The night I went to patrol after I met Bella was incredibly motivating. I was up and about everywhere, looking throughout the metropolis for people to help and protect. Except, despite my searches, and listening in, the night was calm. Pretty dead, to be honest. But I had this hunch. And I didn't like it.
When I was 'checking in' with the cops, I found out two things.
1. It was clearly not an accident. Good to see we're on the same page.
2. There's no evidence showing who did it. And I can't come in for my testimony without a heavy risk of giving away my identity, which I very much like keeping to myself.
So, while going on patrol, I decided to keep a special eye out on our special new friend. The levels of explosives he/she was carrying around could not be safe for anyone. Where did they even get those?
I may need to look into that once I got some more information. Or if they got caught. Whichever came first, at this point.
I was just about to do another round when I found myself flying to an old automobile factory. It was clearly abandoned at this point, as was the neighborhood around it. A perfectly stereotypical place for a cartel or villain to make headquarters out of. I, honestly, was kind of surprised this place wasn't checked out first for any kind of evidence. Occam's razor, right?
Oh, who am I kidding. If life was that simple, many, and I mean many of my problems would've been solved by now.
Yeah, as one may be able to predict, mere minutes after I perched on a roof nearby, the factory blew up. I saw the figure in the moonlight this time, so that's something new. Could definitely tell it was a woman. Either that or an extremely curvy and petite man. Either way, the pyromaniac relied on stealth and speed in a fight. Which is how, despite my best efforts, they got away again. It's only happened twice and I'm already getting sick and tired of this dance.
Hey, in my defense, fires spread quickly around here. And it takes a while for any sort of department to get on a scene. Just because it was desolate in that neighborhood didn't mean there wasn't a family living a few blocks over. It was my job to protect these families, so I followed my priorities.
One of the few things I take pride in is learning from my mistakes. It was how I was taught growing up, and I obviously still follow. I was far more efficient at putting out this fire by simply bubbling the area and vacuuming out the oxygen from around the area. Because of my efficiency, I was rewarded with the residue of a grenade. It clearly wasn't a professional or military grade by any means; and yet, it behaved like one.
Curiouser and curiouser. How many test runs did they have to do to get it down? If this wasn't the headquarters, then where is it? Are these attacks coordinated, or completely random?
Questions began racing through my mind as I tried to survey the internal damage. From one foot in the building, I could smell something. Something burning. Something like a cigarette, or a joint in use; strong and pungent and ready to seep through your clothes at any time. Taking a deep breath, I started making my way down to the base.
Where cartons of drugs were still burning, and people littered with burns had fallen unconscious, because of the heavy stench.
I was about ready to jump in and help them when I took one look at an untouched crate and saw the logo. Esposito.
Yeah, remember when I said this would make a nice place for a drug cartel?
I pursed my lips in thought for a moment, before cracking open (read: breaking) all of the base windows. The smoke and smell would alert the police, and the shippers get to go to jail instead of dying. Whoo. Fun times for everybody.
Getting a solid breath of fresh air, I decided to end my rounds early tonight. Lord knows how much stuff I inhaled, and how bad I smell at this point. Clearly not fit to finish it off. Leave the evidence for the police, I need to get home and start the laundry. Then probably sleep off the effects and hope I haven't been damaged long term.
And so, after changing out of my uniform at a public but isolated restroom, that's precisely what I did. This may just be me getting antsy, but I really need to catch this guy as soon as possible. I really don't wanna have to deal with a big bad putting people's lives at stake during the school year.
