Chapter 6
Like always, Kaya woke up to a pain in her side but this time was different, the ghoul was going to stop this rude way of waking her up once and for all. When the next kick hit her ribs, the amber eyed girl grabbed captain Levi's leg and dragged him down onto the roof. The captain was astounded that the ghoul had just stood up to him, however, he was glad he didn't have to keep kicking her at sunrise.
"Fancy seeing you here captain." Kaya teased, laying down next to the captain.
"Ha ha, very funny." He said sarcastically while sitting up and brushing the dust and dirt from the roof, off of him. "Courts today, you'll be sat next to the brats we saved yesterday."
"That's gonna be fun, how much do you wanna bet that I'm gonna have to restrain one of them."The ghoul joked.
"You don't have any money." The captain stated.
"I'm a thief remember, money isn't a problem." Kaya said while holding her hands up in defence.
"Just hurry up, and try not to steal anything." Levi suggested.
The ghoul stretched and she heard most of her bones crack, sleeping on the roof for two months wasn't great for her joints, however, she was a ghoul and she would get over it. The fox made her way through her window and put on her scouting uniform before heading to the dining hall to meet her squad. Once she entered the room, she could smell the sickly aroma of human food and decided that she didn't need to drink tea because of her recent meal.
"Newbie, do you want some?" Oluo asked.
"Nah, I ate yesterday." Kaya replied, she knew that the others would question her. But the best lies hold at least some of the truth, as a criminal in the underground, she knew how to lie.
"Really when, we were together the whole time." Petra said which sparked the captains interest. Her excuse had just been contradicted and she needed to think fast and calmly of her next move.
"In my room. I do eat, I just don't like doing it in front of people." Kaya lied. Unfortunately, the ghoul suspected the captain seen through her lies and would have to avoid making eye contact with him for now.
"You don't have to be shy around us, we're your squad." Petra replied.
"It's not exactly about being shy." She countered, which ended the topic. However, Kaya could still feel the captains gaze lingering on her and refused to meet it. "What times the meeting?" The ghoul asked him. "Am I the only one here going?"
"The meetings at noon, so it's a while away. The rest of the squad don't have clearance because they didn't witness the brat emerge out of that thing." Her captain replied while sipping his tea.
"Good, do I have permission to go on a walk?" She questioned.
"Where to?" Oluo asked.
"Dunno, just gonna stretch my legs a bit." The ghoul responded. In truth, she wanted to practice her kagune techniques, she hadn't used it in a while and had a bad feeling about the Yeager kid.
"Are you gonna sneak out if I say no?" The captain asked with a raised brow.
"Most likely." She smirked as the captain nodded his head. Within no time, she ran outside and went deep into the forest just outside the castle grounds. Once she was certain that no one was near her, she activated her ghoul eyes and a red glow shimmered in the sun rays. Next she decided to activate her kagune. She had three spikes sitting on her back and that were a dark colour, blood orange made itself visible though the darkness. The spikes at the tip of her kagune were bright orange and she had white veins littered throughout the rest of her ghoulish power.
Kaya stretched her kagune towards a tree and used it to propel herself to the top, then she sat on a branch and observed the sunrise. It was one of the few things she enjoyed about the scouts sleep schedule, she got to watch the sun rise every morning, and if she was luckily, she could watch it set. The fox breathed in the refreshing smell of nature, until she caught a whiff of a human. The ghouls eyes widened and she jumped down from the tree, landing on her kagune. She quickly changed her eyes and got rid of her physical ghoulish form.
"Kaya is that you?" Asked a familiar voice, it was Eld, second in command of the squad. The fox quickly fixed her hair, trying to make it look as though she hadn't just jumped out of a big ass tree.
"Yeah, what's up." The ghoul shouted her reply.
"Captain wants you back for a debriefing, he said you both need to get there early." Eld shouts.
