Preference: New Years | Criminal Minds

HAPPY NEW YEAR! Spencer's is long oops.

Summary: New Years with your FBI... boyfriend. Sort of.

QOTP: Do you have any new years resolutions?

Word Count: 1247

Derek -
You spend New Years driving home from a case. You've been friends for years; you're partners.

The case you did was relatively close - an hour away - and it wasn't particularly urgent; no one was in immediate danger. So, you drove.

Now that you've put the killer away, you're driving back on New Years Eve. And, considering your huge crush on Derek Morgan, you've been thinking about that not-very-well-known tradition of kissing someone at midnight.

You've spent the drive thus far singing along to the radio very badly and talking a little about past cases and miscellaneous topics.

Then, the clock reads 11:50.

"Hey, ten minutes," you comment as a song goes off.

Derek glances at the clock, then turns back to the road. "Yep."

"Which means it's almost midnight. Almost next year."

He chuckles. "Yeah, it is."

"It's a shame we don't have any grapes," you joke.

He laughs. "And that we can't drink."

"Well you can't."

"Yeah, yeah."

It goes silent, then the clock turns to 11:53. He glances at the clock, then shrugs a little. "There's... one tradition we could do."

"And that would be?" you ask, hoping against all hope that he means what you think he means.

"You know... the midnight thing."

Your heart skips a beat. "The midnight thing?"

"Yeah... The midnight thing," he says, more flustered than you've ever seen him.

You laugh. "Derek Morgan, are you trying to ask me to kiss you at midnight?"

"... Maybe." He grins.

You grin back. "Then pull over in four minutes."

"Four?"

"It's 11:55."

"... Okay."

"Okay."

Both of you sit there, grinning like children, counting down every second until 11:59. Four minutes later, he pulls over, hands shaking. You silently count down until ten seconds are left, then you quietly count down out loud.

Luke -
You spend New Years Eve flying home from a case. It was a good case, as far as cases go; you saved lives and put the killer away.

You're sitting with Luke at a table, Emily and Rossi across from you. You have your head on Luke's shoulder, and his arm is wrapped around you.

"You two are so cute," Emily says.

Luke chuckles a little. "No, Y/N is the cute one."

"That was so cheesy," you say, rolling your eyes.

Rossi laughs. "Ah, young love."

"It's almost midnight," you here JJ say.

You sigh, "New Years Eve and I can't even spend it with Roxy."

"Oh, come on," Luke says, feigning offense.

You shrug. "What? She's way cooler than you."

"Yeah, you got me there."

"I don't understand how you can go from complimenting each other to borderline insulting each other so quickly," Spencer laughs.

Luke chuckles. "I guess we're just a power couple."

"Couple goals," you say jokingly. Emily laughs and rolls her eyes.

"It's 11:59," JJ calls out.

Fifty seconds later, Spencer says, "Ten seconds."

You all count down, then tiredly cheer. Luke quickly kisses you, then you lean your head on his shoulder.

Rossi lifts up his water bottle. "To another year of saving lives... and young love."

Spencer -
On December 31, you and the team are at work, catching up on paperwork and the like. Spencer, of course, is already done. And you, of course, want to throw yourself out of the nearest window rather than even attempt to finish.

So, you walk over to Spencer's desk, smile sweetly at him, and say, "Hey, Spencer."

"... Hi," he replies, confused.

You grimace a little. "You see, I have a problem-"

"I'm not doing your paperwork for you."

The facade immediately drops. "Why not?"

"That's your responsibility," he says.

You cross your arms. "You don't have to be so mean about it."

"Sorry, but I'm not doing your work for you."

"But I don't want to!"

He shrugs and you sigh. "Fine, but don't expect me to do you any favors anytime soon."

You hear Rossi, Derek, and Emily laughing as you walk back over to your desk.

Half an hour later, you're done. And now you're bored. So, of course, you decide to annoy Spencer.

You take a piece of paper, write 'you're mean' on it, crumple it, then chuck it at Spencer. When he opens it, he looks over at you, an eyebrow raised. You shrug, "That's what you get for not helping me."

He laughs and shakes his head. But you're not done; you came here to do some work and annoy Spencer. And you're all out of work.

You throw more and more.

helping me would've taken five seconds but I guess that's none of my business

what are you reading you nerd

Eventually, you've thrown so many, Spencer stops opening them up. So, you decide to be dumb and risky and tell him how you really feel.

I like you

It takes you a few seconds to actually throw, but when you do, it lands right on his book. He looks at you, then pointedly tosses the paper at the trash can, under the assumption that something stupid was written on it. You don't know whether to be relieved or not.

Later, it's time to go home and get ready for Rossi's New Years party. You head home, so you're not present when Garcia picks up a paper ball on the floor next to the trash can and unfolds it.

She looks at Derek. "Was Y/N... throwing paper balls at someone?"

"Reid. Why?" Derek asks, walking over to her. She hands him the paper. Derek stands there in shock for a few seconds, then looks back up at Reid, who's getting ready to head home.

Garcia smirks.

A few hours later, everyone's just eaten homemade pasta at Rossi's party, and now you're all relaxing in the living room and waiting for the ball to drop. Garcia made it so you and Spencer had to sit next to each other.

Two minutes before midnight, Garcia asks you to get a large box out of her trunk, claiming "it's a surprise." Then, she decides to have Spencer go with you because "it's heavy."

So, you take her car keys, walk outside, then unlock the car. After a few seconds, you declare there's mo box and go to tell her.

The door won't open.

"It was unlocked when we walked out," Spencer says.

You push on the door, to no avail, then turn to Spencer. "What time is it?"

"11:59."

"We're gonna miss the ball drop."

You knock on the door, ring the doorbell, but nobody comes to open it. Suddenly, Spencer grabs your hand. "I, uh, I don't think they're coming."

"I noticed," you say, with a little more sarcasm than you would've liked.

Spencer glances at his watch, which also counts seconds. "It's, um, twenty seconds until... midnight."

After Spencer grabbed your hand, you'd been thinking. You sigh. "Did you miss the trash can when you threw that paper ball?"

"Yeah. Why?" he replies.

You know exactly what's going on here, and decide to make most of it.

You grab Spencer's other hand and watch as his watch counts down.

Without warning, you grab his collar and pull him down, his lips smashing onto yours.
