Chapter 8: Training begins

I waited for what seemed like hours for Rogan to finish with the younger people. I was incredibly board, and found myself fiddling with the grass at my feet and thinking up random stories I could write when I got back. I wished my laptop was still with me, then I would be able to put these thoughts to use.

Finally Rogan had finished. He walked over to me and smiled.

"Finally," I mumbled.

"I heard that," said Rogan smiling.

I rolled my eyes, "So... are we going to start now?"

"Yep," said Rogan smiling.

I stood up eagely and summoned my swords to my hand.

Rogan raised his eyebrow, "Where not doing that yet."

I slumped.

"We're going to do some warm up exercises!" he said with fake enthusiasm, "First of is a quick jog around the village!"

He started to run, "Come on, haven't got all day!"

I started to run after him, after making the swords disappear of course.

'Should of known,' I thought.

'Should of know what?' said Reflamen.

'Doesn't matter,' I replied.

But Reflamen quickly got the information through my mind.

'Ha Ha, you have to do laps around the village!'  he said.

'Yeah, but I'm pretty sure you're going to have to start soon,'  I replied.

'Na! I'm still young, I don't get trained yet,' said Reflamen

I was starting to gain on Rogan, I had always been a runner, both with long distance and short, but I found myself starting to loose my breath quickly.

'I wouldn't be so sure,' I replied to Reflamen.

At that moment Relfamen heard the crash of a dragon landing. I looked through his eyes and found him staring at a large purple dragon. It was Sophire. She bent her head down to the little dragons that were playing around. Reflamens mind was entered by a strange presence.

'Come with me hatchlings,' said Sophire, 'Your training starts now.'

I heard Reflamen groan.

'Told you,' I said.

I then shut Reflamen from my mind and focused on catching up to Rogan. It took a while but eventually caught up to him, but I was almost out of breath.

"How... long... have we... got to... go?" I said gasping for air.

"We're about half way," said Rogan casually. He wasn't even slightly out of breath.

I groaned but kept running. For some reason when I start running I find it almost impossible to stop, unless I finish the race, in which case I usually colapse afterwoods. So I kept running, even speeding up a little.

It took about ten more minutes of running to finally reach the end. I collapsed on the ground heaving, trying to get the air back into my lungs. Rogan stood over me with a raised eyebrow.

"I never said it was time to rest," he said, "Come on, fifty push ups."

'WHAT!?' I thought, 'I can bearly do fifty when I haven't just run a hundred miles, let alone now!'

'Quit complaining,' said Reflamen, he seemed out of breath as well, 'I just got thrown of a cliff and told to fly.'

'And did you?' I asked.

'More or less,'  said Reflamen, seeming slightly embarrassed, 'But it was exhausting work getting back up!'

I looked into Reflamen's memories and found that he had, in fact, managed to fly, but had rammed into the cliff head first. I smiled.

"I said fifty push ups!" said Rogan.

I groaned and rolled over onto my stomach, then pushed myself up with my arms, then let myself down again. Up, down, up, down.

When I reached ten I collapsed, exhausted.

"I never said stop! Keep going, you still have forty more to do!" said Rogan.

I pushed myself up again, then I came back down. It took an hour to finally finish the push ups.

"Alright, that's enough. Ten minute break then be back here," said Rogan.

I nodded.

Rogan walked of towards a bakery. It was about lunch time so I pushed myself up and walked after him.

We were greated by the smell of fresh bread being pulled from the fire. The baker turned towards us. He looked at me, battered and exhausted, then at Rogan, who had barely broken a swet.

"Another dragon rider?" he asked.

Rogan nodded.

He looked over to me, "He's been working you hard I see."

I nodded and smiled. I felt like I was going to colapse, so I leaned on one of the posts holdng up the building.

"What's your name, young rider," asked the baker, passing a loaf of bread to Rogan.

"Derrick," I replied.

"Another Derrick, I see, you're named after a great worrier, kid, make sure you live that name," he said.

I surpressed my annoyance at the word 'kid' and nodded, "I will."

"He will alright," said Rogan, "He's already a great fighter, all we need to do is get his fitness up and teach him magic and he'll be doing fine."

"Are... Rogan," I said with a smile, "I already know some magic."

He looked at me with a raised eyebrow, "Do you now? Well, when we get back to the training field I'll be sure to test you."

I nodded, this was going to be fun.

"But I'm going to need some energy," I said, "I'm spent after the sor called 'fitness' you put me through."

Rogan raised his eyebrow, an expression which he seemed to like.

"Alright then," he looked at the baker, "I'm sure you have something for that, unless you've run out."

The baker smiled, showing his yellow teeth, "I've got just the thing."

