Chapter Thirty Eight

Luz

The girl shivered. Everything was so cold and burning hot at the same time.

She was in a dark room. For a second, she thought she was still mist, but the blinding pain in her abdomen seemed to suggest otherwise. As her eyes adjusted to the luminosity of the room, she started to distinguish a bed laid out in the middle of a small living area, the wall covered in pictures and drawings and maps. She recognised Mat's hand in all the schemes. She had been there only once before, but she figured that must have been Mat's house in Denver.

Mathias himself was asleep on a chair next to the bed, his head leaning on the mattress. Next to him, Isaac was in the same position. The aura of magic that usually surrounded him was lighter, as if all of his energy had been drained.

Judging from the stars high in the sky, it was the middle of the night. The others must have been asleep in the other rooms.

The girl moved her feet tentatively and moved slowly out of the bed. Her body was so heavy in the corporeal form. Every step felt like she was moving against the current in a river. She peaked into one of the bedrooms and saw Andre and Jane sleeping in a large bed.

Jane's arms were wrapped in bandages and she had a bad cut over her forehead, but apart from that she seemed fine. Andre was unharmed, sign that their plan to be used as a distraction for them to get out of the city had worked just fine.

She leaned over her friend and touched softly her shoulder.

-Isaac ... - she whispered still halfway in the dream world.

-Ehm no, but do feel free to kiss me -

Andre opened her eyes all of a sudden, and tears started to cloud them. -You idiot! You should be in bed - she whispered.

The girl made her sign to stay silent and to follow her to the only empty room in the house. It was a small closet, probably meant for clothes, that Mat had used to keep scrap of metals and unfinished projects. The girl had to fight her urge to start playing around with the thousands of switches on the console and sat down on a chair.

She felt something in her abdomen pulling, most likely stitches. She lifted her shirt to check that the bandages were still holding.

-You scared us there -her friend started. - Actually no, worse than that. You scared ME. And you know how I hate that. -

The girl fidgeted with her hands. -So what exactly happened when I was out? -

Andre's heart spiked with concern and fear. -I can only tell you what Isaac and Jane told me, but it's pretty confused. - she crossed her arms. -You guys were fighting, and losing, against fifty immortals. According to Mathias, you only managed to stay alive and retreat towards a plane because some of them where undecided... uncertain on what to do. How on Earth he would know that is a mistery, but I shouldn't be surprised considering he also decided to avoid telling us he was an immortal. - Andre eyed her up and down. -which I am guessing you already knew. -

The girl pointed her eyes on the floor underneath her feet, avoiding to answer.

-You were fighting the most magically gifted immortal that Isaac had ever seen. - she continued. -And somehow you won, getting shredded like spaghetti in the process. -

-That's when it got really confused. The immortals were closing on Isaac and the others, leaving the pile of copper unguarded. You stupidly decided to go towards it and melt it with the last of your strength. Mathias tried to warn you that there was fuel all over the place, but you didn't listen and the whole thing exploded. - she paused shivering. - Most of the remaining immortals run away, leaving Isaac and Jane to fight a few. They tried to leave because ... because no one could survive an explosion that big, no even an immortal with fire magic. -

-Jane said Mathias went quite literally insane. - she continued. Andre leaned on the wall, as if looking for something solid to help her tell the story. -He fell to the ground screaming in pain, clutching at his chest shouting random words like a man having a stroke. When he managed to get to his feet he said you were still alive, and they couldn't leave until they found you. -

The girl's eyes encouraged her to go on. She was greatful to the darkness or Andre would have been able to see the tears rolling down her cheeks. She had picked Andre for explanation because she knew that she hadn't experienced it first hand, and maybe she wouldn't have been so afraid of her powers. By the looks of it, she was wrong.

-Near the site of the explosion there was dark fog ... like ... like mist, but in the middle of the sun. - she said. -Mathias muttered something about bringing you back. Isaac was about to knock him out and carry him onto the plane when he felt ... he felt you. Somehow, somewhere deep into the mist, he recognised your fire magic. And that's when you solidified again. Partially. -

-The carried you into the plane and... I am not sure ... Isaac said you kept shifting from smoke to human and he couldn't keep you whole long enough to cure you. - Andre smiled sadly, as if she though her significant other had lost his mind too. -I didn't believe it, but then Jane said the same thing. And Jane isn't as easily fooled. She was driving the plane, and said the altitude kept dropping everytime a current created from within the plane. -

....
