Preference: I Almost Lost You | Marvel

Requested by @gammergurl777

I'm continuing with the old schedule until the week Infinity War comes out because I have a Spiderman imagine to post the day of.

Summary: You almost die, causing them to freak out.

QOTP: Can you move your seat up?

Word Count: 2627

"Banner, I love you, but calm down," you say to the nervous scientist. A few of you are on the Quinjet, heading off on a mission.

An easy one.

"We're only there to get some data from one of the computers," Natasha reassures him, glancing back; she's assumed the role of pilot. "It's gonna be fine."

"I just have the feeling that something bad is going to happen," Bruce says, trying to refrain from wringing his hands.

"If anything bad happens, we will handle it," T'Challa adds, having become a frequent guest at the Avenger's base and on missions.

"There's five of us," Clint says. "And, like, three of us have powers. We'll be fine."

"Three?" you question, quirking an eyebrow. Bruce is the Hulk, and T'Challa is the Black Panther. By your count, that's two.

Clint replies as if he's stating the obvious. "Bruce, T'Challa, and me."

////

"Okay, we have a problem," Nat says over the comms.

You punch the guy attacking you in the face, only to be met by someone else trying to kill you. "You think?"

"It's not looking good on my end, either," Clint says. You can hear arrows flying and Bruce's nervous breathing over his own comm; he's trying to download the files from the computer you were looking for onto a flash drive.

"I can't hold them off much longer," T'Challa says. "There's too many." He's with Bruce, protecting him until he can get the data.

"Nat, where are you?" you ask, the panic evident in your voice; you're surrounded. People on your left and right, solid wall in front and behind. Not a door in sight.

"I'm near the front doors," Nat replies, seemingly out of breath.

You speak and fight at the same time, taking someone out before you even finish your next sentence. "I don't know if I'm gonna make it out of this one." The rest advance, three of them lunging at you all at once; you're lucky the hallway's narrow.

"Where are you?" every one else asks, almost simultaneously.

"I-I don't know. I-" You're cut off before you can finish.

"Y/N?" There's no answer. "Y/N?!"

Bruce -
"I knew something bad was going to happen." You hear a worried voice on your left, your eyes still closed. The last thing you remember was fighting in the hallway, then a sharp pain. You blacked out.

"I know you did," someone else says. They're on your right.

You're in a bed, and you hear beeping. There's a dull throb in your head, but you crack an eye open anyway, only to close it immediately because of the light.

"Y/N?" the first voice asks. You identify it as Bruce's and smile a little.

"Hey, Banner," you reply. "Here to say, 'I told you so'?"

The second voice - Tony - chuckles. "I'll leave you two alone."

You hear the door shut, then sigh. "Could you do me a favor and turn the lights off?"

There's shuffling, then a flick of a switch. "They're off."

You slowly open your eyes and see Bruce walking back towards your bed, looking down at you with a worried yet relieved expression. You reach over with some difficulty and grab his hand. "Well, that was quite the mission."

Bruce sighs, running his other hand through his hair. "Yeah, it was."

"Lighten up, Green Giant," you tease. "I'm alive, aren't I?"

Bruce looks at you for a good few moments, and you can see his eyes watering. "I almost lost you."

"But you didn't," you reply. "That's the important part."

He smiles a little. "Yeah, I guess it is."

Bucky -
"Is Y/N awake yet?" he asks. He's been asking ever since you came back from the mission, unconscious and on the brink of death.

Yeah. Death.

You're fine now, for the most part. Stable. But you still haven't woken up. And Bucky is very concerned.

"No, Mr. Barnes, I'm afraid not," the nurse tells him for the umpteenth time. "I'll have someone tell you the minute she is."

He sulks away, only to come running back half an hour later when he gets a text from Steve, telling him you're awake.

Steve is standing next to your bed when Bucky comes running in, relief stained onto his face.

"Hey, Buck," you say, amused. "Happy to see me?"

"I almost lost you," he replies simply, as if it were the most natural thing in the world for him to say. You stop, confused as to what he just said.

"You almost lost me?" you ask. It's the wording that gets you. Sure, you're good friends, but it's not like you're dating or anything. Steve quietly excuses himself, knowing full and well how Bucky feels about you.

"Y-Yeah," he stutters out. "I did." Suddenly realizing that he, in fact, did almost lose you, he throws caution to the wind and tells you what he feared he'd never get to. "I almost didn't get to tell you that... that I like you. I sound like I'm thirteen, I know, but... I do."