He bent down and reached into one of his many draws and pulled out a jar of these strange green beads. I immediately recognised them. They were some sort of energy food, they tasted discusting, like raw flesh, but they gave enough energy to fuel a man for at least a day of non stop movement, like a battle, which in some cases is extremely useful, and is one of the main reasons the resistance hasen't fallen yet.

I gladly took one. I put it in my mouth and swallowed the bead, trying to get it past my toungue as quickly as possible. I had no luck, and gagged, trying not to loose my breakfast.

The baker smiled, "Whatch out, it tastes like a raw pig."

I smiled and nodded, "I know, that's why I swallowed quickly."

"This boy's smart," said the baker, "He has hope yet."

We left the baker's with a smile, and renued energy, I felt like I could run for miles.

"Okay," said Rogan, "Don't get used to those things. You're only allowed to have one if you have no energy left in you. This is going to be a rare accurance, once you're not completely exhausted after the morning exercises."

I nodded. I knew this was how Rogan worked.

"You said you knew some magic," continued Rogan, "Let's see what you can do."

Rogan put out his hand and an earth pillar rose from the ground.

"Destroy it," said Rogan.

I smiled eagely and drew back my hand, focused, then threw my hand forward, sending a fireball straight towards the earth pillar. The fireball completely shattered it.

Rogan took a step back in surprise.

"Told you," I said smiling.

"Wow," said Rogan, "It usually taked months for a dragon rider to learn how to even summon a flicker of fire, and you can summon a fireball powerful enough to destroy rock! I think I've underestimated you."

"I'm not surprised," I said, "But I can do much more then that."

Rogan looked at me with his eyebrow raised, "Let's see what you can do then."

I smiled at him then closed my eyes, and focused. I heard Rogan gasp and I opened my eyes. I looked at my hand, and sure enough, fire had spread over it.

"What do you think?" I said with a smile.

"You're definitly more powerful then I thought," said Rogan, "I'm wouldn't be surprised if you were the fire mage."

A fire mage was a person with the power of fire. They mastered it very quickly and became one of the mot powerful people in the world. There were eight different types of magic: fire, earth, wind, electricity, water, will, darkness and shadow. Each was extremely powerful and all of them had a mage to look after them, as well as a special blade, or blades in case of fire and wind. Shadow and darkness are very similiar, but the difference is darkness is usually dark energy, and it's completely black. Shadow is more a transparent black, and has the power to move silently. Both of them are normaly seen as evil power, but sometimes there is a good person that masters one of these powers, like Derrick with shadow. Will was more the power of being able to create things, destroy things, pick up people, or hit them, all without touching anything. Will is impossible to see, and also the hardest to control.

"Can you do anything else?" asked Rogan.

"I cast a waterball once, but that just ended in me being completely exhausted," I said.

"Okay," Rogan seemed thoughtful.

"Can you try electricity?" he said.

I knew why he said that. Electrcicty was the closest to fire out of all the powers. I focused on electricity and closed my eyes, imagining a yellow lightning crossing through my fingers, imagining the tingling feeling that eletricity gave of when it was in use, and sure enough, there it was running through my fingers. I opened my eyes and thrust my hand forward, letting out a zigzag of powerful energy. It struck the earth pillar Rogan had summoned and blew it to bits.

Rogan nodded his head.

"Wind!" he barked.

I knew what he ment. I shifted my pasition so that I was standing straight, whith my hands by my side. Wind required a different technique then fire and electricity, luckily I knew every technique in the book.

Rogan summoned a new earth pillar. I closed my eyes and consentrated on drawring all the wind in the surrounding area towards me. Before long a mini tornado was surrounding me. The wind ripped at my clothes, almost throughing me of balance, but I stayed still, like a rock. Eventually, when I had gathered enough energy, I opened my eyes and thrust both my hands forward. Intstead of the wind coming from my hands, like the fire and electricity, it came from the worlwind around me, throughing a huge gust forward. The earth pillar was ripped from the ground before being smashed into peices.

"Darkness!" Rogan yelled, and he summoned another earth pillar.

I was slightly surprised at the command, becasue darkness was seen as an evil power.

'All well,' I thought.

I put my hands at my side then consintrated again, letting the power build up. I imagined the pitch blackness of darkness to swell up on my hands. I felt a strange energy engolf my hands. I opened my eyes and thrust both my hands forward again. A dark beam shot from them and shattered the earth pillar.

"Will," barked Rogan again.

'Thought so,' I thought to myself.

This time I got down in a stance that someone would do in karate or kung fu, and instead of closing my eyes I completely focused them on the earth pillar some twenty metres away from me. I let all my energy to my right hand, which was drawn back, like I was ready to punch someone. I suddenly felt an overwelming force come from my right hand. I punched forward, with an open hand. The earth pillar exploded into a thousand pieces.

I looked at Rogan and raised my eyebrow. He looked back at me with a studieing gaze.

"I think that's enough for today," he said, "Report back here at seven thirty tomorrow morning."
