I. Foster Children

"Jess? Jess hellooo?" Kenna waved her hand in front of her friends face. She had been talking to her about seeing a new movie but noticed Jessica rapidly texting and in deep interest in whatever it was.

"There are some new kids." Jessica blurted out to Kenna. "Eric just found out. We have to go see them. They just pulled in."

"Of course he did." Kenna muttered. "That boy is quick."

Jessica grabbed her wrist and started walking fast as she talked. "Apparently they're a family of foster kids. Doctor Cullen is their dad and he'd been here a few weeks getting settled in."

"I think you and Eric should be detectives when you are older." Kenna joked.

They came to an abrupt halt when Jessica stopped and pointed at cars with people coming out. "Those are the Cullens. They came from Alaska and I believe some are in their Junior year and some are in their Senior year."

Kenna kept silent and stared at the family in interest. She'd known what it was like to be a new kid here. She came in around Freshmen year and was stared at by many. The town of Forks wasn't small but it wasn't really big either. And so most people would notice new faces espiecially if you are outside a lot.

"They are all beautiful."

"I know right?" Jessica asked.

The two girls noticed that the tall muscular boy had his arm around the blonde girl and then a small girl with a pixie cut holding the blonde boys hand.

"Huh. They must be awfully close." Kenna noted.

"That's one way to put it." Jessica agreed.

The last boy walked out and as for as they could see; he was alone.

"Looks like one of them is a loner." Kenna frowned. It seemed the others were a couple and he was the only one without someone. Whether it was by choice or not she didn't know but she felt bad for the boy.

"He's hot," Jessica said. "I can already see the attention will be on them forever."

"Twenty dollars says I can befriend them."

"Oh you're on." Jessica smiled.

Kenna rushed into her class after getting out of her PE clothes late. "Sorry mr. M! Coach had to talk to me." She handed the teacher her note and sat in her seat which happened to be next to Edward.

"Thanks for the note this time miss Davidson." He gave her a sarcastic grin and left the note on his desk.

She mock saluted him and sat back in her seat, bumping into Edward on accident.

"Sorry," she whispered setting her bag down.

"Alright well today we'll be observing the behavior of planaria, a.k.a flatworms." The teacher said as he distributed two petri dishes per table. "We're going to cut them in half, then watch them regenerate into two separate worms."

Kenna started to feel Edwards stiffness and glanced at him to see him sitting straight and his hands slightly clenched. "Hi," she said hoping to get him to talk.

Edward put his hand to his nose to stop her smell from invading his senses and glanced at her awkwardly. "Hi," He said trying to sound as normal as possible.

Her scent was driving him insane and he knew he had to get out of there as soon as possible. He stared at her for a moment trying to reach into her thoughts and a confused look settled on his face. He looked at the person in front of him and became even more confused.

She took her dish with a slight frown and looked up at the whiteboard to listen to the teacher talk. "Okay then." She muttered under her breath thinking he couldn't hear. She smelled good, she didn't look horrible in her deep v red tank top, black leather jacket, and blue jeans, and she definitely hadn't said anything mean.

Once the teacher stopped talking and let them pack, she became to suffocated by his stare and met his eyes. "Why do you keep staring at me? Did I do something wrong?"

"No. It's just..." Just then the bell rings and he got up and left in a hurry freaked out by everything that had happened since she walked into class.

Kenna recoiled and huffed in frustration.

"He is staring at you." Angela whispered to Kenna as they sat at their lunch table and ate.

"He was rude to me earlier." Kenna muttered. "Stared but barely said a thing."

"I get the sense they'd rather keep to themselves," Jessica said. "You're never winning."

"Winning what?" Mike asked taking a seat next to Kenna.

"Kenna trying to make friends with the Cullens."

Mike looked at Kenna in surprise and she just shrugged.

"You owe me twenty." Jess smiled.

"Well technically we never put a time limit on our bet. And I'm not giving up yet." Kenna told her. Something about Edward was off, she could feel it somewhere inside her and she wanted to find it out even if he was gonna make it difficult.

"Guys I still need to find something for the paper," Angela said looking down at her photography camera.

"New kids... Who are they." Eric dramatized the sentence and moved his hands apart in the air as if showing what the paper would look like.

Angela threw a fry at him and shook her head as he laughed.

"How about something on speedo padding on the swim team or the girls winning streak in volleyball?" Kenna offered.

"Uu." Angela smiled. "I like those."

