Pretty Girls and Movie Quotes | Peter Parker
This was originally gonna be really sad, so you're welcome. (I could do part two, though...)
Summary: You move to Queens and meet Peter Parker.
QOTP: What's your favorite movie quote?
Word Count: 4551
"No, I'm not going to crawl on the ceiling, Ned."
It was a strange statement that caused you to stop walking and look down the hallway towards the speaker. Two boys were entering an apartment two doors down from yours, backpacks on their backs.
The boy with brown hair, who instantly caught your eye, unlocked the door and they went inside.
"Well, he was cute." You turn and find your mom smirking at you.
You sigh. "Sure. I guess."
"Oh, come on," she replies, nudging you gently with the box she's carrying. "You're just upset because I told you so."
"Just because one of our neighbors is cute doesn't mean that I'm gonna like it here," you say, heading into your new apartment and setting down the box you had in your hands.
////
"Bye, mom," you say for the umpteenth time.
She starts to follow you out, adjusting your backpack on your shoulders as you go. "Are you sure you don't want me to walk with you? Just for today?"
"I remember the route from yesterday, Mom. I'll be fine." You started school yesterday and she had to go with you considering it was your first day.
Today, you're determined to go alone.
But that apparently won't be happening.
When you reach the ground floor, you notice someone familiar also exiting the building.
Cute Neighbor Boy walks to school, too, and you noticed yesterday that he was in two of your classes. You speed up a little to catch up with him. Weird as he may be, you forgot exactly how to get to Midtown High.
And he's cute.
"Hi," you say, a little quieter than you intended.
He turns, seemingly unfazed by your sudden introduction, which would've scared the bajeebees out of anybody else. His head tilts to the side a little, kind of like a confused puppy's would. "Hi... Have we met?"
"No, not formally," you reply, trying to fight down the blush on your cheeks and actually look at him like a normal person would in conversation. "We have a couple classes together. I'm, uh, new."
"Oh, yeah!" he says. "Y/N, right?"
"Yeah."
"I'm Peter."
After a short pause, you clear your throat a little; this interaction is starting to get real awkward real fast. "Well, uh, I kind noticed we're neighbors, and I can't exactly remember where I'm going..."
Peter's brows raise in genuine interest. "We're neighbors? That's a cool coincidence. And don't worry about getting lost or whatever. We can walk together." You blush, fully aware that he's just being nice but really wanting to read into it more. He takes your lack of reply as a bad sign. "Sorry," he says, "I get nervous talking to pretty girls." You blush even harder, literally unable to form a reply, which he also takes as a bad sign. "Sorry," he repeats, genuine this time. "I've heard it in a couple movies, just finally got the opportunity to use it in real life."
You laugh. "It's okay. Thanks."
He chuckles, looking down at the ground, then back up at you. "I should leave it to the professionals, though, right?"
You mock-grimace. "Yeah, you probably should leave that to The Office."
He laughs. "That was on The Office? I don't even remember what episode that was in."
You snort lightly. "I don't either but I distinctly remember Kevin saying that at some point."
And thus, the ice was broken.
////
When you make it into school, you find your locker and stop in front of it. Peter starts heading further down the hallway. "See you in... first period?"
You smile and nod once in confirmation. "Yep. First period."
He smiles and waves a little, going a couple feet more down the hallway where he stops in front of the other boy you saw walking into his apartment. Peter called him Ned, didn't he...?
"Y/N," Peter says about a minute later, walking up to you with Ned on his heels. Peter steps to the side a little and gestures as if presenting Ned like an artifact in a museum. "This is my friend Ned. Ned, this is Y/N."
You pretend like you didn't already know his name and that he told and/or asked Peter to crawl on the ceiling for some reason, although you do have questions.
Before anyone can say anything else, another voice joins the conversation. "Hey, losers."
"Hi, Michelle," Peter replies.
"Hey, Michelle," Ned says.
Michelle looks over at you and blatantly asks, "Aren't you the new kid?"
"Yeah," you reply, shrugging a little and glancing at Peter and Ned, who are just watching this exchange like a movie.
"Well, I see you've already met the losers," she says, tilting her head toward Peter and Ned. Based on their reactions the first time and this time, you assume her calling them that is normal and they don't particularly care.
"Yeah, I have," you reply, not knowing what else to say.
Ned sighs. "You've only known me for five seconds, but okay."
Peter and Michelle laugh, though Michelle laughs more under her breath. You turn to Ned. "Oh, no, you're not a loser. Peter is, though."