"Fine I'm on my way." The ghoul said as she jogged towards Eld's voice. He was on his ODM gear and had offered to carry Kaya, however the ghoul would much prefer to run back, if he left then she could use her kagune to get there quicker. As soon as he was out of sight, the amber eyed girl activated her kagune and used it to swing from tree to tree, it's sharp edges digging deep into the bark. She made it back in no time and Eld was amazed by her speed, she may have been too obvious.
The ghoul walked along the halls to Levi's office and knocked on the door before she entered, not waiting for a response. "You wanted to see me, captain?" She enquired.
"You need to learn some respect cadet, you need to be invited in." He said before demanding her to retry her entry.
"Jeez who put a stick up your ass." She retorted, without even bothering to deal with his unnecessary order.
"Says the brat who woke up and decided that she was going to lie to her whole squad." He said with a raised brow, the ghoul let a light chuckle. "When was the last time you actually ate?"
"Oh, I get it now. You're worried about me, so you do have a heart." She joked but soon saw that the captain wanted a serious answer. "Truth is, I can't eat." She admitted.
"Why not?" He asked curiously.
"Every time I eat I always vomit, I don't like vomiting every time I have a meal." She defended. Kaya was telling the truth, or at least part of it. She wanted to keep the fact that she needed to eat human flesh hidden, for obvious reasons, and she didn't want anyone knowing about her immunity to human weapons because that would cause fear.
"Why don't we test that theory?" The captain said, it was more of a command than an actual question.
"Do I have a choice?"
"No. Here's a bucket and here's a piece of bread. Go ahead." He spoke. The ghoul didn't really want to do this because it would weaken her and it would put the meal she had yesterday to waste. However, she had to prove to Levi that she wasn't lying.
She took a bite of the bread and started to chew, the taste was disgusting but she had to cope with it until she vomited. The ghoul took a few more bites of bread until she heard her stomach growl in disapproval. She was about to make a rude remark to her captain for making her do this but before she could, the bread made its way back through her digestive system and landed in the bucket. The process repeated until her body couldn't find any traces of bread.
"That's why I don't eat." She said through her deep shaky breaths.
"How's that even possible, how do you get you're energy?" The captain said in disbelief.
"I drink tea with all the nutrients I need, my family made it before they disappeared." She said while whipping her mouth and putting the bucket to the side. "Also, if you tell anyone about this I'm going to have to throw you off the roof." She threatened.
"Are you sure you don't want me talking to Hange about this, I know how much you love their methods." The captain teased.
"By the walls, if you did that then I might reconsider jumping in that grave I've been working on since I met that four eyed geek." She recalled her first time meeting Hange and how bad they smelled, looking back at it, she can smile at the experience.
"Anyways, we're leaving now I'll explain what's going to happen on the way." The captain said while taking the bucket from Kaya and putting it near the well outside.
Kaya jumped on her horse and waited for Levi to guide her there. The ghoul was dreading going into a room full of military police, not only were they annoying in general, but they also could recognise her. Kaya had caused a lot of trouble for the MP's when she was the fox of the underground and had stolen most of their resources, it would be a bother if they knew who she was.
"Yo, what's gonna happen if the MP's recognise me? I may have caused a tiny bit of trouble for them in the past." The amber eyed girl questioned.
"We're going to use that to our advantage." The captain said, causing Kaya to let out a confused hum. "Erwin said if we can convince them that we reformed one of the most wanted criminals of the underground, then a titan soldier should be a piece of cake." He added.
"Hey! You didn't reform me, I was always this awesome." She defended.
"Yeah right, your only form of entertainment was taunting military police." Levi joked. The ghoul was going to argue but she knew it was true, they were so easy to provoke.
"You've got to admit that it's hilarious. There egos are too big anyways, I was helping them." Kaya knew that most scouts thought that the military police were snobs, rich people who would rather cower behind the interior than fight for humanity.
"I don't think you were being too helpful."
"Yeah, I'm sure going to court and beating up a kids gonna be helpful too. Right?" The amber eyed girl said with a raised brow, she truly couldn't wait to see what was going to happen, the looks on everyone's faces were going to be priceless.
