Chapter 22

Kaya was stood at the top of the wall, staring at the sunrise and the oncoming titan that blocked out and ruined most the scenery. The mountains in the distance were always a sight to see, the colours of the sky blended perfectly.

"I know we're all about to face off with a 120 metre titan, but damn, the view is amazing." She observed.

"We can go sightseeing after we take down that thing, don't get distracted." Said Levi, causing the ghoul to let out a sigh.

"FIRE!" A high ranking member of the garrison yelled.

The first line of defence against the Reiss titan commenced, dozens of canons fired straight toward the tsunami of steam. Kaya made sure to cover her ears in advance, not wanting the same incident to occur twice. Once the shots were fired, the squad waited to see the results.

"Well, how'd that do?" Asked Erwin.

There was a moment of silence, everyone hoped that they'd taken the titan down, but their hopes were contradicted when a giant hand crashed into the ground.

"FIRE!" Another round of canons fired for the titan, showing less and less precision each time.

"Looks like the field canons are even less affective." The commander stated.

"Makes sense, the canons on the wall have a way better angle. They didn't do shit to it either. What's the problem?" Levi contemplated.

"Unprepared soldiers, scrapped together canons and shallow leadership. The titans have always attacked from the south, not only is this a northern garrison, it's in the interior. Therefore, I can tell you for a fact this is the best we can get." Erwin explained.

"Yeah, that much is painfully clear, and of course your strategy for getting us through this battle is down to a gamble. Just like every other plan that you've come up with."

"Still, your gambles always manage to pay off, so there's still hope." The ghoul said, truthfully, she was shook to the core with Erwins precision when it came to his gambles, he wouldn't be a good enemy to make.

"Erwin, I brought the goodies. All the gunpowder, ropes and netting I could find. We still need to put it together though. Oooh I got this too, there's another one just like it a bit further down. Triggers held in place so once fired, it'll wind right back up just like ODM gear." Hange shouted.

The section commander skipped towards them with Moblit loosely following behind. He was pushing a weapon that looked as though it was loaded with explosives.

"So, we do any damage?" Hange asked.

"Imagine a swarm of flies pissing on it." The captain answered.

"Then we'll actually use these things." Hange replied with surprise.

"Captain Levi, Kaya, Jean, Sasha, Connie, you handle that side." The commander instructed.

"Yes sir." The younger cadets answered.

The group of 5 then ran towards the direction Erwin ordered them, shortly stopping once in position. Sasha, Jean and Connie were chatting amongst themselves when Kaya saw something she found hilarious. She tapped Levi on the shoulder and pointed to the titan shifter further across the wall. Eren, was punching himself with full force, leaving a few marks that would likely heal later. Mikasa was quick to hold Eren back and Kaya listened in.

"I just needed to beat the shit out of a useless brat real quick. With any luck, he's gone now." Kaya mimicked Eren's words, trying to copy his voice and posture. Levi sent her a questioning look.

"His words not mine." The ghoul raised her hands defensively. "I must admit, I taught him well."

"Did he have to make such a scene? He does realise he's not only representing the squad, but humanities hope too?" The captain wondered.

"In his defence, he isn't the sharpest knife in the draw." Kaya laughed.

"FIRE!" Another round of canons shot. Kaya once again put her hands on her ears, she wasn't fond of the artillery, but as long as it did it's job she could tolerate it. Just when the garrison gained hope, a huge wave of titan steam sent them all flying away.

"It's so hot." Connie put his hands in front of his face.

"Dammit, that's just our luck. The wind must have shifted." Levi explained.

"The winds can shift?" The ghoul shouted in both confusion and frustration. She was still getting used to life above ground.

A loud crash was heard and the Reiss titan became visible to the soldiers on the wall. Just then, two enormous hands grabbed the rim of the wall, destroying any soldiers in their path. But what scared everyone most was when the titan rose, it's whole frontal section of its body had been worn down by the ground it had previously been dragged across. Leaving its insides clear to anyone who had the guts to look.

Unfortunately, it only got worse from there. Titans intestines and other organs were falling from its open body and splattering into the district. Panic was arising inside Orvue and no one could blame them.

"Shit, it's breaking through, the city I grew up in, is about to be devastated." The garrison leader looked down at the district.

Levi put his hand on the soldiers shoulder. "The garrison has done its duty, let the scouts take it from here."

"Son of a bitch!" Kaya shouted, turning around to find the culprit. The ghoul had just been drenched in water without a warning. When she saw Sasha with an empty bucket in her hands, Kaya smirked. "Hey Sasha, remember that time when I found all the food reserves in yours and Mikasa's room?" She said in an above average volume.

