Apollonia

Just finished my final exam💀

**********

Apollonia walked slightly behind the two on the way to the Hypnos cabin lost in her thoughts. Apollonia was frustrated. She forgot that Jason was just as fluent in Latin as she and Chiron. If they were around Greek demigods and they didn't want to cause panic, they'd speak in Latin. It was their getaway language. The fact that Apollonia busted herself so foolishly made her more frustrated with herself rather than with Jason and Annabeth. What Hera had up her sleeve this time was beyond her and wished to leave her in that prison, but knew it would lead to catastrophe if they did.

Apollonia can feel Jason's eyes fleeting her way every few seconds. She could tell he wants to ask her something but he stayed quiet, she was thankful for that.

They finally stopped in front of a cabin that looked like an old-fashioned prairie house, with mud walls and a rush roof. A wreath of red poppies hanging on the front door.

"You think this is my parent's cabin?" Jason asked.

"Gods no Jason. I'm not too sure who your parent is but I know for a fact Hypnos, Roman as Somnus, God of Sleep, is not it" Apollonia said amusingly.

"Then why—"

"You have memory loss," Apollonia said, "And if there's a God that can help with that, it's Hypnos"

They walked into the cabin and saw three kids asleep under the covers. A warm fire crackled, and above the mantle, a branch dropped milky drops from the River Lethe into tin bowls. Soft violin music played around the cabin. Apollonia glanced over to Jason and saw that he was about to fall asleep.

She rolled her eyes then smacked the back of his head. He gasped, now fully awake again, holding the place that she struck. He looked down at her to see she had a playful look on her face, she wrapped an arm around his waist to make sure he doesn't touch anything or fall asleep again.

"C'mon amnesic boy, we're here to figure out that brain of yours not to sleep. The Hypnos cabin does this to everyone. Even more dangerous than the Ares' cabin, at least you can find the land mines there" Apollonia said while dragging the boy with her by the waist to Clovis.

"Land mines?" Jason asked.

She just slightly smiled and saw Jason smiling down at her in the corner of her eye but tried not to pay any mind to it. When they got to Clovis' bunk she lightly shook him gently calling him from his slumber.

"Hmm....."

"Clovis!" Annabeth yelled once the first wake up call didn't work, shaking him harder and knocking him on the head.

Apollonia leaned into Jason to whisper, "At least I didn't hit you that hard to wake you up," Jason just shook his head and smiled at her.

"Wh-Wh-What?" Clovis complained cutely, sitting up and squinting.

He did a big yawn that made Annabeth, Apollonia, and Jason yawn too. Jason lightly smacked the back of Nia's head playfully, replicating what she did to him earlier but softer. She just rolled her eyes at him and shook her head.

"Clovis please don't do that. We need your help first" Apollonia said.

"I was sleeping," he answered.

Annabeth rolled her eyes, "When are you not?"

"Good night."

Before he could fall asleep, Annabeth took the pillow from underneath his head.

"That's not fair," Clovis complained, "Give it back."

"We'll give it back later," Apollonia said, "Once you help us first."

Clovis sighed, his breath smelling like warm milk. "Fine. What?"

Annabeth and Apollonia explained Jason's situation the best they could. However, a couple of times they had to snap their fingers under his nose to keep him awake. He stretched and looked at Jason.

"So you don't remember anything, huh?"

"Just impressions," Jason said, "Feelings, like..."

"Yes?" Clovis pressed.

"As I know I shouldn't be here. At this Camp. I'm in danger."

"Hmm. Close your eyes." Jason looked at Apollonia, who was still holding his waist, for reassurance. She nodded, and let go of his waist. He took a deep breath and closed his eyes. Apollonia caught him as he began to fall forwards. She brought him over to the chair by the fire, and Clovis, Annabeth, and her kneeled next to him. She watched his body almost disappear, almost like he was dissolving into thin air. She became worried seeing him almost dissolve into nothingness. She gripped her own hand in reassurance.

"This is serious, all right," Clovis said as Jason opened his eyes, his body becoming more opaque and real.

"What happened?" Jason said. "How long—"

"Only a few minutes. But you almost dissolved," Annabeth said, her tone worried. He looked flabbergasted but the look on Apollonia's face told him it was true.

"Usually," Clovis said, "memories are lost for a good reason. They sink under the surface like dreams, and with good sleep, I can bring them back. But this . . ."

"Lethe?" Annabeth asked.

"No, not even Lethe."

