best friends brother

yes, this is based of Victoria Justice's song. shut up. yes, i jam to it.

      Y/N POV

Lying on Julie's bed with my feet propped above the headboard and my back on the mattress, I lazily scrolled on my phone as she sat at her desk, doing the same on her laptop.

"So, why do I need to know these words for Bio?" She sighed, spinning around in her chair. I looked up, her figure upside down.

"Because we have the quiz on Monday?" I reminded her, an eyebrow raised.

"Yeah, but like- when the hell am I ever going to use the word 'endoplasmic reticulum' in my life?" Julie scoffed. I chuckled, shrugging.

"You're going to use it Monday." I joked, rolling onto my stomach as I leaned on my elbows to look at her. She let out a loud groan, throwing her head back as she gazed back to the list.

   "Abiogenesis?" She snarled.  "Seriously?"

"Studying vocabulary would not have been a problem today if you had studied with me Wednesday!" I pointed to her. Julie narrowed her eyes at me, before shaking her head.

"Look, it was let my mom take me to the mall or learn about homeostasis with you." She shrugged. "My procrastination chose the former."

"Well, can procrastination help me decide whether I want to actually get up for more water." I laughed, taking my empty glass off the table. Julie turned to me, holding her hand out.

"I'll go do it." She offered. I laughed.

"And take you away from your education? I would never." I smirked, standing up. She pretended to cry as I walked out of her room. I let the smile grow at her unwillingness to learn as I stepped to the stairs. I looked over to the living room from the first steps to check if her brother, Dylan, was in. Thank goodness, he wasn't. I could actually get water without sweating in nervousness.

I skipped the rest of the way, bounding into the kitchen towards the fridge. The dispenser in the fridge door lit up with ice options and the water spout. I clicked my cup under it and watched as it poured into my cup. A door creaking open snatched my attention, making me spin my head, seeing Dylan jog out of the garage, drumsticks in one hand.

"Oh, hey Y/N." He grinned, waving the hand with the drumsticks as he let go of the door, shutting it. I smiled, barely speaking.

  "Hey." I nodded.

"Julie still studying?" He asked, quirking an eyebrow. I chuckled.

"If you can call it that."

He laughed lightly, but it was still amazingly attractive. His eyes rested on me, smile still resting.

"Got enough water?" He laughed. I was confused before I felt my hand become drenched and when I looked the cup was overflowing. I hissed and pulled away, the water turning off and the water draining down into the basin. I laughed, shrugging my shoulders embarrassingly.

"Wow, oh. Sorry, about that." I awkwardly laughed, looking to him. He laughed along, waving it off. Probably so I wouldn't crawl under a rock in fear making an utter fool of myself.

"Don't worry." Dylan smiled, but it almost turned to a smirk. "You're still cute, even when your hands dripping in water."

I froze, still looking to him. The comment hadn't bothered him at all. Dylan carried on like it was normal conversation. He grabbed the bag of chips off the counter, raising them as he reopened the door.

"Just came to get something for the guys. Catch you later." He smiled, before disappearing into the garage. I nodded, even though the door was closed now. I shook my head, snapping out of it as I carefully made my way up the stairs with the entirely too full cup of water. I took a deep breath and re-entered Julie's room.

"What, did you give water to the entire front yard? What took so long?" Julie slightly laughed, but was still seriously wondering.

"Uh, your brother. He came into the kitchen." I pointed behind me. She grunted.

"He didn't say anything dumb, did he?" She asked. I licked my lips, shaking my head.

"No, no. Actually he, uh, he called me cute." I let out a laugh, trying to make it seem like I thought it was weird. Well, it was.

  Weirdly amazing.

"Oh, gross." She grumbled. "Man, can you even imagine dating my brother? How disgusting would that be?"

I gave a small chuckle, nodding my head. "Yeah, gross."

"Hey, speaking of family-" Julie returned to her normal self. "We're having burgers tonight. Would you wanna stay over? You could even stay the night?"

I nodded quickly. "Yeah, I love burgers."

And your brother. But you don't know that.

"Great!" She smile, shutting her computer. "Since it's Saturday, you could even just stay Sunday morning. My parents don't mind. They love you."

I grinned and clapped excitedly, not really because her parents adored me, but because that was more time in the O'Brien house. Dylan's house.

Sitting around the dinner table with the O'Brien family, there was never a silence. Stories about their day, jokes they told, compliments of the food, you name it. I always loved eating with them.

"So, Dyl-" Julie started, putting down her fork after she finished chewing her corn. "Any new songs?"

"Today, actually." He nodded, wiping his mouth with the napkin, before tossing it to the table.

"What's it about?" His mom smiled.

"Uh, this guy who likes a girl but he can't be with her so he just dreams about being with her." Dylan nodded.

"Wow, you'd think with your band money, you could buy some originality." Julie laughed, sipping her sweet tea. Dylan's mouth dropped comically, before he rolled his eyes.

"You two. . ." Their dad shook his head, rolling his own eyes.

"What?" Julie shrugged. "Dylan started it with his love-sick song. Who's is about anyway?"

"No one." Dylan quickly shrugged. "Just- something we thought could relate to people."

Julie hummed, not really taking his answer.

My hand scrubbed the sponge on the plate, cleaning dinner's remains while Dylan dried next to me. Julie's mom made her leave us to dishes, making her do laundry. She groaned but left anyway.

  That was ten minutes ago.

