Let's Make It Happen
Charlotte's POV....
"Today's the big day! Are you ready for this new adventure?"
We've barely woken up and I'm making sure I help him stretch and massage his muscles before getting out of bed.
It's been a week since his meeting with Mark and the Advertising company. Levi has his photo session today and I'm doing what I can to help his day go smoothly, beginning with proper range of motion exercises for his legs.
"Yeah, I'm excited to try this out, see where it goes."
His muscles are always so tight in the morning he can't hide his discomfort while I hold his stretch for a good 20 seconds. It's hard to keep the PT part of me from taking over.
"Thanks for helping me with this every morning. I know it takes up a lot of your time, and I want you to know how much I appreciate that you do this," he says to me.
"It's more time I get to spend with you. More time I can have my hands all over you," I playfully glide my hands up his thighs until he grabs my wrists and pulls me on top of him.
We both laugh and he tickles my neck with little kisses.
"I know what you're trying to do, and I love you for it," he says before kissing my lips.
"I'm only helping to relieve any nervous tension."
"I think you and me and a hot shower will help with that," he snickers.
We sit up and he drapes his arm around me so I can help him to the shower. Usually he takes his time walking without his AFO to the bathroom, but I'm not risking him doing that today by himself. Everything needs to go well for him, he needs this.
As soon as he's situated on the shower chair, he wastes no time pulling me onto his lap and lathering us both with shower gel. After that, well let's just say neither of us are worried about a thing. Today's going to be a great day.
He strolls into the kitchen using both crutches and looking sexy as hell with his tight fitted shirt and his hair slicked back. I'm sure the make-up artist on the set will spend another hour getting him camera ready, but he already looks perfect to me.
I serve us some bacon and eggs and we sit and enjoy each other's company for a little longer before heading our separate ways.
"So, I was thinking after your shoot we can go out to eat. Maybe talk about wedding plans?"
"What? Really? Yeah, that would be great, Love."
"I'm sorry I can't be at your photo shoot, I have a new patient coming into the facility." I so want to be there for him, but duty calls.
"I'll be fine Love. Mark will be there, it's going to be good," he smiles and kisses my temple.
Hours later, Mark drops him off at my rehabilitation center. Levi's smiling and joking around with Mark as they walk through the door, so I know that's a good sign.
He's still using both crutches but he's not limping a lot. I can't help worry that maybe it's been a long day for him.
"Hey Char!" Mark embraces me.
"This lad here was beyond anyone's expectations, he's got a real future in this."
Levi's still smiling, leaning forward on his crutches and shaking his head.
"I've always believed he'd be amazing at whatever job he does." I walk up closer and snake my arms around his waist and give him a kiss.
"It went really well. I have a call back and a few other companies want me to do a shoot for them too." He kisses me again.
"I'm so happy for you," I give him another squeeze and then step away.
"So, Boston next month, yeah?" Mark confirms.
I'm surprised for a second. "Boston?"
"Yeah, my mate landed a Calvin Klein contract," Mark pats Levi on the back.
"You're going to pose in underwear?" I ask laughing a little.
Both guys laugh as well. "Maybe," Levi shrugs and smirks.
"He's got about 2 months worth of work in Boston. I figured you'd be ok with that?" Mark asks.
"Yes, that's perfect. I need to catch up on things there anyway and I was thinking maybe we could get married while we're there?" I'm talking to Levi of course.
Mark clears his throat, making a fake coughing sound.
"Wow, ok, yeah if that's what you want Love."
"We can talk more at dinner tonight. I need to get to the gym and work with my new patient."
"I need to get going too. I'll see you in the morning at the studio. Charlotte, I'll see you in Boston." Mark gives me one last hug before leaving.
"Can I join you in the gym?" Levi asks.
Of Course that worries me again. I need to stop worrying so much.
I quickly look him over. He's supporting most of his weight on his crutches, which means he's tired.
"Yes, please join me. Are you feeling alright? You need me to do anything for you?"
"A little tired and stiff from standing all day. I'll be fine after some stretching. No worries Love."
"I always worry. Because I love you, not because I don't think you can't handle things."
"I know Love. And I'm grateful."
We walk side by side to the gym. He tells me he wishes he could hold my hand and makes a joke about his crutches. A few months ago, this really would've bothered him and he would've felt incapable, but he's learning how to move forward with his new life. Chris has helped him so much with this and I'm so proud of Levi's progress. I know there are plenty of things about his disability that affect him and seeing him happy and smiling right now after his new job opportunity is all that matters in this moment. We have all the time we need to work on everything else.
