Chapter 5
Two month time skip
Kaya had been a scout for two months. In that time, she had become close friends with Petra and had gained the highest kill count of her squad, excluding captain Levi, but the ghoul liked to think he had a head start. Every night, the girl had slept under the stars and it had became routine for captain Levi to wake her on a morning. However, she was currently facing a slight problem. The ghoul was growing hungrier, and her squad had been questioning her 'eating habits'. They had no idea how she had survived that long without any food or water, other than tea. To top that off, she had to conserve as much tea and would have to grab a quick meal on her next expedition, she usually split from the squad after failed missions and fed on her dead comrades remains. Yeah. It sounds gross but what else was she supposed to do, she had to save her tea for when she was inside the walls.
The scouts were currently on an expedition outside of the walls, capturing more titans, the mad scientist couldn't get enough. Kaya was slightly concerned but didn't question them, she knew that Hange was smart and their research would be beneficial. Luckily, the scouts didn't need to confront any titans, instead, they decided to lure a few into a forest near their base and capture them using Hange's invention. It was a spiked net that the titans couldn't escape without being cut, so they were pretty safe. In full honesty, most of their missions had been successful due to Hange's calmer attitude and Erwins orders to obey the section commander.
As they made their way back to the walls with new titans, Sawney and Bean, they saw a devastating sight. Smoke signals were going off from inside the walls and canon fire could be heard from miles away. Not to mention the Titan steam that was rising from within Trost. Kaya began to panic.
"Scouts, Trost has been breached, we must defend the cadets and do what we do best. Move out." Erwin ordered and the pace of the horses began to quicken.
"Special operations squad, go ahead and try to save as many people as possible." Erwin instructed, receiving a nod from the captain.
Just as ordered, the squad went ahead and soon made it towards the walls. "Switch to ODM gear and climb the wall, the titans are still getting through the breach." Levi demanded.
Kaya complied and shot her hooks as far up the wall as she could, then running up the side, using the wires to pull her faster. Kaya knew that she needed to conserve gas, now more than ever. The ghoul quickly made it to the top of the wall and waited for the rest of her squad.
"What's next captain." She asked.
"We help as many people as possible, we'll split into teams. Petra and Oluo. Eld and Gunther. Kaya you're with me. Let's go." He said while jumping from the wall, the ghoul followed and the two took out as many titans as they could while on their journey to find soldiers.
"This is worst case scenario, right?" The ghoul asked her superior.
"Looks like it." The captain replied bluntly.
The ghoul continued their silence and sliced a few more napes of the enemy. But out of the corner of her eye she saw a brown jacket. "Captain over here." She said while speeding towards the soldier.
"Captain Levi's gonna make you pay for this." The soldier choked out while being crushed by the titans jaw. Kaya quickly sliced the skin of the titans jaw and swooped the garrison member from its grasp, while Levi delivered the final slice to its nape. The ghoul tried not to react to the sweet smell of blood that now coated her hands and not let her eyes take over.
"Captain Levi." The soldier spoke.
Levi knelt down next to the soldier. "I'm here." He soothed.
"Did this, make a difference? Was I helpful? Please sir, don't tell me this was for nothing. Tell me this will be a good cause." He stuttered while lifting his bloodied hand towards Levi.
The raven haired man took the soldiers hand and held it tight. "We've made good strides today soldier, and tomorrow because of you. Your strength won't die with you, the torch will be carried on, by me. This I swear on my very life, the titans will be eradicated." The captain said with deep emotion. Kaya had learned that the captain tried his hardest to keep a stoic face in these situations, however, his voice always betrayed him and showed his true colours.
"He's gone." The ghoul muttered to the captain.
"Did he hear what I had to say, any of it?" Levi said while looking at the now corpse.
"By the looks of it, yes. He looks at peace with his death." Kaya said, trying to act as though she wasn't hungry at the sight of the soldier. She was keeping the drool hidden in her mouth but was interrupted from her trance when she heard the commanders voice.
"Levi, we're pulling out." Erwin stated.
"Seriously?" The ghoul spat with an irritated tone.
"What do you mean, you know damn well that we can push further. My men didn't die for nothing." The shorter male argued.
"There's a swarm of titans heading north, they're bearing down on the city. It's just like 5 years ago, something tells me this is gonna be bad, for all we know the walls already been reduced to rubble." Erwin said.
The two comrades gasped and looked at one another. Kaya wasn't present when wall Maria fell, but if it was anything like this, then they were screwed. They both called their horses and waited for the arrival. The smell of blood almost made Kaya insane, she had gone a while without a meal and as soon as she got away from the captain she was going to cure her hunger.
Shortly later, the horses arrived and they both headed north, to where the titans were storming. They both rode in silence until the ghoul finally decided to say something. "It was nice of you to talk to that soldier, I wouldn't have known what to say." She complimented.
"Tch, I told him what he needed to hear." The captain replied.
The ghoul wanted to continue the conversation but there was nothing to be said. What were you supposed to talk about while everyone around you is dying? There was no bright side to this. Instead, the two rode in silence until they met with the rest of their squad.
They continued to defend the walls and the civilians who were retreating into them. Kaya was killing titans left, right and centre. She was on a role, mainly due to the fact that the titans showed no interest in her, making her practically invisible to their radar. She wondered if anyone would notice the titans behaviour around her, if anyone, it would be Hange. That was not a conversation that the ghoul wanted to have.
