Nineteen Years Later...
King's Cross Station was full to the brim as Newt and ______ arrived. Newt looked around, it had been years since he's been to Platform 9 and ¾. The Hogwarts Express looked brand new, but it was the still the same old design. The loud engine was nothing compared to the sound of hundreds upon hundreds of students accompanied by their parents. In fact, that's what he was here with ______ for.
Newt looked behind him and saw his beautiful family with him: his darling wife, his twins (one boy and one girl, he was shocked) and their youngest daughter. It was the twin's first year at Hogwarts, and they were ecstatic. They wore their new robes and were messing around with their wands, although they used them more to swordfight with each other. ______ was holding onto their youngest daughter's hand, not wanting to lose her in the crowd.
Newt turned to the twins, trying to get their attention. "Arabella, Wilson," he called their names, and they put their wands at their sides and looked over at him. "Are you guys ready for your first year at Hogwarts?"
"Yeah!" Arabella shouted, pointing her wand at Newt. "I'm gonna be like you, dad. Now I'll be the one who takes care of your animals!"
Newt laughed. "Maybe I'll let you take care of them alone once you get a little older, sweetie. We'll see how well you do in Care of Magical Creatures. If you do well enough, we'll talk about it, okay?"
"Okay!" She gave him a hug. "I'm going to miss you, dad."
Newt hugged her back, not really wanting to let go. Arabella was the oldest by just a few minutes, but she always held it over Wilson's head. She had Newt's eyes and freckles, but ______'s hair. She smelled like home, and Newt was kind of worried to let them go to Hogwarts. He never realized how truly little the first years at Hogwarts were. He was worried about letting them go, but he knew that Hogwarts was safe. When Newt finally let go, he looked her in the eyes and smiled at her. "Don't forget to go say goodbye to your mom and your little sister, okay?" Newt kissed her forehead, and Arabella was already bounding towards ______ and Leigh, their youngest.
Newt looked at Wilson. Wilson, according to ______, looked like the spitting image of Newt. Same hair, same face, same freckles. However, his eyes looked exactly like ______'s beautiful eyes. He was taller than Arabella, and just a little taller than Newt was when he first started Hogwarts. He was being quieter than usual, and that was saying something. Usually, he was full of energy, but today he was quiet. Except for occasionally messing with Arabella, he was silent the entire trip. "Hey, is everything alright?" Newt kneeling, looking at Wilson.
"Yeah, everything's fine, but..." Wilson trailed off, at a loss for words.
"Are you nervous?"
"Kind of. I've never been away from you guys for so long, and... it's something else." His tone was quiet and serious.
"What's wrong?"
Wilson looked back at Arabella, Leigh and ______. Newt could tell there was a lot on his mind. However, when he finally spoke, Newt was surprised. "It's about Leigh," he started. "I don't want her to feel left out. Seeing all this... it's amazing, and I wish Leigh could experience it.
Newt knew exactly what he was talking about. Leigh was eight years old, and she had never exhibited any signs of magic. It wasn't just a matter of Leigh not being old enough to go to Hogwarts, she didn't have magic. Newt nodded. "I understand, but you know, it doesn't have to be that way."
"It doesn't?" Wilson asked, looking hopefully at Newt. "What do you mean?"
"Well, take your mom for example," Newt and Wilson looked over at her. Newt smiled, she was deep in conversation with Arabella about something. He was sure he'd hear about it later. "Does she look unhappy?"
Despite being tired, carrying an eight-year-old around, and dealing with the excitement of magical twins, ______ had a smile on her face wider than any one else's in the room. She had that look of wonder on her face as they stood at the station, the same one she had the first time Newt showed her magic. Newt smiled looking at her, she was a wonderful mother.
"No," Wilson said. "Mom almost always looks happy."
"Can she use magic?" Newt looked back at Wilson, knowing he knew what the correct response was.
"No, she can't."
Newt put his hands on Wilson's shoulders, looking at him with a serious expression, but also with kind eyes and a smile. "Your mother is the most wonderful person I know. She does so much, for you, Arabella, Leigh and I. She's lived with me for almost twenty years, and she can't use magic. She loves it because I let her share in the experience and the fun. She loves helping me take care of the creatures, and when I cast spells or make potions, she's always there, watching or helping. You and Arabella can do that with Leigh. Involve her. Show her spells, show her potions, let her take part. I promise you, Leigh can and will lead a happy life, with or without magic."
Wilson smiled and nodded. "Oh, and one last thing."
"What is it?"
"What if Arabella and I end up in different houses?"
Newt laughed. As much as Wilson cared about his sister, he knew that if they both ended up in different houses, the second the House Cup was introduced they'd become endlessly competitive. "There's no rule against you still hanging out with your sister, or even giving her space so you two can each make your own friends."
Wilson smiled and nodded, then gave a quick hug to Newt. "Thanks, dad. I'm going to miss you."
Newt patted his head and hugged him back. "I love you, Wilson."
