Waiting Game
Landon's POV...
This can't be happening. Where's my cell? Damnit! As soon as Levi vomited, he dropped to the floor and began having a seizure. The seizure didn't stop either until the paramedics arrived who knows how many minutes later. Everyone was freaking out, well mostly me. I didn't know what to do, especially when blood started pooling out of Levi's mouth. Derek rushed over and turned Levi onto his side while he was convulsing. "It's probably from him biting down on his tongue," Derek tells me. That didn't make me feel any better.
The paramedics inject something into Levi's leg which stops the seizure momentarily. They said he's breathing on his own and has a pulse, but he looks lifeless to me.
"He has a spinal cord injury," Derek tells the paramedics, so they take extra precautions securing his neck and back before getting him onto the gurney.
They ask us if he's taking any medications and none of us are aware that he is, except for me, and I'm not 100% sure what he's taken. "He might've taken one of these," I hand over one of the pills I found. "I found them while doing laundry the other day, I don't know what they are or if they are even his," I truthfully tell them.
"Thank you. The hospital will be able to figure out what it is, this helps," one of them says to me. I should've told Charlotte what I found last night, maybe this wouldn't have happened today.
Levi's phone had fallen out of his pocket, so I picked it up and used it to call Charlotte. I watch an oxygen mask be placed over Levi's mouth while I listen to the phone ring for the third time. "I thought you said he's breathing?" I quickly ask them. "It's just precautionary," one tells me.
"Levi? I haven't had my blood drawn yet, babe!" I hear Charlotte chuckle and the gut-wrenching guilt I'm feeling makes me want to hurl.
"Charlotte," my voice cracks through the phone and she instantly realizes something's wrong.
"Landon? What's wrong? Where's Levi?"
"Stay at the hospital Charlotte, meet us in the emergency room. We're on our way to you," I manage to say.
"Landon, don't hang up. Is Levi okay?"
"I...I...don't know." I can't stop the tears or feeling like I'm hyperventilating.
Derek grabs the phone from me and tells Charlotte that he's driving me over to the hospital to meet her there. Without getting into details, he tells her that Levi is breathing and he's in the ambulance now.
Derek hands me back the phone and I shove it into my pocket. "Let's go, they need you Landon," Derek says to me while pushing me towards the car.
Derek follows the ambulance and we're at the hospital within ten minutes. Charlotte's outside waiting for them to bring Levi into the emergency room. I rush over to her and wrap my arms around her shaking body.
"Oh my God!," Charlotte cries when she sees Levi's body convulsing on the gurney. "What happened?" She frantically asks. "He was fine this morning before I left."
We hear the paramedics tell the doctor that Levi has been seizing on the ride over and hasn't stopped.
Doctors and nurses wheel him away from us and it takes all my strength to hold Charlotte back. She begins hitting me while she's crying, and I let her.
Derek comes over to us and helps me guide Charlotte into a seat in the waiting area. I keep my arm tightly around her for comfort and just in case she tries to run from me.
"Someone please tell me what's going on."
Before I have a chance to explain, one of the paramedics is at the nursing station talking about a possible overdose. Charlotte's eyes go wide, she looks confused and pissed off at the same time.
"What is he talking about Landon?" I sigh, running my hands through my hair and take another deep breath before explaining what happened.
"After you left this morning, Levi started acting funny. His hands were shaking when he tried to eat and when he tried adjusting his leg brace. I asked him if he was alright, and he brushed it off like it was normal. God, what is wrong with me? I knew the way his hands were shaking it wasn't normal," My fingers keep pulling at my hair until Charlotte grabs both of my hands and holds them in hers. "Keep going Landon."
"He looked unstable trying to use the crutches, but he said he was still getting used to them. It's when we got into the car that I noticed how bad his legs were shaking and he was sweating...a lot. I asked him if he took any medications or something that was causing side effects, and he said no. I wanted to take him straight to the hospital, but he was strongly asking that I get him to PT. It's such a short ride, I thought Derek could help me figure out what was wrong. As soon as he stepped out of the car, I knew I should've brought him here," I wave my hand around the room.
"Then what, Landon?"
"Then... he couldn't breathe, or speak. He vomited as soon as we got through the door...and then...he...collapsed onto the floor and began seizing."
"Why are they saying he possibly overdosed?"
I pull my hands away from hers. This is my fault, he's here because of me. He might die because of me. I pace back and forth. What did I do...What did I do. "Fuck!"
"When I was doing the laundry the other day, I found two white pills," Charlotte whips her attention back to me. "I didn't know what they were or who's they were, and I didn't want to accuse Levi of anything, I thought maybe they were yours. Then I thought, you'd never have random pills laying around, they must be Levi's. I didn't know how to tell you about them without hurting him at the same time. So, yesterday I brought one of the pills to the pharmacy to be analyzed, just to be sure, before breaking the news to you. The pharmacy needed another day they told me."
"That's why you were acting strange when you got home last night?" Charlotte asks, I nod my head.
