Hope Im Wrong
Landon's POV...
My hand reaches into my pocket, my fingers absentmindedly playing with the tiny ziplock pouch I found yesterday while doing the laundry.
I don't want to assume who it belongs to, I don't want to believe it either.
On the other hand, I my assumptions may be completely off which is why nothing about today makes it easy for me to address the matter.
They could belong to Charlotte for all I know, but they didn't fall out of Charlotte's shorts, and they don't look prescribed. She wouldn't be taking some random pills, and definitely not while pregnant. Levi couldn't either. He's not like that. He's been through hell and he feels like he'll too on most days, but he wouldn't seek drugs from anyone...not the Levi I've known my whole life anyway.
I can't even begin to describe how happy I am that they want me to be the godfather, how happy I am that their appointment went well for the most part.
I'm worried for them more than ever though, worried for Levi, and worried about the pills I found. Levi is practically scared out of his mind about becoming a father, now he's scared about something happening to Charlotte or the baby. Everything about his current situation is stressful for him and that's only half of it. The other half being the fact that Emma has made him extremely self conscious about his disability and completely paranoid into thinking Charlotte will leave him too because of it. In my mind, that's crazy, Charlotte will never give up on him, but in Levi's mind he thinks it's possible.
I fear my suspicions of what I'm holding in my pocket might be true and if they are, I'm going to be here by his side this time when everything comes crumbling down on him. God I hope I'm wrong.
I know Levi all to well, and I know he wants to be a better man for his soon to be wife and child, he wants to be a complete man. Deep down he realizes he will never be complete, that his injury has life long complications. The once carefree, adventure loving lad I know now trudges through life with a careworn expression, his disability affecting his mind more than his body. Why do bad things happen to such good people?
He's always had the biggest heart and will do anything for the ones he loves... even if that means hurting himself in the process.
"What's got you so quiet?" I hear him ask me. I'm driving him to the studio so I can offer him any help he might need. I saw him struggle the last time in London, trying to make a go at it, after barely learning how to walk again with the love of his life on the other side of the ocean. This time will be different, this time Charlotte and I are both here, encouraging him. Which is why I need to wait to have my talk with him. He's excited about this job and excitement from him is a rarity these days.
"I just have something on my mind, but it can wait," I tell him. I'm not sure if that will make him more anxious but he says, "Okay," and leaves it at that.
We pull into the studio parking lot and Levi notices the portable ramp that's been placed over the stairs for him.
I notice his lips twitch, like he's unsure yet thankful about it. "Mark came through," he hums. "I don't think my hip can handle walking up any steps, I think I might've hurt it or something," My eyes pop out, surprised he's openly confessed that to me.
"What does Charlotte say about it?" It's good he's being open with me, I need to keep that going.
"She thinks I might've too, wants me to get a MRI tomorrow," he tells me.
"Thats's good, hopefully you'll get some answers and Charlotte will know how to fix it I'm sure. And if you need any help getting around today, don't be a bloke about it," I nudge his shoulder. "You'll tell me, alright?"
"Yeah, thanks," he says.
He steps out of the jeep, leaving one crutch in the back seat while slipping his hand into the other, straightening himself up with all the confidence he can gather.
"You coming?" He asks me. I chuckle to myself, glad to get a glimpse of his old humor.
He's slow up the ramp. I think there's something wrong with his hip as well, by the looks of it. Just what he needs, I frown to myself. He's not letting it bother him though and enters the studio as calm and collective as he used to be.
"Levi! I'm Alivia, I'll be making sure everything goes well for you today," Levi's right hand is gripping his crutch so Alivia doesn't offer to shake it. She looks to me instead with her outreached hand, "Alivia," she states. I shake it," Landon."
"Yeah, um my mate here can also offer his help if I need it," Levi says to her. She quickly glances at his leg brace before continuing on.
"Okay, so this should only take a few hours," we follow her around as she speaks. "These are the energy drinks," she gives each of us a bottle. "You may as well try them out now, so you know what to expect when we begin filming."
She brings us over to the green screen and pauses, her eyes roam over Levi's brace and crutch again and I see the gears shifting in her head, thinking of the best course of action.
"There are some chairs you can sit in over there, Landon. You'll have a clear view of Levi from there," She points.
