Chapter 28

It was the day before the retake of wall Maria, everyone had been busy doing their own duty in preparation and there'd been rumours that the scouts would receive meat, which was a rarity within the military. Upon awakening, Kaya felt obligated to confront Hange about telling Moblit, the scientist would probably be stuck in meetings all day so it would be best to catch them while they had time to spare. Determined, the ghoul marched towards Hange's lab, crossing all the early birds in the scouts.

She knocked three times before poking her head through the doorway. "Hange, you here?" Kaya yelled.

"Let yourself in." The section commander returned, not even bothering to turn their head towards their guest, until she was in front of them. "Kaya?"

"What gave it away?" The ghoul rolled her eyes.

"I've been thinking about my actions yesterday and I've come to the conclusion that I was in the wrong. Although Moblit is my most trusted friend, I should have asked your permission before telling him. However, I promise, I would have never done it if I doubted his loyalty, which I don't. Could you possibly forgive me?" Hange explained.

"I don't exactly blame you for telling Moblit, I was just a little pissed off that you didn't ask me first. Besides, I may have overreacted a little." The thief added, she did feel a little guilty about her rudeness to Moblit so she decided it would be best to apologise to him too. "Is Moblit here?"

"MOBLIT!" Hange shouted, causing the blonde man to stumble into sight, fearing something bad had happened.

"Y-yes section commander?" He stuttered, trying to catch his breath.

"Oh, I just wanted to apologise for yesterday. I overreacted and I'm sorry." Kaya briefly summarised.

"It's fine."

"Say, I'm in meeting all day. Moblit, would you mind taking lead on Kaya's experiments?" Hange asked her assistant. "That's if you're still up to it?" They turned their gaze to the ghoul.

"Well, I've got nothing better to do." Kaya answered truthfully. She really couldn't think of anything that could have clogged up her schedule, Levi was stuck in meetings and it would be weird for her to hang out with teenagers all day. So she complied to Hange's request and put her faith in Moblit, if Hange could trust him, then so could she.

"Great! Moblit, make sure to check her immunity, regeneration, food habits, and her abilities. I've got to go discuss our situation with the titan serum." The section commander gathered their things and walked over towards Kaya, patting her on the back in supportive manner. That, or they were just confirming to Moblit that the ghoul wasn't a threat.

Then it was just Moblit and Kaya. Alone. They'd spoken on a few occasions but it didn't make their situation any less awkward. "So, what do ya wanna check out first?" Kaya asked.

"Well, I suppose that we test your abilities before we stunt your potential. Why don't we go outside so we don't break anything?"

"Sounds good to me but I'd like it if I didn't get caught by the others." They made their way towards the outdoors, Moblit took into account Kaya's request and they went into a nearby forest so they wouldn't be seen by any of the scouts. He brought his sketch book which already contained a brief drawing of the thief's activated eyes from her last visit to the lab.

The tests were simple, how high she could jump, how fast she could run, and to test her strength she kicked down a few trees. Moblit looked a little scared when he saw the Birch trees tremble at the force she delivered. "Do you have any other abilities?" He asked. "Hange mentioned something called a kagune?"

"Oh yeah." The ghoul activated her kagune. She'd recently found out that hers was different from her parents, that minutely upset her because now she didn't have much to remember them by, other than Yeager. Moblit looked a little freaked out so she explained as much as she could without him having to ask. "Don't ask me about the science, I probably won't be able to remember all the stuff I read in that book anyways. But, here's what I do know: it's as durable as me and I can fully control it, it's more of an extension of my body rather than a weapon. Also, this is one of the only ways to hurt me, self inflicted injuries. That or some really powerful being."

"Hold on, I'm gonna sketch that." The soldier ordered, Kaya just hoped that no one would see his sketches until she died. It would be too much of a hassle if everyone found out now.

"Sure, just don't let anyone other than the inner circle see them."

"Who's in this inner circle?" He asked.

"Me, you, Hange and Levi. Though I'm planning on telling my squad after we retake wall Maria." The thief responded.

"Captain Levi, huh? I would've thought he'd be the last person you'd tell." Moblit continued to sketch.

"Why's that?"

