Best Mate

LANDON's POV...

Today, I decided to tag along with Levi and Mark to another meeting. Levi is signing his contract for the new commercial he'll be staring in, while Mark is making sure all the legalities are in place. So, I am sitting in Charlotte's jeep, outside a TV studio waiting.

The weather here in California is making it very tempting for me to move here. I would need some kind of working visa or find an American girlfriend. That's tempting too, maybe Charlotte has a single friend who's just as nice as she is.

I wouldn't mind living closer to Levi. I miss the lad. We've been friends since primary school and up until his injury, we haven't been apart for longer than a week.

I was there the night Levi was hit by the car, the scariest night of my life. I was there at the hospital in London and when he had his surgery, then he was whisked away to Boston, while I was left wondering what the fuck was happening with my best mate...my brother.

I called Charlotte's rehabilitation center every day for months. Because I wasn't immediate family and because Levi refused to put my name on the call and visitor's list, I was in the dark. Every day spent waiting for an update from his parents ripped away what sanity I was holding on to. It wasn't enough, getting bits and pieces of what was going on from Mark or Levi's parents. They assured me he was well taken care of and told me whenever he was gaining small strides, but I needed to see for myself.

Levi was scared, I knew him well enough to know that. And, when I saw Emma back here in London after she had given up on Levi, it took everything in me not to rip her blonde hair out of her pretty little head.

That's when I almost lost it completely. I took the next flight to Boston and when I arrived at the rehabilitation center, I demanded to speak with Charlotte.

At this point, Charlotte was more than willing to talk with me. I could sense she needed my help. She told me what he tried to do to himself after Emma left him and that gutted me to the core. I wasn't there for my mate when he needed me. I should've been here sooner.

Charlotte promised me that she would convince Levi to see me and told me to fly back to London and wait for her call. Not long after, Charlotte along with my mate Andy and I came up with a plan to surprise him.

It was tough at first, seeing Levi in a wheelchair, unable to stand or walk. His arms and legs shook from muscle spasms at times. His body's nerves slow to connect when he wanted them too. He was alive and talking though, and that's all that mattered to me. He went through hell during the first few months and survived, if anything, he's my hero.

Once Levi figured out Andy and I would treat him as the friend he's always been, he finally began to let us in on his new life.

I promised myself I would always be here for him, and the next time he tells me to stay away, I'm not listening.

Now with a new baby on the way, Levi's insecurities have multiplied by 100. He thinks he won't be able keep up with the demands of a child.

So, here I am, to show him that he can.

Emma fucked with his head at the worst possible time in his life and as a result, Levi struggles with his self confidence and worth. Charlotte Loves every piece of Levi, yet he's constantly pushing his body beyond it's limits because he's afraid she'll leave him too.

Levi refuses to accept his limitations, which is good and bad for him. He thinks he's a burden most of the time and thinks one day we will all be tired of helping him.

Imperfections or not, Charlotte is with him through it all, showering him with the love and praise he deserves. Helping Levi isn't a chore for her, it's unconditional love, something I envy of him. No doubt it's Emma's fault that Levi has difficulty believing in all the things he can do and instead focuses on the things he can't do.

Hence why Charlotte and I came up with the plan to help him learn to enjoy life's outdoor adventures again. He was hesitant at first but surprisingly agreed without a fight.

"What did you do this whole time, take a nap?" Mark startles me when they both return to the jeep.

"Nah, I was enjoying all the people watching, quite comical," I chuckle to myself thinking about all the crazy shit I've seen from people here in the last hour. Hollywood is entertaining for sure.

Levi opens the front passenger door and throws his crutch into the back seat. He begins to lift his left leg into the jeep then abruptly brings his foot back down to the pavement. I can see his muscles twitching and his face tense up.

"You good?" I ask him.

"Yeah, I'm good, just a muscle spasm." He turns his body so that he can plant his butt on the seat first before using his hands to lift his legs into the vehicle. I'm glad he can adapt so that's it's easier for him, but that's the shit that bothers him the most...having to change and adapt.

Once we're all settled, I drive us to Logan airport so Mark can catch his flight back to London.

"Everything looks to be set for next week, call me with any hiccups," Mark says to Levi.

"Will do, thanks again Mate," Levi replies.

Our drive back to pick up Charlotte from work is mostly quiet at first. I see the wheels turning in his head, trying to keep his thoughts from me.

Before I have a chance to break the silence, he speaks, "I know Charlotte thinks this trip is a great idea, but I haven't been biking or hiking or any of that yet, I'm probably going to disappoint her."

I knew him agreeing so easily last night was too good to be true. At least he's being honest with how he feels.

"First off, this adventure was my idea. Charlotte was running out of ideas to motivate you. And second, you used to love doing all those things, so it's time you get back at them."

He's about to argue with me so I stop him. "And before you start complaining that you'll need a lot of help and your legs will spasm and give out on you... I know it will be a challenge and that's what I'm here for... to help. There's nothing wrong with needing some help so that you can do the things you enjoy doing."

His stubborn face is turned as he peers out the window. "Be prepared to help a lot," he says. "I don't want Charlotte doing more than she already needs to, I don't want to stress her or the baby."

"Deal", I smirk.

This is going to be fun.