"Levi, I've just received word from commander Pyxis. Apparently we have a Titan fighting for us, they are planning to seal the breach with this Titan power and they need backup." Erwin instructed.
"We're on it." Levi said before flying away. The rest of his squad were close behind him and to their surprise, they saw a titan, lifting a Boulder and walking towards the hole.
"Holy shit. Is this real?" The fox said in disbelief.
"Defend that thing at all costs." Levi ordered. They took down any titan that left the swarm near the corner of Trost and were successfully defending the green eyed titan. However, they were interrupted by a loud roar and a gust of wind that followed. The titan had pushed the boulder into the wall and the breach was sealed. Unfortunately, their distraction was taken advantage of by the titans who ran towards the boy who was emerging from the titan corpse. Both Levi and Kaya leaped into action.
Kaya attached her hooks to the wall in front of the Titan and sliced him on her way towards the wall. Where as Levi spun around and cut the nape in a circular motion. The two then landed onto the titans that they had killed and observed the situation.
"Pay attention kiddos. This is the part where you tell me what exactly I'm looking at." Levi said while the cadets stood in amazement.
"You can thank us later." The ghoul teased as she looked at the titan boy. His expression showed his admiration for the scouts who had just saved him and his friend's panicked faces soon relaxed.
"Kaya." The captain spoke. "Help the cadets with clean up before a pandemic breaks lose." He demanded.
'This guy just ruined my cool moment' Kaya thought to herself.
"Fine whatever." She said and she walked away to find her meal.
While on her travels, she saw a boy with ash blonde hair stood over half a corpse. "No marco." He said while shaking. "How did this even happen."
The ghoul made her way over to the cadet and instantly sympathised his loss. The nurse was being persistent and kept asking for the corpses name, but the boy was too in shock to form a response. Kaya put her hand on the boys shoulder.
"Hey, do you know him." She soothed.
"Y-yeah." He stuttered, trying to hold back tears.
"It's ok to cry, lots of lives were lost today. The most we can do is let their spirit reside within us." The ghoul comforted. She had listen to the captains speech to the soldier that they had tried to help and was now taking his words to heart.
"I didn't even see him go, he died alone." The boy said.
"I like to tell myself that no one is ever truly dead, it helps take away some of the guilt." The fox said, recalling her experience as a scout. "But right now, we all need to do our part as soldiers. Please, what's his name?" Kaya asked.
"Marco, Marco Bodt." The ash blonde said. The nurse nodded and wrote down the name. "You're a scout right? So you know how it feels." The boy asked.
"I've seen my fair share of comrades die, but I don't think I was ever as close with them as you and Marco were." She answered before turning to leave. They may have won the battle of Trost, but at what cost? How many lives were lost? The ghoul wondered and looked to find her meal. She made it to an isolated place and followed the sweet smell that she was forced to love. Once in position, she ate her mean and activated her ghoul eyes, which had also been hidden for a while.
After she had cured her hunger, she found Petra and the two began to talk and try to comfort each other from the devastation of the titans. Petra and Kaya didn't speak for long, they both felt uneasy after their experience and loss of comrades, so they both went to sleep early. The ghoul stuck to her routine and climbed onto the roof to likely cry herself the sleep. However when she made it to her usual spot, she was met with Levi. The fox ignored his strange behaviour and lay down next to him.
The ghoul resisted the urge to talk to him and gave him the peaceful silence he had hoped for. After a while, the captain broke the silence. "Today wasn't how I expected our expedition to go." He said.
"I thought our luck was turning around." The ghoul replied. "Did you speak with boy wonder?" She then asked.
"He wants to be a scout. If we win the judge's approval then he'll be joining our squad."
"I almost feel bad for him, knowing four eyes won't leave him alone." The ghoul joked.
"Wait till you see our plan for court." Levi chuckled.
"You can't just leave it at that. Tell me more." Kaya whined and was intrigued by what he had to say.
"Erwins plan is to beat the living shit out of him in front of everyone." Levi said with a straight face.
"Wow I never pegged you for the guy who enjoyed child abuse." She said before bursting out laughing. "Seriously, how can you say that with a straight face?" She choked out between laughs.
The two talked for what felt like hours and the ghoul started to enjoy the captains company. They drifted from conversations about dream jobs, relationships, life in the underground. The atmosphere was joyful until Levi asked a question about her diet.
"On a more serious note, why haven't you been eating?" He asked.
"I'm just not hungry, when I do eat, I don't eat much anyways." She tried to lie.
"But none of the squad have seen you eat since you arrived here. How are you so strong and skilled if you hardly eat?" He interrogated.
"I do eat, just not around people." The girl said while shifting her gaze back to the stars.
The captain didn't want to pry so he switched the subject. "You're wanted in court when the brat wakes up. Since your a witness and all."
"Great, my favourite thing to do is listen to old privileged men judge the scouts." The sarcastically responded.
"Look on the bright side, you get to see me beat up a 15 year old." The captain chuckled.
"Now that's something I wanna see." Their conversation continued until they both fell asleep. The ghoul was the first in the squad to break through the captains tough exterior and she was proud of herself for it, she slept peacefully.
