You and Me | Josh Dun

Prompt #30
Requested by @sycudhdohp

Summary: You're both bored, so you go over to Josh's.

QOTP: Which High School Musical character are you?

Word Count: 1491

"'Make an ice cream sundae and we'll tell you when you'll meet your soulmate,'" you mumble to yourself, reading a title of a quiz on Buzzfeed. You click on it. "Sounds fun."

It's been an hour and a half since you started taking Buzzfeed quizzes, and you show no signs of stopping anytime soon.

Meanwhile, Josh Dun - your best friend - is laying on his couch, bored out of his mind. He was watching Netflix, but he just finished a show and now has nothing else to watch.

He debates whether he should call you or not; it's midnight and you might be asleep. Then again, he knows you don't work tomorrow, so you might not be...

He mulls it over for a while, then decides to risk it, even if you will be mad at him if he wakes you up. You're the only person he wants to talk to right now, and if he can get you to leave the house - even just to come to his and lay on the couch in silence - he won't be bored anymore.

The phone doesn't ring for long.

"Josh?" you say, slightly annoyed. You were choosing your perfect panini ingredients to determine which Josh Groban song you should listen to. However, it's Josh (Dun), so you have to answer.

"Hey," he says, smiling. It's like magic; he's instantly not bored anymore. "Whatcha doin'?"

You sigh. "I have been taking Buzzfeed quizzes for the past two hours, and, normally, I'd say that wasn't a valuable use of my time. However, I now know what High School Musical character I am and where I'm gonna live when I get older - Sharpay and a shack in the woods."

He laughs. "Seriously?"

You shrug even though he can't see you. "I was bored."

He sighs. "Well, that makes two of us. That's why I called you."

"I'm guessing Tyler wasn't answering?" you joke.

"No; you were the first person I called." The sincerity in his voice makes you pause, and before you can recover and tease him, he continues. "I was wondering if you wanted to come over?"

"To do what?" you ask, standing and starting to gather your things - phone, charger, headphones - because you already know you're going over there. You just want to know why.

"I dunno," Josh replies. "I'm just bored. Literally anything than sitting here by myself would be fun."

"Alright, dorkwad," you say, heading out to your car. "I'm leaving now. See you in a bit."

As soon as you pull into Josh's driveway, his front door swings open, the man in question standing there, squinting.

You turn your car off, grab your stuff, and get out with a flourish and bow. "I have arrived," you announce quieter than normal; his neighbors are all asleep. Josh laughs and lets you inside, where you promptly flop down on the couch. "So, what's the game plan?"

Josh quirks an eyebrow. "What?"

"What are we doin'?" you ask. Josh shrugs, so you sigh and grab your phone. "Well, if you don't have anything in mind, I'm going to resume my Buzzfeed-quiz-taking."

Josh laughs and sits down next to you. "Sounds interesting."

You scroll for a bit, then stop to tap on something, and hand your phone Josh. "Take this one."

"'Make an ice cream sundae and we'll tell you when you'll meet your soulmate,'" Josh reads. "Seriously?"

"I did it earlier; I wanna know when you're gonna meet yours."

It takes him about five minutes, mostly because you're criticizing some of his choices from over his shoulder. Eventually, though, he gets his answer: 'You've already met them!'

You laugh. "That's what I got, too."

He glances over at you, thinking.

It's a stupid Buzzfeed quiz. It doesn't mean anything, obviously, and it's irrational for him to even consider...

"Earth to Josh," you say, snapping your fingers in front of his face. "Hello? Do you come in peace?"

He starts. "What?"

You frown. "You didn't laugh. You always laugh at my dumb jokes... Are you okay?"

He hands your phone back to you. "I'm fine... It's just late."

You turn your phone off and set it down beside you on the couch. "Mhmm. Sure. You don't wanna tell me? Fine. Even though you know you can tell me anything."

"I know."

"Let's watch a movie."