Peter feigns offense. "How could you say that?"
"You accidentally quoted The Office at me this morning," you reply.
He shrugs a little. "Fair enough."
Ned starts to pester Peter about what happened, but then the bell rings and Peter offers to walk you to class. Michelle and Ned take off in two different directions, Peter telling Michelle he'll see her in second period. She only grunts in response.
////
You had second period with a girl named Betty Brant who actually talked to you, then third with Ned, to your surprise. Fourth you had class with Michelle, who made minimal conversation, but the silence wasn't awkward, so you didn't mind it much.
Then, you went to lunch.
Michelle had taken off, so you weren't sure where Peter and Ned sat, but you found them pretty easily.
"Hey, Y/N," Peter says when you approach, a smile on his face.
You sit down across from them. "Hey, Peter. Hey, Ned."
"Hi, Y/N," Ned replies.
"Where's Michelle?" you ask, seeing as she's not at the table.
"She usually swings by here around second half," Peter says, immediately shoving a sandwich in his mouth afterward.
You laugh a little. "Good to know, Kevin."
Ned gives you a confused look, so you go to explain, but Peter shakes his head frantically. You stop, waiting for him to swallow so he can speak. "Don't tell him. Please."
"Dude," Ned complains.
"It's embarrassing!"
"Peter, we're best friends. I've been there during your most embarrassing moments. And, trust me, you have a lot of them."
You laugh and Peter sighs. "Fine. I'll tell you later."
////
Fifth period was with Michelle and Ned, and sixth was with Betty again and a boy named Flash who asked you why you were friends with Penis Parker. It turned into a Philosopher's Stone moment - literally.
"You're new, and you're not ugly; you could be hanging out with the popular kids. You're picking the wrong friends."
"I think I can tell the wrong friends for myself, thanks."
He just scoffed and turned around. You're pretty sure he didn't recognize the quote.
You had no one in seventh period, but then, in eighth period, a miracle happened - you, Peter, Michelle, and Ned all had that class together.
You ended the day laughing and cracking jokes with your new friends.
Maybe your mom was right; you might be starting to like it here.
////
"Wanna walk home to together?" Peter asks, leaning against the locker next to yours, facing you.
Your heart just about skips a beat and you smile and try to be nonchalant. "Sure."
You say bye to Ned and Michelle and head out, silent at first, but Peter decides to speak when you reach the sidewalk. "So I did some Googling..."
When you realize he's not going to elaborate, you quirk an eyebrow. "And?"
"'Someone has to call God and tell Him that an angel is missing.'"
You stop, then realize he's quoting something, so you play it off with a dry laugh. "What's that from? Parks and Rec?"
Peter laughs. "A movie. Couples Retreat. Never seen it."
You shake your head. "Got any more, Casanova?"
He chuckles. "I'm working on it."
////
You say bye to Peter and unlock the door to your new apartment, eat, then go to start your homework; you have a lot of it considering you started in the middle of the year.
You quickly realize you don't understand any of it.
"Crap," you mutter.
Your mom is at work, and you could call one your friends back home (your old home), but you know for a fact they haven't done this yet because you haven't either.
You could Google it, but you'll just get the answers and that's cheating...
You have only one option.
And it's a great one.
////
Peter's just about to heat up some leftovers when there's a knock on the door. When it turns out to be you, Peter smiles, although he's confused. "Hello, again."
"Hi," you say sheepishly. "So, here's the thing: I have no idea how to do my homework. Like, I am totally lost."
He laughs lightly and opens the door wider. "Come on in. What's the subject?"
"All of them."
He laughs again, offers you food, which you refuse, then starts helping you through mouthfuls of lasagna.
About an hour later, in which he also finishes his homework, you start to head home.
"Thanks, Peter."
"No problem," he says. Then, there's a pause. "Um, maybe we should, uh, exchange numbers - in case you ever need homework help again..."
You blush and smile. "That sounds like a good idea."
After you exchange numbers, you go to leave, but Peter stops you. "Oh, by the way, Ned told about what you said to Flash."
You stop, blushing. "How'd he know about that?"
"People started talking about it. I mean, when the new girl roasts one of the popular kids with a Harry Potter quote, news is gonna spread."
You shrug. "I just said the first thing that came to mind."
Peter chuckles. "Thanks, Y/N."
"You just helped me with a buttload of homework. We'll call it even."
////
That night, after she came home from work, your mom asked about "Cute Neighbor Boy", as you had taken to calling him that before you knew his name. You told her his name was Peter and that you'd walked to and from school together, you have classes with him, he helped you with homework, and you got his number.
