chapter thirty
san wooyoung
25.08.17
in the week since wooyoung had been the centre of unaddressed tension at yeosang's house, he and hongjoong have been on a total of three more dates.
that might seem like a lot - 43% of his waking hours in seven days, to be specific - but hongjoong had been insistent on getting to know him better. the older hasn't said anything, but wooyoung's able to digress it has something to do with what san had said to him.
for whatever reason, hongjoong clearly feels uneasy not knowing things about wooyoung that san does. and so he has been doing his best to change that on those three days in his ever inquisitively chatty manor.
wooyoung doesn't really mind. he likes hongjoong a lot, nor does it bother him to be the one listening most of the time. the upbeat male can carry on upon a whim for minutes on end, and wooyoung just simply smiles and nods from time to time. it works.
on the second date, hongjoong had held his hand. the action had momentarily surprised the younger, but he had assured the boy it was totally okay when he had proceeded to apologize nonsensically.
there are aspects of this new relationship that wooyoung does not like, of course, but he feels too guilty to admit them. he can't blame hongjoong for not always knowing what to do in certain situations- for trying to help him even when he doesn't need help.
being blind is obviously guaranteed to bring obstacles into any relationship wooyoung has, but he just wishes hongjoong wouldn't walk around the subject on eggshells. that he wouldn't treat it as a thing- a thing that prevents them from normality.
something san never does. san understands that part of him better than anyone else, which makes things easy with him. wooyoung hates that, more than anything. hates the way san knows how he'll react to each touch and kiss, how he knows exactly how to make him tick. okay, maybe hongjoong's insecurities make sense.
but they're friends now. just friends. so he figures he's allowed to acknowledge it. at least with hongjoong, wooyoung feels validated and important. hongjoong is very clear about what he wants, and seems to be a huge fan of labels.
so it's not hard for wooyoung to tell his parents about his new 'boyfriend', whereas he hadn't even known what to introduce san as.
wooyoung ponders this with silent satisfaction, tapping his fingers on the marble counter. cool beneath his skin, it brings some relief in the humidity of his house.
"so, about this boyfriend." his mother suddenly says, as if picking up on his thoughts. "your father and i thought you might like to spend some time with him in the summer."
he just nods politely, not mentioning the fact he's already been doing more than enough of that.
"so how would you like to take a trip down to jeju island? just for a few nights."
wooyoung's jaw practically drops, objections rising within him at the prospect of the idea. he isn't at that stage with hongjoong yet, and definitely isn't comfortable with the trip.
"you want to send your seventeen year old son off with his significant other by himself?" he questions disbelievingly.
"well perhaps not just the two of you-" his mother rushes quickly, flustered. "you should bring some friends. definitely bring yeosang- he's familiar with your needs."
yeosang is the first option for wooyoung as well, but he could imagine what would inevitably follow. because yeosang entails seonghwa. and bringing seonghwa always implicates san, too.
almost rejecting too hastily, wooyoung suddenly reconsiders. avoiding san goes against what he's promised himself. it would only prevent them from being able to become proper friends. avoiding the male suggests there are unresolved feelings between them, and there aren't. (well.) shut up.
and so: "y-yeah." he agrees, his palm stilling on the countertop. "that sounds really great, mom."
"oh, good!" she breathes, sounding relieved. "that's really good. your father and i will pay for everything- we just want you to have the best time you can."

which is how wooyoung finds himself getting off of a ferry, duffel bag in hand. the fresh summer breeze of jeju island washes over him, the linger of sea salt in its touch.
he tilts his head to feel the sun on his face, sensing someone else come to stand next to him. unsurprisingly, the company for this excursion had turned out to be none other than yeosang, seonghwa, san, and hongjoong.
"nice shades," his boyfriend's voice comes, commenting on the dark sunglasses adorning his face. hongjoong's arm goes around his shoulders, and wooyoung smiles.
"thanks. they were a gift." he replies, liking the way the glasses hide the glassy blueness of his eyes. they help him blend in, taking away one of the defining aspects of his differences.
