QOTP: Jerry or Cole?
Word Count: 1800
Billy -
You're not entirely sure whose idea it was to play spin the bottle in the back room, but you're pretty sure it was Josie Pye's.
She's directing everybody — telling you to sit boy, girl, boy, girl, and deciding who gets to spin the bottle — so that would make the most sense.
"Diana," she says, "you spin."
You're sitting in between Charlie and Moody, which isn't the worst place to be. Moody, though clumsy, is very polite, and Charlie doesn't seem to be too bad, either.
You feel more sorry for Tillie and Ruby. Billy Andrews is sitting in between them.
You're startled when Moody suddenly stands up. When you were lost in thought, Diana had spun the bottle and it landed on him. They're now standing in front of each other, blushing as everyone cheers them on.
They kiss very quickly and awkwardly, then sit back down grinning. You look over at Moody — who looks back at you with an amazed look on his face - and chuckle.
"How about you spin, Anne?" Josie says, a smug look on her face. You look over at your red-haired friend, who seems embarrassed. You and Diana smile at her encouragingly and she spins the bottle.
It lands on Cole.
Everyone laughs, though not in a good way. "The freaks are gonna kiss!" someone shouts, though you don't see who.
Cole and Anne stand, then Cole politely kisses Anne on the cheek and they bow, which everyone laughs at — in a good way this time.
"Y/N," Josie says once Anne and Cole have sat down.
Before you can fully realize what Josie said, Charlie complains, "Why do only girls get to spin?"
"Because I said so," Josie replies. "Spin, Y/N."
Hesitantly, you reach forward and spin the bottle, nervous and excited to see who it'll land on.
Billy Andrews.
You expect to hear a shout of, "Ew! I'm not kissing her!" However, in the midst of Josie opening her mouth to protest, Billy grins and stands.
You're still on the floor due to shock, so Billy holds his hand out. You take it, letting him pull you up. Josie is fuming in your peripheral vision, while everyone else is waiting in silent anticipation.
Billy, still holding your hand, leans forward and kisses you gently and quickly. Everyone begins laughing and cheering — except Josie. As you and Billy sit back down, she glares at both of you.
You're so lost in thought, you don't even pay attention to the rest of the game.
If only he wasn't a jerk, you think.
Gilbert -
Anne, Cole, and Diana invited you to Aunt Josephine's annual Spring Party — actually held in Winter — and you've been nervous and hopeful all day long.
They invited Gilbert Blythe, too.
Josephine had told them that they could invite whoever they wanted, and Anne's mind immediately went to you. Then, they had the idea to invite Gilbert, seeing as you like him and they're certain he likes you, too.
So, here you are, standing under a canopy of flowers in the brightest dress you own, a flower crown resting on your head. Anne told you earlier that she thinks Gilbert is going to ask you to dance tonight, and, though you're skeptical, you're also hopeful.
You look at all the happy, bright people around you, trying to spot one of your friends amidst them, but to no avail.
Suddenly, there's a tap on your shoulder.
You turn to meet Gilbert, causing your cheeks to go red. "Gi-Gilbert. Hey."
"Hey," he replies, not noticing your nervous stutter because he's nervous himself. "I was wondering if you'd want to, um, dance? Wi-With me?"
You smile, your stomach doing somersaults. "I'd love to."
He looks relieved as he takes your hand. You nervously put your other hand on his shoulder, and he hesitantly puts his on your waist.
"You look really... nice," he says as you begin to awkwardly dance.
You blush. "You look nice, too."
He hesitates for a moment, thinking, then shakes his head. "No, I... Nice wasn't the word I was going for."
Your raise a brow. "Then, what was the word you were going for?"
He smiles, blushing before he even speaks. "Beautiful."
He may be the cheesiest boy you've ever met, but you're falling for him anyway. You stutter, "I... Thank you. You're... beautiful, too."
He laughs. "Thank you."
"You're welcome," you reply, also laughing.
Now more comfortable, he spins you, and when you're facing him again, you spin him, too, causing him to laugh. You go out and spin back into his arms, him later doing the same. With each passing second, you get more comfortable and, consequently, closer to each other.
You're both spinning and laughing to the upbeat music as if drunk, unable to speak due to shortage of breath.
Unbeknownst you, Aunt Josephine — on Anne's instruction — is telling the band to play something slow. Of course, they listen to her.
You stop for a moment, then Gilbert starts dancing again, this time more slowly. You're both breathless, so it's a welcome change in tempo, though you're more aware than ever of how close you are.
