Chapter 3

After Kaya takes in the marvellous view, she feels someone firmly grip her arms and tie her hands behind her back. Feeling betrayed, she turns her head and gets ready to boot her foot to whoever was doing this.

"What the hell, we had a deal." She huffs

"Just because you're one of us doesn't mean we trust you." The captain says whilst tightening the ropes. Against her instincts, Kaya complies, and gets on a cart to where she assumes will take her to the scouting legions base. The long and awkward journey causes her to get agitated, so she taps her foot, eager to see what will happen to her.

Kaya was now in a forest. She knew about them from the books she stole, but the pictures could never compare to the real thing. She could hear birds chirping and smell all the wildlife around her. 'Maybe I made the right choice after all' she thought whilst taking in the scenery around her. Up ahead, she saw what looked to be a castle, it was beautiful and nothing like the architecture from the underground. As she was mesmerised by the sight of the castle, she was interrupted by the jolt of the cart stopping. The commander, and the rest of the squad that travelled with her motioned for her to go inside.

Within no time, they made it to a hall, leaving no time for her to look at the interior of the castle. She had assumed this was where she was going to be lectured about, what she can and cant do.

Her expectations right as commander Erwin took the seat at the end of the table. "What's your name. The fox of the underground is a bit of a mouthful." He asks looking towards the ghoul.

"Kaya" she answers. Leaving the rest of the table so shocked at her blunt response.

"You will be stationed in your own room besides captain Levi and cadet Petra Ral. Your training will begin at dawn and the special operations squad will see to it that you are ready for our next upcoming expedition." He states while gaining a few mutters from the other cadets at the table. "I must go now, I have other important matters to deal with concerning the expedition routes." Just like that, commander Erwin got out of his seat and left. Leaving the rest in a uncomfortable silence.

"Petra" the captain broke out.

"Yes Captain?" The other female of the squad answered. She had shoulder length, strawberry blonde hair and brown eyes. No one could deny the fact that the bright smile on her face made her look adorable.

"The brats your responsibility." He instructed, taking a sip of his tea. Petra swiftly nodded and stood up.

"Come with me I'll give you a tour." The strawberry blonde said before turning away and continuing her exit. Kaya hesitated for a moment but then shortly followed her. The silence was deafening and the ghoul was growing was growing impatient by the slow pace they were going. Being a thief in the underground, she didn't do much walking. She always had somewhere to be or someone to run from.

"So whats it like living in the underground? I've heard things but I want to know from someone who has actually lived there." Petra asks, making small talk.

Kaya was well aware of the rumours people from above ground spread about the underground. They thought that people like her were savages and uncivilised. On the contrary, most people from the underground were a lot cleaner than those who lived above ground, it was a strange habit most people from there had.

"Different." Kaya said. However, when she looked at the frown on the girls face, she could tell she was disappointed by her short answer. "For instance there aren't any trees or plants." The fox continued.

"Oh." Petras eyes lit up inviting her to tell more.

"Well since there's no sunlight, the plants that do grow aren't too spectacular and the crops are often bad." Kaya added.

"Well, maybe someday I can show you some plants from here, we could always clean the garden." Petra said, hoping that the two girls could form a friendship. "Oh, and it will be great practice for you. The Captain is sort of a clean freak, so it will help you prepare for whats in store."

Kaya raised her eyebrows, not expecting the girl to send a passive insult her way. 'Was she implying that I've never cleaned before? Or was she just looking out for me' she pondered.

"I already know how to clean." Kaya defended. "Just because I'm from the underground, doesn't make me a tramp."

Petra raised her hands in defence. Shaking her head in response to what she had previously said. "No no no, I didnt mean it like that. I promise." She pleaded. From then on the strawberry blonde kept her mouth shut, trying not to provoke the hostile thief from the underground.

"This is where you will be staying." She paused waiting for a response she wouldn't receive. "Um, I left your uniform on your bed and don't forget that training tomorrow will start at dawn." She backed away beginning to leave.

"Thanks." The ghoul said, looking at Petra.

"Listen Kaya, I'm sorry for before, but that's not what I meant." Kaya nodded, making Petra's smile come back. "I hope we can be friends." She said walking away from the room. Kaya sighed in relief, she was finally alone. No joyful Petra asking questions, and no muttering squad glaring at her. Kaya, knew that the squad she was supposed to trust, hated her. They weren't even trying to hide it. However, Kaya wanted to show them how much her skills exceeded theirs, and was prepared to degrade their ego, if that's what it came to.

