FBI Stuff | Jonathan Black

Summary: After spending so much time with Cameron, he gets kidnapped, so you have to hang out with Johnathan...

QOTP: Cameron or Jonathan?

Word Count: 7454

Cameron Black. He's annoying, he runs into danger with reckless abandon, and you never know what he has up his sleeve. Literally.

However, he also has the biggest heart of anyone you've ever met. He's incredibly kind, caring, and funny (sometimes), and he's ridiculously intelligent, but he doesn't show it off unless necessary. And he's not cocky or arrogant, even though he's a famous illusionist/escape artist.

He's Cameron. And you're used to it, having been working with him for so long; you're an FBI agent.

Because of this, it's jarring when Jonathan - his twin - shows up to help find Cameron after he's been kidnapped by the Mystery Woman. Jonny looks just like him - down to the hair style - but he acts completely different.

He's still annoying, but in a different, more exasperating way. You haven't known him long enough to tell whether he'd run into danger like Cameron. However, they have one thing in common other than looks: You literally never know what he has up his sleeve.

He seems very Cameron-orientated, but, admittedly, that makes sense. And he's sarcastic, in an annoying way as opposed to a funny one. He's intelligent, too, and it feels like he intentionally shows it off. He seems cocky and arrogant, even though he'd been living in Cameron's shadow all his life.

Then again, maybe that's why.

Or maybe he was different before prison, but you'd never actually know.

From what you can tell at the moment, he's Jonathan. And it's weird to see Cameron act like that, even if you know he's not Cameron.

When you met him, when you shook his hand, he smirked. And it wasn't a Cameron smirk. Jonathan's was more... cocky. You could think of a thousand offensive comments that would've fit that smirk perfectly.

He didn't say anything, though. His pride was probably damaged by the tracking device Kay put on his ankle.

It was weird, though, seeing his smirk on Cameron's face.

Even when you know it's not Cameron.

////

You take him back to Cameron and Co.'s house - his house, too, before he got arrested - and your opinion starts to change.

He seems more like Cameron around Dina, Justin, and Gunter. A funny sort of sarcastic, a less-cocky genre of smirk.

You also remember that he used to date Dina, and Dina's... Dina, so that boosts your opinion of him a little bit.

Everyone gets right to business, discussing the kidnapping. Cameron isn't visible from the security footage because the crowd of people filming him with their phones. He's surrounded.

You start discussing why the Mystery Woman would want Cameron in the first place.

"What does Cam have?" you ask, thinking out loud. "I've never heard of needing so many people to kidnap one."

Jonny looks over at you, and his eyes light up a little. For a second, you're a little flustered, but then it's like he's looking through you instead of at you - he had an idea.

"Sacrifice 99 to fool one." He sees you again when you give him a confused look. "It's an illusion where the entire audience is in on the trick just to fool one member of it - can I demonstrate? Matt?"

He's looking at Mike, who corrects him. "It's Mike. And I don't like magic." You'd comment on Jonathan's jealous behavior - something is going on between Mike and Dina - but Mike just told the biggest lie.

"Since when?" Kay asks, beating you to the punch.

He sighs, sitting down in a chair at the counter. "Okay. One trick." You smirk a little; he's jealous, too.

"This trick is called Slydini's Flight of the Paper Balls," Jonny explains. He takes pieces of paper off the counter and crumbles them up, handing one to Mike. "Hold that for me." Then, he hands you the rest. "Hold these."

"I didn't sign up for this, but okay," you mutter, accidentally dropping a ball on the floor. It sits there as Jonny starts the trick.

He turns to Mike again. "All you gotta do is watch this ball. I'm gonna put it in my hand and tap it, and it's gonna disappear, all right? So, watch super carefully as I tap-" He takes the ball in his hand, taps it, then throws it over Mike's head. "- and it disappears."

Mike looks around, unable to see how the trick was done. "Where'd it go?" Everyone laughs; you all saw it.

"We'll try one more time," Jonathan says, taking a paper ball from you. But keeps doing it, effectively embarrassing Mike. He would've done it more if Dina hadn't stopped him.

"So, everyone was in on the kidnapping last night?" you ask, an edge to your voice considering what he did, bending down to pick up the paper ball you dropped.

He takes it from you when you stand back up and tosses it back and forth between his hands, noting your tone. "Not necessarily." He stops his explanation there, makes the paper ball disappear, and turns to Kay. "Take me to the crime scene. You missed something." Without waiting for a response, he starts to walk out.

"You can't go farther than fifty yards from Kay with that anklet on!" you shout after him, bothered by his attitude. Cameron wouldn't act like this, especially if Jonny was in danger.

"I know, princess!" he calls back dryly.