"You're surprisingly a good dancer," you joke.
"Surprisingly?" he asks. "I'm offended."
You laugh. "There was a compliment in there."
"Surprisingly, there was."
"Now I'm offended. I give great compliments."
"Really?" he teases. "Let's hear them, then."
You think for a moment, though it's not hard to find something about him to compliment. "You have the prettiest eyes I've ever seen in my life."
He blushes but continues joking. "That wasn't half bad."
"Oh, I'm not done," you reply. "Your dimples are absolutely adorable, you're the nicest — and smartest — boy in all of Avonlea, you have the prettiest smile... and you look really cute in that flower crown."
His face is crimson by the end of it, but he manages to look at you instead of the floor. "You know, I could retaliate with the sweetest, most heartfelt compliments you've ever heard in your life, but words wouldn't do how I feel about you justice."
You've almost stopped moving by now, slightly swaying as you look at each other, feeling like you're the only two people in the room. "What would, then?" you ask quietly.
He leans forward, then stops, making sure you're okay with what he's about to do. In answer to his silent question, you lean in the rest of the way, pressing your lips to his.
You pull away after a few seconds, still close enough that your flower crowns are bumping together.
Suddenly, a delighted shriek breaks through the noise.
Anne, Diana, and a laughing Cole are standing a few feet away, and Anne is absolutely ecstatic. "I told you! I told you!"
"You couldn't've waited a few more hours?" Diana asks, referencing the bet she and Anne had made that you've yet to find out about.
"Sorry?" Gilbert replies, causing you all to laugh.
"It's fine, I guess," Diana replies. "I really wanted to win, though..."
Jerry -
"Anne!" you shriek as the flour she just tossed at you hits your apron, the cloud going up into your face and falling to the floor. Anne starts laughing. You're laughing, too, though you say, "Marilla's going to be furious when she sees this mess."
"We'll clean it up before she gets back from Mrs. Lynde's," Anne replies, cheeks red from all the laughter.
"Oh," you say, grabbing a small handful of flour, "well, in that case..." You throw the flour at her and both of you burst into laughter.
"Okay, we have to be serious now," Anne says, though she can't stop herself from smiling.
"I'd never thought I'd hear that phrase come out of your mouth."
You're currently making muffins in the Cuthbert's kitchen as the both of you are learning how to cook. (Anne knows more than you, but she doesn't know everything, and she often messes up what she does know because she gets distracted.)
After you put the batch of muffins in the oven, you start cleaning the flour off the floor and the counter. When you finish, you take out the muffins and set them out to cool.
"We should take some to Matthew and Jerry," Anne suggests. Then, she stops, smirking. "Or I should take some to Matthew and you can take some to Jerry."
You roll your eyes, though you're chuckling. "Alright, fine. I wanted to see him anyway."
Anne laughs, grabbing two muffins and bounding out of the house. You grab two muffins and run after her.
She enjoys teasing you and Jerry about your relationship, which you've been in for a few months now. At first, she didn't like the idea, but she warmed up to it soon enough, even giving Jerry some unsolicited advice from time to time.
You find her in the barn with Matthew and assume Jerry is in the loft. Saying hi to Matthew, you make your way up the ladder, the muffins in one hand.
When your chin passes the floorboards, you see Jerry moving the hay. "Hello."
He jumps a little, then turns and smiles, seeing you. "Hello." You climb up onto the floor and hand him a muffin. He takes it eagerly, then stops. "Did Anne make this?" he asks, feigning caution.
You shove him lightly. "Yes. We both did."
He laughs and starts eating the muffin. He doesn't immediately spit it out, so you assume it's edible.
Suddenly, he laughs. Your brows furrow. "What?"
"You have flour all over you," he says. "It's even on your nose." You reach up to wipe it off, but he grabs your hand, stopping you. Knowing full and well how cheesy he's being, he leans forward to kiss your nose.
If he's going to be cheesy, you think, then I'll be even cheesier.
You tilt your head up, and by that point, it's too late. His lips land right on yours. He pulls back immediately, shocked because he didn't expect that. You grin at him cheekily.
"If you wanted me to kiss you, you could've just said so," he jokes, leaning forward to kiss you again.
"You better finish these muffins before they get cold." You hand him the second one.
"They'd go down a lot easier with a drink," he says, hinting that he wants you to go get him one.
You sigh, heading towards the ladder. "Fine."
"I'll have a kiss waiting for you when you get back."
"Yeah, yeah."