"He seems so strict, as if he wouldn't hesitate to kill a liability to humanity. Either that or he'd be so stuck up that he'd tell Erwin."

"Wow, we clearly have different impressions of Levi. I've always considered telling him I was a ghoul, but he found out before I could and he cornered me. But it worked out, he understood more than I thought anyone would. He's always stuck by me, no matter what." She replied with all honesty, trying to change Moblit's mind on Levi's personality.

"You speak quite highly of him. Perhaps I'm missing something." He quirked a brow.

"Why're you looking at me like that." Kaya questioned. "Seriously, it's creeping me out."

"Looks like the sun will be setting soon, we better get back for that feast the scouts are throwing." Moblit changed the topic.

Kaya scoffed. "You know I can't eat, right? This meal will be as exciting as watching dust gather."

"You never know, I heard there'll be meat for the first time."

"Can't eat that either. I'm just hoping Eren starts a fight because things have been getting boring around here."

The two scouts walked back to the scouting legions base, Moblit quickly scanned over his notes before hiding his notebook in his jacket pocket. Kaya was already engulfed in the smell of the scouts's meals being cooked so she was quick to complain about it. "Ugh, I can already smell that crap their making in the kitchens." She held her hand over her nose.

"You can smell that from here?" He asked.

"Yeah, but to me, human food smells and tastes like cow shit. I try to stay away from it but I'm gonna go to the meal thing tonight for motivational purposes." Kaya waved at Moblit. "I'm gonna head back to my room, it was nice talking with you."

"Same here." The soldier answered. Then the two walked in different directions, Moblit had to relay information to Hange where as Kaya wanted to read into her ghoul book a little more. It had been a while since she'd first gained possession of her book and she'd finished it about a month ago, it was no help to her and was better off being with Hange anyways. At least they'd be able to understand the science behind it and whatever the hell Rc cells were.

After scanning through the pages of her book for a while, she got changed into her casual clothing for the scouts final meal before the expedition. She wasn't going to eat anything, she couldn't, but it would still be nice to be there for her friends. Plus, she wouldn't want to miss another one if Eren's pointless fights with Jean, she just wanted to see what would happen if Mikasa didn't intervene like she normally did.

Finally, Kaya chose out her outfit, a shirt, high waisted trousers, and some suspenders to tie it all together. Kaya wasn't a fashionista at all, but she liked to think she had style that didn't consist of the basic long skirt and button up look. Soon enough, the bell rang for meals and the ghoul heard a knock at her door, she quickly gathered that it was Levi by his scent.

"You coming to this thing or not?" He asked.

"Nice to see you too." She rolled her eyes. "Anyways, yeah, I'm going. Why? Were you missing me?" She teased.

Levi made his usual 'tch' noise and the duo walked to the dining hall. "They're giving out meat tonight, so stay on guard, don't want anyone going out of control."

"My bets on Sasha. Remember that time we caught her in the pantry, she tried to eat me." Kaya recalled. It had been a while since she'd caught Sasha stealing but the ghoul just assumed that she'd changed her tactics to stealing when she wasn't around.

"How've you been, I heard you were in meetings all day with Erwin?" Kaya wondered.

"Just the usual, don't trust Kaya. However, we came to discussing the titan serum, I've got full control over who I give it to." Levi answered.

"Does it really matter how much serum we use? Reiss only managed to get a little sip yet he turned out a titan." The ghoul questioned.

"Beats me, I'm just the one who has to jab someone with it."

"Just don't use it on me, I'd rather die than become a titan. Hell, I don't even think I can become a titan, you'd just be wasting it." The amber eyed scout sighed. It would be cruel if she were to become a titan, she'd already lived her life eating humans with no choice, but if she were a titan, she didn't even want to imagine what would happen.

"I shouldn't have to, you can easily just heal your fatal wounds."

"Yeah, I've got some talent." She smirked.

The scouts then walked into the dining hall, sitting next to each other on the same table as Hange, Erwin and Moblit. Erwin looked as cautious as ever, but at least Moblit and Hange knew that she wasn't a threat. The four scouts at the table dug into their meals, where as the ghoul just sipped her tea, watching the excitement around her.

"This may be a special night but we don't need the public knowing of our plans. So behave like the disciplined soldiers you are." A higher up ordered.