As Kay and Mike start to follow him, you look back at Dina, Justin, and Gunter. They all have some form of a grimace on their face. Dina shrugs. You sigh before leaving. "I'm gonna commit a murder before this is over with."

////

At the crime scene, Jonathan is being obnoxious. To put it subtly.

You arrive and loose him. Kay's watch never beeps, so he can't be more than fifty yards away. You're trying to find him when he comes around the corner, eating a hot dog he got from a street vendor.

"What are you doing?!" you exclaim, causing him to raise an eyebrow. You'd react that way if it were Cam.

Honestly, if it wasn't a situation where Jonny was directly involved, Cam probably would've done something like that.

Jonathan sighs. "Do you have any idea how disgusting prison food is?"

"Where did you get the money to pay for that?"

He ignores your question. "You seen it yet?" He looks at Kay and Mike, too, inviting them to answer.

"Seen what?" you snap, crossing your arms.

He turns to you again. "Remember Andre the Giant?"

"The wrestler?" Kay asks.

Jonathan looks over at her. "The incredibly large wrestler, hence the moniker. Back in 1989, a design student used his image in a sticker campaign that appeared all over the world - 'Andre the Giant Has a Posse.'"

"I remember those," Mike says. "You'd even see them in bathrooms."

Jonny nods. "Exactly. It was an experiment in phenomenology - the idea that you can see something but not really be aware of it. They put the stickers everywhere so they just kind of blended into your everyday life."

"What's your point, Jonathan?" you ask, exasperated.

"I was getting to that," he replies. He points to different places on the street. "The brick wall in the alley, ATM, parking meter, what do they have in common?"

You shake your head as if to clear it, confused, then snap at him for the second time in two minutes. "Stopping asking questions and explain."

"The Q sticker," he says, matching your tone. "Most people walk straight by them. They see them, but they're not consciously aware of them. In order to be aware of them, you gotta look for them - unless you're me. I just kind of always see the patterns without trying."

You start to reply, but then Kay says, "Somebody's watching us." There's a girl taking pictures of Jonathan from the other side of the street. You, Mike, and Kay pull out your guns, running over and shouting, "FBI! Freeze!"

The girl freaks. "I'm sorry. I-I just I heard he was over here..."

Jonathan's confused, so Kay explains as you lower your guns. "She thinks you're Cameron."

"Are you a fan?" Jonny asks.

"No," she says. You snort. Jonny's smirk drops as she continues. "I just wanted to boost my points for the Octagon."

"What is that?" Kay asks.

"Symbol for Quest Trek."

Mike's brows furrow. "Quest Trek the game?" The girl nods. You, Jonathan, and Kay all look confused, so Mike elaborates. "It's a mobile game."

"That's why they were using their phones," you say, a light coming on. "They weren't filming Cameron. They were playing a game."

////

You take the girl - Alex - back to the FBI offices for questioning. Mainly to explain the app.

Jonathan is sitting on the table. You and Kay are standing behind Alex, who's pointing her phone at him with Quest Trek open. On the screen, Jonathan is glowing blue. Alex smiles a little. "Congratulations. You're worth a million points."

"Don't encourage him," you mutter. Jonny hears and rolls his eyes.

"You're glowing," Kay says.

He smirks. "Thanks. It's the exercise and healthy diet in prison."

"The map in the game alerts you whenever there's a target nearby," Alex says, ignoring Jonny.

You turn your attention away from him, too. "These targets, they're always actual people?"

Alex shakes her head. "No. That was just one challenge. It's never the same thing twice."

As she turns her phone off, Kay leans back against the table. "Can you tell us about the Octagon? What is it?"

"It's the final Quest. At Roosevelt Island. The top point-getters in the world come together to compete in a winner-take-all Quest." She pulls a piece of paper out of her bag. "Here's my invitation. It's today."

"You think the Mystery Woman used a mobile game that has 2 million users worldwide to abduct Cameron?" you ask Kay.

"Yeah," she and Jonny reply simultaneously. Kay continues. "But I don't know how it's possible."

You think for a second. "Maybe she hacked it."

Kay stands, walking out of the room. "We'll find out at the Octagon."

////

Kay and Mike take Alex back to her hotel, but you hang back, deciding to do some research on the event.

Jonathan hangs back, too, and stops you before you can leave the room with a gentle hand on your arm. You look at him, a cautious glare in your eyes. "What?"

"I'm... sorry. About before. I just wanna find Cameron."

You can tell he's being sincere by the look in his eyes and the fact that his hand is still on your arm. And if you're honest, it's making it hard to concentrate. You shake your head a little as if to clear it. "Me, too."

With that, you walk out, a small, friendly smile on your face.

