QOTP: Who do you ship Fred with?
Word Count: 2501
Your fifth year at Hogwarts - two other schools are here to compete in a death tournament where the competitors are chosen by a magic goblet, and you really don't wanna write that essay for Snape. A normal year, really.
It gets even more normal when you're knocked down by a running boy with ginger hair, another ginger boy having run by a second before. He's already gone, but the boy that knocked you over runs back and helps you up. "So sorry. I'll make it up to you later; I'm running from Filch right now." Then, he takes off again, racing around the corridor calling, "George! Wait up!"
Ginger, George, and running away from Filch, you think. The Weasley twins.
////
The next day, you're sitting peacefully at breakfast when you feel a tap on your shoulder. You turn, finding the boy from yesterday standing behind you. "Fred Weasley?" you ask. "Here to 'make it up to me'?"
His brows furrow. "How did you know it was me and not George?"
"Just guessed."
He chuckles. "Well, anyway, I figured out a way to make it up to you. Tomorrow at lunch, I'll come find you."
You look at him suspiciously. "Alright... Name's Y/N Y/L/N, by the way."
He grins. "I'll see you tomorrow, Y/N."
////
The next day at lunch, you impatiently wait for Fred to come find you; you're curious as to what he's going to do.
Finally, he taps on your shoulder. You turn and find him with his brother, George. "Watch this," he says, pointing to McGonagall, whose making her way to the staff table. George runs over to her, and you and Fred watch and listen.
"Hello, Maggie. Lovely afternoon, isn't it?" George asks politely.
McGonagall stops walking and looks at him with a raised eyebrow. "What do you want, Mr. Weasley?"
George pretends to be nervous, shuffling his feet and looking at the floor. "Well, the Yule Ball is coming up and I was wondering if you'd go with me?"
Before she can respond, Fred shows up, feigning anger. You glance behind you, having not noticed him leave, and turn back around quick when you hear him shout, "YOU KNOW HOW I FEEL, HOW COULD YOU?!"
McGonagall looks taken aback, also having not noticed Fred due to the shock of being asked out by George, who is "fuming". "I TOLD YOU I WAS GOING TO ASK HER!"
"AND I TOLD YOU I WAS GOING TO ASK HER!"
George takes a step toward Fred, crossing his arms. "I ASKED FIRST, I GET TO TAKE HER TO THE BALL!"
"NO, YOU DON'T!" Fred retorts, also crossing his arms. You and many others are laughing through all of it, while McGonagall is trying to hold back a laugh of her own.
George suddenly turns to McGonagall. "Maggie, you choose. Me or Fred?"
McGonagall looks at him, her expression as serious as you've ever seen it. "Don't call me 'Maggie', Mr. Weasley."
George goes to say something, but Fred holds his hand out. "Alright, fine. You asked first, you can take her. However, I don't plan on going alone."
George grins and plays along, even though he knows where this is going. "And who are you going to ask, Fred?"
Fred pulls out his wand and says, "Accio flowers," while pointing at a bouquet in a vase on a nearby table. He grins. "I'll need these first." Then, he walks over to you and holds out said flowers. "Y/N Y/L/N, would you accompany me to the Yule Ball?"
You laugh and take the flowers, blushing. "I'd love to."

After getting ready, Fred meets you outside your common room and holds an arm out, so you hook yours around it, and he begins to lead you to the great hall.
"You look very lovely this evening," he says, and even though the cheesiness of it all is a joke, you can tell he's sincere when he says this.
You smile. "You don't look too bad yourself."
"I clean up nice, don't I?" he asks as you enter the Great Hall. You laugh.
"I wouldn't expect anything less."
The dancing hasn't started yet because the Triwizard Tournament contestants are supposed to have the first dance, so he leads you to the food table instead. McGonagall is standing behind it, keeping a watchful eye over the students. Fred smiles at her. "Where's George? I thought he was taking you."
McGonagall fights off a smile. "I told Mr. Weasley that I already had a date."
"Who?"
"Myself."
Fred grins. "Well, that's as good a date as any, though I'd say I have the best date at the whole Ball."