"Once you see this guy, you'll want to beat him up too." Levi defended. "He has a very kickable face." The ghoul laughed at Levi's final comment and before she knew it, they were at the court house.
"See ya later captain." The fox said as she waved.
Kaya found her seat next to the boy she had seen at Trost, he had shoulder length blonde hair and ocean blue eyes. The fox had never seen the ocean, but illegal books provided her with enough information to know the basics.
"Hey your the kids friends right?" She asked, already knowing the answer. Kaya stuck out her hand awaiting the boy to shake it. "I'm Kaya, a scout from Levi squad." She introduced.
The boy took her hand and shook it lightly. "Armin Arlert. Now that you mention it, I remember you. You were the one who saved us when we were getting Eren out." He said with realisation.
"Yup, that's me." She said.
She was about to go back to asking the boy more questions until the girl next to him came into eyesight. She had short black hair and dark eyes, she looked a different race to most of the people the ghoul had seen. But the more she looked at the girl, the more she thought of captain Levi.
"Do you know what's happening to Eren?" The girl pleaded with wide eyes. She was desperate for an answer that suggested Eren would be ok.
"I have a brief idea, yes." The girl stared at the ghoul and beckoned her to continue. "I can't get into the details, but the scouts have a solid plan. Don't worry, Erwins smart and Levi is short but scary." She joked.
"Tell me the plan." The black haired girl demanded.
"Did you just ignore what I said?" The ghoul deadpanned, this girl was seriously annoying her. Furthermore, she could compromise the scouts' plan, the ghoul would definitely end up restraining her and sent Levi an angry glare.
"I'm sorry about her, we're just a bit concerned about Eren, he's like family to us." Armin said, trying to guilt trip Kaya. The ghoul was a thief in the underground, she knew what manipulation was and she wasn't a fan.
"I don't appreciate you trying to guilt trip me, Armin." She said bluntly. "I did save you, and Eren for that matter."
This caused both of the teenagers next to her to stay quiet, however she could feel the anger start to pour out of the black haired girl. The amber eyed ghoul ignored the daggers that were being glared into her and saw the doors open, the show was about to begin, she smirked.
Eren was brought in by Hange and Mike, the ghoul almost felt sorry for him and the fact he had to be escorted by two of the strangest scouts she had met. Mike was kind and strong, but he had a weird habit of sniffing people when they first meet, when he did this to Kaya, Levi had to restrain her from punching him. As for Hange, they were the definition of strange, Kaya couldn't think of a single quality they had that would be considered normal.
Two military police officers roughy dragged Eren to a metal pole and secured him, making sure he won't escape and go all titan. The ghoul thought they were over exaggerating and didn't have to be so harsh about it, then again, if they found out she was a ghoul, the treatment would be way worse. Kaya observed the others in the courtroom, she saw a few of the church members and sighed thinking about the fact they had any authority over Eren's fate.
Kaya was snapped out of her thoughts when the crowd all rose. Premier Zackery had just entered the court room and it was obvious he would be the judge of this matter. The man rolled up his sleeves and got ready to start the case.
"All right, shall we begin?" Zackery spoke, Eren looked terrified, he wasn't prepared for this at all. "Your name is Eren Yeager and as a soldier you have sworn to give up your life when called to, for the good of the people. Is that correct?" He asked omnisciently.
"Yes." Said Eren, still sweating with nerves.
"As an enlisted soldier during a time of war, military doctor demands your tribunal be held as a court marshal. As commander of our armed forces, this matter is my discretion. Thus I will decide, whether you live or you die." He summed up to Eren who he could tell still had questions. The two sitting next to Kaya began to panic and their eyes widened. "Any objections?" The premier asked.
"No sir." Eren said with a shaky voice.
