A singular light in a dark world. Do you follow?

It may be a way out, a way to a better life or freedom from the monsters. Could it be what all have been searching for centuries? The path out of this land of eternal darkness.

As it gets closer a ladder appears showing the way, this must be it away from this place of nothing but what each imagines. As it is thought it is created around, able to be built or destroyed as one wished. Though for those who want a way out, or think of nothing, see nothing. The light is the road to peace, and truth, reality. 

Slowly, traveling up the ladder towards to large light spot, farther from the pain and fear as it engulfs all with its brightness, and warmth. Once it disappears the horrors are shown. 

This light... the dark was protection and a safe haven compared to the view any who chose it would see. If only they could return from this disaster, though the had chosen this. Fear consumes these who see, those who chose to leave the Elysium they were placed in to save their own lives. Devoured in the evils shown as the hide, run, anything to survive. Though sadly they can not and are ended.

The dark was not as evil as they thought, not all light it the savior as some destroy. The Dark was the comfort, trying to save those who could be. 

Not all is at it seems. What could it be?
