22 Driving
Have you ever gone on a midnight drive?
Nowhere to go, no place to arrive?
Drifting through the sleeping towns
Nothing but the low car sounds
Passing cities far away
Their beckoning lights beg you to stay
Crossing fields of county crops
A house a mile, a few rest stops
You think about your friends at home
And you, in this place, all alone
Imagine lives behind those doors
Working, playing, doing chores
They all have problems, solved each day
A cheating wife, more bills to pay
We're all apart from one another
Even from each sister, brother
Although we live and love together
Hanging on to earthly tethers
In the end we're all alone
Driving down our lonely road
Driving driving up downhill
Driving driving driving still.