Night was starting to approach and Petra had checked on her multiple times to make sure she hadn't escaped, her persistence was tiring. But the fox of the underground wasn't going to ignore the new luxury's she had above ground and wanted to experience all the sights she had missed out on, including the stars. The window the room provided her with wasn't enough to contain her curiosity, so the ghoul had planned to wait until lights out, to sneak up onto the roof. The amber eyed girl had gathered that Petra came into her room every half hour, so when the girl hadn't shown for a while, Kaya was certain that she was asleep.

Slowly opening her window, Kaya crawled out and tried to find a route onto the roof. The ghoul smiled, she was already on the top floor but she had expected there to be more distance from where she wanted to go. Kaya turned around and used her strength to pull herself onto the roof. Once she was there, she tried to be as quiet as possible, in order to not wake up her new comrades. She had done it. She successfully snuck out and was now star gazing for the first time. It was marvellous, her amber hues now had the moons crescent reflecting in them and a look of shock was plastered across her face. Taking in the bright dots above her, she began to slowly melt into sleep.
.
.
.
Kaya awoke with a sharp pain in her side. 'Had someone just kicked her' she thought, only to have her questions answered by another kick. Letting her eyes adjust to the natural light of the sun, she realised that she was still on the roof, now regretting the fact that she had fallen asleep there.

"Get up." The harsh voice orders. "Your training was supposed to start at dawn." He says, kicking her once again.

"Jeez I'm awake you don't need to keep kicking me." Kaya groans, slowly coming to her feet.

"Tsk, learn some respect cadet." The captain says before walking away to climb through his own window.

Kaya wasn't letting this man get away with ruining her sleep and kicking her in the process. "Respect needs to be earned, captain" she mocks causing the short man to faulted his course.

"If I were you, I wouldn't be picking fights with the person who is responsible for keeping you alive on the expedition. Not to mention your superior." He said coldly.

The ghoul let out a small chuckle. "Who said I'd need your help in killing those monsters." She retorted.

"If that's what you want then fine, you look like you would make great snack for the titans anyways." He stated before continuing his journey through his window.

Kaya waited until the captain was out of sight before coming up with a response. "I can't say the same for you. Your not even big enough to be considered a snack." She muttered to herself. The fox couldn't deny the fact that she was the same height as the captain, but that wouldn't stop her from calling him short.

Shortly after, she followed his actions and went through her own window to change into her uniform. The fox had always hated the look of the clothes that the soldiers wore, it looked so plain and boring. Kaya was glad that Petra had given her a variety of shirts for her to chose from, she let out a sigh of relief and put on a dark grey button up. Putting on the harness was child's play for a thief who had used ODM gear for years, so she made quick work of getting ready. Not needing to eat breakfast, she ran to the training grounds to meet with the rest of her squad.

When she arrived they were all waiting impatiently at her lateness.

"You were told to meet here at dawn." Informed the second in command of the squad, Eld Jinn.

"She probably doesn't know what dawn is, she is from the underground." Assumed the man named Gunther. The other members agreed with him and nodded in understanding.

"No. Im aware of what it means, I just overslept." She responded.

The tall blonde seemed to not ask further questions and decided that they will assess the foxes ODM skills first. Kaya let loose a smirk and followed Petra to her new gear. After applying it with ease, Kaya made her way to the forest ready to depart in a display of experience.

"It doesn't look like they are here." Observed Petra while shifting her eyes in different directions. "Do you know how to kill a Titan?" She questions the ghoul.

"Yeah. All I have to do is cut up the nape, right? Seems easy enough." The amber eyed girl said while flipping her duel swords. Petra was about to comment on her way of holding the ODM gear but before she could say anything, the ghoul had already taken off into the forest.

Kaya flew through the forest at full speed and used the trees to propel her forward. From first leaning to use the ODM gear, she had developed her own technique in order to limit the amount of gas waisted but keep at her top speed. It came in really handy in a situation like this. She kept soaring in the same direction until her eyes widened. A Titan dummy had just spun out right in front of her. She had no time to stop so she used her built but speed to fly straight past it. Once her hooks were retracted, she spun around and shot them in the direction she had just came from. Kaya then used her gas too push her towards the Titan dummy at full speed, slicing it in midair before landing on the tree her hooks were attached to. She smirked at her victory, then continued on her path to find more dummies.

Once Kaya had 'killed' 10 Titan dummies, Eld instructed her to make her way back to Petra so they could check out how much gas she used. The ghouls smirk only grew more, Kaya knew she used little to no gas, only using some when she was going for the kill. Making her way out of the forest, Kaya could already hear the man she knew as Oluo judging her on her skills.

