EARLY BIRD
Emilia Flores was not a morning person.
You'd think an FBI Agent would have a bit more discipline, but she hated waking up any earlier than she had to. She was a master at the art of procrastinating.
This morning, she was awake at 6:30. Emilia silently crept down the hallway to her kitchen. Despite growing up with a large family in a small house, she still wasn't used to having other people in her home. She didn't even bring friends over. Still, there was a kid she'd never met before sleeping in her guest bedroom.
She took a moment to contemplate why she let this stranger into her home, and then remembered the file Agent Anson had handed her the previous day. Samantha hadn't said anything, just looked at her. Her eyes were filled with guilt.
Emilia didn't even read the full file before agreeing to let Lucie stay with her.
She made herself a cup of coffee, adding much more sugar than necessary. Emilia grabbed the blue and white polka dot mug and walked into the living room. The room was dimly lit by the rising sun. Emilia wasn't used to seeing the myriad of pinks and oranges light up the sky. It was always dimmed by street lights or rush hour traffic or whatever case was on her mind. She was an agent first, and Emilia Flores second.
She supposed her home was almost a safe house now. Something about that fact made her feel very unsafe, but she sipped at her now lukewarm coffee and cringed at the bitterness of it.
After a while in law enforcement, or a while of being a woman, you start to analyse every room you enter. You plan exit strategies and calculate how quickly you could escape. Emilia stared at her own front door and did just that. While the chances of a Canadian cult hunting down a twelve-year-old girl seemed unlikely, Tamara Lincoln and Jason Anson probably thought similarly, and look where that got them.
Emilia had been to Jason's grave. He was buried in the cemetery of the same church the Ansons slept in, on their first night in Felicity Valley. Tamara's funeral was paid for by Roxie Blackwood. She was buried in Mary's Field, Virginia. Emilia hadn't seen her grave but remembered reading the file a few years earlier.
So, Emilia was sitting in a house that no longer felt like hers, with a young girl that might've made herself the enemy of a very dangerous cult sleeping in the other room.
While she had no idea what she would do with a kid she'd promised to protect, she knew one thing.
Emilia Flores was not about to let Lucie David become just another name on a headstone.
