Chapter 5: Back to the real world
Beep! Beep! Beep!
I groaned, trying to get that annoying sound out of my head. Something heavy was draped over me, I felt warm, alomost hot, and extremely comfortable. I snuggled deeper into this warm embrace.
Beep! Beep! Beep!
I sat straight up, looking for the sound of the annoying noise.
Beep! Beep! Beep!
'Where is that coming from,' I looked around for the annoying noise and my eyes fell on a screen. It looked like some sort of carciac monoter, one of those things next to your bed in the hospital, the ones that keep beeping and measure your heart rate. Wait a minute! I'm in a hospital?
I looked around to see that I really was in a hospital room, with white beds and all those cords around the place.I noticed that the 'warm imbrace' was really just one of those hospital dooners, who new they could be so comfy.
There was only one problem, I was quite sure that hospitals weren't in my book. I frowned, thinking that I ust have added them in somewhere but nothing came to me, and where was Rogan, he wouldn't have gone far.
I threw the covers of me and started to stand up, for some reason my legs felt very week, as if i've been laying down for days. I sat on the edge of the bed and put my bare feet to the floor. I flinched when I touched the growned, it was very cold. I stood up and almost fell back to the bed again.
I sighed, 'Well this is annoying.'
Suddenly a pang of lonliness hit me. I was honestly quite surprised, I've never felt this way before, it's almost as if something has been taken from my mind. I was nearly panicing now.
'What's happening to me!' I thought, nealry freaking out.
'CALM DOWN DERRICK!' I yelled at myself.
I took a deep breath, 'Okay Derrick think, how did you end up here? What's going? What might of coursed me to end up here?'
I remembered feeling dizzy as I entered the cave, then fainting when Reflamen hatched. Reflamen! He must be around here somewhere! I got up of the bed and walked quickly towards the white curtain that was blocking my view. I flung open the curtain and looked around. A nurse in a white dress was standing on the other side of the curtain, assessing another patient. She froze when she saw me burst from the curtains, with only the white hospital gown covering me. Ignored her I looked around frantically for the little dragon.
' Wait, I can use my mind, Reflamen! Reflamen, where are you!' I yelled with my mind.
Suddenly a burst of colour filled the part of my mind that was missing, along with a bungle of happiness. I instantlly felt warm all over. I then noticed the nurse staring at me with utter shock.
"Sorry," I said, "Aahh... I'll just go back into... yeah."
I went back to the bed I was in and clsed the curtian behind me. After I closed the curtain I heard a shuffle of footsteps and I couldn't help but imagine the nurse running to find the doctor. I laughed at the thought.
I smiled as I felt Refalmen's presence searching my mind.
'Where are you?' I asked Reflamen, hoping that he would be able to answer. I didn't expect him to, he was, after all, only a baby dragon. Although he will probably be big enough to ride in the next month, and be able to talk within the week.
The answer I got was another wave of joyfulness. I smiled, I couldn't help it, the dragon was sending waves of warmth through me. Suddenly the dragons emotions chaged from happiness, to surprise then a deep worry.
'Reflamen?' I said with my mind.
The dragon seemed to be thinking deeply. I frowned then tried to find him by sending out my mid, like a tracking beckon, all dragon riders did it to find there dragon. For some reason the 'signal' I got back was that Reflamen was right next to me.
I looked around, even under the bed, but Reflamen wasn't anywhere near me. I frowned again, starting to get nervous, what's goign on?
"He just burst out of the room, like he was looking for something," said a feminin voice from just across the curtain, "He was fast asleep then he just bursts out from the curtain as soon as I go to another patient."
"It's ok," said a man's voice, "It's ok, he took a massive hit from the lightning bolt, he might be a bit crazy."
' What are they talking about,' I thought, 'Are they talking about me.'
"If he's awake I'll talk to him, but he might have been sleep walking," said the man in a reassuring tone.
There was silence, then the curtian was draw back to reveal the man and the nurse from before. The man looked a lot like a doctor, glasses, white coat and even a pare of stethscope around his neck.
"Are, your awake," said the doctor, "You can call me Dr. Antino. So how you feeling?"
I frowned, trying to think of a 'Doctor Antino' in my story, nothing came to mind.
"Aah, good," I said, replying to the doctor's question.
"Good, good," said the doctor.
We sat in silence for a second.
"You gave the nurse quite a scare back there," said the doctor.
I couldn't help but smile at that, it was actually quite funny.
"I didn't see her there, I was looking for Reflamen," I said.
The man raised an eyebrow, "And who's Reflamen?"
'A dragon,' I was about to say when I stopped, something didn't seem right.
"Can ask, where am I," I asked.
The doctor smiled, "Of course, you are in the best hospital in Brunstown, the one and only, Brunstown hospital."
The doctor spoke as if it was some sort of hotel or famous singer, but something he said made me freeze.
"Brunstown?" I asked nervously.
"Yep," said Dr. Antino.
'If I'm in Brunstown, then where is Rogan and The Resistance?' I thought.