////

You, Jonathan, and Kay are in the Octagon, and Mike's hanging back with back-up. Obviously, the goal is to find the Mystery Woman.

A woman's voice suddenly comes blaring through a speaker. "Welcome to The Octagon! If you're here today, that means you're the best of the best, and we've created the most challenging Quest any of you have ever participated in. One of the former patients of this asylum wrote cryptic riddles all over the walls. The first player to answer every riddle correctly will be awarded 5 million points. Without further delay, it's time for you all to enter The Octagon! Good luck."

Jonathan's eyes are wide. "The voice - that was her. That's the Mystery Woman. I'll never forget that voice."

"Why waste her time with a game?" Kay asks.

Jonny sighs. "Because it's not just a game to her. It's like when she took Cameron - the game was a disguise for an actual kidnapping. My guess is, the story she's telling is true, but she doesn't know the answer. I think she's crowdsourcing Quest Trek's brain power to help her figure something out."

Kay looks around. "Let's go talk to the CEO and find out if he even knows he's working for a criminal mastermind."

"What about the Quest?" Jonny asks. "She's obviously after something important. I can solve the riddle and figure it out." The look on both your faces says it all for him. "You don't trust me."

"I'm not gonna let you go off on your own," Kay says.

Jonathan points to you. "Y/N can go with me."

"How's that gonna work?" you ask. "Not to fuel your ego or anything, but there's no way I can solve all these riddles- Wait." You get an idea. "Do you know sign language?"

"Yeah?"

"Great. You're gonna pretend to be deaf and I'm going to be your interpreter."

"Y/N, that could be considered offensive-"

"It's the only thing I can think of on the spot, okay? Just... come on."

////

The line for the first room is long, and you're far enough away from the door that you can talk like normal.

But you aren't.

Jonathan's leaning against the wall, and you're facing him at a diagonal, unable to keep yourself from staring. "Take a picture; it'll last longer," he says, causing you to jump.

"Sorry," you say, blushing. "It's just weird."

His brow quirks. "What? You've never seen an identical twin before?"

You sigh, trying to figure out how to explain yourself. "It's just... Okay, so I've joked with Cam a lot that you and him are like Fred and George from Harry Potter - you know, cause you're twins and you can do magic - but... you're not."

He pauses. "Why?"

"Well, Fred and George act exactly the same, but... you and Cam don't."

"Well, yeah, we're two different people."

The line shifts forward and you move with it, gathering your thoughts. "I know, but I haven't been around you both at the same time before. I guess it makes it hard to differentiate between you two personality-wise when you look exactly the same. It's like you're supposed to be one person, but you're not. You're just so different."

"How?" he asks, genuinely interested.

You're not sure how to answer him, so it takes you a second. "Okay, let's turn to Harry Potter again. He's Hufflepuff, and you're..."

"Slytherin?" He sighs. "Gee, thanks."

"Hey!" you say, surprising him. "Let's get one thing straight here, pal: Not all Slytherins are bad."

He chuckles, crossing his arms and leaning against the wall again. "Might wanna tell that to Voldemort, Bellatrix, Snape, and Draco."

"Firstly, Draco was a child influenced by his dumb father and Voldemort. And he redeemed himself, which is one of the only three things I will consider canon from The Cursed Child."

"What are the other two?"

"That Scorpius and Albus are in Slytherin and that they're best friends."

By this point, you're too close to continue talking. A few minutes later, when he goes into the first room, you explain to the worker in the room the fake situation and say Jonny's name is Albert.

He solves the riddle easily, then you find out Quest Trek  made up all the riddles but the last one. Now, you're joining the long line for room two.

"Not counting those two," Jonny says, picking up the conversation where you left off, "name one good Slytherin."

"Regulus Black," you reply immediately.

He shrugs. "Well, I guess I'll give you that."

Your head tilts to the side as you ask him your next question. "If you hate Slytherin so much, then what's your actual house?"

A small smirk grows on his face. "Slytherin."

"I knew it!" you say, smiling broadly. He can't help but smile back as you continue. "And I'm guessing Cam's Hufflepuff?"

"Gryffindor."

You pause, thinking for a moment. "Actually, that makes sense considering how he runs into death with reckless bravery and abandon."

Jonny laughs, then it's time for him to enter the next room.

////

You spend the rest of the waiting time talking about Harry Potter whenever possible. There was a debate over the best Marauder, but you both agreed on what a horrible person Snape was, so there's that.

Then, Jonathan makes it to the last room. They are the words written on the walls, covering them. Jonny looks at them, then spots a drawing of the stars on the ceiling. He lays on the floor, looking up at it.