Kenna bowed forward as much as she could in her seat. "You're welcome."

"I liked mine better." Eric added.

"Yeah well it's not happening," Angela said clearly not a fan of the idea of making a whole section about the Cullens and having to take their photos.

Kenna sat back and shoved a fry in her mouth, tuning out everyone and focusing on the stare she felt on the back of her head. She was tempted to look back but refused to give him the time.

Kenna was at a diner with her friends when she went to take a call outside as her friends were being loud. She loved them but sometimes they could be a lot.

"Yes I'll come visit on a weekend." She told them she walked around a little bit as she pulled a joint out to smoke. "Y'know you could come see me if you'd ever leave." She lit it and took a puff. "You can't really stop me. You're younger than me." She laughed. Without paying attention she tripped over uneven sidewalk and fell to the ground. She shrieked at the suddenness. "Ouch."

"You alright?" A voice asked from behind her.

"Yes strange person." She picked up her phone and said, "I'll call you right back." She looked at her destroyed joint and groaned. "Dammit." She turned around and met with one of the new boys from school. "Oh it's you."

"Yeah.. sorry, you okay?"

"Yeah I just wasn't paying attention."

"Did you hurt yourself?"

Once he mentioned it she walked to the bench and pulled her pants up to see a cut near her knee. "Oh just my luck." She looked back at the boy and noticed him grow uncomfortable. "You good?"

"You should go... fix that."

She looked back at her leg and slowly rolled her pants down careful to not hit the wound. "It's good. Barely even feel it." She put her foot down and looked up but the boy was gone. "Alright then."

She limped back inside as she texted the person back to let them know she just tripped and was okay so they wouldn't worry.

"You okay?" Angela asked noticing the girl limping.

She told them what happened and Jessica visibly lit up at the mention of the boy.

"You'll never believe the information I found out about the Cullens."

"Yeah cause that sounds like a great time." Mike rolled his eyes.

"Well let's hear it." Eric told her.

Kenna wasn't surprised the girl investigated them she was popular and knew everyone and talked to everyone.

"So apparently they are like all coupled. The blonde girl and the muscular guy is Rosalie and Emmett. Both are in the grade above. And the little dark haired girl, Alice, she's with Jasper, the blonde who looks like he's in pain." Jessica told the them. "I swear Dr. Cullen's like this foster dad slash match maker. I'm a little jealous."

Kenna laughed. "Huh. Must be a miracle worker."

Jessica nodded enthusiastically. "Right?"

"But who's the loner boy?" Kenna asked.

"Edward Cullen," Jessica said looking at the girls. "Totally available."

Kenna glanced at Mike and felt bad for the boy. He'd always been interested in Jessica and while she was flirty she never really noticed Mikes attempts. She didn't want him to notice her strar so she looked back at Jessica and rolled her eyes.

"Of course you'd make sure to get that information." Angela smiled as she talked.

"Mom?" Kenna walked into her home and dropped her bag on the floor next to the couch.

"In the kitchen!" She heard her mom shout.

Kenna walked to the dining table and sat down staring at her mom. "Hey mom?"

"What?" Her mom glanced up from the tango she was cutting to see her daughter fidgeting.

"Have you heard about the... Cullen family?" She asked curiously, tucking a piece of her hair behind her ear.

"The Cullens?" Her mom looked in thought as she went back to cutting stuff for her sandwich, "oh yes I do. I met Dr. Cullen and we are lucky to have him as our hospitals surgeon. I've met his wife and heard about their kids but that's it."

"Oh wow. Makes sense why he adopted 5 kids."

"Have you made friends with them?" Her mother asked curiously.

"Trying to." Kenna shrugged.

Lisa, her mom, wiped her hands on her pants and smiled at her daughter. "That's nice of you."

"Wait when are you going to work?" Kenna asked.

"In a little bit," Lisa said as she stacked her sandwhich. "Do you have enough leftovers if you are hungry or do you want me to stop and get something?"

"Yeah I got enough. Thanks mom. Love you."

"Love you too."

"Something shifted today. I could almost feel it. And I'm going to find out what it is."

Kenna felt an odd sensation run up her back and she set her book aside. She walked to her window and looked out into the side patio then to the woods behind her house. Feeling uneasy she pulled the window down and locked it then closed the curtains.

She put her journal away and got ready for bed. Kenna had kept a journal since her father passed and it's been something to help her get through the day and reflect on herself ever since.