He chuckles at your abrupt change in topic. "What movie do you wanna watch?"

"Fire up Netflix! And then go make popcorn while I pick."

Josh stands, grabbing the remote off the coffee table. "Why do you get to pick?"

You cross your arms. "Because you're not telling me something that's bothering you."

"It's not... bothering me," he says, pulling up Netflix. "I was just... thinking. 'What if' stuff."

"What kind of 'what if' stuff?" you ask. "Aliens? Our whole existence possibly being a simulation?"

Josh laughs, heading to the kitchen. "Much... smaller than that."

"Small how?"

"Not whole world stuff... Me stuff, I guess. Personal stuff."

You frown, but he can't see you from the kitchen. It takes you a second to form a response. "Nothing... bad, right?"

He can hear the worry in your voice and his heart melts as he simultaneously feels guilty for making you worry about him. "No. Nothing like that. Good stuff."

You relax, flipping through Netflix's movie selection. It doesn't take you long to decide. When Josh comes back, popcorn in hand, he sees you've picked Atlantis. You look up at him. "Romantic or what?" you joke.

He blushes, though you don't notice, and goes to sit down next to you. You reach up and take some popcorn before he's even settled, so he just hands you the whole bowl. "You're ridiculous."

"I try."

He grabs a blanket off the back of the couch as you press play. Then, you hold the bowl up so he can put the blanket over you because obviously you're not gonna do that yourself.

You nestle the bowl in your lap and lay your head on his shoulder. Josh, hoping you don't notice how fast his heart is beating, says, "I can't believe I'm watching Atlantis for the fourth time this week."

"Hey, we could be watching Human Centipede. Be happy."

Josh laughs. "You hate the very idea of Human Centipede."

"Yeah, but it exists, so, theoretically, we could be watching it."

"You get annoying after midnight."

You snort. "Again, I try."

At some point during the movie, Josh manages to talk himself into wrapping his arm around you. You don't say anything; just scoot closer to him, still shoveling popcorn into your mouth.

Towards the end, the popcorn is gone and you're both falling asleep, fighting to keep your eyes open. You look up at Josh. "Tell me a joke."

He starts. "What?"

"I'm about to fall asleep, and sleep is for the weak, so tell me a joke."

He tries to think of one, but thinks too long; he starts falling asleep again. You lightly hit him in the chest. He jumps a little, then sighs. "I can't think of anything; you're the funny one."

You chuckle, lazily turning to face him, your arm draping across his stomach. "Thanks."

His breath hitches, waking him up a little. "Y-You're welcome."

You don't notice his nervous stutter, laying your head on his chest. "You ever gonna tell me what you were thinking about earlier?"

He hesitates, then realizes you're half-asleep. You'll probably be out by the time he answers anyway. Still, he says it quietly. "You."

You chuckle a little; everything seems funny. "What about me?"

"You and me," he says nervously.

"What'd'ya mean?"

"Like, you and me."

You stop and sit up. "You and me?

Meanwhile, Josh is thinking, 'Crap, crap, crap, crap, crap, crap.' He hesitates, trying to think of something to say. "Uh, just, uh, forget I said anything. I'm just tired-"

"I think about you and me sometimes, too."

He stops, looking at you, trying to figure out whether you're just saying things because you're exhausted or what. Your eyes are slightly droopy, but you look more awake than before. "Are... Are you high?"

"No," you say. "I'm not drunk, either. Just... really needed to tell you that. Been wanting to for a long time..."

"... Me, too."

You both smile, and after a few moments, you ask, "So... what are we gonna do about this?"

"What do you want to do?" Josh asks.

You sigh. "Josh, we're not discussing where we're going out to eat-"

"We could."

You stop. "Are you high?"

He chuckles. "No. I mean, we could discuss where we're going out to eat tomorrow night. On our date."

You nearly blanch, and take a second to recover. "That was the smoothest thing you've ever said to me."

Josh smiles. "I try."