He solves it based on stars that don't belong and signs his answer to you. You don't even glance at the Quest Trek employee. "Lynx."

When the worker doesn't reply, you both look at her. She smiles. "Thanks, Jonathan."

The Mystery Woman.

You both lunge for her, but she runs out of the room, jamming the door behind her. You didn't notice before; you were too busy looking at Jonny.

You kick the door down and chase after her, all the way outside, but she reaches a boat on the river and starts getting away.

That's when Jonathan grabs the gun from your belt and aims it at her.

"Jonathan, we need her alive," you say calmly after the shock passes. "I know you're angry, and you have every right to be, but we need her alive."

After a few moments, once she's out of sight, he sighs defeatedly and gives your gun back. Kay, Mike, and back-up had arrived about a minute ago - he got too far away from Kay and her watched beeped.

Kay's mad at Jonny; not only did she think he was running, he almost shot MW when you need her to find Cameron. She lectures him back at the FBI offices - she wants to send him back to prison. You cut her off. "Kay, be reasonable."

"Be reasonable?" she repeats, incredulous. "He was gonna kill her!"

"But he didn't."

Kay stops and sighs. Then, she looks at Jonathan. "It was my idea to take you out of the prison, and it's my idea to send you back. I can't trust you."

"I would've done the same thing-"

"-if he hadn't've taken your gun." You can't argue with her on that one, and there's nothing you can do about it. Jonny gets in the car with Mike to go back to prison. Kay looks over at you. "What changed?"

"What do you mean?"

"Why are you defending him now? What happened?"

You shrug. "He's not as annoying as he appears on the surface when you get to know him."

Kay snorts lightly. "I've yet to get to that point with him."

"We had time to chat while we were waiting in line."

"And you trust him?" Kay asks.

"I trust that he wants to save Cameron. And that he'll do anything to help him. When it comes down to it, he's got the right intentions."

Kay sighs, thinking, and walks out.

////

In the car, Jonathan is dreading going back to prison. No surprise. But there's something different about the feeling - something he didn't expect.

Obviously, having such a small taste of freedom is gonna make getting locked back up that much worse. But that's not it. There's a want there, for one specific thing, but he's not entirely sure what - or who - that is.

Cam? Dina?

Y/N?

The more he thinks about it, the more he leans towards one option. The one that makes the most sense.

It makes going back that much worse, and there's a lump settling in his throat just thinking about it. So, he clears his throat and turns to Mike. "Just so you know, Dina prefers rule-breakers to guys who follow standard protocol... or use the word 'protocol.'"

Mike chuckles a little. "She's too good for you, man."

Jonny actually smiles. "Probably."

"She's too good for me, too."

"Definitely." There's a pause, when Jonathan realizes Mike's going the wrong way. "We're not going back to prison?"

"Yep."

"Not to complain, but it's in the other direction."

"Thought we would make a stop first. I'm pretty sure Dina would want to see you."

Jonathan stops and his thoughts go back to Dina. To who he doesn't want to leave.

It'll be nice to talk to Dina. Patch things up. Get closure, almost. He smiles again. "Thanks."

////

You and Kay go to talk to the creator of Quest Trek, Lance Bauer, who definitely doesn't seem to have been in on MW's plan. Kay's doing most of the talking. You can't stop thinking about Jonathan, what you've could've done differently.

Lance is confused. "Addison Lake isn't a real person?"

"She gave you a fake name," Kay says. "How did you meet her?"

"She came to me about a year ago with all these smart, original ideas."

"Like today's Quest?" you add, more thinking out loud to yourself than anything.

"I thought it was clever to have the asylum challenge the day before the big auction. How was I supposed to know the Rockefeller's kid's writings were real?"

"Rockefeller?" Kay asks. "Of the Rockefellers?"

Lance nods. "He was a young patient in the late '40s, told everyone his family had this key to some hidden fortune. But like I told you, he wasn't well. No one took him seriously. Until now."

Kay stands. "Thank you."

It takes you a second to register that you're leaving. You shake your head a little to clear it, but stop walking before you reach the door. "What big auction were you just referring to?"

"The Rockefeller Collection at Devlin's Auction House," Lance answers. "It's tomorrow night."

////

"I heard what happened," Dina says the second Jonny walks in. Her eyes are sad.

"Everything?" he asks.

She sighs. "Just that the Mystery Woman was at the Octagon and that..."

"I stole Y/N's gun and almost killed her?" he finishes.

"Yeah."

"I kinda lost control... Lost sight of what's important."

"It's not the first time that's happened."

It stings, but not as bad as it would have yesterday. A week ago. He soldiers on. "They can't trust me anymore, so Mike's gonna take me back to prison."