"Is that? It is. Meat." Connie whispered.

Sasha out her hands to her head, trying to process her meal. "Am I dreaming?" She asked herself.

"All right, here's to the retaking of wall Maria. A toast-" The higher up was about to raise his glass but was cut short by the screams of the scouts, instantly eating their food.

"Calm down, everyone will get some okay."

"Hey a piece that big counts for two."

"Don't be crazy."

"Well I'm worth two of you on the battle field, maybe I should get your portion."

"Like hell."

The ghoul had to cover her ears at all the noise being made, it was an understatement to say the scouts were eccentric. Kaya averted her gaze towards the group she knew would cause the most trouble, only to see Connie and Jean attempting to pry Sasha from the tables meat.

"What the hell do you think you're doing potato girl? No way are we gonna let you pull this shit!" Jean yelled.

"Drop the meat Sasha, cmon, I really don't wanna have to kill you!" Connie begged.

"You can't eat the whole thing alone, you pig." Jean managed to steal the meat from Sasha, but at what cost? The brunette was now pulling the same stunt she pulled with the ghoul and trying to eat Jeans hand instead. "AHHHHHHHHH, YOU'RE EATING ME, MY HAND!" Jean screamed.

"Sasha that meat is Jean, we don't eat our friends, okay!" Connie shouted.

"Guess we all saw that one coming." Kaya said to Levi.

"I never thought it'd be this feral." Levi watched in amazement.

"Who's brilliant idea was it to serve meat?" Hange asked the higher ups.

In the end, Sasha ended up being tied up outside, away from any of the meat she craved. She kinda deserved it but that didn't stop Kaya from feeling a little sorry for her. However, she truly felt sorry for Armin who was sat in between Eren and Jean, the two who would always cause trouble or start a fight out of the blue.

"The ones who really suck, are the suicidal maniacs who think the only way to fight is to charge in blind, right?" Jean leaned over to Eren. Armin could already tell this wasn't going to end well.

"Her we go again." Kaya motioned towards the titan shifter.

"Are you talking about somebody in particular?" Eren threatened.

"Yeah, looking right at him, suicidal maniac."

"You see the funny thing is, I recently discovered that I'm actually a pretty normal person. So, hey, if that's how you really see me then maybe you're just a coward, right Jean?"

The room went silent for a split second until both Eren and Jean grabbed onto each other's shirts and began to turn up the volume. Everyone else tried to carry on eating their meal, normally Mikasa would stop the two from fighting but when she continued to sip her water, everyone grew to become concerned.

"You think you're so cool, don't you! You piece of shit!"

"That's a lovely mane you're growing there, horse face!"

"You jerk!"

"You're gonna rip my shirt!"

The scouts bickered, throwing fists every now and again. "Why doesn't the brat stop them?" Levi asked the ghoul.

"That may have been my fault, I told her that they'd never learn if she kept babying Eren. Oops." She confessed. It didn't take long for Eren and Jean's punches to become sloppy, they were obviously tired out because no one was even bothering to intervene in their worthless fight. Looking around the room, everyone seemed to be smiling at the poor attempt of a fight.

"Cmon." Levi dragged Kaya towards the fight. "They're our squad, our responsibility."

"Bullshit, they can take care of themselves." Kaya retorted.

Levi sighed once the duo reached the pitiful fight. "Hey." Levi introduced right before he punched Jean in the gut. Kaya was quick to follow his moves and punched Eren equally, leaving both the scouts lying in the floor in pain. "That's enough celebrating, go to bed." The captain ordered, getting interrupted by Jean puking all over the once clean floors. "And clean that up."

Just as instructed, the scouts went to bed, it'd been enough trouble for one night and it was mainly caused by the Levi squad. Scratch that, it was all because of the Levi squad. Mikasa, Eren and Armin left earlier than the others and went outside for a walk. Where as, everyone else left the dining hall in a complete mess, irritating both Levi and Kaya.

"You know, if it bothers you that much, we can clean this up a little?" The thief suggested.

"Who said it bothers me?" Levi asked.

"Please." Kaya rolled her eyes. "You're looking at those dishes as if they're titans. I'm just glad that the scouts cleaned up after Jean."

