Thud. Kaya groaned at a pain towards her legs. Then it happened again. Thud. The ghoul was now starting to get irritated, so she quickly sat up. It was still pitch black on the roof so she didn't understand why someone was once again kicking her. Shifting her gaze to the side, she was met with captain Levi who had his arms cross, waiting for her to get up.

"Figured you'd be up here." He said. "Get up and get ready, we don't want you jeopardising the expedition." Added the captain while turning to walk away.

"Hey." The ghoul called after him, causing him to turn around. "Who taught you to use ODM gear?" She enquiried.

"Huh?"

"Don't act dumb, I saw your technique when you were chasing me." She continued to question him. "So who taught you."

The captain then smirked. "That's classified." He mocked and then left through his own window.

The fox couldn't believe what she had just saw. The cold emotionless captain levi had just smirked at her, not only that, but he actually said something other than clicking his tongue. She quickly let her shock disappear and went to get ready for her day.

Shortly after, she went to meet her squad in the main hall, they were eating breakfast so Kaya tried to sit down unnoticed. For once, she was finally successful, and the team had understood not to question her. While they were all eating their food and Kaya was sat sipping her tea, a loud scream came from outside. Kaya flinched at the sudden sound and turned her head to see what looked to be a mad scientist at the door. They had bright brown eyes that were covered by goggles, and hair that looked as though it hadn't seen a shower in months. Kaya put her hand up to her nose, in hopes of avoiding the stench coming from the scientist. Due to her advanced sense of smell, she was not enjoying their presence.

"Section commander Hange, what are you doing here so early." Petra asked.

"I came to ask for your help." They squealed. "How would you like to help me capture a titan?" They said while walking over to Levi's side.

Everyone was silent, not wanting to go on a suicide mission. However, the ghoul was intrigued and let loose her signature smirk. "I'll do it." She spoke up, causing the goggled maniac to make their way over to her. "But on one condition, you really need to take a shower, I'm trying my best not to dig myself a grave just to try and limit your stench." She said while sipping her tea. This caused most of the squad to hold back a laugh, thinking that she was joking.

The scientist just laughed it off and then threw her arm around the ghoul. "Ah, are you the newbie. That would explain a lot. Hey how much do you know about titans, I could teach you a few things while I'm here." They invited.

"Listen four eyes, if you dont get off me and take a shower in the next five seconds I'm going to take those goggles and shove the-"

"Hange just do as the brat says and take a damn shower." The captain cut in, trying to get his new squad member under control. Kaya didn't know whether to be grateful or angered by his interruption.

"LET THE 53rd RECON MISSION BEGIN!" Commander Erwin shouted, causing the ground to shake under the weight of horses and carts speeding towards the gates. Over the loud noises of horses galloping, she was positive she heard the section commander screaming with joy and Kaya couldn't find the words to describe her confusion.

They rode their horses for a while, only coming across a few titans along the way. Kaya didn't fight any, even though she wanted to show off her skills. In the distance she saw the remains of an old village, it looked like it had supplies and other necessities stationed for emergencies.

"Where are we?" She asked her squad.

"An old town in wall Maria. We set up a base here a few weeks ago, so now we just need to secure it." Replied the captain.

"Huh, I thought the objective was to capture a titan for the maniac with goggles." The ghoul said with annoyance. "Did they try and trick me into going on a suicide detour. What the hell." Kaya muttered to herself. The fox was shocked that the scouts were so laid back about their psycho section commander, she wondered if they were always like this.

"Rest assured, we'll be the ones to have to save them when they take off alone." Said the captain with a monotone voice. The ghoul had so many questions and a lot of bottled up anger aimed towards the section commander, however she tried to keep it hidden and didn't want to lose her cool on her first mission. But Kaya's internal tantrum was interrupted by a sudden shift in the air. Kaya's advanced smell could detect something was on the way, titans. Shortly after, a man who was stood on a roof also picked up the scent and alerted all the scouts to prepare for combat.

Before the ghoul could react, a familiar scientist leaped onto their horse and charged towards the man eating giant. "Yahooo just my luck." They screamed while charging straight towards the murderous creature.

"What's the hell, they're gonna get themselves killed." Kaya stated in shock.

