iThink I'm Mad

Ever since Freddie's murder mystery party, and Pearl's confession Carly was in conflicting emotions as to whether she actually did have feelings for Freddie or not. 3 days had passed and Carly had barely moved from her sofa, and Harper was getting concerned.

Harper: Okay, girl, we seriously need to talk. It's been days now, and you've barely said a word. Ignoring calls, it's like you're ghosting everyone. Especially Freddie.

Carly: You ever feel like that? Like that you might actually have feelings for your best friend that you've known since you were kids?

Harper joined her on the sofa and gently rubbed her shoulder.

Harper: I can't say I have, really.

She then got Carly sitting up properly and continued speaking to her.

Harper: Listen, maybe you should talk to Freddie. Tell him what's going on, and clear the air between you two. Even if he doesn't have those same feelings for you anymore, there's no harm in at least talking to him.

Carly let out an emotionless laugh.

Carly: Hmmm... Freddie not having feelings for me? That makes a change...

Just then, Millicent barged in and confronted the two adult women.

Millicent: You need to get your act together and talk with my dad.

Carly then stood up in shock.

Carly: Is he okay?

Millicent: Honestly, I've never seen him like this. Not even when he got divorced.

Harper: Is he moping around his apartment?

Millicent: More than moping. He's not talking to anyone, he's ignoring messages and Grandma's given up trying to do something.

Carly was just standing there, mouth agape. All of this was happening because of Pearl's revelation, and at that moment, she knew she had to talk to him.

Carly: Okay, I'm gonna go talk to him. Millicent, you stay here.

Millicent: What? Why? Don't get me wrong, it's been fun watching both him and you get emotionally damaged, but I wanna know how you and him plan to get out of this one!

Harper then got Millicent a drink, and guided her to the breakfast bar.

Harper: Probably best you stay here. This looks to be an... adult situation.

Millicent: Adult?

Harper: Yeah, as in properly dating. You'll understand when you find someone you like.

Millicent sighed and drunk her lemonade.

Millicent: Ugh, fine. But the next personal conversation I am definitely being a part of.

The teenager sighed and accepted defeat as Carly messaged Freddie, asking him if they could talk, to which almost immediately, he replied.

I'm on the rooftop.

Carly then grabbed her phone and keys, as she made herself look as presentable as possible, not that Freddie would mind. She then took the elevator, all the way to the top, and took a deep breath before going outside and seeing him in his deckchair, with his laptop and a drink.

Carly: ...Freddie?

He turned around nervously and saw Carly, standing there, almost trembling in nervousness. He pulled out another chair and offered her a drink as she sat down.

Carly: What are you doing up here?

Freddie: I... er, just needed some time to myself, and this is the only place I knew that Millicent and my mum wouldn't find me. I came up here just after Millicent left and Mum was asleep, so I took my chance.

Carly sipped away at her drink, looking up at the sky and just watched the world go by.

Carly: Look, about what Pearl said...

Freddie: About you having feelings for me?

Carly: Yeah...

Freddie: I'm guessing it's true, right?

Carly just sighed and nodded.

Freddie: I did kinda suspect it, to be honest. The hint of jealousy of me and Brooke on the girl's trip, that look you gave me at Webicon, and the whole fake relationship thing when me and Pearl were caught on camera...

Carly: Guess I'm not exactly subtle when it comes to that.

Freddie: Yeah, you could hide it a little better!

The two shared a small laugh as they drunk their drinks, and continued their heart to heart.

Freddie: Look, Carls, we've been best friends for years now. And if in the event we were to ever be in a relationship together, I just feel like you're too good a friend to lose from my life should something go wrong and we break up.

Carly wanted to protest but deep down, she knew that he made a good point. He knew he couldn't afford to lose her from his life, and vice versa - she never wanted to lose Freddie from her life, regardless if they were a couple or not.

Carly: Yeah, I see what you mean.

Freddie: Besides, I'm still with Pearl... I think. She messaged me earlier, saying she wanted some space from me and when she's ready, she wants to talk. To both of us.

Carly: Does she really want me there though?

Freddie: If she didn't say it, she wouldn't want it.

Carly: Fair dos. Kinda puts things in perspective though - I mean, remember when we were teens? That near obsessive crush you had on me?

Freddie laughed.

Freddie: Wow, that seems such a long time ago. My, how the tables have turned. Now you seem to have a crush on me!

Carly: Yeah, now I know how you felt all those years ago when I kept turning you down.

Freddie: Don't put yourself down like that. Sooner or later, you'll find someone. How about online dating?

Carly: You mean like Tinder?

Freddie: Exactly. Think about it - you've tried nearly everything to try and get a decent boyfriend. Except this. Set yourself a profile up and see what, or rather, WHO, comes up.

Carly had a look of apprehension on her face, as this was something she had never tried before.

Freddie: And when you get a match, get yourself talking to the guy. If you REALLY like him, then after you've been talking for a while, get your best outfit on and go on a date.