"How long have I been unconscious?" I asked.
"Just over three days," said Antino.
I almost froze, 'It couldn't be a dream, could it. No, it couldn't have been a dream. It was all so real, and I can still feel Reflamen's mind in my own. Then how could have I been here for three days, I was exploring with The Resistance, and I was only there for two and a half days, unless I was unconcsious for the first day, but what's happened? Will I nerver be able to go back, or will I be stuck here. Ok, Derrick calm down, your starting to make Dr. Antino nervous.'
I looked back up to Antino and managed to smile.
"Are you ok?" asked Antino again, "Didn't you want to be here?"
"No, no" I said quickly, "It's nothing, don't worry."
The doctor nodded, "Ok, I'll ring your mom and tell her that you've woken up."
He took out an iphone from his pocket and diled a number in.
A faint voice answered.
"Hello," said th doctor, "I just rang to tell you that you're sons' woken up. Yep. Yep. Thankyou, ok, by."
He put the phone back into his pocket, "Ok, your mum should be here in around half-an-hour."
I nodded.
"Until then, your computer some how managed to survive the wreckage, it's on your bedisde table, if you want it."
I nodded again, my laptop managed to survive, that's awsome. The doctor left and I turned to my laptop. I picked it up dusted of the top of it, just because it survived the crash, doesn't mean it came out perfect. There was a dent on the middle of it and the 's' key was broken in half.
I pressed the power on button and waited for a few seconds for it to turn on. When it did I was surprised to find that it had full power, the lightning bolt must of charged it, or something. I tiped in my password and it went to the computer screen. I stared at the screen for a second. It had a waterfall background and a few icons on the right hand corner of the screen.
I moved the arrow to one of the icons and hovered over it for a second. It was a word document with the word 'Forbidden Blades' written underneath. It was the name of the book I was writing, on acount of Derrick's forbidden blades.
I sighed and double clicked on the word document . It opened up to a hundred page story, which I was quite proud of. I scrolled down to where I had left of. Luckily I had an autosave feature on my story or the chapter I had wriiten would have been completely destroyed.
I looked at the last thing that had been written on the story, 'and lightning struck.' I scrolled down to the next page, ready to start the new chapter. 'A long way home,' I wrote.
Derrick felt himself come back to his body. All he noticed at first was the pain, mind boggaling pain. But as that began to pass over he felt a new sensation, softness. He almost smiled at the thought. How could anything be soft in this world? He sighed.
'Sometimes,' He thought, ' Just sometimes, I wish I could just sit and rest, just for a bit.'
He slowly opened his eyes, squinting as he got used to the light. To hsi surprise he found himself staring at a canopy of trees. All just swaying softly in the wind, like they didn't have a care in the world. He smiled at the beautifulness of this place. He reached out his hand and pretended to grasp the light shining through the canopy. He knew he would have to get up soon, but he could just lie there for a few more minutes.
'Stop it,' He thought, 'If you don't get up now you will never get up.'
He sighed and pushed himself of the ground. He had landed in a bunch of clovers.
'No wonder it was so soft.'
He made sure that all his weapons were still n his body. He picked up his bow and checked threw his pockets for his throughing knifes, and his boot for his secret dagger. Lastily he summoned the shadow blade, just to see if he still could. It appeared in his hand in a flash of dark smoke. The forbidden blade glowed a dark purple. He lifted it up.
'Such a beautiful blade, yet so deadly,' He thought, ' Why it chose me I'll never be certain, but it'll do for now, in case I really needed it."
He let go of the blade and it dissappeared into thin air. He then checked if his short sword was still on his back, it was, and he started trecking into the forrest, in the general direction of the Resistance. At least he hadn't lost is sense of direction.
"Derrick!" yelled a female voice, distracting me from my writing.
I looked up and smiled, "Mum!"
She came running up to me and gave me the biggest hug you could imagine. I hugged her back, it wasn't untill now that I realised how much I had missed her. I hugged back.
After what seemed like hours she finally let go and allowed me to breath.
"I've been so worried about you!" she said, "You probably don't remember much but you were hit by a lightning bolt and you were brought here to hospital and when you didn't wake up we feared the worst, but now your alright and everything's going to be back to normal."
'Not everything,' I though, thinking of Reflamed and the fact that my story was actually true, but I didn't voice that thought.
I smiled at my mum, realising that she had still been chatting on.
"Mum!" I said, "I'm ok, the doctor explained everything, and I do remember being struck by the lightning bolt, so I'm not totally in the dark."
She took a deep breath and looked at me. I smiled at her and she smiled back. She then pulled me into a hug.
My mum isn't usually this 'mushy'. She is usually a pretty head strong lady that is impossible to argue with. She was only shocked because of the lightning bolt strike. Anyone would be, talking about that, I wonder how my siblings are going. I picked up my computer and hopped out of bed.
"Let's go home mum," I said, taking her by the hand.
She grasped it tight, and we walked out of the hospital together.
