"Anson. I contacted the Canadians about the Lucie David case." Agent Smirnov walked up to Samantha, holding a file and a cup of coffee. He took a sip of the coffee and handed the manila folder to Samantha. "They're waiting in Meeting Room 3." Samantha gave him a polite smile before turning her attention back to the file. It was oddly light, likely because Lucie hadn't said a lot. The file had "Lucie David" scribbled across the top in Smirnov's distinctive, near-illegible handwriting. The file was held by a small silver paper clip that looked like it was ready to snap at any given moment, and contained a few loose notes, observations made by other agents and the most noteworthy things Lucie said during their interview, plus the traditional identification sheet, with a photo of the girl and her basic information.
Smirnov walked ahead of Samantha, but they could see the CSIS agents through the glass walls of the room. Samantha followed Smirnov through the door, where a blonde girl greeted them. She had deep aqua eyes, glossy pink lips and wore her bouncy blonde hair up in a half up half down style, with two small ponytails, tied with black ribbons on the back of her head, while the rest of her hair cascaded down her back. "Agent Natalia Haden. CSIS." She stuck her hand out for the Americans to shake it, and she spoke with a slight German accent. There was a missing chuck of her index finger. Smirnov shook her hand and smiled. "Agent Smirnov. FBI." Samantha followed his example, offering a polite smile and tucked the file under her arm to shake her outstretched hand. "Agent Samantha Anson." Natalia smiled. "You got a first name, Smirnov?" He laughed and shook his head.
They walked into the centre of the room, where more agents from various agencies stood. Natalia stood at the front of the room. "Hello, everyone. I am Agent Natalia Haden with the Canadian Security Intelligence Service. We here to discuss the disappearance of Laura Easton, the escape of Lucie David and new developments in the Church of the True Stars." Natalia looked around the room, taking in the sheer amount of people involved in the case. "Agent Anson, I know you're leading the investigation into Lucie David's escape." Her tone was questioning, inviting Samantha to speak.
"Firstly, Lucie is spelt with an IE." Samantha smiled and glanced towards Smirnov. "Her full name is Lucie Maria David, her parents are Sofia and Michael David. She said Tamara Lincoln was like an older sister to her, I'm not sure if she knows what happened to Tamara. She knows how to read and write, which is something, at least." Samantha flipped through the file, and small notes written by Lucie fell out of the folder. "She says that she comes from the Church of the True Stars, in a big building in a forest, so she didn't see much of Canada. She came in with a bag, there wasn't much in it, except a doll and a scarf." Samantha's gaze darted towards the black desk. "She didn't want to talk about how she was treated there." They paused for a second. "She said that she and Laura just walked out of the facility, but it was dark and she didn't see where Laura went."
Smirnov had been watching Samantha the entire time she spoke, with his head resting on his hand. Silence began to grow uncomfortably in the room. "Uh, I think right now our priority should be finding Laura and keeping Lucie safe." Smirnov awkwardly broke the silence. "We all know what happened to Tamara. She'd been out of there for months and they still found her. Laura might not have gotten as far as Tamara did." He looked at Natalia, who had taken a seat next to him, the seat that Emilia would usually take. "I think that we should focus the search near the border. She's probably still in Canada, but there's a chance she hitchhiked or something." Samantha gave him a look of mock offence, because how dare he steal their story?
"Where is Lucie now?" Natalia asked, tilting her head. "She's staying with an agent. Emilia Flores. She's a licensed foster parent-"
"And she will absolutely defend Lucie." Smirnov interrupted, mouthing an apology towards Samantha for interrupting her. She glared at him for a long moment before continuing, "Emilia's going to bring Lucie here later, but I don't think she should be questioned for too long. Keep questions easy, relevant and make sure to take lots of breaks."
"Could I join the questioning?" Natalia asked softly. She remembered when she was the girl getting questioned, and she would've loved to have known there were so many people fighting for her. "Of course."
They both needed to save this girl because they would never be able to save themselves.