"I bet she used up so much gas that she will be walking out of there." He snickered earning a small chuckle from the fox of the underground. Kaya then attached both her hooks on a branch above her and swung down towards the ground, hanging there awaiting their response. Almost instantly, she was told to show them the gas canister, to which she complied with a smirk on plastered on her face. The whole squad were shocked but tried their best to keep a neutral face, other than Oluo who was clearly not impressed.

"Did you change your canisters in the forest." He asked annoyed.

"Nah that's just hard work. You should try it sometime." The ghoul spoke with a teasing tone.

Petra clapped her hands together trying to prevent the awkwardness from spreading. "So how about we head to lunch now and then we can do some combat training?" She suggested. The rest of the squad nodded and headed towards the castles hall to make their meal, while Petra stayed with Kaya to put away the ODM gear.

This was the moment she had been dreading. Kaya couldn't eat human food without it weakening her and her needing to vomit, to her is was like eating sand. While Gunther was making food, Kaya took out the tea bags from her pocket and began to boil the water. She was beginning to get odd looks from her comrades, to which she pushed aside and carried on. She may have been viewed as selfish for not offering the others a hot drink but she knew it was for the better. Gunther was now setting out plates for the squad and tilted his head the the side when the amber eyed girl pushed away the plate.

"I don't want any." She said bluntly, hoping the squad wouldn't further question her reasons.

To her dismay, Petra was the first to speak up. "Huh, but you need your energy if your gonna kill the titans. And aren't you hungry, you didn't get any breakfast, did you?"

"I'm just not hungry." She answered. Thankfully no one else questioned her and she carried on drinking her make of tea.

After the rest of the crew had finished their food, and tidied (Curtesy of captain Levi), they all made their way outside to practice their combat. Since the captain saw her as an experienced fighter, he put her against the biggest of the group. Kaya sent a glare towards the captain. She knew this was his way of getting revenge for their last fight, but she wouldn't allow him the satisfaction of watching her lose.

Both Kaya and Eld were now in fighting positions, both their fists clenched waiting for someone to move. The fox let loose a smirk and ran towards the blonde, causing him to stretch his arm and attempt to punch Kaya before she could get close. Kaya saw this and stepped to the side of the outstretched arm, causing it to miss her by a hair. Without hesitation, she grabbed the arm and pulled Eld forwards, dragging his arm behind his back in the process. Kaya then pushed Eld towards to floor with his arm still in her clutches, next she placed her foot on his back, causing him to be unable to fight.

Most of the squad were surprised at how fast she managed to deal with the fight which only boosted her ego. Next up to fight her was Oluo, since he had been bothering Eld about his poor attempt. The ghoul could instantly tell that this fight would be easier so she waited and allowed Oluo to make the first move. Oluo planned out his actions and decided that it would be best to face her head on and use her small physique against her. Kaya stared at the man eagerly waiting for him to get this over with. Suddenly, Oluo made his move and sprinted towards her with both his arms outstretched. The fox thought fast and used her strength to spin on her heal and send a sharp kick directly at Oluos ribs. He stumbled to the side but managed to stay on his feet. In hopes of trying to catch the girl off guard, he pulled the same move again. Kaya sighed and grabbed the arm that was closest, along with gripping her other hand on his shoulder, she then lifted her knee with immense force and brought it upwards towards the joint in Oluos shoulder. He winced in pain and fell to the floor.

'Mission accomplished' Kaya thought, hoping that it would teach Oluo some respect and to not bad mouth her anymore.

"Who's next?" She smirked. No one was volunteering, and she assumed that they were all afraid of her.

That was until she heard a familiar voice from behind her. "How about me." Said the stoic voice of the captain.

"You want a rematch so soon?" She taunted while her grin only grew. The only response she received was a slight click of his tongue, while he got into a fighting stance. "This is gonna get interesting." She stated, following his moves.

"Who do you thinks gonna win." Enquired Gunther from the sidelines.

"Obviously the captain, he's the strongest." Scoffed Oluo.

"I think Kaya has a good chance." Said Eld while rubbing his arm which had previously been grabbed.

After a while of sending death glares at one another, Kaya makes her first move. She leaps towards the captain ready to punch him in the face. The captain raises his hands to block and Kaya smirks. 'Just as I predicted' she thought. While the captain is preparing to block her punch she swoops under him and pounces back up when his arms are more lowered. She then wraps her arms around his neck and one of his arms, locking her hands as she prepares her next move. Using all her strength, she flips the captain over her shoulder, not giving him a moment to react before he was slammed against the ground. Kaya then held him in place trying to seize her victory and revenge for the way he woke her up.