"Lethe?" Jason asked. Clovis pointed to the tree branch above the fireplace. "The River Lethe in the Underworld. It dissolves your memories, wipes your mind clean permanently. That's the branch of a poplar tree from the Underworld, dipped into the Lethe. It's the symbol of my father, Hypnos. Lethe is not a place you want to go swimming."

Apollonia nodded. "I went there a couple of times, once with Percy. It is powerful enough to wipe the mind of a Titan."

"But... That's not my problem?" Jason asked.

"No," Clovis agreed. "Your mind wasn't wiped, and your memories weren't buried. They've been stolen."

"Stolen," Jason said as his mind tried to process what Clovis just said, "How?"

"A God. Only a God would have that kind of power."

"We know that. It was Juno. But how did she do it, and why?" Clovis scratched his neck. "Juno?"

"Hera," Annabeth clarified. "Jason likes Roman names for some reason."

"Hmm," Clovis said.

"What?" Jason asked. "Does that mean something?"

"Hmm," he said again. Apollonia realized he was snoring, and snapped her fingers in front of his face. "Clovis! Hello?!"

"What? What?" His eyes fluttered open. "We were talking about pillows, right? No, Gods. I remember. Greek and Roman. Sure, it could be important."

"But they're the same Gods," Annabeth said. "Just different names."

"Not exactly," Clovis said at the same time Apollonia spoke.

"Absolutely not Annabeth," Apollonia said annoyed.

Jason sat forward. "What do you mean, not exactly?"

"Well..." Clovis yawned. "Some Gods are only Roman. Like Janus, or Pompona. But even the major Greek Gods— it's not just their names that changed when they moved to Rome. Their appearances changed. Their attributes changed. They even had slightly different personalities."

Annabeth hesitated. "So people saw them differently through centuries. But that doesn't mean they change who they are."

"It absolutely does, Beth. Back in Roman times, they made me more destructive and more ruthless otherwise I would've been tamed into a soft maiden like they did your mother. They did stuff to bring that ruthlessness out of me to conquer more lands."

Clovis then began to fall asleep, and Jason snapped his fingers under his nose.

"Coming, mother! I mean... yeah, I'm awake. So, um, personalities. Like Nia said, The Gods change to reflect their host cultures. You know that, Annabeth. I mean, these days, Zeus likes tailored suits, reality television, and that Chinese food place on East Twenty-Eighth Street, right? It was the same in Roman times, and the Gods were Roman almost as long as they were Greek. It was a big empire, lasted for centuries. So of course their Roman aspects are still a big part of their character."

"Makes sense," Jason said.

Annabeth shook her head, clearly mystified. "But how do you know all this, Clovis?"

"Oh, I spend a lot of time dreaming. I see the Gods there all the time— always shifting forms. Dreams are fluid, you know. You can be in different places at once, always changing identities. It's a lot like being a God, actually. Like recently, I dreamed I was watching a Michael Jackson concert, and then I was on stage with Michael Jackson, and we were singing this duet, and I could not remember the words for The Girl Is Mine. Oh, man, it was so embarrassing, I—"

Apollonia raised an eyebrow "Clovis, dear, let's get back to Rome, please?"

"Right, Rome," Clovis said. "So we call the Gods by their Greek names because that's their original form. But saying their Roman aspects are exactly the same— that's not true. In Rome, they became more warlike. They didn't mingle with mortals as much. They were harsher, more powerful— the Gods of an empire."

"Like the dark side of the Gods?" Annabeth asked.

"Not exactly," Clovis answered while Apollonia said at the same time, "Sure"

"They stood for discipline, honour, strength—"

"Good things, then," Jason spoke up, and Apollonia scowled at him, "I mean, discipline is important, right? That's what made Rome last so long."

"The empire fell, didn't it? Plus, my form is the exact opposite of good, Jason" Apollonia seethed just thinking about her Roman form.

Clovis gave him a look. "That's true I guess. But the Roman Gods weren't very friendly. For instance, my dad, Hypnos... didn't do much except sleep in Greek times. In Roman times, they called him Somnus. He liked killing people who didn't stay alert at their jobs. If they nodded off at the wrong time, Boom!— they never woke up. He killed the helmsman of Aeneas when they were sailing from Troy."

"Nice guy," Annabeth said. "But I still don't understand what it has to do with Jason."

"Neither do I," Clovis said. "But if Hera took your memory, only she can give it back. And if I had to meet the queen of the gods, I'd hope she was more in a Hera mood than a Juno mood. Can I go back to sleep now?"