Sasha looked mortified. "You said you wouldn't tell anyone." She pleaded, feeling utterly betrayed by the ghoul.

"Huh, you seriously pulled that crap again?" Jean responded with disbelief. "Does potato girl ever learn?" He teased.

At this point, the brunette looked completely deflated. "Cheer up potato girl, I won't tell Levi." Kaya patted Sasha's head, which didn't change the disheartened look on her face at all.

Once they had come back to their senses, Kaya pushed Hange's invention towards the rest of the squad. "All set commander." Armin concluded.

"On my mark. Now!" Erwin ordered as he shot a red flare into the sky.

The ghoul used the new weapon as if it were ODM gear, shooting it's hooks into the titans hand and allowing the barrel to speed into its target. Once they collided, huge explosions went off and the titan roared in agony, losing its balance to give the scouts a window.

"Eren go!" Erwin demanded.

Eren's titan carried a large bag of explosives over its shoulder and ran towards the Reiss titan, compared to Reiss, Eren was nothing but a flea. Both titans shrieked as Eren tossed the explosives directly into Rod's mouth. All went quiet and the scouts waited to see if their gamble would pay off.

Just as predicted, the bombs ignited as soon as they were approached by the heat caused by the titan. The sight wasn't pretty, in fact, it was quite disgusting. Reiss's skin was expanded and his whole body tried to prevent the pressure from escaping, unfortunately for him, it didn't work. The titan popped, sending pieces of it launching towards the city.

"Go deploy your ODM gear and finish it off!" The commander shouted.

Just as instructed, the Levi squad went airborne in attempt to cut down any piece of Reiss that could have been the nape. 1 metre high, 10 centimetres across, was what Kaya kept telling herself as she soared through the air. There were many pieces that matched the description so the ghoul had no choice but to engage towards anything that could have possibly been the enemy. She wasn't taking any chances.

Piece after piece, the ghoul sliced and sliced. Kaya just couldn't seem to locate the correct part, by the looks of it, everyone else was facing the same problem. That was until she caught the sight of long blonde hair chasing after a piece of the titan that was significantly bigger than the others. Historia had her reasons for being in the field, if she wanted to be queen then she'd have to show the people that she wasn't afraid, that she wasn't passive and uncaring like the fake king. Historia had to prove that humanity hadn't lost hope, and by fighting against the titans, she was proving just that.

As soon as Historia's blades pierced through the nape, the titan exploded, decimating into nothing but steam. Kaya used all her gas to chase after Historia, she was plummeting to her death and looked unconscious. So the ghoul sped towards the future queen and managed to push her into a cart full of hay just before she made impact. Although, the thief wasn't as lucky, she managed to collide with the floor rather than the hay. Kaya didn't mind, she would heal anyways.

"Hey you ok?"

"You're not injured are you?"

"It looked like you gave the final blow."

Historia slowly rose from the hay and confronted the crowd that had formed around the two scouts. "It's ok, my name is Historia Reiss and I am your rightful queen." The blonde declared.

The crowd started to applaud and once Kaya's wounds had healed, she put her hand on the queens shoulder. "Quite the spokeswoman, gotta say, I was kinda hoping you would be the one to take it down." Kaya admitted, Historia tilted her head. "That man controlled you your whole life, I'm glad that you finally broke free from that. Though, I'm gonna miss having you in the squad." The ghoul admitted. If she were to chose between humanities greatest idiot, the idiot protector, the book nerd, horse face, buzz cut, potato girl and the future queen, she'd clearly chose Historia.

Historia didn't say a word, not wanting to recall the fact she had just killed her own father. "So, you still gonna punch Levi when your queen?" The ghoul joked.

"Oh, I thought you guys were kidding around." Historia said, still with sorrow in her voice.

"After all the crap he's put you through, if you don't do it then I will." Kaya encouraged, Historia slightly smiled before the rest of the squad regrouped nearby.

"The rest of you can have the rest of the day off, you've been through enough this past week. Kaya, you're with me, Hange wants us to go and explore the Reiss residence, see if we could find anything of interest." Levi commanded.

"Yes sir." The teens saluted and walked away back to headquarters.

"We're seriously going back out so soon? Who knew being a soldier could be some tiresome." Kaya complained.

"It was never like this before Eren showed up." Levi replied.

"Great, I'll add that to my list of things to blame on Eren." Kaya joked.

The two scouts then rode horseback, travelling back to the place they had barley managed to escape from with their lives a few hours prior. When Kaya got trapped inside the fortress, she experienced the most fear she had felt in a long time, she was just grateful that she wasn't alone.