Dina's eyes widen a little. "What? Mike, we haven't found Cameron yet, and you know that Jonathan is our best chance."

Mike looks down. "It's not my decision. I wasn't even supposed to bring him here."

Dina sighs. "Mike, could you give us a second?" He nods and walks off.

Dina turns to Jonny once he's gone. "Listen, whenever you need more help, you just say when, okay? Go find Cam, alright?"

Jonathan smiles. "I'll be fine. I got this." Dina starts to reply, but he stops her. "I... I kinda wanna talk to you about something else..."

"Is this about Mike?"

"Yeah," Jonny says, "it is. I... I'm happy for you guys. You make a great couple." Dina seems surprised by that, so he shrugs a little, smiling. "I had a lot of time to think about things, and... we're both moving on. And that's a good thing - it was great while it lasted, but..."

Dina grins knowingly. "You like someone, don't you? You met someone."

He blushes. "Dina-"

"You do! Well, it had to have been in the past two days-" She gasps, cutting herself off. "It is Kay?"

Jonny shakes his head. "No."

She grins even broader, her eyes twinkling with amusement. "It's Y/N, isn't it?"

"I mean, I'm pretty sure we had a mutual dislike for each other, but then she started talking to me about Cam. I think she likes him-"

"I'm gonna stop you right there," Dina says, holding out a hand. "She doesn't like him. She told me so; I asked." She laughs at the relieved expression on Jonny's face. "You'd be cute together."

"Yeah, once I get out of prison."

Dina only smiles. "You will. Now, go find Cameron."

////

"It's a diamond!" you shout, breathless and running into the room. Kay, Mike, and Jonathan are sitting down, talking everything over. You don't notice him at first.

"What?" Kay asks.

"Lynx! It's a diamond!"

"Slow down," Mike says.

You still don't notice Jonny, excited about your discovery after researching the auction online. "Lance said today's challenge was about a patient who bragged about holding the key to a hidden fortune. But there's an auction at Devlin's tomorrow night. The Rockefeller Collection; jewelry, artwork, expensive stuff. MW must've known she had to steal something from the collection, but she just didn't know what. Jonny figured it out - item 71 on the auction list, the Lynx diamond."

Kay and Mike stand, Jonny following suit. He grins at you. "Nice work."

"Th- Jonathan?" you ask, just registering his presence.

He laughs as you trail behind Mike and Kay, heading out. "Hey, Y/N."

"What? How? Why?"

"Kay talked to Deakins," Jonny says, shrugging. "Told her they needed me to stop whatever MW's planning. She said what you said before helped her argument, so thanks."

"You're welcome..." you trail off, shaking your head a little as if to clear it. Jonathan smiles to himself, now 100% sure that's a habit of yours; he's seen you do it a few times. You look up at him as you reach the car. "What?"

He climbs into the backseat. "Nothing."

////

You went to talk to the man in charge of the auction, who refused to cancel it because how good security is. "We have one of the most state-of-the-art security systems in the world. We have facial-recognition software and motion sensors so sensitive, they can catch a single hair falling from the ceiling. And once the diamond is locked away in our vault, we have a 6-inch steel door, thermal imaging, our own army. And if all else fails, the preservation system sucks all the air out of the vault."

Basically, you've got to go undercover.

It takes some debating, but Kay finally decides to send you in with Jonathan since it worked so well the last time. You know, before he tried to kill MW. Kay and Mike are gonna guard the vault with some of Devlin's security guards. She makes you wear her watch - the one connected to Jonny's tracker.

Dina dresses both of you, him in a tux, you in a fancy black dress. He's certain everything Dina did was on purpose now that she knows he likes you.

There was something there from the start - the first time he looked at you. But you obviously had a problem with him. And it amused him. Then, once you'd warmed up to him, that something, whatever it is, grew stronger.

A crush? He sounds like he's in middle school, but he's not sure how else to describe it.

The point is, you look amazing, and he tells you so. He manages to keep the nervous stutter out of his voice, so it just sounds sincere as opposed to the teasing tone you would've expected.

You blush. "Th-Thanks."

////

When you get there, you have to wait in line for the facial recognition portion of the security system. You almost get deja vu as you wait in silence, just looking at him. You'd say he cleans up nice, but he already looked good beforehand.

Suddenly, he bumps your shoulder with his. "Thinking about Cam again?"

You've been caught, but you keep your cool. "No, actually. I was thinking about you."

It takes him a second to respond, the words getting caught in his throat. He's flustered. "I, uh-"

"You're just so not-him, it's astounding," you add, taking his reaction as a bad thing.

Jonny's moment of shock over, he returns to his normal, sarcastic self. "That's kind of how people work; not-being each other."

