hallway so in my startled state, I turned over and pretended to sleep by laying my head down.

The door squeaked open and I heard the sound of a person's footsteps come towards the bed. My curiosity finally won out over my insistence to have a few more winks of sleep. Lifting to an upright position, I observed that a nurse had come in with a polite smile on her face. In my state, I stared at her for a few seconds until finding the right words to say.

"WHO AM I? TELL ME. Please. I have no idea where I am or who I am. And this must be a hospital, I assume its a hospital. And you must have a chart with my name on it right? Was I in an accident? Is that why I forgot?", I shouted.

After my rant was over, I wheezed out of breath and saw the nurse continue to smile at me with a curious look in her eyes. Why was she just standing there doing nothing? Was this funny to her? At this moment, I wanted answers. Random people do not just end up in a hospital for no reason at all.

If this nurse would keep silent for any longer, I would go nuts. I needed answers to my questions and if she was not going to give them to me, I would find someone who will.

Standing up, my feet swayed as I tried to gain a bearing on the floor and found myself almost sprawled on the floor after a misstep. That caused me to see things in a different perspective because that's when I realized the signs in the room were not in English.

And who I was seemed to be the very least of my problems.