Ten minutes of white noise, the running water the only thing keeping our ears tuned. I only ever moved to hand Dylan the next dish, my wet fingers warmly meeting his dry ones for barely a second.

"I heard you're sleeping over tonight." Dylan spoke, glancing away from the rag for a moment. I nodded.

"Yeah. Julie thought it would be fun." I shrugged. "Why? Want me out of the house?"

Dylan chuckled, shaking his head. "No, of course not. I actually enjoy your company."

"You wouldn't rather hang with your band?" I smirked, pouring more soap onto the sponge.

"You can only stand six guys for so long." He laughed, before taking the plate that I handed him.

"Speaking of your band, that song-" I mused. "You guys, really just thought about it?"

"Uh. . . " Dylan hummed, before nodding. "Yeah, yup."

"What's the last line you wrote for it?" I asked.

"Uh, right now-" He thought. "We've gotten to- 'I lay here as adventure waves, but I'd rather lay all day and think of you'."

  "Aw." I smiled. "Lucky girl."

"I wish." Dylan chuckled. "There's no way I could date her."

"Ha!" I grinned, pointing a finger, lined with bubbles from the soap. "So it is about someone."

Dylan froze, his mouth dropping open and closed as he tried to find an explanation. He finally relaxed, sighing as he gave up.

   "Fine. Yeah, it is."

I smiled, returning to the dish with hopes and dreams to be the subject of the song. "What's she like?"

Dylan's face instantly soothed as he thought, smiling as he stared to the white plate. "She's- sweet. Adorable. Funny. I mean- she's not perfect, obviously. But, even her flaws are just- they aren't really flaws. Their just- un-formalities. Also, quite single at the moment."

I raised my eyebrows, nodding. "She sounds great. If she's single, I don't get why you can't date her."

"It's not that, exactly." He eased, holding something back, obviously. "I just can't."

"If you want anything that badly, you should just go for it." I shrugged, before chuckling. "Ironic coming from me, the girl who would never in a million years do something on impulse."

Dylan chuckled. "Not so sure I'd be able to either."

"Well, don't think like that, then." I shrugged. "Think, you're Dylan O'Brien. The drummer boy, the brunette babe, the- I don't know. But, you get what I mean."

"Brunette babe, huh?" He teased. I scoffed and threw bubbles, rolling my eyes.

"I give you an inspirational speech and you catch that?" I raised my eyebrows. He shrugged, putting down the rag.

"I do get it, though." He nodded, seriously. "Confidence. Think you can and you will."

"Exactly. Think like you can get this girl, and you will. Probably. Results may vary." I shrugged, jokingly. He smiled and looked down to the floor, nodding slowly.

"You get wiser with the years, Y/N." Dylan nodded. "You're like- an inspiration superhero."

"Ah, yes." I chuckled, turning to him. "My nickname would be, what- Wise Old Man?"

Dylan shook his head. "No, I was thinking My Girlfriend."

I froze, my eyes locked with his brown ones. I had to blink to cure my burning eyes, trying to snap myself out of the dream that just happened. The dream, right? That's what it was?

 "I'm confused." I breathed out.

"A- about what?" Dylan awkwardly asked.

"Are you being serious? Like, actually serious?" I carefully asked. Dylan nervously laughed, nodding.

"Actually serious." He spoke, licking his lips. I looked to him, unsure.

  "I-Are you sure?" I continued.

"I mean, I was sure." Dylan freaked. "I was confident. And- and now, you're asking questions and I'm getting nervous, because you're talking like you're weirded out and don't like me back-"

"No." I shook my head. "I- I do. I really, really do."

"Really?" Dylan relaxed, a smile growing on his face.

"Really." I nodded, kind of embarrassed at how many really's were going on in my head.

"Good." Dylan spoke, smirking. "I can finally do this."

My hands were grabbed by his, yanking me over to him. Our chests bumped and when I looked to him in surprise, his lips lowered to mine. My eyes shot open at what was happening, before I instantly relaxed when his lips began moving. I hummed in pleasure, taking my soapy-wet hands and placing them on the back of his neck, tilting my head. Dylan let out a quiet moan in response, dragging his hands up my arms, before dropping to my waist gently. His thumbs rubbed small circles to my hip bones, making me sigh involuntarily.

Dylan pulled away, softly breathing as he regained oxygen. I did the same, but couldn't smiling. I bit my bottom lip to contain it.

"I've thought about that so many times." Dylan whispered, his forehead resting on mine. I shut my eyes, nodding barely.

"Oh, and the song is  about you." He spoke. I chuckled and pulled away, his eyes opening to mine.

"I would hope so, or this relationship was going to start on a horrible note." I laughed. He chuckled, nodding.

Dylan sighed, shaking his head slowly. "Julie's not gonna like this."

"Is that why you couldn't date me?" I asked. He chewed the inside of his cheek, nodding.

"Me too." I nodded. "Told me today, 'man, how gross would that be'."

"Should we tell her?" Dylan raised his eyebrows.

   "I think so."

My eyes widened and Dylan spun around, facing the doorway like I was. Julie had her arms crossed and an eyebrow raised. I dropped my hands and Dylan quickly retracted his, placing them behind his back.

"Julie-" I tried. She raised her hand, stopping me.

"Just- don't. I get that you two are disgustingly infatuated with each other. I just-" She groaned. "Not while I'm around? I really don't want to see my brother making out with someone."

 I laughed and nodded. "Deal."
