Chapter Seven - third part

Her heart sparkled with confusion, rage, sadness, loneliness and more rage all in a matter of seconds. Her emotions were so strong Isaac was barely able to distinguish one from the other.

Andre's hand had lowered to his arm, but was shaking slightly. He must have felt what the boy had done.

-Jane, what you feel is normal. The mist people had taken our emotions away to transform us into mindless dogs to do their dirty work. Isaac ... I think Isaac must have broken the enchantment. - he told the immortal.

Jane was not listening. She started screaming and fighting her iron ropes even more, ending up with cuts all over her arms and legs.

-Stop that, you will hurt yourself - ordered Isaac.

-Take it back! Take it back! - Jane pleaded.

He didn't want to reveal that he had no idea how to. That he had no idea how he had broken the enchantment in the first place.

-It's natural to react this way, you are not used to the emotions- he explained instead. -But this is the way we are meant to exist. -

Jane's pupils were so dilated it was impossible to see the chocolate brown of her eyes. Her forehead was covered in sweat. Any mortal would have thought she was under some kind of allucinogen substance, but Isaac knew she was just transitioning into feelings.

-I killed him - she muttered, her voice almost indistinguishable with the tears in her mouth. -They told me to do it and I killed him... I didn't feel anything for him but he was my friend and I ... killed him. -

The boy realised she was talking about the engineer she had been married to before her assignment.

-Take it back! -

-Give us the meeting point location! - shouted Andre back.

Jane screamed in rage.

-She needs some time to adjust - offered Isaac.

-Valeria has been taken prisoner because of her! We need the location now so that we can move on with this mission and go and get her! -

Isaac knew a Andre was right, and yet ... Jane was so powerless and clueless. She had just realised that she had killed someone blindly. That would have been him if Andre and Valeria hadn't stopped him from taking that baby. He owed to the immortal a second chance, maybe she wasn't too far gone. Maybe he could use her life as redemption for all the tortures he inflicted upon mortals in the past.

-Jane can put magic in her words - Isaac remembered. -If there is someone who can get Valeria out of prison, it's her. We just need to ... explain our reasons. -

Andre shot him a killing look but stepped back.

Isaac knelt next to the girl in chains and carefully placed his hands in hers. She had stopped moving altogether, barely breathing.

-The mist people are our enemies and we are trying to understand what their main plan is. They exiled us because they couldn't control us. Please help us. -

She didn't reply. Her heartbeat was getting slower and slower, the cuts from her chains touching the bare iron. Isaac frowned. He didn't want to find out what iron could do to an immortal's circulatory system.

-I am going to take these chains off now. - he said. -But I can and I will kill you if you attempt to escape. Have I been clear enough? -

Jane didn't move as he unlocked the chain from her wrists and ankles, but her cheeks gained some colour.

-I am going to make you fall asleep now, you need to rest -

Isaac did not wait for a reply as he pulled the magic strings around her heart and watched her eyes closing down. He carefully picked her up and laid her still body on the bed.

-Isaac? -

He left the room. He needed fresh air, or even stale air. He just didn't want to see the results of another tortured soul.

Someone scrolled him by the shoulder. He could barely feel it.

-Isaac? -

His mind kept darting back at what it felt like to have a whole person's existence wrapped around his fingers. To have his shadows enveloping another living thing, sucking the energy out of it.

He felt so dirty. His throat was dry, his chest hollow.

-Isaac? Can you hear me Isaac? -

Andre lifted his chin in his hands. Isaac had fallen to his knees again and his friend had followed him. He was waving some sort of ointment under his nose.

-I am ok - he whispered as tears filled his eyes.

He turned around abruptly. He didn't want Andre to see him so ... so weak. He didn't want anyone to see him at all. Not when he knew he was so broken and evil deep inside. None of the other immortals could use as much magic as he could. He was an abnormality, a monster amongst monsters.

Andre's hands wrapped around his face once again and pulled him towards him. Isaac found himself staring deep into his golden eyes.

-Whatever you think of yourself, you are wrong- said his friend. -You are kind and generous and good. If anyone had half of the power you possess, they would have made the world theirs already, just like the mist people are doing right now. -

Isaac had no idea how Andre could tell what he was thinking. They had always understood each other silently, but that was before ... before everything happened.

Andre's heart sparked with an ancient emotion. It wasn't anything like Isaac had ever seen anyone feeling before. It was as if something had been buried under layers and layers of rock and something had dragged it out again.

Isaac perceived the confusion in Andre's own emotions turning into something else entirely when he closed the space between their faces and kissed him.

It wasn't the right time or place to make such an impulsive move. It wasn't even the right emotion driving him. But in that moment, as Andre's lips parted for his tongue, all else seemed irrelevant.