"Wow," she said. "All that in one day?"
You shrugged. "I mean, yeah, I guess." She didn't even know about the movie quote pick-up lines.
That was two weeks ago. Since then, you've hung out with Peter, Ned, and Michelle every weekday and once one Saturday when you all went to see Christopher Robin in theaters.
(You had talked about the movie and Peter enthusiastically suggested you all go together. Ned was also enthusiastic, but Michelle went begrudgingly. You could tell she secretly liked it, though.)
You and Peter hung out a lot considering you were neighbors, and Ned was at Peter's apartment a lot, so you ended up coming over sometimes and watching a movie or something.
You also texted each other quite a bit, sometimes about assignments, sometimes about movies, and sometimes about the cute puppies you saw people walking outside your window (one such text: PETER GO LOOK OUT YOUR WINDOW AT THIS DOGGO).
[Side Note: There are so many dogs in New York it's insane. I saw like twelve in one day. It was the best day of my life.]
All in all, everything was going great.
Until one Friday evening.
You just finished your homework and you're hungry, so you go to the kitchen to get something to eat.
Big mistake.
There's a huge spider just chilling on your countertop that strikes fear in your heart the moment you lay eyes on it.
What do you do? The fact of the matter is, you're too afraid to go near it and your mom's at work. But you can't just leave it sitting there...
////
Peter's brows furrow when his phone starts buzzing, telling him someone's calling. For a split second, he thinks it's May, but then he sees the caller ID.
"Pretty Girl."
You'd made that your contact name in his phone as a joke, but he had to admit that he thought it was true.
He thought his contact name in your phone would be "Kevin", but you put "Cottontail" instead; his name's Peter and there's a bunny named Peter Cottontail. Self explanatory.
He smiles to himself as he answers the phone. "Y/N? If you're calling, I'm assuming whatever dog this is about is the cutest dog you've ever seen."
"It's not," you reply simply.
The tone of your voice worries Peter and he leans forward a little, brows furrowing again, but this time in concern. "What's wrong?"
"This is gonna sound absolutely pathetic, but there's a spider in my kitchen, so could you please come kill with it fire?"
Peter sighs a little in relief, chuckling. "Alright, I'm coming."
You run to the door as soon as you hear him knock and open it quickly. "Hurry. Before it moves."
Peter just laughs lightly at you practically cowering in fear at a spider about as big as his thumbnail and the irony of the whole situation.
I'm Spiderman, so I can't kill it, he thinks. So, he turns to you. "Where do you keep your cups?"
"Cabinet on the far right."
He grabs a cup and a paper plate off the counter, puts the cup over the spider, slides it onto the paper plate, has you open a window, then releases the spider outside, into the wild. You close the window as fast as humanly possible, causing him to laugh. "I'm assuming you're terrified of Spiderman considering how tiny that thing was."
"Spiderman's not a spider," you argue, walking away from him and back into the kitchen, giving the spot the spider was in a wide berth.
"Oh, I'm sorry," Peter says sarcastically. "I wasn't aware that he'd changed his name to Wolfman."
You glare at him, half joking. "It's not funny. I was terrified."
"Oh, I know. It's just funny that you were terrified in the first place."
You shake your head, opening the fridge. "You're so mean. Got a movie quote for that, Cottontail?"
"Probably," he says, shrugging and pulling out his phone. After a few minutes, he says, "'You're being mean.' That's a quote from Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted."
You laugh. "I wasn't actually asking for a quote, dummy. But good to know."
"To quote Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted," he says, "'You're being mean.'" You snort, shaking your head, but don't reply and continue making yourself a snack. After a few more minutes, Peter says, "'Follow the spiders.'"
"What's that from?" you ask. "Lord of the Rings?"
"The Chamber of Secrets," he says, incredulous. "Who are you?"
"Someone that doesn't have an eidetic memory."
"Touché."
You turn back to look at him. "I thought you were just looking for pick-up line movie quotes."
"Well, if you're gonna be picky, give me a second." It doesn't take as long as when he was looking for spider quotes. "'Your eyes are amazing, do you know that? You should never shut them, not even at night.'"
There's two reasons he picked that quote; it was the first not-dirty one he found, and it was true - your eyes are amazing.
You don't pick up on the fact that he meant it, though. You haven't before, and you won't in the future, so why should you now?
He leaves after that, with a teasing, "Call me if you see anymore spiders."