"Your compliance is appreciated. Let us proceed, as expected, covering up your existence has proved quite fruitless. Either we publicly disclose your existence one way or another, or we risk the outbreak of widespread civil unrest. A choice must be made and the regiment that takes custody of you will determine your fate. The military police, or the scout regiment. To begin, the military police will now present their case." The premier concluded.
Kaya sighed at the thought of the military police winning the case, she really didn't like how egotistic they were. To top that off, they were ultimately just annoying.
"Thank you, my name is Nile Dok, I am commander of the military police." He introduced.
"So he's the leader of those idiots." Kaya muttered, making sure that very few people heard her comment. Armin turned towards her in disbelief of how she was treating the higher ups.
"Our recommendation, following a furrow examination of his physiology, once checked, Eren Yeager must be disposed of immediately. We acknowledge that Yeagers ability played a part in reclaiming Trost, however, as has been stated, his mere existence is creating a swell of rebellious sentiment. For the greater good, after we have gathered all the information that we can from him, we would see him as a fallen warrior of humanity." The commander said, he was about to continue until he was interrupted by a member of the church.
"Unacceptable-" Kaya had always hated the members of the church, they always acted so self righteous, so when they tried to speak up, she always ignored. Instead, the ghoul thought about what Levi had said to her, they were going to use her as an example of how the scouts are capable of reforming people. The fox wondered if she needed to speak or act in a certain way to make their point more believable.
"And now I'd like to hear the scout regiments proposal." Zackery said while turning towards Erwin.
"Yes sir, as commander of the survey core, I, Erwin Smith propose the following. Let Eren join our ranks, reinstate him as a full member of the scouts and we will use his Titan ability to retake wall Maria. That is all." Erwin stated.
The whole room started muttering amongst themselves until the premiere spoke again. "Is that it?"
"Yes with his ability, I'm certain we can reclaim wall Maria. Therefore I believe our top priority is perfectly clear." The commander reassured.
"Quite bold, assuming you were given clearance for this. Where do you plan to launch this operation from? Commander Pyxis, the wall of Trost district has been completely sealed, is that correct?" Zackery questioned.
"Yes, I doubt it's gate will ever open again." An older commander replied.
"We'll depart from colonists district to the east, from there we'll make to Shiganshina. A new route can be established as we preceded." Erwin responded. Kaya knew from experience that creating new routes in titan territory was dangerous, not to mention that she'd be travelling with a boy who could turn into a titan.
"But that's ridiculous, our time and money would be better spent sealing up all the gates, there the only parts of the wall that the colossal titan can break right. Let's reinforce the blasted things and wash our hands of the entire affair." A member of the stands shouted.
"Shut your mouth you fat merchant dog, with a titan on our side we can finally return to wall Maria."
"We can't afford anymore of your childish antics or delusions." The two continued to bicker until humanities strongest interrupted them.
"Squealing louder won't help your case, pig. While we're bolstering our defences, do you think the titans are going to idly stand by. And when you say 'we' do you speak for anyone other than you and your fat merchant friends? Do you pigs even realise that most of our people are struggling to survive of what little land we have left." Kaya smirked at the captains words and hoped that the idiot he was addressing would shut it.
"I'm simply saying that sealing the gates is the only guaranteed solution we've got." Unfortunately, the argument continued and Kaya began to zone out, she didn't have time to listen to people bickering, as amusing as it was, their ignorance was starting to bore her.
"It's the cults fault, their the ones that delayed the garrisons arming of the walls." The boy beside the ghoul stated.
"Shows you the amount of support and power they've got." Added a silver haired woman.
"Kill me now. I hate the church members." The ghoul groaned. "Five years ago they were little to nothing, but now they've got way too much influence." Kaya said, adding to the reasons not to trust the cult.
The premier was also growing impatient by their bickering and started to tap his hand on the desk. "Order! I ask that you save your personal sentiments for a more appropriate venue. Now then mr Yeager, I have a question for you. As a soldier you've made a solum pledge to answer humanities call, can you still serve by controlling your ability?" He interrogated.