"I'll admit that it annoys me, but I'm not about to waste my time cleaning up after the others. Do you want to go on a walk?" The captain suggested.

Kaya jumped down from her seat on the table and stood beside Levi. "I'd love to." She answered as they began their stroll. Millions of thoughts flooded Kaya's head. She didn't mean to say it like that, or did she? The ghoul couldn't think straight. 'What if he takes that the wrong way? Did that come off wrong?' The ghoul rapidly procrastinated.

"Don't take this the wrong way, but I want you to look out for yourself." Levi stated out of the blue, Kaya tilted her head in confusion. "If it comes down to the death of you or your comrade, I don't want you risking your life."

"I could say the same for you, you dived in to save Mikasa too. And, I'm pretty sure the armoured and colossal are gonna show up, along with that beast titan that was spotted at Utgard castle. It's too dangerous for you to take them on alone, you can always rely on me." She stopped a moment. "If it comes to it, I'm going to use my full power to beat them. They've taken away so much from us, I'm not letting them take anything else."

"You're good at keeping up the soldier act, I almost believed you." Levi countered.

"Excuse me?"

"You heard me. You don't care about humanities success or stopping the titans."

"So what? I'm still a soldier, even if my goal is different." Kaya defended. "What's with you tonight, you've been acting a little strange lately?" She asked.

"When I found out you were a ghoul, I started to wonder why you stayed with the scouts. You made it clear that you didn't want to join us when we captured you, and I had my suspicions that you'd run away as soon as we reached above ground. But you didn't, at first I thought it was because you didn't have the strength to fight off my whole squad, however, you're a ghoul. You could easily overpower them and make a run for it. So why did you stay?" Levi questioned.

"I don't really know."

"How can you not know?"

"I just don't. I had nothing in the underground, other than my name on a few wanted posters. Here, it's different. I have friends, a purpose, and someone I admire. I guess I stayed because I wanted more. Does that make me selfish?" She asked.

"Not at all. You said you have someone you admire, you gonna tell me who it is or what?" Levi answered.

"Depends. I don't know my feelings for him myself. If it's not mutual then I might ruin something good." She replied. "Plus, if I die, it's gonna sting."

"Does this guy know you're a ghoul?" He pressed.

Kaya stayed quiet, if she told him the truth then he'd surely know that he was the person she was referring to, she didn't know if now was the time for these matters to be discovered.

"Hey, is that Eren, Mikasa and Armin?" The ghoul changed the subject.

"Are you just going to avoid the question?" Levi sighed at Kaya's childishness.

"Probably."

"Do I know this guy?" He continued to pry.

"Maybe?" She answered.

"Then who is he?"

"How about you? Do you have a special someone?" She reversed the question, trying to make Levi's thoughts go elsewhere. The captain went silent, giving Kaya all the information she needed. "By the walls, you do?"

"I never said that?" The captain instantly defended.

"Don't be like that, you interrogated me, now it's your turn." She folded her arms.

"How about we compromise?"

"I'm listening." The ghoul beckoned.

"You answer my questions, I'll answer yours. No names mentioned." He demanded.

"Fine, do I know this person?" The amber eyed girl asked.

"I suppose you know her. Describe the guy to me." Levi quickly finished his question.

"That doesn't sound of much a question, but I guess I'll play along." She shrugged. "He's strong, loyal, understanding and I guess he can be kind at times. Now describe her to me."

"Annoying, demanding, childish, but strong and resilient."

Their conversation was more of an interrogation rather than a friendly chat. Both the scouts wanted to know each other's crush and none of them wanted to back down or share too much information on their part. After a while, the back and forth questions and answers were getting a little old, leaving the duo to stand in silence under a blanket of moonlight. They didn't know what they were doing, they were just staring at each other aimlessly. Unaware of the fact that they were edging closer by the second.

"Captain Levi, Kaya, what are you two doing out here." Eren and his friends walked towards them.

"Damn you Eren." Kaya cursed under her breath.

Authors note...... yeah, this kinda got a little bit cheesy towards the end. I feel as though neither Levi or Kaya have experienced love so they don't know how to act about it and that's why it's more of an interrogation. Also added another reason as to why Kaya dislikes Eren, the list just keeps on piling up    :)