You snort lightly. "It's a breath of fresh air, honestly; Cam's pretty annoying."

"You don't know the half of it." You make it to the front and are let in, then he hooks his arm with yours in a casual yet formal way. "You're supposed to be my date; we gotta look the part," he says in response to your quizzical look.

You wonder if he's just playing the part, then shake your head a little to clear it, turning all business. "With all this security," you say, thinking out loud, "someone's gotta be in this room helping her."

"Who are the guests?" He knows you know - you did research with Jordan before you left.

You start pointing people out. "That's Philip Edwards. Claims he's a distant member of the Royal Family. Mostly clean."

"I don't like him."

"There's the Prince of Montenegro, Stefan Prifot.
He's worth more money than everybody in this room combined."

"Don't like him, either."

"Over by the door is Henri Morel. French international financier. We think he's connected to some illegal activities, but he's also a regular here at Devlin's." You look over at Jonny and see the look on his face. "Let me guess: You don't like him, either?"

He ignores the question. "If they're smart, they'll do this after the auction when there are fewer eyes on the diamond. And if Cam did have anything to do with this, it'll be fast."

You speak into your earpiece to Dina and Jordan. "Do you have eyes on us?"

"Yeah," Dina answers. "We've got you and every other inch of this place."

"How are Gunter, Kay, and Mike?" you ask.

"They're with the diamond in the vault."

Jonathan looks at you and he can immediately tell you're nervous. He leans towards you a little. "Hey, calm down. It's gonna be fine."

You nod a little, walking over to take your seats when a couple stops you, thinking Jonny's Cameron. He gets roped into doing a few magic tricks, and while he does, you watch to see who looks over.

"Henri," you whisper, sitting down. Jonathan nods in response and you sit, watching the auction. Your leg starts bouncing uncontrollably due to nerves. Suddenly, Jonathan puts a hand on your knee.

You're speechless, but it doesn't matter because he leans over and explains himself immediately. "You might give us away if you keep doing that. And, as an added bonus, it really sells the... lie that we're dating."

He starts to move his hand, but you stop him, taking his retreating hand in your own. He looks at you quizzically as you put his hand back, leaving yours on top of his. You lean your head on his shoulder to make your whispering look more casual. "There's no way I'm going to be able to act calm; I'm gonna give us away."

He nods once and sits up straight, but you leave your head where it is.

He finds it easy to sit that way with you so casually. As if you're that familiar with each other. And he finds himself wishing you really were.

That was the feeling - you. The prospect, the idea of a new relationship. With you. And he wants that more than ever now.

You don't have to play up the date aspect of your cover this much, and you know it. But you are.

Then, the Lynx diamond comes out. Johnathan starts to sit up, move his hand, but you stop him; it'd look suspicious. So, he sits back and you both try to discreetly scan the crowd, mainly focusing on Henri.

"We'll start the bidding at $1 million," the auctioneer says. Somebody raises their paddle. "We have $1 million over here." Another person raises their paddle. "$1.1 million. Do we have $1.2 million?" Another paddle raises. "$1.2 million over there. $1.3 million?" Another paddle. "$1.3 million." And another. "$2 million. Do we have $2.1 million?" A pause. "$2.1 million?" Jonathan raises his paddle. "$2.1 million right there."

"What are you doing?" you ask.

He shrugs. "I always wanted to do that."

You laugh a little, then the smile is wiped off your face by Dina over the comms. "Guys, I'm losing cameras. Something's happening."

"It's happening," you whisper, sitting up instinctively. Jonathan's hand slides off your knee. "They're taking the diamond now."

Jonny, looking straight at Henri, whispers to you, "It's him.."

The lights cut off and alarms start blaring. It's too dark to see any details, but a dark shadow - Henri - runs for the diamond, and Jonathan is up in an instant. He tackles Henri the ground. There's a scuffle, a few knocked over chairs, and Henri wriggles free, fires a few gunshots in the air, and runs. All in a matter of seconds.

The diamond is still there, sitting on its stand, so you grab it and run to Jonathan and help him up. "You okay?"

"I'm fine," he says, out of breath. "What do we do now?"

"Secure the diamond," you answer, making a beeline for the vault. You talk into the comms. "Dina, what do you see?"

"Not much," she replies. "The electrical system was hacked by someone inside the building. Jordan is checking the comms panels right now." There's a pause, then Dina speaks again, panicked. "Guys, guys, Jordan needs help. He's on the East Side hallway."

"On our way," you reply, reaching the vault. You give the diamond to Mike and take off, Jonathan behind you. Gunter decides to go with you.

You find him on the ground. Jonny helps him up. "Jordan! You all right?"

He nods. "Oh, that French guy can punch."

"Where did he go?" you ask.