"from who?" hongjoong asks, an edge to his voice. why does it matter?
eyes shifting, the blonde hesitates to answer as he hears the wheels of more suitcases nearing them on the gravel. his smile falters, hoping the older won't be jealous where it's unnecessary.
"from me." san's voice cuts in, and he feels hongjoong's arm stiffen.
ignoring him, the shorter releases wooyoung, instead taking the duffel bag from his grip.
"i'll carry your bag." he tells him, kissing him lightly on the cheek. "you can use your cane better that way."
the younger reddens, the handle of the white stick suddenly hot in his hand. crunching footsteps indicate hongjoong is walking away and up to where he assumes is the hotel.
seonghwa coughs awkwardly, and yeosang whistles. "this is going to be an interesting trip."
wooyoung frowns at their amusement, determined to prove that there's no reason for awkwardness nor tension. ah, denial. he angles his head as san's footsteps near him, the taller male's mood painfully evident.
"stop smiling." he mutters, elbowing san gently.
"can't i smile?" san answers, his words betraying a wide grin. "it doesn't make a difference to you, princess. you can't see."
wooyoung scoffs, already walking away, his cane tapping unfamiliarly on the fine stones. thankfully yeosang runs to join him soon after, guiding him wordlessly up the path.
"i'm going to keep smiling," he hears san say to seonghwa a few paces behind them. "i love the sea. i'll smile."
the boys keep whispering nonsense, both in a joyously buoyant sort of mood, and wooyoung nudges yeosang to speed up and get away from them.
his own mood should of been equally bubbly, given the practically free trip and brilliant weather, but hongjoong's reaction brings him down a notch or two. at first, the older had seemed to be an overwhelmingly positive person. always sweet, like it's impossible for anyone to say a bad word about him. it makes wooyoung a little suspicious.
lately, he's been exhibiting emotions less consistent with that demeanor. but wooyoung decides to brush that aside, trusting hongjoong just needs to become more secure with their relationship. security comes with time.
"i've got to admit, i love your parents." yeosang comments contently, leaning on his shoulder. "it's amazing here."
the younger hums in agreement, a little preoccupied. jeju island feels amazing, sure. but sometimes the general vibe isn't enough without the sights that accompany it. it feels a lot more empty to him.
"you and hongjoong all good?" his friend's seemingly random question causes wooyoung to be caught off guard, feigning ignorance of why they wouldn't be.
"yeah?" he replies, eyebrows furrowing. "i'm not sure i could ever fight with him, anyway. he's always sorry about everything before i can get angry with him."
"well you haven't dated long, so you shouldn't really be arguing yet." yeosang says, half-jokingly. "he just looked quite mad when he walked away just now."
wooyoung nods slowly, assuming as much. "it can't be easy for him," he defends. "being my boyfriend. it's a handful of a job."
"don't make me slap you, jung." his friend warns, slowing down. "it's not a job, and you're not a handful. the only reason he's mad is probably something to do with san and the way he looks at you. and the fact you're kind of secretly shagging them both simultaneously."
"i am not." he says, then is quiet for a moment. the blind boy considers this, once again quite literally in the dark. "how does he look at me?"
"like-" yeosang sighs, breaking off as he struggles to form the words. "nevermind. you shouldn't care. but hongjoong's just worried, woo. be good to your boyfriend."
his friend puts emphasis on the last phrase, as if he has to remind him of who his boyfriend is. the indication offends wooyoung, because in his mind, he doesn't need reminding.
"what can i do to assure him he has nothing to worry about?" wooyoung inquires, turning his head expectantly.
"sleep with him." seonghwa's voice cuts in, making the blonde flinch. he doesn't know how much of their conversation has been heard.
wooyoung struggles for a comeback, put off by seonghwa's laugh as he runs, undoubtedly chasing san who's immediately left their company.
the fast paced footsteps are ringing in his ears, nothing else clear to him besides darkness and san leaving in such a rush.
i don't want to, he thinks. and there's no one he wants to confide in more than san.