The captain didn't allow her to win so easily and brought up his knees, hitting her in the stomach until she let loose of her grip. Levi was quick to get back on his feet and defeat the girl, but Kaya was still on the floor catching her breath. The man with the undercut took this to his advantage and went to kick the ghoul while she was still recovering. Kaya let out a chuckle.

"I'm called the fox for a reason." She shouts while swooping her legs under Levi's. He instantly fell to to floor and Kaya gripped his arm against his back, like she had earlier done to Eld. The ghoul smiled in triumph. She had won.

"You cant do that its cheating." Claimed Oluo. "You tricked him and pretended you were hurt." He stated, trying to defend his idols honour.

"There aren't any rules in a real fight, I didn't cheat." She ghoul said coldly. When she turned around, the captain had already gone, walking away to his sleeping quarters. She had a few questions about him, but she didn't want to be so upfront, so she decided to just ask Petra later.

When she arrived at the castle, she decided to knock on Petras door, who was quick to answer. "Hey Kaya. Come in we need to talk about how you finally got Oluo to shut his trap." She practically squealed with excitement. Once they were inside her room she bombarded the fox with questions.

"Where did you learn to fight like that? Can you teach me?" She asked.

"I learnt when I was in the underground and yeah, sure I can teach ya a few moves." Said the ghoul.

The girls talked for a while and Kaya occasionally demonstrated how to preform some of the moves she had in training, she got so off track that she had almost forgotten what she went there to ask. "So. Whats the deal with the captain, I cant even imagine that guy going through the training corps." The amber eyed girl asked.

"No one really knows. Ive heard a few things though, like that commander Erwin dragged him here kicking and screaming."

"Huh but where did he come from, and why would the commander do that?" Asked Kaya, until it finally dawned on her. 'Erwin did the same thing to me, does that mean Levi is from the underground too? It cant be the same Levi that I stole from once. Could it?' She questioned herself. Her thoughts were soon interrupted by a knock at the door. Petra was quick to ask the owner of the knock to come in and captain Levi entered.

"Tell the others to meet in the hall." He simply stated then left.

Petra complied and told the ghoul that she would meet her there. Kaya didn't have a chance to object before Petra had ran off to alert the others. So she made her way over to the hall. When she got there, she instantly heated the water to make her tea. Levi was sat over at the head of the table and she could feel his eyes lingering on her.

"If you want to say something then just say it already." She demanded, getting irritated.

He clicked his tongue and set down his cup. "Where did you learn to fight like that?" He asked.

"Where do you think." She said in annoyance.

"Well then who taught you?" He asked again.

"That's classified." She responded quickly. She couldn't go around letting people know she worked for Kenny the ripper. Besides, she hadn't seen him in years and had managed to make her own name and fame without him. "What about you." She asked causing him to raise a brow. "Aren't you from the underground." She pondered.

He scoffed and went back to drinking his tea, but that was the response she needed to know that her theory was correct. "We're you the guys who always went around on your ODM gear." She persistently asked. "Ha I managed to steal from you once. Ended up savouring a few extra gas canisters and a bit of cash that was lying around." She taunted. The captain remained silent, not giving her the glory of her personal achievement.

Kaya's beverage was now made and she made her way to sit next to Levi. She planned to annoy him some more until the rest of the squad sat down around them.

"Thanks to a certain someone, the expedition date has been move up to tomorrow. You can thank four eyes later." He informed then taking a sip of his tea.

"Why do you drink your tea like that? It's kinda weird." Kaya asked out of the blue.

He ignored her comment and asked if their were any volunteers for cooking duty. Kaya couldn't cook if her life depended on it, the thought of having to be around human food so long made her feel sickly. Unfortunately, all eyes were on her, and she knew they wanted her to cook. Defensively, the ghoul raised both hands in the air. "I can't cook at all. If I even try, I guarantee that you will end up with food poisoning." Her statement caused Petra to volunteer out of fear of food poisoning.

After a while Petra set the table and once again, the ghoul pushed away her plate. The squad tilted their heads. "I'm not hungry." The ghoul said, not making eye contact.

"But I made a portion for you. I don't want it to go to waste." Said the strawberry blonde who was now pushing back your plate. Kaya didn't want to have to deal with this so she once again pushed her plate to the side, without saying a thing. "C'mon Kaya, you haven't eaten all day." The girl protested.

When Petra's back was turned, Kaya didn't miss the opportunity to quickly drink the rest of her tea and leave. Not even turning back to look at the squad.

Once Kaya was in the comforts of her own room, she made her way towards the window and followed the same routine she had made the night before, slowly falling asleep under the stars.