He points down the hall. "That way, towards the exit."

Mike's voice comes over the comms. "We have a situation. They're not leaving without the diamond."

You look back at Jonny. "Get to the vault, help Mike. I'll go after Henri."

"I'll take Jordan back to Dina," Gunter says, and you go your separate ways.

"We still don't have picture inside the vault," Dina says. There's a pause. "Mike? Is everything alright, Mike?"

There's no response, but you keep running.

Jonny makes it to the vault and finds Henri inside. Meanwhile, Mike, Kay, and two other men are on the ground, unconscious. Henri's trying to steal the diamond.

Jonny kicks him. "That's for Jordan." Then, he punches him. "That's for Kay." A second punch, knocking him out cold. "And that's for Mike." He takes the diamond and starts to leave.

A gun cocks behind him. "You're persistent, Jonathan." The Mystery Woman. He turns and she holds the gun to his chest, taking his ear piece out with her free hand. "Just you and me now."

"Where's Cam?" Jonny asks.

"Close. He's alive. Don't worry. So are they." She's referring to Mike, Kay, and the two security guards.

Jonny only gets angrier. "Where is he?"

"I chose the wrong brother. Should've been him in that prison, not you. Come with me. We could do great things. I think I know you, Jonathan. All that anger you feel isn't about me. It's about your life, everything that's happened to you. I can turn that into something real."

Jonny's fists clench, but he tries to calm himself down. "Where's my brother?"

"Give me the diamond," MW says, holding her hand out. He has no choice but to hand it over. "In two minutes that vault door will seal shut, and all the oxygen will be sucked out of the room. Now, you can come with me, or you can save them."

"Dina, I'm outside the building," you say as you pass through the exit door.

"Do you see anything?" she asks.

You shake your head even though she can't see you. "No, not much. Do you?"

"I still don't have half the monitors up. But I've got a few. The lights still haven't come back on. And I can't get ahold of Jonathan or Mike on comms."

You sigh. "Okay. I'm going back in-" Then, your watch starts beeping. Your heart nearly skips a beat. Jonathan.

Dina can hear it. "Is that your watch? Is Jonny running?"

Your brows furrow and you feel a pang of betrayal. "He wouldn't." All you can think about is the way he so casually hooked his arm with yours, his hand on your knee, your hand on his. "Check the exterior cameras."

There's a short pause. "A security guard just left the west side of the building."

You take off running and find him, his back to you as he tries to escape. "Jonathan, stop!" Your gun is raised, but it's not cocked. You couldn't shoot him - you know that. He definitely knows that, as perceptive as he is.

But when he turns around, hands raised in surrender, it's not him at all. It's the Mystery Woman. She smiles. "Agent Y/L/N."

You shake your head a little, tempted to laugh dryly. "Step towards me." She does, stepping into the light, and you can't help but smirk. She's stepped directly into a security camera's line of sight. "Now smile for the camera."

She looks up at the camera, then back at you. "How'd you find me?" Then, she sighs, just realizing what happened. She reaches into the duffel bag on her shoulder and pulls out Jonny's tracker.

"He's smart, isn't he?" you remark, still smirking.

She smirks, too. "Right now, he's in the vault, trying to save five people before they're locked in and the oxygen is sucked out. However, I forgot to tell him one crucial thing."

You pause. "What?"

////

Jonny's pulled out Kay and Mike and one security guard when you shout over the comms. "Everybody get to the vault!"

"Depressurization will begin in 15 seconds," an automated voice in the vault says. Jonny pulls the other security guard out, then starts to run back to grab the last man - Henri.

"No! No! Come on!" Henri moves and Jonny shouts his name. "Henri! Get up! Henri!" Henri staggers to the door, looking out as Gunter and Jordan arrive at the vault. Jonny turns to them. "The vault sucked the air out. I couldn't save him."

"With the security systems down, they can't open the door," Jordan says.

Jonny runs his hands through his hair. "I can't just let him die."

You make it to the vault, out of breath. You're so hyped up on adrenaline and frantic that you crash straight into Jonathan. He tries to steady you. You inhale deeply, trying to get enough air to speak. "It's not Henri!"

"What?" Jonny asks, his hands still on your shoulders even though you're standing just fine.

You see the man in the vault pull off his very convincing mask. Jonny turns. "Cam?! Cam!" He runs to the door, banging on the glass. "Cameron!" Cam falls to the floor, out of your line of sight.

"Get back!" you shout, aiming your gun at the door. Jonny does as you say, and Jordan also takes a step back for good measure.

You cock it and shoot, drowning out Gunter saying, "It won't work."

He's right. Nothing happens.