Zach is my new 19 year old patient. A rising lacrosse player in his first year of college, hit by a drunk driver and is now a T12 paraplegic. Poor kid has a long road ahead of him and mentally he's struggling with everything, as all of my patients do.
Levi quietly stretches on the mat across from us and I catch him staring at Zach a few times. Zach is frustrated and angry as expected. His mom was here with him all morning but now he's alone battling his emotions while I support him into a sitting position.
A few moments later and Zach's now staring at Levi.
"Hey, aren't you that actor from London that was hit by a car?" Zach asks him.
The kid's blunt, hopefully Levi isn't offended.
"Yeah, I am. Or I was. I live here now." Levi responds, his voice calm.
"Because you're paralyzed?" Zach asks. I understand what he's asking, he thinks Levi had to give up his famous life in London because if his injury and now Zach is wondering if that will be his fate too.
Levi smiles and shakes his head. "My injury changed my life for sure, but it also gave me a new one."
"A new shitty one, requiring crutches and wheelchairs," Zach retorts. " I can't even sit up on my own, what kind of life is this?"
Listening to these two talk breaks my heart. I know Levi felt the same way Zach did not too long ago, the only difference is Zach is so outspoken about his feelings.
" I couldn't sit on my own either. I couldn't feed myself, I had to learn how to use my arms and hands again. I was sad and frustrated," he tells Zach.
Zach has the use of his arms but no one can really say one spinal cord injury is better than the other. Everyone goes through the same grief and pain learning how to live with a different body.
"Shit! I didn't know you couldn't do all that. You use them now though?"
"Yeah, It was a lot of work getting to where I am now. I still have a long road ahead. My left arm is weaker than my right and my left leg doesn't work so well." Levi shows Zach his lower left leg and how it's different than his right one.
"You're young and strong and Charlotte here is the best therapist you could have. Keep working. Some days will be harder than others but you need to push through those. Don't give up Zach."
"I don't want to use crutches the rest of my life," Zach looks over at Levi's crutches.
"I don't either, that's why I'm not quitting and I'll be here working out and making sure you don't quit either."
"Thanks." Is all Zach says while we finish up with floor exercises.
My assistant takes Zach back to his room after so only Levi and I remain.
He's done his exercises and stretching and now it's my turn to massage his muscles and help him with range of motion to his ankle and foot.
I gently place is heel to rest on my thigh while I work into his calf muscle. "What you said to Zach really helped him I think."
"I hope so. I know what he's going through and I shut a lot of people out at first. I know that was a mistake now. Zach will benefit from talking to someone in a similar situation."
"I'm so proud of you Levi, for everything."
"I have you to thank for most of it! All of it really. You pulled me from the darkest place and you've never given up on me. I'll never be able to thank you enough for that."
"You not giving up on yourself is enough for me, Levi. Talking with Chris, being honest with me even if it means being vulnerable, moving forward together is all that matters."
"I love you Charlotte."
"I know and I think that's why we shouldn't wait any longer to get married. There's never a perfect time and I know we still have things to work out, but we're in a good place right now and I'm ready to tie myself to you forever. Together we can tackle all the good and all the bad and everything in between. There's no one better than you to share my future with."
"You're right, Love. Before, I felt like I wasn't going to be enough for you. That you needed a husband with two working legs who could run and jump and go on adventures with our children. I still feel that way sometimes knowing how much help I need some days. I want to marry you though. You're the only person I want to be with every day, even the tough days."
"You're more than enough for me Levi. Two working legs or one working leg, you'll always be enough. And we'll be there for each other helping each other up when we fall, and cheering each other on when we succeed."
I slip his sock over his foot and up his calf before attaching his brace and then offer him my hand to help him stand. Before I hand him his crutches, he pulls me into a hug.
" I'm the luckiest man on earth to have found someone like you," he whispers into my ear.
"I'm pretty lucky too," I squeeze my arms around him.
We let go of each other and he takes his crutches.
"So you want to get married in Boston, huh?"
"If that's ok with you, handsome? I know you have some bad memories there but we have so many more good memories too. We fell in love in Boston so I thought we should marry there?"
"Perfect, Love," he leans over and kisses my forehead.
" Let's make it happen."
