Chapter 20
A month had passed after the "incident" and I haven't seen Itachi since then. The more I thought about his last words to me, I realized he probably just said that to make me feel better. He always knows when something is up.
I still thought about him though, but it was a lot easier to push those thoughts to the back of my head since I haven't seen him in so long.
Today, I was going to be a substitute sensei for Kakashi's team and I would take them on a D-ranked mission today. Kakashi had a meeting to attend to, so he asked me if I could fill in for him today.
I got ready and started heading over to the training ground where he told me to meet them at. I didn't know who is students were except for Sasuke, but I hoped they wouldn't be too difficult today.
What I did know is that seeing Sasuke wasn't going to help me forget Itachi.
I felt those thoughts of him coming back and I pushed them away quickly, realizing I was going to be late. I hope they wouldn't be annoyed with me for being five minutes late.
I saw them sitting on the grass and suddenly, the blonde one sighed with relief.
"Thank god!" He exclaimed. "I thought you were gonna be as late Kakashi-Sensei!"
"I'm sorry I'm late," I apologized. "I kind of took a while to get ready this morning,"
The pink-haired one just laughed unhumorously. "Oh, believe me, you're fine. Kakashi-Sensei was once four hours late,"
"Four hours late? What were you guys doing?" I ask.
"He told us to meet him in this training ground at 5 a.m. for a test and he ended up coming at 9," The blonde boy answered. "I took a big nap too!"
Oh, Kakashi. I bet he was late because of that book he reads.
"Anyway, we should introduce ourselves to each other," I said. "I'll start by introducing myself,"
I sat down on the tree stump. "I'm Kasumi Sarutobi," I started. "I'm 19 and I have two older brothers and one nephew,"
And possibly one more niece/nephew on the way.
I didn't say that out loud, but I mentally smirked at my own thought about Asuma and Kurenai.
I could see the blonde boy was a bit stunned by my name.
"We actually got a proper introduction this time," The girl said, half-joking.
The blonde boy started to introduce himself.
"I'm Naruto Uzumaki! I like ramen and I hate the three minutes you have to wait to eat instant ramen," He said. "I also plan on becoming Hokage someday!"
I chuckled at his part about ramen. The girl sighed and muttered under her breath. Then she looked up to face me.
"I'm Sakura Haruno," She started. "My likes are...uh..."
She snuck a glance at Sasuke and then she blushed.
"I mean uh, I like reading!" She finished.
I can see we're in the same boat.
"And I'm Sasuke Uchiha," he said and that was all to his introduction.
Great. I already can't stop thinking about his stupid brother and now those thoughts will be harder to push away because of how similar they look. I just sighed and put on a fake smile.
"Great," I said. "Now that we are all introduced, we can go see my Dad to get a mission. I know you guys probably want something higher ranked, but-"
Naruto cut me off.
"Yeah! Let's go! Make it S-ranked!"
I laughed and shook my head.
"I think we should stick with a D mission. If something happened to you guys while I was your leader, I'd never forgive myself," I said.
"Aw man," Naruto groaned.
We started walking to the Hokage's Tower and Naruto realized that the Hokage is my father at the last minute.
"Wait, the old man is your dad?" He asks.
"Yup, Asuma is my older brother," I replied.
"That's so cool. Old man third is one of the few adults who didn't treat me like garbage," Naruto said. "Aside from you of course. I don't think we ever talked,"
I felt bad for him. I knew why everyone treated him terribly and I always hated it. I treated everyone the same unless they cross me and get on my bad side.
We walked down the long hallway and up the stairs, then made it to Dad's office. I entered, already seeing Iruka sitting next to Dad and some other jounin I didn't know the name of was also sitting next to him.
Dad greeted us.
"So, what missions are there for today?" I ask.
Dad gave us a list of missions and Naruto was being picky about all of them.
"Be quiet you dobe, she can't pick a mission with your shouting," Sasuke retorted at him.
"Dobe?!" Naruto exclaimed and held a fist at him. "Who are you calling a dobe?!"