You reply with, "Oh, I'm moving out. And going far, far away. That was nasty."
////
The next weekend, Saturday, you planned to have breakfast together - the four of you. So, you do.
[If you're lactose intolerant, just pretend you're not for this part.]
You order a milk to go with your pancakes, and Peter decides to seize this opportunity when you take a drink, saying, "'I see you're drinking 1%. Is that 'cause you think you're fat? 'Cause you're not. You could be drinking whole if you wanted to.'"
You laugh, the milk nearly coming out of your nose, causing everyone else to laugh, even if Ned and Michelle are pretty confused.
Once you regain your composure, you shake your head. "Napoleon Dynamite? You can do better than that."
"Well, you certainly found it funny," Peter replies.
Ned looks between the two of you. "What's going on here?"
Peter laughs. "Well, I'm kind of using movie quote pick-up lines on her to make up for that one from The Office."
"You guys are losers," Michelle says. It's the first time that she's called you a loser, and it makes you pretty happy.
She officially considers you her friend.
////
It's been months since you moved to Queens. And Peter's feelings have only grown.
He liked you from the beginning; that was why he'd said that stupid pick-up line on a whim in the first place. And after actually getting to know you, well, he liked you even more.
Ned knew because he told him, and Michelle knew because she said it was "obvious". Whether it was or not was uncertain, considering everyone was pretty sure you had no idea.
You liked him, too. The only person that sort of knew was your mom, who asked about him and usually got vague answers in terms of how you felt.
You were debating on telling Michelle; besides Peter, you were closest with her. After a few weeks, you started hanging out with just her on the premise that Peter and Ned were "being annoying" (which they were). Eventually, it was just a normal thing to see you and Michelle together.
It was also normal to see you and Peter together. So why not date?
Neither of you knew you liked each other, and you both feared rejection. Your typical, everyday, annoying occurrence.
The day you decide to tell Michelle, you make her promise not to tell Ned or Peter, which results in a phone call from Michelle to Peter on a Friday night, during which you're out of the room (at Michelle's house) and talking to your mom on the phone.
Meanwhile, Peter and Ned are building the Millennium Falcon out of Legos again and talking about Spiderman. They're interrupted by Peter's phone ringing
"Michelle?" Peter asks. Ned motions for him to put it on speaker, catching the last half of some sarcastic remark. Peter goes to respond to said sarcastic remark, but she stops him.
"Listen, you need to tell Y/N you like her because I am not dealing with this back and forth nonsense."
"What?" Peter asks, completely confused.
"Tell her."
"Michelle-"
"She made-" The phone hangs up abruptly, leaving Peter and Ned confused.
Peter quickly texts Michelle, Did you die? A few seconds later, she replies, No. Can't talk right now.
Then, another text. Tell her.
Then, another. Tomorrow. We're about to watch a crime documentary.
"Man, they're weird," Ned says, reading the text over Peter's shoulder.
They talk about the call and the texts, deciding that Michelle's sudden interest in Peter's feelings for you means that something happened. Whether she's intentionally setting him up for failure or not is also something to consider.
But Peter's gonna risk it.
Tomorrow.
////
After Ned leaves, he searches for a good movie quote, finds the one he wants, and memorizes it. He's finally ready about an hour after you get home.
Then, he starts doubting whether he should use a movie quote at all, or at least that one - the word 'love' may be too forward - but he ultimately convinces himself to go through with his original plan the second he knocks on your door.
You answer a few seconds later and see that it's him. "Hey," you reply, turning to go back inside, expecting him to follow and close the door behind him, as per usual when he came to your apartment for one reason or another (usually homework).
"Hey," he says after the door's shut, and his nervous tone concerns you. You stop and turn, looking at him and waiting for him to continue. "So, I came to talk to you..."
You sit on the arm of your couch and wait for him to elaborate, but he takes so long of a pause that you have to egg him on. "About?"
He nervously fidgets with his hands, looking at the floor. Then, he takes a deep breath and looks up at you. "'It cannot have escaped your notice that for some time past the friendship I have felt for you has ripened into a deeper feeling. A feeling more beautiful, more pure, more sacred. Dare I name it? Can it be love?'"
He doesn't say it in Clark Gable's teasing tone, and if he did, you probably would've responded with, "'I don't like your common jokes.'"
He's completely sincere. So, you can't fight the small smile that grows on your lips or the blush in your cheeks, but instead of saving him the small burst of panic and telling him you feel the same, you decide to be a bit sarcastic. You've just been hanging out with Michelle, after all.