You blush and McGonagall allows herself a smile. "Keep that up, Mr. Weasley, and there might be hope for you yet."
After that, he spots George across the room with Angelina Johnson and you go talk to them for a bit until the time comes for the contestants to open with dancing. Harry Potter dances with Parvati Patil, Cedric with Cho, Viktor Krum with Hermione Granger, and Fleur Delacour with Roger Davies.
Then, it's time for everyone else to dance.
You expect Fred to use the cheesy, "May I have this dance?" line, which would keep up with the theme of the date so far, but he doesn't. Instead, he looks at the crowd nervously, then back at you. "Do you wanna dance?"
"Sure," you reply, but he doesn't move to walk out onto the dance floor. Your brows furrow. "What's wrong?"
He smiles sheepishly. "Well, um, I didn't pay attention when they were giving us all dance lessons and, uh, I don't know how..."
You smile and take his hand. "Lucky for you, I did pay attention." With that, you lead him into the dance floor. He looks at the other couples and mimics them - his hand on your waist and the other holding your hand. You put your free hand on his shoulder. "I'll lead until you get the hang of it."
It takes him an entire song, in which he steps on your feet three times, but he starts to get it. "I'll lead this time."
It goes okay, save the fact that you keep bumping into the people around you. You look around for a more spacious spot on the floor and spot lights outside of the castle on the front lawn. You grab his hand. "Come on."
Outside, there are hundreds of little fairies in the rosebushes and over a statue of Father Christmas and his reindeer. No one else is out there, but you can still hear the music. Fred looks around. "We should've been dancing here from the start. Would've saved me some nasty looks."
Yours weren't the only feet he stepped on...
You dance out there for a few songs, and your dancing isn't particularly pretty, but it's good enough for you. You laugh as Fred nearly trips over his own feet. "Ar-Are you okay?"
"I'm fine," he says, unable to keep a smile off his face. "I'm just really bad at dancing."
"I noticed."
"Hey!"
"You said it, not me!"
He laughs, grabbing your hands. "I'm not the worst in the world."
"I wouldn't count on that." As he feigns offense, you laugh again. "You're the most entertaining dancer in the world."
"Fine," he says. "I'll take whatever I can get." Your laughter dies down, but you're still holding hands. He smiles. "You know, I'm really glad I bumped into you."
You blush, looking down. "I'm glad, too." When you look back up at him, he's already looking at you, seemingly frozen in place.
"I... Can I... kiss you?" he asks quietly.
You lean in towards him, your lips just barely brushing. "Yeah..."
And so, he does.

In sixth year, quite a few things happened. Harry, Ron, Fred, and George managed to get banned from Quidditch for life after Ron "attacked" Draco after a match.
Harry started teaching a secret Defensive Against the Dark Arts class, which you joined. You were frequently paired up with Fred, leaving George with Lee or Angelina Johnson, the latter being his partner more often.
The main thing, though, was Fred and George's early departure. They told you, of course, and you decided to leave with them. However, you're not exactly leaving when they do.
In the middle of study hall in the Great Hall, there's two loud knocks on the doors. Umbridge goes to answer them angrily. When she opens them, it appears as if there's nothing there. She looks around for a moment, confused. And then a spark flies out of nowhere, right up to her. It's crackling and flying around her head. She can only watch as it zooms into the Great Hall behind her and bursts into a large, blue firework.
She turns back around, looking for the source, then Fred and George fly down the corridor on their brooms and into the Great Hall, hollering and laughing. They use their wands to send everyone's papers flying around and you grin, watching them.
They set off more fireworks as everyone cheers and laughs. Umbridge can only look on in horror as the Great Hall practically explodes with fireworks, different colored sparks raining down like snowflakes.
All the students are standing now, running around and looking for Fred and George above all the pandemonium they're causing. Umbridge hurries through to try to stop them, then Filch runs in, angry yet confused.