"Yep and it's always our job to go after them." Oluo groaned as the squad got onto their horses. It was obvious that the scouts didn't have time for Hange's wild adventures and that none of them wanted to waste their time chasing a person who was content with dying.

The special operations squad quickly followed Hange into the forest and swiftly switched to ODM gear when reaching the trees. The ghoul swung from tree to tree at the same pace as her team and awaited orders from the captain. The soldiers didn't seem shocked until they saw the brunette chasing the titan.

"Huh, is this normal. Or are the titans afraid of them." Asked the fox.

"This is definitely not normal." Replied Eld, who's expression became plastered with shock.

Once they came to a halt, Kaya observed her surroundings and it wasn't until Hange screamed, that Kaya saw what was happening. Oluo was clenched in the titans hand. The ghouls reaction time was impeccable and she instantly aimed her hooks onto the titans face, in doing so, she cut the hand that had grabbed Oluo and used her gas to sit on the titans head.

"What's the deal with this thing." Kaya asked while stomping on its head, as she predicted, it didn't have any reaction to her. She was busy taunting the titan until she saw its hand shift towards Petra, causing the fox to cut the nape without hesitation. She stood on the titan as it came crashing to the ground, and was about to expose Hange to her built up anger. However, she was interrupted by the section commander.

"What is this?" They asked with a shaky voice.

"Huh?" The ghoul muttered and shifted her gaze towards what the scientist was staring at. "I thought the rotting corpse smell was coming from you, is that a body. Why didn't the Titan eat it?" The ghoul questioned. Her attention was drawn by the captain picking up what looked to be a notebook. "What's that?" She asked.

"Ilse Langner's hard labour" the captain responded without taking his eyes from the diary. "She wrote down everything up to her death."

The ghoul started to climb the tree that Ilse was in and began to rummage through to see if she could find anything useful. The tree had flowers decorated inside it and it looked like the titan did this on purpose. "I think the titan made Ilse a grave, as if to say sorry or something." The ghoul informed her superiors.

"Tch, a bit late for that." Oluo scoffed.

"Hey I just saved your life the least you can do is shut up." The ghoul retorted to her squad member.

"Listen up." Said the captain. "Bring back the body and any other evidence, I want a full report written on what you saw when we get back to headquarters. Lets go back to commander Erwin and relay everything we found today." Levi demanded the squad, the section commander was still frozen in shock of their discovery.

"Lighten up section commander, I'm sure Erwins gonna want to know more about titans now." Kaya said while taking the body out of the tree, her other squad members just watched in amazement at her nonchalant behaviour around a corpse. "Who's carrying Ilse back?" She asked but was left with no reply. "Fine, I guess I'm stronger than you all anyways."

Oluo was about to retaliate but was soon put to a stop when the ghoul sent him a sinister glare. Soon, they called their horses and brought back everything they needed back to the base which was unscathed by the chaos that had happened in the forest. The soldiers looked somewhat annoyed that Hange had made it back alive, however Hange's assistant, Moblit, was relieved.

After the higher ups told the commander the situation, they were given the instruction to make their way back into the wall and investigate more about Ilse Langner. Kaya struggled to comprehend the meaning behind all of this and had little understanding of titans to begin with, so she was beyond confused. Most of the scouts believed that this was a step forwards in discovering the titans secrets.

'If this is how many lives it took to make one step, then no ones gonna be alive to find out the truth.' She thought to herself, not wanting to ruin her comrades optimism.

On the way back to HQ, her squad ended up telling stories about how their first expedition's went. The fox found it hilarious that half of them had peed themselves in midair. "Seriously though, I don't even think I could do that if I tried." She teased.

"Hey it was scarier than it sounds." Defended Petra.

"Sure..." said the fox reluctantly. "I've got to admit, I thought it would be worse. The way people make the scouts sound is quite the opposite."

"Huh what do they say about us." Asked Gunther angrily.

"All good things." Kaya said with her hands in the air. "Apart from that you're all suicidal maniacs that waste 'good tax payers money'. You know the general stuff." She quickly said hoping they didn't catch much of it. In the end they all started laughing, the ghoul liked the new feeling of belonging and wanted to cherish it as long as she could.