"Are you quoting Gone With the Wind at me?" you ask teasingly.
He blushes, smiling and shrugging. "Ye-Yeah."
You smile wider and laugh a little. "Are you telling me you love me? Or like me? Or... what?"
Peter looks down again, shuffling his feet a little. "... I said love, didn't I?"
Your brows raise playfully at his sarcastic answer, and you stand, walking over to him. "I... I love you, too."
His eyes widen. "Wait, really?"
You laugh a little. "Really."
It goes quiet because neither of you know what to say, but it's not lost on either of you how close you are. He starts to lean in, and it's almost as if it's not a conscious decision, but you're a magnet pulling him in. You start to lean in, too, but then you pull back, remembering another quote from Gone With the Wind.
"'No, I don't think I will kiss you,'" you say, and Peter recognizes it instantly, "'although you need kissing-'"
He cuts you off by pressing his lips to yours and everything else, as cheesy as it sounds, melts away.
It's by no means movie-worthy, considering neither of you have much experience, but it doesn't matter. And, at the very least, Peter doesn't practically break your neck when he pulls you in like in Gone With the Wind.
[Honestly that bothered me so much, like, lean down a little Rhett, you jerk.]
It feels like it's over as soon as it starts, and your mind is blank when you try to think of another to movie quote to keep up with the theme you guys have going.
Instead, before you can say anything, he kisses you again.
////
You've been dating for a few weeks now, and Ned's been pestering him to tell you about Spiderman.
Should you know? Yes. Does Peter think you knowing is dangerous? Yes. Do Ned and May know? Yes. And had he been deliberating on whether he should tell Michelle or not? Yes. Yes, he has.
So, he decides to tell you one day, on a whim, while you're in his room doing homework. May's in the living room watching TV.
"Hey, Y/N?" Peter asks. He's sitting next to you on his bed, a psychology book open in both your laps.
You look over at him. "Yeah?"
"I, uh, I gotta tell you something."
"If you recite a quote from The Notebook, I'm going to throw you onto the fire escape and lock you out."
He laughs, getting out of the bed and moving towards his closet. "I'm not." He stops and looks back at you. "Could you, um, go outside for a second?"
Confused, you comply and walk out into the living room. May looks up at you. "What are you doing?"
"Peter says he has to tell me something, and then he sends me outside 'for a second.' So I don't know."
May nods in understanding. "Oh, I think I know what he's doing. I don't wanna spoil the surprise, though." Then, she turns back to the TV.
Before you can respond, Peter shouts, "Okay!" So, you open the door.
His pants and shirt are on the floor and in their place, he's wearing a superhero suit. Spiderman's suit. You're silent for a few seconds, then you say, "You're cosplaying as Spiderman at ComicCon this year?"
"No," he says, reaching into his closet again and pulling out a mask. Then, he puts on said mask. "I am Spiderman."
You go silent again, still disbelieving. "... Prove it."
"What?"
"Prove it."
He sighs and starts climbing up the wall, then onto the ceiling. He shoots a web and lowers himself a little, hanging upside down. "Believe me now?"
Your eyes are wide. "Yeah, that'll do it." He snorts and you shake your head. "This is crazy. How?" So, he explains how - radioactive spider and all that. You stop. "Is this why you bring up Spiderman every time I ask you to kill a spider?"
"Yeah," he says simply. Then, he grins, so much so that you can tell even with the mask on. "Are you afraid of me?"
You snort loudly. "That's the most ridiculous thing you have ever said, including, 'I am Spiderman.'" Then, you walk up to him and take his mask off, now able to see his insanely pretty and innocent eyes.
"So you're cool with this?" he asks.
You laugh. "You're hanging upside from the ceiling on a web. This is awesome! Also, I don't how, but that suit makes you twenty times hotter."
He blushes crimson and you lean in and kiss him. When you pull away, he smiles and he gets an almost wistful look in his eyes. "Y/N, I... When I look in your eyes and you're looking back in mine... everything... feels... not quite normal. Because I feel stronger and weaker at the same time. I feel excited and at the same time, terrified. The truth is... I don't know what I feel except... I know what kind of man I want to be. It's as if I've reached the unreachable and I wasn't ready for it."
You blush and ask softly. "And what movie was that from?"
Peter frowns a little, flipping, breaking the web and landing on his feet. "That was from me"
He sees the grin on your face and knows immediately that you're about to say something sarcastic. "A movie called Me. Sounds interesting."
He rolls his eyes and kisses you again.