Fred flies down next to you, kisses you for a few seconds, then back up again to set off a huge firework that takes the shape of a dragon and chases after Umbridge as she runs away, out of the Great Hall where it "eats" her and explodes into dozens of tinier fireworks that knock her "Educational Decrees" off the wall. Then, the twins fly out of the Great Hall and out of the castle and the students follow as they set off a final firework in the shape of a W.
And they never return.
At least, George never does.
That night, Fred flies back and sneaks into the castle through the owlery, which you snuck up to after your dormmates went to sleep.
"That was quite the spectacle today," you say when you see him.
He grins. "We could've used more fireworks, but I'd say it went rather well."
You laugh and he helps you onto his broom. He wraps his arms around you, grabs the broom handle, and you shoot off into the night towards the Weasley home, where George is still getting lectured by Molly.
The next morning, the girls in your dorm wake up to a person-shaped hole in the wall and a sign that says, "Gone Fishing! (Back... Never!)" hanging on your bed post.
Little did you know, you would be back.

"I'm gonna stay in the Great Hall to help heal people," you say to Fred. The Death Eaters and You-Know-Who are coming, and the entire Weasley family (save Arthur and Molly) is going out to fight them.
Fred pulls you to him and kisses you until you're both out of breath. "Be careful."
"I should be the one saying that to you." He smiles a little at that, then goes to join George. You stop him, grabbing his hand. "... I don't wanna loose you."
"You won't."
"Promise me."
"Y/N-"
"Please, Fred," you plead. "Promise me."
He nods once. "I promise."
After the first wave of fighting, they carried him into the Great Hall and you ran to him. George is already sobbing, but you're completely in denial, frantically trying to save him somehow.
"He's gone, Y/N," Harry quietly says behind you. You pretend as though you don't hear him, but you can only do that for so long.
He's dead.
Fred Weasley is dead.
"You promised me," you whisper, lightly shaking him as the Weasley family stands on his other side, weeping, George most of all. You can only sit next to him, holding his hand, as Bill and Charlie lead their parents away, Percy goes to cry in the corner, Ron goes to Hermione, and Ginny to Harry.
It's just you, George, and Fred on the ground in between you. After some silence, George looks behind you at the wounded wizards currently being healed. "They probably need you over there," he says quietly. You don't reply, but you know he's right.
Any time you'd leave Fred to go anywhere, you'd kiss him goodbye first. Even if you were just going to the next room. You can't bear to leave him without kissing him goodbye, so you lean down and press your lips to his for a few seconds.
George notices the odd expression on your face when you pull away. "What's wrong?"
You continue to look down at Fred, whose still not moving. "I-I swear I felt something... and his lips were warm..."
George shakes his head, almost angry. "You're just imagining it. I saw him die, Y/N. There was an explosion-"
You ignore him and kiss Fred again, sure you felt him kiss back. After a few seconds, you feel nothing, but you wait for just a little longer. Just in case...
Nothing happens.
But then he kisses back.
You pull away instantly, shocked. "He kissed back! I swear he did, George! He's alive!"
"Are you sure?!" Bill asks, having heard your shouts from across the room. The entire Weasley family and Harry and Hermione are looking at the shocked smile on your face.
"He's alive!" you say. "He's alive!"
"He's still dying," Madam Pomfrey says, rushing over to help heal him. After she casts a few spells, Fred's eyes shoot open.
"Y/N?" he whispers, looking around. "Percy? George?" Everyone rushes over to him, all talking at once until Madam Pomfrey shushes them.
He's alive.

A week later, you're in St. Mungo's, sitting next to Fred, whose in a hospital bed. You made the Weasleys go home for a few hours to sleep; they've been there since the battle ended.
"This jello is awful," Fred complains, handing the cup back to you.
You chuckle, throwing it away. "At least you're alive to eat it."
He makes a disgusted face. "I'm not sure I want to be."
You sit back and grab his hand. "I'm not kidding, Fred. I almost lost you. Everyone almost lost you. We thought you were dead."
"I was," he says, laying back against the pillows. "But then I remembered I promised you that you wouldn't lose me. And I always keep my promises."
You smile. "Can you promise to stop complaining about the jello?"
"Oh, Merlin's beard, no. I can come back from the dead, but certainly not that."