"I should've told you yesterday, I was going to tell you today after the pharmacy calls me back," I tell her. "This is my fault! If I had just said something sooner, this wouldn't have happened!"
I drop myself back into one of the chairs and burry my face. I feel Charlotte sit in the seat next to me and wait for her to yell at me, or hit me, or send me back to London; anything. She doesn't do anything though, the only thing I hear from her is her soft breathing, followed by an occasional sob. Derek takes a seat on the other side of me and the three of us sit in silence.
After a few minutes, I feel Charlotte's hand squeeze my thigh, so I look up at her, confused. She looks angry but not at me, which I don't understand.
"Landon gave one of the pills to the paramedic, so that the hospital can analyze it and see if that's what caused what happened to Levi," Derek finally speaks up.
Her hand squeezes my leg again, "Oh good, that's good Landon, thank you," she says to me. Why is she thanking me? She should be angry with me.
"This isn't your fault, you were trying to do the right thing and you were concerned enough to figure out what the pills were first. I get what you were doing Landon."
"What?" How can she not blame me?
"If anything, I should blame myself. I should know the signs and I should know if Levi was taking drugs. I never see the signs when it comes to him," her voice sounds so broken.
"It's not your fault either Charlotte. Why don't we wait and see what the doctors say?"
We try to keep it together the best we can. For the next hour, I hold Charlotte's hand while we wait for the doctor.
Finally, one of the doctors comes to find us. Charlotte springs out of her chair so fast, I had to keep my hand on her so she wouldn't trip.
"How is Levi?" She immediately asks.
"He's stable for now. It took a while for us to get his seizures under control. We found traces of a stimulant, Oxy, and fentanyl in his system. We think the fentanyl caused his brain to swell, which caused the reactions you saw and his seizures. The pill you gave us matched what we found in his bloodwork."
Charlotte's crying with disbelief. I wrap my arm around her while the doctor continues explaining what's going on.
"He's sedated now while we focus on getting the inflammation down. We are hoping he doesn't have any more seizures, but we will just have to wait and see."
"May I see him?" She asks.
"They are bringing him up to the ICU now and a nurse will come get you and take you to him."
"Thank you Doc," I shake his hand.
"Wait! He fell before his seizure. He has a spinal cord injury, did you find any other injuries? His right hip or back?" She asks the doctor.
"His x-rays were clear, but we won't know if he twisted or pulled anything until he wakes up. We can rule out any ligament or muscle injuries with a MRI."
"Okay...good...thank you."
We sit back down to wait for the nurse.
"I'm going to head back to work, call me if anything changes," Derek says to us.
"Thank you Derek, for everything," Charlotte gives him a hug.
Ten minutes later, a nurse brings us up to the ICU. Levi is hooked up to all sorts of monitors and has an oxygen tube up his nose. His skin is pale and the only movement from him is the rise and fall of his chest as he breathes. Thank goodness he's breathing.
Charlotte slowly observes him before moving to the side of his bed. She ever so gently glides her fingers through his hair and then kisses his forehead and starts crying again.
"What were you thinking Levi?" She whispers.
I'm standing at the end of his bed, watching Charlotte sob while she holds Levi's hand. She looks up at me with so much worry, so many questions, hoping I can answer them, but I can't.
"Why would he take those pills? That's not like him, he wouldn't take anything that would hurt his body...unless..." The tears keep flowing and we're both thinking the same thing, trying hard not to believe any of it.
"I don't think he did this on purpose, I don't think he was trying to end his life," I say to her.
"He tried to before," she whispers again.
"I know, but you saved him. Things were really bad for him then, but I don't think he really wanted to end his life back then either. He has a life with you now, I don't think he meant for this to happen."
"What if he's given up on himself again Landon? How do I save him a second time?"
"We'll help him together. We'll get him whatever help he needs. We don't even know if he was giving up, maybe he was trying to take something for his pain. We don't know until he talks to us Charlotte."
All of the sudden Levi's monitors go off and we look over to see his body thrashing around in his bed. "Another seizure!" Charlotte shouts.
Three nurses and a doctor come rushing in. They turn him to his side while the doctor injects more medication into his IV.
"Levi!" Charlotte cries out. I want to reach for her, but there are too many people crowding around his bed. The scene unfolding in front of me tears me to bits and all I can do is cry along with Charlotte.
Fuck Levi, why did you do this to yourself, to Charlotte, to me.
His seizing stops, so one of the nurses props pillows around him so he stays lying on his side. "Is this going to keep happening?" I ask her.
"It's a waiting game, we can only hope and pray for the best," she tells me. Her response is no consolation to me, I only feel more frustrated and helpless.
I look over towards Charlotte to see that the other nurse is looking down at her with a horrified expression on her face. When I see what the nurse is looking at, my face contorts into the same expression.
"Are you hurt ma'am?" She asks Charlotte.
"What?" Charlotte's clearly confused.
"Charlotte," I solemnly say her name, so she'll look at me. This isn't happening!
When Charlotte turns her gaze to me, it takes everything I've got left in me not to shed a tear.
"Charlotte, you're bleeding."
