Unexpected Neighbors

Levi's POV...

Charlotte's been sleeping most of the flight from Boston to LAX, with her head snug against my shoulder.  For me, the flight's been a bit uncomfortable. It was the first time in two weeks that I was able to walk with my crutches. It felt great to walk and not have to use the wheelchair, but walking to security then to our gate was a long ways and now I feel my muscles cramping up from sitting on this plane for so long.

Without waking her, I gently move Charlotte's head to rest against the back of the seat so I can stand up and stretch my legs. I can't decide if I should walk up and down the isle to keep my muscles moving, or if it's best to just stand and stretch. The last thing I want is for my leg to spasm. Charlotte for sure would have an airport assistant bring me a wheelchair to use when we land. Stretching will probably be the best option.

We take a taxi straight to her rehab facility after we land. Her colleagues happily greet her, they are glad to see her back. She hasn't been back here since before her surgery.

"I must have piles of paperwork to go through on my desk, mind if we go to my office for a while?"

"Not at all," I tell her.

She has a comfy couch in there, maybe I'll lay down and take a nap while she works.

"You've done a lot of walking today, how are you feeling," she asks, staring at me with a concerned look in her eyes.

"Sore...but a tired sore...not painful and no spasms," I hurry out that last part.

Shit! I shouldn't  have said that. She's going to feel guilty or put me back in the chair. I promised I'd tell her if I had even the slightest pain though, and I'm not going to start off this week by lying to her.

"I will just lay here on the couch and rest awhile so you can finish up your paperwork," I assure her by kissing her soft lips. I remove my leg brace and get comfortable on the soft cushions and close my eyes.

Three hours later I'm woken up by Charlotte tapping my shoulder. I stretch my arms while sitting up, then look over at the clock on the wall. "Whoa, sorry I slept so long."

"No worries Levi, I got a lot of work done."

She rolls across the office in her desk chair and stops in front of me. "So, I was thinking we could go check out an apartment I had in mind before going out to dinner and checking into our hotel," she smiles yet I still see some worry behind her multi-color eyes.

"We can walk there, but only if you are feeling up to it?"

That's why she looks worried. She's worried that I will be in pain later. Why can't things be simple for us ?

"I'll be fine, do you want to massage and stretch my leg before I put my brace back on?" I ask her, hoping she will feel a little less worried after she does that.

She smiles at me and gladly takes a seat on the couch next to me while I lay back and let her work into my muscles. I have to admit this helps a lot with the pain and mostly keeps the spasms at bay.

The apartment complex is surprisingly only a ten minute walk from the rehab center. The building looks fairly new, thankfully there are elevators to the fifth floor apartment that we are looking at. The building manager opens the door to apartment #504 and leaves us to look around.

"This is really nice," I admit as we enter the open concept living and dining area.

It's spacious enough. The walls are all white and there is wood flooring throughout. The kitchen is off to the left side as we walk past the doorway. Plenty of cabinet space and new stainless steal appliances. There are two bedrooms with wide entry doors, one to the right side when you enter the apartment and one past the kitchen and living room area. There are also two bathrooms, one closest to the kitchen and the other is an en-suite. Both bathrooms have large walk-in showers equipped with grab bars, as well as assistive bars around the toilet. A large porcelain tub completes the master bath.

"This is a handicap apartment?" I ask, unsure if I like this idea for our first home as a couple.

I hope she doesn't think I will always need handicap accessible bathrooms. I feel somewhat annoyed about this, or discouraged, maybe both.

She's quietly following me while I look around and I can feel her carefully accessing my reactions.

"I don't know If I like this place," I softly mumble while standing inside the doorway, looking into the master bathroom.

Suddenly I feel her standing behind me and moving her body closer to me. She slowly glides her arms through the space between my torso and my crutches and wraps them around the front of me. She leans her head against my back while she hugs me.

Somehow her hugging me always makes me feel better. The way her hands feel on my body. Her touch is gentle, yet firm, showing her love for me. She knows how to calm me down and helps me think more rationally about things. One of the many reasons why I love her.

"Levi, I know what you're thinking. You're not always going to need help, but it's always nice to have in case you need it. Plus, it's really nice having all this space in the rooms and everything is so modern in here, the bars look like they compliment the fixtures," she tries convincing me.

"Why do we need two bedrooms?" I'm curious. I'm sure this place is expensive with two bedrooms.

Charlotte releases me from her hug and starts to make her way back towards the kitchen, so I turn around and follow her.

"I thought it would be nice to have an extra room for when Landon, Andy, Mark, my parents, or whoever comes to visit."

"Really! Yeah, that's a great idea!" I reply with excitement now. This girl thinks of everything.

"Oh and I really think you will like the neighbors in the apartment across the hall," she proudly smiles and not a second later we hear a knock on the door.

"Do you mind getting that?" She asks me.

I crutch my way over to the door knowing it would be much easier for her to walk over and open the door; I've got a crutch in each hand, but okay!

The person at the door was not who I expected. I couldn't control the huge smile plastered across my face. I wanted to drop my crutches and give him a hug, that's how much I've missed him not being around.

"Hey neighbor," he beats me to it and wraps an arm around the back of my shoulder and pats my back.

"Jake! What...how are...what are you doing here," I start stuttering. "Wait...neighbor?" I question.

I move out of the doorway so Jake can enter. He looks great. The last time I saw him, he was using both crutches to walk around. He still wears braces on both legs, but he only needs a cane to help him get around now. I can't help but feel ashamed that I'm back to needing two crutches and a full leg brace to help me get around again. When Jake saw me last, I was walking only with my short brace.

Jake notices my frown as I look down at myself and he decides to speak. "Krysta and I live across the hall. When this place became available, I gave Charlotte a call. We would love for you two to be our neighbors!"

I turn to look at Charlotte who is just leaning against the kitchen counter smiling at me. I take another look around the place before feeling Jake lightly punch my shoulder. "So what do you say, Levi?"

"Yeah, why not," I shrug my shoulders and laugh with him.

"Great! We're all going out to dinner to celebrate, see you in the lobby at five!" Jake happily states before making his way back to his apartment.

I walk over to the kitchen area, set my crutches against the counter and take a seat on the stool next to Charlotte. She catches me lost in thought, continuously rubbing the the back of my neck with my hand until she reaches up and grabs my hand with hers. I can't believe she arranged all of this for me. Talking to Jake and knowing this would be a perfect place for me...for us to live.

She holds my hand and rubs her thumb across my palm, bringing me out of my trance.

"So what do you really think?"

"I think this place is great and I think you are amazing as always, I don't know what I would do without you," I admit.

"I don't know what you would do without me either," she laughs, making me laugh along with her.

I cup her face with my hands and bring her sweet lips towards mine. God I love this girl.