He patiently waits for you to process and respond to what he just said, and it doesn't take long. You smile. "I like you, too. And, considering the circumstances, I feel like it would be the time where you'd kiss me. I'd initiate it more smoothly, but it hurts to sit up, so..."

He chuckles and leans down, pressing his lips to yours.

Clint -
As soon as he learns you're awake, he races into the room, not paying attention to Thor or Tony, who are already talking to you. He runs up, cutting them off, and says, "I am so sorry."

You look at him quizzically. "For what?"

"For not being there."

You smile a little, shaking your head. "Clint, there was no way you could've been there. You were on the other side of the building, dealing with problems of your own. It's not your fault, and it's not anybody else's on the team. Okay?"

Clint reluctantly sighs. "Okay."

"Man of Iron," Thor suddenly says, "we should leave now so they can have a merry reunion with the kissing and stuff."

Tony is confusedly pushed out by Thor as Clint goes red and you stifle a laugh until the thunder god is gone. Once the door is shut, you look at Clint. "You don't have to kiss me, Barton."

"Good," he quietly replies. "Why would I want to, anyway?"

"Is that any way to talk to someone whose just had a near-death experience?" you say, feigning offense.

He chuckles. "Well, I'm sorry I didn't have a sonnet prepared." Suddenly, he turns serious. "I almost lost you, you know."

"Yeah," you say. After a few moment, you smile again. "But you can't get rid of me that easily."

Peter -
"Y/N?" Peter asks. He's been sitting by your bed ever since the doctor allowed him to, otherwise he would've been there while they were performing emergency surgery.

Yeah, it was that bad.

Anyway, Peter saw your finger twitch, which he had seen happen a couple times before, each time hoping that you'd finally be awake.

This time, it actually happens.

Your eyes flutter open, and you take a second to adjust to the light. Then, you look over at Peter, who has pure happiness written on his face. He stands from his chair and crouches down next to the bed, taking your hand. "You're awake."

You smile a little, despite the pain creeping up on you from your injury. "Yeah, I am."

"I almost lost you," he says, unable to look away from you long enough to tell anyone else but you that you're awake.

"Well, now you know how it feels," you reply, referring to an incident a couple months ago when you thought he was going to die.

"I guess neither of us are ever leaving the base again," he says.

"I guess not."

Sam -
Steve has been with him since the moment he heard what had happened. He held him back when they rushed you in, the scene like one out of a hospital drama. People were shouting things: the injury, the fact that you weren't breathing, and that your pulse was dropping rapidly. As soon as he saw the blood, he didn't think of anything else.

He ran towards you. Steve caught him, but he broke away and sprinted down the hall, following as they carried you to the medical ward where they were already prepping for surgery. Steve caught him again at the doors, knowing that he couldn't let him in there.

He calmed him down and sat with him in the living room, telling him that it was going to be okay until they both eventually fell into a restless sleep.

Around 6 am, someone shakes him awake and he immediately rushes to the medical ward, relieved to see the doctor talking to you.

You're awake.

"Y/N." That's all he can say.

You turn, your eyes lighting up when you see him. "Sam."

Tears in his eyes, he stands beside your bed, taking your hand in his. "I almost lost you."

You smile a little, squeezing his hand. "I'm not going anywhere."

Steve -
"We should've sent more people on that mission," Steve says. You're already awake, but you're keeping your eyes closed; you simply can't be bothered to do anything. Almost dying can do that to you.

"Steve, there was no way anyone could've known that would happen," Sam replies. He's on the right side of your bed. Steve is on the left.

"Why didn't anyone listen to Bruce?" he asks. "Why didn't we send anyone beforehand to scout out the place?"

"Because we thought it was abandoned," Sam says. Steve sighs, and there's a pause before he speaks again.

"This could've been prevented."

"Not really, Rogers," you finally add, tired of hearing him and Sam arguing.

"You're awake?" they both exclaim simultaneously.

You reply, still not opening your eyes. "Yes, I am. Now stop arguing. I'm trying to sleep."

It's silent for a couple seconds, then you hear footsteps, and the door opening and closing. After a few more moments, Steve speaks again. "Are you still awake?"

"Yes, unfortunately."

"I almost lost you."

You open one eye and look at him. "Yeah, you did. But I'm alive. I'm also loosing sleep."