Jonny runs to the door again. "Come on, Cam! Get up! Come on!" Cameron pushes himself to his feet. Jonny nods. "That's it, Cam! Turn the wheel! Turn the wheel!" Cameron grabs the wheel on the other side of the door and turns it weakly, using all the strength he has. "Come on, Cam!"

He's so close...

He slumps over, turning the wheel the rest of the way. Jonny throws the door open and starts dragging him out. He coughs and tries to sit up. Relief washes over you and you slump against the wall, your nerves shot.

Jonny, still kneeling next to Cameron, looks over at you, a relieved smile on his face. You weakly smile back.

////

The next day, after Cam had a hospital check up, he was taken to the FBI offices for questions with Deakins.

He helped MW steal a diamond, and, believe it or not, that's pretty illegal.

You're waiting with Jonny in another room, both of you silent. You can't stop thinking about what happened now that you've slept.

You ran. You ran from the Mystery Woman to save Cameron.

"I'm sorry," you suddenly say. Jonny wouldn't've heard you if the room wasn't so quiet.

His brows furrow. "For what?"

You look over at him, guilt written all over your face. "I let her go. I let MW go-"

"To save Cameron," Jonny cuts you off. "You don't need to apologize for that."

"But if I hadn't, you wouldn't have to go back."

"Y/N, me being free isn't worth Cam's life, okay? You didn't do anything wrong."

You nod a little, looking back down at the table, still thinking. "Okay..."

Half an hour later, Cameron leaves the interrogation room. Turns out, MW has a fake diamond. Her plan was to replace the real diamond with a fake during the auction, and that's what Cam did. That was the diamond you handed to Mike.

That was the one Jonny gave MW.

And, of course, Cam did it for Jonny - MW had security footage from the night she framed Jonny that would exonerate him. Cam never got it.

After he tells you and Jonny what happened, Jonny has to go back. You're sitting with Cam as he and Mike head out.

"I don't know what happened while I was gone," Cam says, "but I see that look in your eyes."

"I don't know what you're talking about," you mumble.

He grins. "Go after him, Y/N/N."

You hesitate for a split second, then run after Mike and Jonny, just barely making it before Mike leaves.

"What are you doing?" he asks.

You climb into the backseat; Jonathan's in the front. "I'm coming with, obviously."

Mike's eyebrows raise a fraction as he starts the car. "Okay..."

Jonny smirks.

////

When you make it to the prison, Mike takes Jonny's tracking anklet off and says he'll wait in the car.

You pass the front gates, two guards letting you in. Jonny chuckles as you walk inside. "You know, I don't really need an escort farther than those gates."

"But you want one, don't you?" you shoot back.

"As long as it's you," he says, and it's more of a mumble than his previous teasing comment.

You blush, still walking with him when you make it to one of the visiting areas, a large room containing two chairs and a table. You've never been inside, but Cam and Jonny often frequent it. A guard looks over at you. "Are you finished with the prisoner, ma'am?"

You shake your head after a moment's hesitation. "I-I still need to speak with him."

He leads you and Jonny into the visiting area and closes the door behind you. You stop once you're a foot or so inside the room. Jonny leans back against the table in the middle and crosses his arms, smirking. "And what is it you need to speak with me about?"

You can't think of anything to fire back on the spot. "I-I don't know," you mumble. "FBI stuff?"

He chuckles. "What classifies as 'FBI stuff'?" You only shrug. He uncrosses his arms and moves from the table, walking toward you. "Would this 'FBI stuff' happen to have something to do with you... and me?"

Again, you shrug, but your blush deepens. "...Maybe." You get flustered by how close he is, and you can't seem to make eye contact.

"Well," he says, and his voice is almost a whisper, "I know you said you wanted to speak with me, but... When are we ever gonna get the chance again, with me in here and you out there?"

You think you know what he's insinuating, but you're not entirely sure. You finally look at him and he leans forward a little.

Almost on instinct, your hands find his shoulders, then slide down to his collar. You lean that much closer, nervous and excited all at the same time. Your stomach ties itself in knots.

And then he kisses you and you immediately kiss back. He wraps his arms around you and pulls you closer. Your arms go around his neck and it feels like it lasts forever and a few seconds all at once.

And then you pull away, trying to catch your breath.

He smirks at first, but then it breaks into a smile. "I'd say see you around, but..."

"Don't worry," you reply, unable to stop a smile from growing on your own face, "I'll visit."

He kisses you again, there and then gone, and you finally let go of him and start to walk out. He stops you. "Y/N?"

"Yeah?"

There's a pause while he tries to think of what to say. "Keep George safe for me."

You smile. "I'll try my best. Fred."

He smiles back as you walk out the door, the guard giving both of you a strange look.