"Yes, I will sir." The titan shifter quickly responded.
"Oh is that so, but this report from the battle of Trost contradicts that statement. Just after transforming, it seems you made an attempt to crush Mikasa Ackerman." The premier said. Kaya turned her head towards to girl next to her and a few thoughts popped into her head.
'Ackerman, as in Kenny?' The ghoul thought to herself.
"And who is this Mikasa Ackerman?" Zackery said while scanning the room.
"Me. That would be me sir." The raven haired girl responded.
"All right then, is it true that Yeager assaulted you while he was in titan form?"
"Yes, all of that's true." Mikasa said with sadness laced in her voice. Eren looked in her direction with disbelief, which the ghoul took note of. She didn't expect him not to remember his actions as a titan.
"However, he also saved me twice before, and each circumstance, he was using his titan ability. The first, shortly after Trost fell, I was nearly killed by a titan, but then Eren came. He stepped in and protected me. The second, he transformed to shield Armin and me from canon fire. I implore you to take these facts into consideration." The girl said with desperation of saving Eren.
"Objection. I believe personal feelings play a large part in her testimony. Let the record show that Mikasa Ackerman was orphaned at a young age and was subsequently taken in by the Yeager family. What's more, our own internal investigation let to a most shocking discovery. Eren Yeager and Mikasa Ackerman, at the tender age of 9, dealt with 3 adult kidnappers by stabbing them to death. Granted this was done in self defence, but all the same, one cannot help but question the violent nature of the act. Knowing all of this, should we really invest in him?"
The military police commander's words were hard to hear, however, it did give a good opportunity for Kaya to play her part. The whole crowd burst into conversation at the shocking facts and started throwing accusation after accusation.
"Maybe she's a titan too, direct her just to be safe." One of the merchants said.
Kaya looked at Eren and couldn't help but feel sorry for him, he saved Mikasa, yet he was being treated like a villain. The boy in the centre of the room started to stir. "Now hold on a second, maybe I'm a monster that you want dead, but you leave her out of this. She's innocent." Eren pleaded. However, the crowd ignored him.
"STOP IT." He shouted, his chains rattling at the sudden movement. "Your wrong, about it all. But your so intent on pushing selfish agendas, you're blind to what's in front of you. What does it even matter. None of you have even seen a titan, so why are you so afraid huh? There's no sense in having power if you're not going to use it to fight. If you're to scared to fight, then fine, let me do it for you. You, you're all cowards. Just shut up, and put all you're faith in me." The titan shifter screamed causing the whole room to go silent and the clicking sound of a gun became more apparent.
"Does he do that a lot?" Kaya whispered to the blonde boy next to her. He nodded his head and the ghoul sighed, she couldn't stand people who tried to push their views on others.
"Take aim dammit." Nile Dok demanded.
Kaya was about to make a stand, until she saw Levi walking towards the boy. The fox smiled, knowing what was about to happen. Levi made his way to the centre and quickly sent a kick towards Erens face, knocking out a tooth in the process. He continued to attack the titan shifter, every punch causing the people in the stands to flinch. Mikasa was trying to help Eren but Armin managed to keep a grip on her jacket. The ghoul saw his struggles and dragged the raven haired girl back into her seat.
"You know personally, I think nothing instills discipline like pain. You don't need a good talking to, what you in need of is to be taught a lesson. And you just happen to be in a perfect kicking position." The captain said while stomping on Erens head.
"N-now hold on Levi. It's dangerous, what if he gets angry, turns into a titan?" Nile said in fear.
Humanities strongest payed no notice to the commander and kept kicking the boy in front of him. "Don't be silly. After all, you guys just want to dissect him don't ya." He said while lifting his head up by his hair. "During the time that he was transformed, they say that Yeager was able to kill 20 titans before he ran out of strength. As an enemy, his intelligence makes him all the more dangerous. But I could still take him down without a problem. How many of you can say the same? Before you torment the beast, you better think, can you actually kill him." The captain stated.