Steve chuckles a little and goes to leave. "Right. Sorry."

When he's halfway out the door, you stop him. "Hey, Steve?"

"Yeah?"

"I love you."

"... I love you, too."

T'Challa -
"I already have ideas on how to prevent this the next time, so don't worry," Shuri says. Peter is standing next to her, both of them looking down at you in your hospital bed.

"That's great, Shuri. But I don't think I'll be on any missions any time soon," you reply.

Peter shrugs a little, smiling. "That just gives us more time to perfect it."

"And to make other stuff for your new suit. I'm gonna go make designs later," Shuri adds.

T'Challa watches this exchange, unnoticed, from the doorway. After Peter and Shuri start telling you their ideas, he decides to step in. "I don't think you need to be overwhelming her with all that right now."

"Right. Sorry, Mr. Panther, sir," Peter says sheepishly, causing you and Shuri to laugh. She grabs his hand and drags him out, teasing him the entire way back to her lab.

You look at T'Challa, who's fighting off a smile. "Hey, Mr. Panther, sir."

He chuckles, standing next your bed and kissing your forehead. After a few moments, he turns serious. "I almost lost you."

"I don't think Shuri and Peter are gonna let that happen anytime soon, 'Challa, so I wouldn't worry."

"I'm serious."

"So am I. I'm not going anywhere for a long time. You're stuck with me."

He smiles. "And there's no one else I'd rather have to deal with."

Thor -
He's been sitting in a tiny, uncomfortable chair next to your bed for hours, pretending to read a book he got from Bruce. He hasn't turned the page since he opened it because he's been so busy looking up at you every five seconds.

"A watched pot never boils," Tony says from the doorway. Thor only looks at him, confused, so he continues. "What I mean to say is, you sitting there and staring at her isn't going to make her wake up any faster."

"I have to be here when she wakes up," Thor replies.

Tony nods. "Alright, Point Break. Suit yourself. Clint got you some pop tarts from the store earlier. They're in the kitchen."

"Thank you, Man of Iron."

It takes an hour for you to finally wake up.

"Lady Y/N!" Thor shouts, causing you to smile a little.

"Hi, Thor."

He hugs you excitedly, avoiding your injury. "I almost lost you."

You grab his hand when he pulls away, still smiling tiredly. "I'm right here, Thor. You're not gonna lose me."

After a few moments of comfortable silence, Thor asks, "Do you, by any chance, want a tart of pop, Lady Y/N?"

You sigh. "Go and have a pop tart, Thor. I'll be fine on my own for a while."

He jumps up excitedly and makes his way to the kitchen. "Thank you, Lady Y/N!"

Tony -
As soon as he's allowed into the room, he's shouting. He doesn't care that a nurse is there, checking your IV. He doesn't care that the whole team is standing there, witnessing it. He just starts shouting.

"She is never going on another mission ever again!"

"Tony!" Natasha starts, trying to get him to calm down, or at least leave. He ignores her.

"I'm not joking! She's never going anywhere unless it's with me or a suit-"

"Tony, you're being ridiculous," Steve says gently. "Just take a second and calm down."

"How can I be calm?!" Tony exclaims. "My girlfriend nearly died!"

"You're just freaked out," Wanda says, stepping forward. "Calm down. I know it scared you, but you can't come in here screaming and shouting things you're going to take back later."

"Take back?!"

"Man of Iron, Lady Y/N needs to rest," Thor says. "You should not be shouting right now."

"Too late for that, Thor, but thanks." Everyone stops, shocked to see you awake. You sigh. "Could I speak with Tony alone?"

Everyone files out but Tony, who's still angry, though not as much as he was. He sighs, shaking his head. "I almost lost you."

"I know," you reply, "and I don't even want to imagine what it'd feel like if our positions were reversed. But you can't storm around here saying stuff like that, especially if it's not going to happen."

"Y/N-"

"Believe it or not, I can handle myself. We made a mistake this time-"

"You almost died."

"But I didn't. And now I know how to handle it next time. And there will be a next time."

Tony sighs again, the anger draining out of him. He walks over to you and grabs your hand. "I'm sorry, Y/N/N. I just... I can't go through that again. When they brought you in here... I just don't know what I'd do if you were really gone."

You smile a little and squeeze his hand. "I don't know what I'd do if I lost you, either."

"Then we'll just both never go on a mission again."

"Not a chance."

"It was worth a shot."