Annabeth sighed, standing up and throwing Clovis his pillow. "Thanks, Clovis. We'll see you at dinner."

"Can I get room service?" Clovis yawned and stumbled to his bunk. "I feel like... zzzzz...." He collapsed with his butt in the air and his face buried in a pillow.

"Won't he suffocate?" Jason asked in concern.

"No, he'll be just fine," Apollonia said, and then stared at Jason so intense that he noticed the fire in her eyes. "But I think Juno truly screwed you over this time."

Jason rolled his eyes at the girl in front of him. Annabeth elbowed her just as the bell for dinner rang. "Let's go have dinner I'm starving"

As they were walking to the dining pavilion Nia decided that it would be a good idea to inform Jason of the rules there, "Okay Jason, so at the dining pavilion, we all sit with our siblings but since we don't know who your godly parent is, you are going to sit at the Hermes table since he's the god of travellers. All-new undetermined kids sit there. Just a word of advice, guard your food with your life or it'll be all gone before you could even start eating." Jason nodded.

They finally got to the dining pavilion and went their own separate ways. Apollonia went over to the Apollo table and sat down at the end in front of Will.

"So, how'd the tour go with Mr Hyper over there?" Apollonia asked her brother. On her plate, she visioned lasagna with bits of ambrosia and there it appeared. She chose to drink banana milk, one of her favourites.

Will swallowed his food before answering, "Eh, it went good I guess. I heard you went all Roman earlier. You doin' alright sis?" he asked in concern. Will is her closest sibling, even after living so long, they just clicked in a way none of her siblings was able to. She loves all her siblings, but Will was definitely her favourite. She tells him everything, how her life was like, what terrors still plague her mind, also of the fact that she has a Roman form that she despises with a passion. So, when Will heard she went all Roman, of course, he got worried.

"Yeah, I just saw something that I didn't like, that's all. Don't be too worried about it" Apollonia said nonchalantly. She knew Will saw through her so before he could say anything about it, she jumped up to the fire to sacrifice to her dad. "Dad I really miss you, I wish I could come back home"

When Apollonia's night terrors got too much for her, she would sleep in her father's palace in Olympus, which was often. She doesn't know why, but just having her dad around just eased her mind. When she would wake up screaming, Apollo would come running in with a dreamless potion remedy he always prepares for her then he would sometimes stay in her room until she falls asleep again.

Apollo was one of the best dads' out of the Olympians in her opinion. Yes, he may have one of the most kids but he visits his mortal kids in dreams all the time or if they are having nightmares, he would appear in them to tell them that they are safe and it's just a dream. He really was a good dad and they all knew that. That was probably the reason why no Apollo kids turned to the Titan's side in the war. He would never need to go into Apollonia's dreams because she stayed with him most of the time.

She slowly walked back to the table thinking about everything happening around her. Will broke her out of her thoughts, "So why didn't you stay with dad lately? You can surely still teleport in with your teleportation charm can't you?"

Nia shook her head, "No, dad gave me a choice to either stay here until Zeus opens up Olympus again or stay with him. I was just going to stay with him and try to see if I could try to find answers to where Percy was from up there while taking some time to relax. Dad convinced me that I would definitely be needed down here, I didn't question it so I just decided to stay down here."

Will was shovelling food into his mouth barbarically. He swallowed then wiped his mouth before saying anything, "Ahh, okay. I mean you are pretty useful down here I guess. Only broke the chariot three times. So, anyway, dad sent me an illegal vision while I took a nap," Will said playfully while doing jazz hands at the word illegal, "He told me to tell you to not be stupid and just accept your soulmate because he's been preparing this warning haiku ever since you guys visit Japan. He really wants to say it to your soulmate, he's getting impatient. Talking about soulmates, yours has been glancing over here so many times, he's making it obvious. Does he know?" he asked.

Apollonia shook her head again, "No, he doesn't and I'm hoping it stays that way... He's a Roman," she gave her brother a pointed look, "Don't even get me started on that trip, Willy. I was actually supposed to go alone to Japan because I was going to learn their fighting techniques from a master. He decided to crash my nice getaway saying he wanted to do some daddy-daughter bonding. Like as if we don't bond enough. Anyway, then once he learned about the haiku's— my trip became miserable." She massaged her temple just remembering the trip. She loves her dad, truly, but this trip was meant to be a getaway from the gods in general and he ruined it.

She and Will finished all their food around the same time most of the other campers did. So, they started to make their way over to the bonfire to get ready for the sign-a-longs.

What Apollonia didn't know was that her life was gonna change... tonight.
