Harry loves his job, truly. It's just that some days are better than others. He can handle his eighteen second form students a lot of the time, but today was just...it was shitty, to put it simply.
The coffee machine in the teacher's lounge was broken, and he stained his shirt, and a kid (who has a lot of behavioural issues in general, but is always okay towards Harry), told him that he hated him. He's just exhausted. He can't wait to lay down in bed and vent to his boyfriend.
Sighing to himself in defeat, he opens the door to the flat, longing for his bed. Upon swinging the door open, he is met with his boyfriend, Louis, standing there. There's candles, like, everywhere, making the whole room glow.
"Welcome home, baby," Louis grins, lighter still in his hand from the candles.
"Lou," Harry laughs a little, eyebrows furrowed in confusion. He sets his rucksack down. "What're you doing?"
"What, I can't be romantic once in a while?" Louis holds his free hand out to Harry. Harry smiles wearily, taking Louis' hand and letting him pull him closer. Louis presses his lips to Harry's, and Harry practically melts. Once they separate, Louis squeezes his hand and says "I got you dinner. C'mon."
"I love you so much," Harry smiles. Louis just squeezes his hand again and leads him out to be the balcony of their flat. There's a folding table and some plastic chairs, takeaway from Harry's favourite restaurant sitting there.
"I was gonna cook, but, y'know," Louis shrugs. "Not my strongest suit."
"I'm kind of thankful you didn't," Harry teases. Louis makes a face and flips him off, and Harry laughs. Huffing, Louis pulls a chair out for Harry.
"Just sit," He sighs. Harry giggles and sits down, feeling Louis kiss the top of his head.
"Thank you, Lou," Harry says softly, Louis sitting down across from him. "I needed this today."
"Bad day?" Louis asks, furrowing his eyebrows.
"Mhm," Harry twists his mouth.
"Well," Louis grins up at him, opening his takeaway container and grinning over at Harry. "Not anymore!"
Harry grins back at him. "You're seriously the best," He says, feeling so soft right now. He loves Louis a lot, obviously, but sometimes there are waves of appreciation that get so overwhelming he doesn't even know what to do with himself. "What did I do to deserve you?"
"Feel like I should be saying that to you," Louis' grin widens. Harry laughs, and Louis' smile turns prideful. "Okay, so, listen. Y'know how I've been hanging out with Niall a bunch recently?" Harry furrows his eyebrows but he nods. "He taught me how to play guitar, and I wrote a song. For you. D'ya wanna hear?"
"Yes," Harry can't help but smile. Louis stands up from the table, grabbing Niall's guitar from where it's leaning against the wall. Harry didn't even notice it before.
"Okay, it might be a little rough," Louis strums a few strings on the guitar, clearing his throat. "But I did work really hard trying to get it ready for tonight."
Once again, Harry furrows his eyebrows a little, but he nods and waits patiently while Louis gets himself ready. Why does he need it ready for tonight? Softly, Louis starts to sing. "I wanna write you a song, one as beautiful as you are sweet, with just a hint of pain for the feeling that I get when you are gone, I wanna write you a song,"
Harry softens as he leans back in his chair, endeared by how nervous Louis seems. "I wanna lend you my coat, one as soft as your cheek, so when the world gets cold you will have a hiding place you can go, I wanna lend you my coat," He looks up at Harry sheepishly, and Harry grins back at him, trying to reassure him. "Everything I need I get from you, giving back is all I wanna do,"
Louis' voice is so sweet, and soft, and Harry could melt right here. The sun is setting behind them as Louis sings. "I wanna build you a boat, one as strong as you are free, so anytime you think that your heart is gonna sink you know it won't, I wanna build you a boat,"
"Everything I need, I get from you," Harry's getting a bit emotional, if he's honest. He can't believe he has Louis all to himself. "Giving back is all I wanna do,"
"I wanna write you a song, one that'll make you marry me," Louis' voice shakes a little. "And anytime I'm gone, you can listen to my voice and sing along, I wanna write you a song."
"I loved it, Lou," Harry says softly, grinning up at him. Before Harry can even process it, Louis is on one knee in front of him. Shakily, he pulls a ring box out of his back pocket and opens it.
"So, did it work?" He asks, laughing a little as Harry's eyes go wide. "Will you marry me?"
"Wait, Louis, I-" Harry can't breathe. He has to be dreaming. "Y-Yes. Of course I'll marry you, Louis."
"Really?" Louis' face lights up. All Harry can do is nod. He tries to say something, but nothing will come out. Louis takes the ring out and slips it onto Harrys finger, and Harry proceeds to tackle him to the ground, face buried in his shoulder.
"I love you so, so much, Lou," Harry mumbles into Louis' skin, and Louis laughs fondly.
"I love you too, H," He kisses the top of Harry's head, and when Harry sits back up to see his face, his eyes are watering. He grabs Harry's hand and kisses the back of it. "Thank you for everything."
