Chapter 23: First Flight
I slid of Reflamen's back the walked over to Rogan.
"Hey there," said Rogan, "You coming to the feast."
I hesitated, "Actually I was thinking of spending the night with Reflamen. He's big enough to carry me now, and he's been dying for us to fly together. You know how it goes."
"Alright," said Rogan, "But grab something to eat first."
"I will," I said.
"And make sure your back by nine tomorrow," said Rogan.
"You're starting to sound like my mum," I said smiling.
Rogan smiled back, "Just get going."
I nodded and ran over to Reflamen.
'Should I fly you over there,' said Reflamen.
"Not yet," I said, "I want our first flight to be special, I'll just grab something to eat then meet you at the dragon landing area."
Relfamen nodded his big head, opened his wings, then took of.
'Don't take to long.' he said, 'Or I will swoop down and pick you up while your eating.'
I smiled before running of over to the feast.
I arrived just before they started to eat. I grabbed a chicken leg, and some salad, then wolfed them down as quickly as I could.
"Wow, slow down there," said someone from behind me.
I turned around and saw Charole, eating a chicked leg.
"What's the hurry?" she said.
I swallowed the food in my mouth, "Me and Reflamen are going to spend the night flying. We haven't flown together before, so this'll be a first."
"Makes sense," said Charole, "Lilly was almost as pushy when we went on our first flight."
I smiled.
"Okay then," said Charole, "I'll leave you to it."
She walked off, back to the food table. I finished the rest of my food then started to make my way to the dragon landing area. Reflamen was waiting there, lying on his side. When he saw me he got up.
'Finally!' said Reflamen, 'What took so long.'
'I didn't take that long,' I replied.
Reflamen snorted. I laughed then climbed up his side, onto his back. I sat myself in the small crevasse behind his shoulders. I grabbed onto his horns.
"Let's go!" I called.
Reflamen roared and ran straight off the edge of the cliff. I connected my mind with Reflamen's, so I knew exactly what he was going to do and feel hsi movements. Reflamen pressed his wings close to his side and he dropped like a stone. As he came towards a small sloped from the cliff he reached out his legs and started to run down the cliff side.
The wind passed over my face and I yelled with joy. Reflamen roared with me and as the slope came up he opened his wings and pushed of the cliff face, twurling in the air before becoming steady.
My hair was covering my face. I wooped, and stuck my hands in the air.
'Now that was fun,' I said.
'You thought that was fast,' said Reflamen, 'You wait until you see my full speed.'
I smiled, 'Can't wait.'
Reflamen smiled and started to rise into the air. I looked down over his side and smiled. This may have been my third time on a dragon but for the first time I felt like I belonged here. I smiled and gripped Reflamen's horns.
"Let's do this," I said.
Reflamen looked back at me. He then looked forward and rose a few more metre's before dropping again. This time he had his wings open ever so slightly, but that only seemed to increase our speed. We narrowly missed the cliff face. Reflamen opened his wings and beat them, increasing our speed yet again, I was bearly hanging on. The wind seemed to be plasted to my face as we pluminted past the slope coming out of the cliff. Just before we hit the trees at the bottom, Reflamen twisted and straightened out, turning at an almost right angle. We brushed past the trees so fast they parted there leaves.
Reflamen opened his mouth and roared out a burst of yellow, orange flames. I cast a spell to gaurd me from the heat. When Relfamen finally started to slow down the mountain where the Resistance was camping was a dot in the distance.
I looked forward and saw the city of Taknor dead ahead.
'Hey do you want to have some fun?' said Reflamen.
I saw what he was planning.
'Aaah, I don't really think that's such a good idea,' I replied..
'And why not,' said Reflamen.
'You know very well why we shouldn't attack,' I said.
'Oh alright, but do you just want to fly over the city, you know, cause some caos, attract some guards,' said Relfamen, still winging his way to the city.
I was breaking.
'Come on, it'll be fun,' said Reflamen, 'We don't even need them to know we're on the Resistance'
'Oh fine,' I said, 'But no burning or killing, we might ruin the plot.'
'Alright fine,' said Relfamen, 'Know fighting or distruction, maybe a little bit of cat and mouse?'
'Sure, why not.'
Reflamen roared his delight and started to go faster. As we approached the city some of the guards saw us.
"Look out!" one of them cried, "A dragon!"
A man started to ring the bell and another started to run towards the castle. Relfamen smiled and started to fly circles around the city. Another ten minutes went by, but we still weren' getting attacked, besides the occasional arrow, which I blocked with my hand.
Suddenly a dragon rose from the open roof of the castle, followed by two others. As they got closer I recognized one of them as Leren, the second hand man of the king.
'This is going to get interesting,' said Reflamen.
As they drew closer Leren cast a spell, trapping us. I could of easily broken the spell but I decided to let it pass. I would break the spell as soon as Leren found out that we weren't 'with' the Resistance.
Leren was the lead dragon rider. His dragon's name was Grager, which was a grey, almost black dragon. The two other rider's were Dustan and the other I didn't recognize. Dustan was became one of the riser's who betray the king in the final battle. His dragon was a sea blue. Her name was Oceania.
"Hello there," said Leren, "Who are you? Are you with the Resistance?"
I shook my head, "My name's Gale, and I didn't even know there was a Resistance."
Leren frowned, "Then are you with the king?"
"Why would I be with that idiot!" I spat, laughing on the inside, "He destroyed my family!"
Leren raised his eyebrow, "Then how did you get your dragon?"
"I found his egg on the outscirts of my village , and he hatched," I said.
Reflamen snorted.
"Well then, you a now part of the kings army," said Leren, "You will learn to obey him and serve him to the death."
"That coward could never break me," I said.
"He won't have to," said Leren.
He launched a sudden attack on my mind, but pulled back almost as quickly, grimacing with pain. He looked back at me, surprise in his eyes.
'Can we escape now,' said Reflamen, 'This is getting boring.'
'Fine,' I said.
I started to imagine a white aura surrounding me and Relfamen. It started to happen. Leren's dragon faulted in its flight, surprised. Suddenly the aura shattered and Relfamen and me were free.
'Let's get out of here,' I said.
Relfamen spun around and started to speed up, very quickly. Leren cast another spell, attempting to trap us again. I imagnered an invisible force field behind us, blocking any more spells. Leren, Dustan and the other rider started to give chase. Reflamen doubled his speed so he was going almost two hundred kilometre's and hour. I was struggling to stay on, but I was managing.
We exited from the opposite side of the city, taking away all doubt that we were with the Resistance. I could imagine it now, Leren sending out patrols in this direction, thinking we had fled back to our village. Luckily I had chosen a direction that was far away from any villages or cities of any kind.
Relfamen started a sharp turn and we began to make our way around the city, making sure to keep out of sight, and back the way of the Resistance. As we flew I looked up at the stars.
'Beautiful night, isn't it,' I said.
'That it is,' said Relfamen.
I shivered, 'Phew, I'm getting cold up here.'
'Let's land for the night. We'll make it back to the Resistance tomorrow,' Suggested Reflamen.
'Your the boss,' I said.
Reflamen found a small clearing were he could land easily. When he did land I jumped of his back and onto the ground. I stumbled, it seemed like I was still in the air.
'Jelly legs,' said Relfamen.
He breathed fire onto the ground making it nice and warm for him to sleep on.
'Come on,' said Reflamen, he raised one of his wings, letting me climb underneath, 'Let's get some sleep.'
I nodded and yarned.
'Tomorrow we'll get back,' I said.
With that I climbed under his wing, it was almost like a tent. I leaned against his body and let my eyes close.
'Tomorrow's going to be a big day,' I thought.