Erwin swiftly raised his hand. "Sir, I have a proposition. There's still so much we don't know, and there's no doubt his danger will be ever present. As such I suggest this. Eren Yeager be placed under captain Levi's supervision and we'll conduct a recon mission outside the walls." He proposed.
"Yeager will join you on this mission?" Zackery asked.
"Yes sir, you can look upon the results of the mission yourself. If he successfully controls his ability, Eren will have proven his value to mankind." Erwin added.
"Eren Yeager will be strictly supervised? And if he were to lose control?" Zackery beckoned.
"I can kill him if it comes to it, the problem is there's no middle ground." Levi responded.
"What do you plan on doing about his violent nature? For all we know you could be his next victims." A merchant said.
Commander Erwin made eye contact with the ghoul who nodded in response. "Our regiment has a small history in reforming people with so called violent natures. Have you ever heard of 'the fox of the underground'?" The commander asked, which caused the crowd to mutter amongst themselves, especially the military police. "A few months ago, we caught her and since then she has helped us reclaim more land and saved many lives. She has been with us 2 months and already has a higher amount of titan kills than most of the scouts." Erwin said.
"Is the fox with us now?" Asked the premier. Erwin nodded his head and Kaya rose from her seat.
"Yes sir." She saluted.
"Is all this true, what caused this sudden change?" He enquired.
"At first they were my capturers, but on my first expedition, I saved some of my squad mates and we became very close friends. After changing a criminal like me, I don't think Yeager would be a problem." The ghoul stated.
"Very well, then I've made my decision. Eren Yeager will join the scouting regiment, starting immediately." Premier Zackery said while tapping his hand against the table as a sign of certainty. Kaya sat down, glad that she made a contribution to the scouts security of the Yeager boy. A few people around her were shocked by her statement and the fact she was the most wanted criminal of the underground.
"You're the fox of the underground?" Asked Armin with a shaky voice.
"I'm retired, nothing more than a hard working scout." The ghoul smirked at the fear she caused.
"Thank you for helping save Eren." Mikasa muttered, still holding a grudge for what the ghoul had said earlier.
"I'm just following orders. You should thank the commander." The ghoul said while making her way towards the captain. Once the scouts were united, they freed Eren from his restraints and made their way to a nearby room for his wounds to be treated.
"We'll that went better than I expected. Does it hurt?" Hange asked, treating his wounds in the process.
"Yeah" Eren replied.
"Yeah! Describe it to me." The scientist demanded with madness in their eyes.
"Sorry for all that, but the theatrics did get you placed in our custody." Erwin apologised on behalf of Levi.
"Wow, you seriously got Erwin to apologise for you. That's low." The ghoul teased.
"It's not like I want him to." Levi defended, trying to keep his reputation in check.
"I can assure you the pain was worth it. We played our trump cards at the perfect times. You have my upmost respect." Erwin said with his hand stuck out towards Eren. "I'm glad you're on our team."
"Me too, glad to be here sir." The boy stuttered. His expression quickly changed when Levi sat beside him.
"So Eren. You don't resent me now do you?" The captain asked.
"No, I can see what you did was necessary, sir." The shifter answered.
"Good then you understand." Levi finished.
"Still, don't you think you went too far? I mean you knocked his tooth out." Hange said while revealing the tooth.
"No, he's right. Eren has a really kickable face." Kaya observed his facial features and poked towards his bruised cheek.
"You picked that thing up, how disgusting." Levi said towards the scientist.
"This is a precious sample I'll have you know." Hange defended.
"Really, it looks more like some scrawny kids tooth." Kaya stated.
"Hey Eren. Let me take a look inside that mouth of yours." The goggled maniac demanded. The shifter looked towards the two special operations members, who both stood their, not willing to give him sympathy.
Reluctantly, the boy opened his mouth and Hange looked inside. However their face soon changed. "Your tooth, it grew back." They said in disbelief.
'Is he like me?' Kaya thought to herself.