"You obviously," Sasuke rolled his eyes.
Sakura put her hands on her temple and then punched Naruto.
"Quiet! We're in the Hokage's office!" She scolded.
I sweatdropped and went back to trying to pick a mission. I didn't want to pick something that would be too easy for them and bore them to death, but that's hard when these are D-ranked. If I was being honest, some of these missions sounded boring to me as well.
"There's also a mission that's outside of the village that's D-ranked. You guys would be helping a farmer find his lost animals. They escaped and the farmer doesn't have anyone else to help him," Dad said, reading off of a piece of paper.
He knew full well I didn't like these missions as well.
"I guess we'll take that one," I said.
Naruto groaned loudly. "It's a wild goose chase! Literally!"
I smirked at his comment and turned to him, "Well at least it's out of the village,"
"Yeah, but still. I'm too skilled for this!" Naruto stated.
I chuckled at how confident he is.
"Naruto just take the mission!" Iruka lectured him.
After a few minutes of disagreeing, we finally left and to Naruto's dismay, we headed to the gates to go complete our mission.
I had to fight off my thoughts about Itachi that were trying to break through the entire time we were walking and it didn't help that every time I looked at Sasuke, all I could see was Itachi. Sasuke caught me looking, but he didn't think anything of it.
I looked away and sighed. I had to stop myself before I got in a sulky mood again.
I distracted myself by listening to Naruto's antics when he was yelling at Sasuke about being superior. Sakura ended up yelling at him to stop shouting, which was pretty ironic.
We reached the house in about twenty minutes and I saw the farmer who looked frantic.
"Are you the Leaf ninjas that are supposed to help?" He asks as we approached him.
"Yeah, what can we do to help you?" I ask.
"Well, for starters, my cows have wandered into the dirt road ahead and my geese escaped their pens too," He said.
"Naruto, you can go get the cows and the geese," I said and he went to the dirt road, still looking annoyed.
"Please be careful with the geese though!" I called after him.
Geese are ruthless.
"Anything else?" I ask.
"Yes," The farmer said. "My hens and my dog have escaped too."
I told Sakura to take the hens.
Finally, the farmer said that his dog escaped and I told Sasuke to go after the dog.
I just helped the farmer secure his gates so that way the animals can't escape again. Sasuke didn't even take that long to get the dog, by the time I secured the cow's fence he was already back.
The dog was happily following him and tried to nuzzle his nose into his palm. Golden retrievers are too cute.
Sasuke waited with me and the farmer on the others, and Sakura came back with the hens following her. Her eyes widened when she saw Sasuke petting the golden retriever and she looked like she was going to fangirl.
"Where's Naruto?" I ask as Sakura led the hens back into the pen.
"He's taking a long time. They're just cows. It shouldn't take him that long."Sakura said.
"I'll go check," Sasuke said and I followed just in case.
We both walked on the dirt road in silence and it was kind of awkward. Not because of anything weird, it's just that Sasuke doesn't really know me and I can't get his brother out of my thoughts.
"Come on you stupid cow! Move!" We heard Naruto shouting.
I got a better look, seeing that Naruto was trying to push the cow who was nibbling on his pant leg.
Sasuke sighed and muttered under his breath.
I chuckled seeing how frustrated he was getting.
"Move it! Or I'm gonna kick your butt!" He shouted again.
The group of cows just ignored him as if he wasn't there. Then Naruto started shaking his leg to get the cow to stop chewing on his pant leg while shouting at it.
Naruto then tripped and then sat up. The cow just licked his face.
I laughed a little.
"What a dobe..." Sasuke sighed and went over to help him get the cows back to the farm.
After he brought the cows back, we saw the geese by the pond. He went to go get them, but unfortunately, he angered one of them by yelling at it and they all started trying to attack him.
Sasuke shook his head seeing this and I smirked. Sasuke and I walked over to help out and I managed to calm the geese down by a miracle. The three of us successfully brought the geese back to their pen.
So far, I was doing fairly okay in keeping Itachi out of my head