Carly just looked down in her lap, a hint of nervousness on her face as she looked at her phone screen and her background, a picture of her, Freddie, Spencer, Harper and Millicent, and raised a small smile as tears began filling her eyes.

Carly: Maybe you're right. But at the same time, I feel like I should wait a bit. I mean, until I feel like there aren't any feelings towards you anymore.

Freddie just gently rubbed her shoulder and pulled her in for a hug as she began letting a few tears run down her cheek at the last words she said.

Freddie: It'll be fine, I'll help whenever I can, and the same goes for Spencer and Harper.

Carly: Thanks, Freddie. You're a really good friend. Part of me wishes it was something more, but now I know it's probably not gonna happen.

She finished up her drink and headed back towards the fire escape door.

Freddie: Carly?

She turned around just as she was about to close the door.

Carly: Yeah?

Freddie: Thanks for being there for me. I needed this talk.

Carly: No probs, I mean, what are friends for?

They smiled at each other for one last time before Carly shut the door, leaving Freddie on the rooftop as he watched the sunset began to fall.

As Carly made it back to the apartment, she completely blanked Harper and Millicent, and went straight to her bedroom and locked the door. She laid face down on the bed and began crying her eyes out for a solid half an hour before straightening herself out, wiping away any remaining tears and going back to the living room, where Millicent had gone home and Harper was left reading a fashion magazine on the sofa.

Harper: Well, look who decided to come back to civilisation! How you doing?

Carly: Been better, to be honest. Never the less, I do feel better about myself now me and Freddie have spoken about the situation and cleared the air.

Harper: Well, I'm glad. I

Carly: What happened with Millicent, by the way?

Harper: She got bored with me after about 20 minutes so she left and decided to try and annoy Spencer instead.

Carly: God help him...

Harper then put down her magazine and got closer to Carly.

Harper: So, how did the talk with Freddie go? Like, really?

Carly: As good as can be expected without the happy ending really. I told him how I feel, he said he didn't want to risk our friendship and that was it really. And now here I am.

Harper: You think you might have maybe jumped the gun a bit? I mean, he liked you for years.

Carly: Maybe - I mean, it has only been a few months I've liked him, basically ever since he and Pearl kissed at his launch party, when me and him were in that fake relationship thing.

Harper: And let me guess - that was around the time when you started to have some real feelings for him?

She just nodded and Harper side hugged her.

Carly: And also, to try and help things along a bit, Freddie suggested I try online dating.

Harper: I agree! You've been single for way too long now, you need to get back out there!

Carly thought about it for a split second before giving her answer.

Carly: Okay, let's do it.

Meanwhile, Freddie was now in Spencer's apartment with Millicent, and they were chatting about the whole Carly situation.

Freddie: What have I done?

Spencer: Depends. Do you think it was right or wrong?

Freddie: I can't help but feel like I did both. Right because I already have a girlfriend, and wrong because this is the first time Carly has ever liked me in that way.

Millicent: I can see why Harper warned me this would be an adult conversation. This stuff is difficult to deal with.

Spencer: Well, who knows, you might actually learn a thing or two when you take up dating!

Millicent shrugged her shoulders and listened to her dad.

Freddie: It's just that all my life, I've been unlucky with girls. That crush on Carly, that short relationship with Sam, that kiss before Carly left for Italy, the marriages, the divorces, and now this.

Spencer: Well did you ever stop and think that maybe Carly was the one for you after all?

Freddie: Only for a bit, when she came back from Italy, and again when we were in that whole fake relationship thing. But marriages and Pearl kinda changed that.

Spencer: And how do you feel about Pearl?

Freddie: Still the same as I did before - I still love her and want to see how and where things go. With Carly, I told her to try online dating, and see if that was worth a shot.

Spencer: Guess that might work. I mean, I'm trying that at the moment and I have a date tomorrow night with this amazing blonde.

Millicent: And not Harper?

Spencer: What makes you say that?

Millicent: Oh come on, we all know you're just dating to try and take your mind off Harper - you really like her?

Spencer: Well, I'm not saying no, but I'm not saying yes either.

Freddie: So that's a yes.

Spencer just sighed as he knew he couldn't deny it anymore.

Spencer: Fine - I do like her. But I just can't tell if she likes me back. So until I find out, I'm going on a few dates.

Freddie: And the more she sees you and your date together, you think she'll get jealous?

Spencer: Not jealous, more attracted, and eventually, after a while, she'll want to go on a date with me.

Millicent: Oh come on! I'm only 12 and even I know this is stupid! If you like Harper so much, just go and tell her!

Freddie: She does have a point. I mean, look at me and Pearl, we sorta just dove right in at the Kevin launch party, and look where we are now.

Millicent: You mean not talking to you because of what she suspects between you and Carly?

There was a brief pause between all three of them before Freddie answered.

Freddie: Fair point.

Just then, Carly and Harper entered, with the latter wearing a big smile on her face.

Harper: I can't believe you're actually gonna do it!

Spencer: Do what?

Carly took a deep breath as everyone looked at her expectantly.

Carly: I'm gonna try online dating... and I need your help.