While Newt and Wilson were having their heart to heart, Arabella and ______ were having their own conversation. "Alright, Arabella, you promise to write every week?" ______ asked. She was worried about Arabella and Wilson leaving, and Wilson had already promised to write. He even told them he had a plan: write every Sunday night, and send the letter off every Monday morning. However, Arabella was quieter when the conversation was going on.
"I will, I will," she told her. "It's just... um... it's just, it's..."
Arabella was like Newt as a child, according to him. Newt explained that when he was little, he had a horrible stutter, especially when he was nervous. From how Newt explained it, Arabella's stutter wasn't as bad as his, and ______ always knew she was having trouble or was nervous when it came out. Usually, she spoke confidently and was even sometimes a little sassy, but right now, there was something on her mind. "What is it, sweetie?" ______ put Leigh down, and Leigh stood by her side, but was looking around the huge station.
Arabella took a deep breath. "I'm going to miss you guys," she had a hint of a tear in her eyes. "I'm scared to go alone. What if I don't make any friends and no one likes me?"
______ pulled her into a hug. "Sweetie, you'll make tons of friends, okay?" she assured her. "Remember the Houses your dad told you about? They're going to sort you based on what's in your heart, and what you're like. You're going to be surrounded by hundreds of like-minded kids your age, just as scared as you are to be in a new place. You're going to make so many friends, and you're going to have so much fun."
Arabella let go of ______ and looked at her, smiling. "I'm going to miss you, mom."
"I know, but you'll be back for Christmas, okay?" ______ reassured her. "And we'll have the house all decked out, and you'll get to see me, and your dad, and Leigh, and you'll have so much to talk about."
______ stood back up and saw as Wilson and Newt walked towards her. Newt nodded at her, and she knew that it was time to give them the little gift they got them. "Before you guys get on the train, your dad and I have a surprise for you," ______ started, getting the attention of the two eleven-year-olds.
______ let go of Leigh's hand and told her to go to her dad, and Leigh ran right into Newt's arms. Newt picked her up and watched as ______ pulled something out of her bag: two small packages of wax stamp sealers with their initials carved into them: A.S. and W.S. They were in small, black bags along with ten galleons, the money they agreed to give them for any candy they'd get on the trolley.
Arabella and Wilson took the bags excitedly, Wilson a little happier about it than his sister. He was already looking forward to writing back to his parents and telling them everything: what house they got into, what his classes were like, everything. Arabella was more excited about the promise of sweets once they got onto the train.
The whistle blew, and soon, kids were swarming the train. "Well, you guys should get going if you want to get good seats," Newt assured them. Everyone gave Arabella and Wilson the last hugs, including Leigh. Soon, they got onto the train and into a compartment. Newt, ______ and Leigh waved from the platform, giving them a stream of 'goodbyes' and 'I love you' before watching the train take off.
Wizards were apparating out of the platform, and a few families had to walk back, including Newt's family. ______ was worried about Leigh being too little to apparate with them safely, and Newt agreed. He put Leigh down, and Newt and ______ each took one of her hands, walking with her as they headed back. After all that excitement and gift giving, he wanted to do something special today with Leigh. Newt broke the silence, turning to the two next to him. "How would you guys like to go to Honeydukes?"
______ smiled and Leigh started jumping up and down with joy. "Yes! Yes! Yes!" she repeated, her hair bouncing up and down. Newt laughed with her. Leigh inherited Newt's curly hair, and she had insisted on growing it super long, all the way down her back. She looked vastly different than Arabella and Wilson when it came to her eyes: she had a mutation in her eyes that caused one eye to look exactly like Newt's, and the other one exactly like ______'s. As strange as it was, it wasn't harmful, and Newt thought it was amazing.
______ wasn't worried about going to Hogsmeade like she used to be. The first time she went with Newt, she felt like an outsider, and that if anyone knew she was a Muggle, she'd get dragged out. Things changed once she and Newt got married. Things really were different in Britain than in the United States, and when she and Newt were together, no one even mentioned it. She wasn't worried about bringing Leigh, she deserved to be there just as much as her siblings.
---
Night came, and Leigh was fast asleep while ______ laid in bed in her silk robe, waiting for Newt to come to bed. He told her he was just going to do some final feedings and then be right back. She was exhausted by the day's activities.
A few minutes later, Newt walked in. It was still fairly warm in the house, and all Newt was wearing to bed was a pair of flannel pants. Newt smiled, seeing her look so comfortable on the bed. "You look amazing," he told her, sitting next to her on the bed.
"You tell me that every day," ______ smiled, looking over at him.
"It's true," he wrapped his arms around her, resting his head on her shoulder. "I love you so much, ______ Scamander."
She turned to Newt and gave him a prolonged kiss. "I love you, Newt. You've made my life complete."
They turned the lights off and got under the covers, cuddling each other for warmth. ______ fell asleep first as Newt thought about her. This is how things where meant to be.
They were inevitable.