Levi hands me his crutch, "Hold onto this for me?" He asks.
"How long are you able to stand without support? Just so I know when you need breaks," Alivia asks Levi.
Usually he can stand for a good amount of time if that's all he's doing, but he's looking down at his hip and he knows it might be a problem for him today.
He rubs the back of his head with his hand, "About ten minutes... give or take," he shrugs.
"No problem, we'll get right to it then," she smiles at him.
I take a seat, holding Levi's crutch, ready to give it back if he asks. I watch him limp over to a chair in the corner where people start working on his hair and make-up. Not that his flawless face needs any, I guess it's better for the camera though. He's used to this part, people perfecting his clothes and hair style, pampering him with sparkling water and whatever else he might like. He appreciates every ounce of attention given to him, not taking it for granted like most famous people do. That's what makes Levi so exceptional. I'm sure anyone is willing to work with him, even with his handicap.
He looks like he's enjoying himself, talking with the producer and stage personnel. Alivia watching him like a hawk, making sure he gets whatever he needs. Mark really pulled some strings here.
Back to the green screen, the director yells "Take one" and everyone hurries into position. Levi has the energy drink in his hand and says his lines right on cue. The director has him do it a few more times , holding the drink differently each time. The repetition doesn't bother Levi at all, he's in his element here.
Someone yells "Cut" and Levi waves me over. I'm quick to my feet and hand him his crutch which he gladly accepts.
I notice him lean all his weight on his crutch while relieving pressure to his right hip. "You okay?" I ask him.
"Yeah, I'm good, just need to rest it a minute," he says.
"You're doing great Levi. A couple more takes and we should be done earlier than expected," someone else shouts from the background.
He pushes his crutch towards me to take. "You sure?" I ask again.
"Yeah, I've got this. Thanks mate."
I go back to my seat and we are done thirty minutes later. Everyone's ecstatic at how well it went and how quickly it wrapped up. Levi's smiling and talking with the director again. I motion for Alivia to take the crutch from me and bring it to Levi so I don't disrupt his conversation.
All in all, everything was great. Levi was perfect, he didn't have to worry about his legs or showing off his limp. He worked through any pain he was having, although his cheerful attitude through it all shows me that he might not have been in much pain at all. That's a relief in itself.
I'm happy for him and that he was able to do this. I hope Mark can find him more of these gigs.
"I'm done," he happily says as he walks up to me.
"That went well," I say to him, waiting for him to agree.
"It did, Yeah. I can't wait to tell Charlotte," his smile is huge at the mention of her name.
I drive him back home, not having any opportunity to bring up the pills I found because he fills the ride with endless chatter. The commercial shoot was much better that we all anticipated. He's boasting with pride about it, there's no way I'm ruining that.
Maybe I should wait and ask Charlotte about the pills, maybe they are hers. Or maybe they're not and if she doesn't know about Levi taking them and we both confront him, he might shut down on us again. Shit! There's no good way to go about this.
Charlotte rushes into Levi's arms when we walk through the door. He places his crutches by the door and picks her up off the ground and kisses her. They are both giddy and smiling as she drapes his arm around her neck and walks with him to the couch.
I go to my room, smiling as I listen to Levi talk about his successful afternoon. Charlotte beaming back at him and congratulating him on a job well done.
I pull the tiny pouch of pills out of my pocket and examine them again while I try and decide what to do next. I think I should figure out what these are first before jumping to any conclusions. What if these are legit and I speak about them too soon. Then again, if Levi is harming himself, it needs to be addressed sooner than later.
When Levi's at his MRI tomorrow, I'll do some investigating. I can Possibly ask Derek or Nate if Levi's ever been prescribed any medications without directly telling them what I've found. Maybe I could also figure out a way to ask Charlotte, make it sound like I'm innocently asking if Levi takes anything for his pain or if she would think about prescribing him anything.
There's got to be an explanation. Charlotte wouldn't let Levi suffer in agony unless he was hiding what he really feels. I wouldn't put that past him. He already thinks the physical therapy she does with him every day at home is a burden for her. It isn't of course, but we've all tried convincing him. He doesn't want to be any more work for her and stress her out more if she knew the extent of his pain.
I'm afraid she might find out the truth the hard way. I hope I'm wrong.
